EDITOR’S PREVIEW Volume 40 • Number 2 FEBRUARY 2021 Landan Kuhlmann Lead Reporter

ActionCOACH Southwest Houston puts businesses in position to succeed I don’t personally own a business. But what I do know is that while many of us might feel we are pretty good at our jobs, there are always things we don’t know. Someone else out there usually has more experience than we do; and there is always a new level to which we can go – a new frontier which we have yet to conquer. Right there, in that margin, is where Kevan Hanson and ActionCOACH Southwest Houston enter the conversation. Since last October, Hanson and his team at ActionCOACH Southwest Houston have been the latest franchisee in a corporation that has more than 150 offices around the United States, right here in Fort Bend County’s backyard at 2245 Texas Dr. Suite 300 in Sugar Land Town Square. With decades of experience in startup business and oilfield exploration, Hanson has said he wants to help foster a new generation of businesses through ActionCOACH’s business planning, coaching and execution techniques

and strategies as a way to give back to the community’s businesses and business owners. Especially now, with no indication of when the COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on businesses will subside, Hanson knows that there are many struggling businesses out there that need some help getting back on track. So that’s the service he strives to provide – even if a prospective client might wind up competing with ActionCOACH down the road. In his own words, Hanson and ActionCOACH don’t want to see businesses simply survive the pandemic – the goal is to have them thriving during COVID-19 and for years to come. So whether you’re a small business owner looking for some start-up advice on running your company or staying power, or a corporation looking for a restart, go ahead and give ActionCOACH Southwest Houston a call today. Hanson and his team are ready and waiting for your call.

Family calling staying strong at Sugar Land Health Center By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Most chiropractors, Sophie Brazzell said, are associated with just the back and spine. But thanks to a unique focus at Sugar Land Health Center and its standing as the original chiropractor in the city, the office is still going strong nearly 40 years after moving into the strip center at 3425 Hwy. 6 in Sugar Land and adapting as it goes. “They treat more than just the neck and back,” said Brazzell, who works at Sugar Land Health Center as an administrator and clinical assistant to Dr. Steve Harris and her husband, Dr. Zack Brazzell. “There’s a lot of different areas we’re able to address with everything that’s available.” Harris has more than 40 years of chiropractic experience, moving his practice to Sugar Land in 1982. He graduated from Logan Chiropractic College in Chesterfield, Missouri, in 1976 and has been practicing continuously since that time. And in that time, Sophie Brazzell said

Dr. Steve Harris and Dr. Zack Brazzell. (Contributed photo) Harris’ dedication to his craft has never wavered – whether it’s treating common tissue problems or creating his own treatment options for headaches and head pain by consolidating the information he has learned in decades of practice.

“He hasn’t stopped learning, and he learns from his patients. He’s seen a lot of things (in 45 years),” Brazzell said. “It’s only given him a deeper knowledge of insight into the needs of others and the common injuries people have that they aren’t conscious of – but he can see the patterns.” Beyond the medical aspect, Brazzell said an important part of the practice – and one of the reasons people have kept returning – is the importance they try to place on community as opposed to just poking and prodding. Both Harris and Zack Brazzell are involved in the community beyond the practice, Sophie said, serving in community rotary clubs and other organizations. Meant to serve Even more than before during COVID-19, Sophie said doctors must clean and sanitize equipment between patients and wear masks around patients, and also socially distance patients when multiple people are inside. Q: A:

ASK THE EXPERT ESTATE PLANNING. IS IT FOR EVERYONE?

The answer is yes! Make sure your legacy fits your individual situation, no matter your age or Connolly, wealth. Estate planning doesn’t begin Margie Attorney and end with a last will and testament. It can include living trusts, developing a plan to mitigate or avoid estate taxes, and working to ensure that your life’s savings and assets are safe from your beneficiaries’ creditors after your death. Medical directives and powers of attorney are also part of your estate plan. If you are injured in an accident, who will step in to take care of your personal business while you recover? It’s not the most pleasant topic to talk about. But it’s necessary for the benefit of you and your loved ones.

Margie Connolly, Attorney

Q: A:

ASK THE EXPERT Doesn’t Hearing Loss Only Occur in the Elderly?

No, unfortunately hearing loss is more prevalent in the general population than people think. There are many causes of hearing loss. There are congenital hearing losses, hearing loss present at birth, and late onset hearing loss which occurs later in life. Congenital hearing losses can Terry Snook be due to genetic syndromes, birth defects, and prenatal AuD, FAAA infections; where the mother passes the infection to the baby in the womb. There are more than 400 known genetic syndromes related to hearing loss. Prenatal infections such as toxoplasmosis, rubella, and herpes can contribute to hearing loss as well. Birth defects such as structural abnormalities in the ear can occur in babies born prematurely. Late onset hearing loss can be related to medical conditions, injury, and medications. Head injuries, ear infections, Meniere’s disease, vascular diseases, and immune diseases can increase the likelihood of developing a hearing loss. Other infections such as meningitis, mumps, scarlet fever, and measles can affect hearing. Some medications which can be ototoxic are aminoglycosides, loop diuretics, antineoplastics, salicylates, and quinine. The risk and use of these medications should be discussed with your prescribing physician. The tendency to develop hearing loss as we age is related to a family history of hearing loss and repeated exposure to loud sounds or noises. Smoking also has been found to increase the risk of developing a hearing loss. If you think you or someone you love may be experiencing difficulty hearing, please contact us or your hearing healthcare provider to have a baseline hearing test performed as soon as possible.

AKI Steak and Sushi still serving up food, community camaraderie By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com The atmosphere at AKI Steak and Sushi in Sugar Land is a laid-back one that lends itself to a conversation, whether it be between customers themselves or a dialogue between customers and the servers or managers of the family-owned restaurant at 510 Hwy. 6, Suite 180 in Sugar Land. Such a relationship is one that has often been missing during the COVID-19 pandemic, but it hasn’t dimmed the owners’ passion for serving the community through food and conversation. “We have a lot of those who come here regularly -- we can see their face every week or every other day,” said Yana Xiao, one of the restaurant’s managers. A staple of what the restaurant tries to do, Xiao said, is form relationships with

ASK THE EXPERT Can a repair facility save me from paying my deductible?

An honest repair shop will always say “no” to saving deductibles. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance carrier. It basically says that if you have a Chuck Charlton collision loss, you are responsible for the first portion of repairs (your deductible) and the insurance company will pay the rest. If the final repair cost is less, you’re still responsible for the predetermined deductible amount. Any reduction should correctly go back to the insurance company. There are legitimate ways to reduce your cost. An appearance allowance (credit towards your deductible usually for minor cosmetic repairs not completed) is one way but must be consulted with your insurance company. Be wary of the repair shop that offers to save you your deductible. Are they completing all repairs or is your safety being jeopardized with an inadequate repair?

HELPING BUSINESS SURVIVE & THRIVE COVER STORY

LANDAN KUHLMANN

BY

Even before the COVID-19 pandemic took hold of the Houston region a year ago, there was never a shortage of businesses struggling for various reasons. Since the pandemic began, that struggle has been magnified tenfold. But Kevan Hanson and his team at ActionCOACH Southwest Houston are here to help businesses not only survive the pandemic, but to thrive and accomplish their dreams for years to come through its business coaching model. Whether it’s a small business looking for startup help, or medium and large-sized companies looking for a reset or restart, Hanson believes that he’s got the answers business owners are looking for. “Every business is unique both in itself and in how the pandemic is affecting them,” he said. “We have to look at each one individually and put strategies in place that ensure they

8

Hanson survive and then thrive in the long haul.” Founded in 1993 by Brad Sugars, ActionCOACH is currently represented in 81 countries around the world. The company now has more than 1,000 offices and tens of thousands of clients worldwide. Hanson, the ActionCOACH Southwest Houston owner, and Chief Coach, is a longtime business executive

with nearly 40 years of oil exploration business startup and growth experience in more than 40 countries. Throughout his career, Hanson said he specialized in new country startups and building successful businesses from scratch, which he did in nine different countries. He said he takes pride in fostering the next generation of leaders by helping them to build a diverse and talented team that will help take their business to the next level. Whether it’s building a team, figuring out sustainability or anything in between, Hanson and his team are there to help. “Any company that would like to achieve greater success, we deploy our globally-proven strategies to accelerate their growth through coaching, planning and education,” he said. Following a transition from the oil industry in 2019, Hanson said he wanted to find a way to utilize his accumulated business knowledge in a way that could help others. A former COO for an oil services company, he became the franchisee for ActionCOACH Southwest Houston and opened the office last October at 2245 Texas Dr., Suite 300 in Sugar Land Town Square. “Since I’ve been traveling the world in

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, ActionCOACH would hold seminars like this one for business owners. (Contributed photo) the oil industry, I decided that I’d like to open my own business and give back to the community that has nourished me, specifically Southwest Houston and Fort Bend County,” he said. “I identified ActionCOACH as a way for me to give back.” At ActionCOACH Southwest Houston, Hanson and his team stay true to the franchise’s core tentpoles – Business Coaching, Business Planning and Education. The company has developed the world’s most comprehensive framework of business coaching strategies, tactics, tools & solutions to deliver an industryexclusive 17-week guarantee and 700& Return on Investment that provides the capability to coach businesses in all industries and in all stages of the business life cycle from startup through to creating a strong, wealth-creating exit. Many additional strategies and tactics have been developed since last March to guide businesses to shift course during the pandemic. The company is also currently giving a gift to the business community of an opportunity to update or create a customized 3-Year Strategic Business Plan for their business that provides a clear pathway to address the current challenges in their business, where their business can get to in the next 3-5 years and how to get there with greater certainty of success. Hanson stated this is part of our abundant approach to giving back to the business community. “Some of (these businesses) are very good at what they do and could tremendously benefit from proven strategies to better run the business side of it or build a team around them that gets it done how it needs to be

done,” Hanson said. “That’s where we come in.” Once a client comes to them, Hanson said he and his team are there for the long haul. Even after the initial session to diagnose and remedy issues, ActionCOACH remains engaged. For as long as the business would like, ActionCOACH Southwest Houston offers what they call “one-to-one” coaching, a weekly session where Hanson and his team lay out their plan for the long haul and how to execute on that plan with a clear pathway to success. Just as any athlete or professional must be committed to their craft, Hanson said business owners also have to be committed to their own personal and professional development if they’re going to successfully grow their business. And that’s where ActionCOACH comes into play, remaining engaged as long as needed through the various phases of the business life cycle all the way through to a wealth-creating exit. “If I allow people to be just okay or to be mediocre – then what I am saying is I want a company that is just okay,” reads a quote from Sugars on ActionCOACH Southwest’s website. “Anyone who knows me will tell you that is not what I am about.” What’s more, Hanson and his team are as invested in a business’s success as they are. If a business owner’s coaching services do not pay for themselves within 17 weeks, ActionCOACH Southwest Houston will coach for free until they do. Typically, that goal is achieved within 4-8 weeks, and on average the company’s clients gain a 700 percent return on investment (ROI)

The Fort Bend Business Journal H February 2021

by year two of their five-year business plan, according to Hanson. “What we’d like to do initially is figure out what their goals and dreams are for their business – if they know where they want to go, it’s much easier for them to get there,” Hanson said. “We put in strategies from the get-go in order to make that dream a reality for them.” Above all, Hanson just wants to help. Beyond the success of his own businesses, he is committed to helping those businesses in Southwest Houston – even those that in theory would be competing with his own – using ActionCOACH’s framework of more than 3,500 business tools, solutions, strategies and resources. “If a business owner is having problems in areas of time, team or money, we can help them,” he said.

To schedule your Business Strategy Session to update or create your 3-Year Strategic Plan with Hanson and his team at ActionCOACH Southwest Houston or to see more about what they can offer, give them a call at 281-609-8488. Community members can also stop by the office in person at Sugar Land Town Square or visit the company’s website at swhouston.actioncoach.com

This is fulfilling work, and we’re happy to be in this field,” she said. “When news first came out, we closed and gathered to see what it meant for us and how we could evolve and adapt with it.” That drive, she said, comes from a foundation of family. Harris ran the practice with his wife, Sophie’s mother, for many years. Since 2019, he has worked alongside Zack in attempts to serve the Sugar Land community the best way they know how. “We’re all passionate about this and enjoy doing it together,” Sophie said. – which is usually what she said chiropractors are associated with. Along with standard chiropractic treatments, Sugar Land Health Center can also treat joint pain and offer a weight-loss program, as well as concentrated pressure wave therapy Sophie compared to an accelerated version of acupuncture. “Chiropractic is all about the holistic approach. We look at the body from the feet to the head to find the root causes and address them,” Zack Brazzell says on the center’s website. The center also treats both acute and chronic joint pain and offers laser therapy, along with other treatments that can be done both pre- and post-surgery. “We like to really get to know our patients and understand what their goals are. … We want people to find long-term relief so they can keep on doing what they

love,” Sophie said. “Whatever direction you go, we want you to do what you love and know that we’re available.” Ultimately, she said, it’s about giving someone the ability to be the best version

of themselves without reservation through understanding their patients’ goals. “Neither one of them stops learning – this is what they love. It isn’t a job,” she said. “It’s a calling for our family.”

of return customers both before and during the pandemic. “We give them the food they want, and try to memorize it. We want to know what your habit is and what you like, so you can come in here and it feels like home,” she said. “We’re always happy to see you coming back.” Xiao said that whether it’s an adventurous choice like the Maki A (which includes your choice of soup and up to three types of sushi rolls), the Tiger Eye Roll – smoked salmon, cream cheese, masago and jalapeno wrapped in soy paper – the Spider Roll – soft shell crab, masago, avocado, kaiware and cucumber topped with eel sauce – or the classic Avocado Roll, AKI has not changed its formula since 2013. If the sushi isn’t your cup of tea, there are also raw seafood dishes available such as Sashimi B or Chirashi. Whenever a new chef comes in, Xiao said they are trained on the art of how to mix or scale the rice, the fish, the sauce, and everything in between. After all, there’s no reason to deviate from what has made AKI a fixture in Sugar Land and Fort Bend County.

“We want to do it the same way, so people can always get it,” she said. “This is a neighborhood restaurant – lots of people and families come here, and they want to have the same thing, so we do.” As state and federal orders have come down over the last year in attempts to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 since last March, Xiao said the restaurant has been largely making its way on to-go and pickup orders as restrictions on restaurant capacities fluctuate. Currently, AKI offers Dine-in services as well as online orders (for pick-up or delivery), and also home delivery via DoorDash and UberEats. When inside the restaurant, all servers, cooks and other employees wear masks and gloves, Xiao said, while all touchable surfaces are regularly cleaned and sanitized. But whatever they need to do to keep the community safe while keeping on serving them good food, it’s a small price to pay according to Xiao. “We’re always happy to see you coming back,” she said. So even though foot traffic may be slow, Xiao wanted the community to know that they are always welcome at AKI – rain or shine, at home or in the restaurant. They just want to see the smiling faces and serve

them fresh food that they love. “The pandemic has changed a lot of things…We welcome them to dine in or pick up,” she said. “Whatever they feel will keep them the safest, do it – but we’re still missing them.”

athy Evert teaches at a local Christian academy. In March, she went from the classroom to the “Zoomroom,” teaching her students over the internet from her computer at home. One day during screen time, she reached for a book from the bookshelf at her right side and realized she couldn’t lift the book off the shelf. She had injured her rotator cuff, and the pain and limited range of motion made it difficult to perform such an easy task. In typical, heroic teacher fashion, Cathy finished the school day and made plans to see her favorite chiropractor, Dr. Steve Harris, as soon as she could. Through a recommendation from her pastor, Cathy first visited Dr. Harris for her back pain in 2012. She had such success back then that she immediately called Sugar Land Health Center to see about her shoulder pain. During her latest round of treatments, Cathy had the pleasure of meeting and working with Dr. Zack Brazzell. Sugar Land Health Center provides chiropractic treatment for people of all ages. Dr. Steve Harris opened his center in 1982, and last April he welcomed his son-in-law, Dr. Zack Brazzell, to the practice. Together, they offer a safe and holistic approach with a wide variety of chiropractic care modalities and associated therapies to help people with chronic pain and/or help improve their overall Dr. Steve Harris and the newest member of SLHC, Dr. Zack Brazzell

musculoskeletal function and health. “Dr. Brazzell is incredibly conscientious and very serious about treating you, and that you get better through your treatment. He explained Pressure Wave Therapy and recommended it as part of my treatment. He tested my range of motion before we started; I was in pain and couldn’t raise my arm above my shoulder. Today, I am pain free and I have full range of motion,” says Cathy. “Now I have two favorite chiropractors. In my opinion, Dr. Steve Harris and Dr. Zack Brazzell are the world’s best chiropractors!”
