EDITOR’S PREVIEW Volume 41• Number 3 MARCH 2022 Landan Kuhlmann Lead Reporter
Local business helping with Ukraine an example of our best For many of us, the last few weeks have been filled with images of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces whether it be on our televisions, in news publications like this one or as we scroll our social media feeds. Also for many of us, we’re struck with a sense of uselessness, wondering what we can do from thousands of miles away to help a country going through the type of strife that nobody deserves. But in times like this, I feel like it’s not so much about the sheer volume of any type of giving. It’s about the spirit that lives within the action. And I was inspired by what I saw while out and about covering an event right here in Fort Bend County earlier this month. On March 2, dozens of citizens made their way out to Sugar Land Town Square for a vigil that was organized in support of Ukraine, complete with residents of Ukranian descent proudly displaying the county’s flag. But more than that was that I noticed something that speaks to the heart of who and what Fort Bend County is. Big Frog is a Sugar Land store specializing in creating custom T-shirts and embroidery for hoodies, hats, polos and jackets. And on March 2, flyers passed around
showed that for the foreseeable future, 50 percent of proceeds from each purchase of its “I Stand With Ukraine” shirts would go to an organization dedicated to Ukrainian relief efforts. here was also a QR code that people could scan. And while I am not surprised at the show of support and the unity the Fort Bend County community showed -- having covered the area and made frequent trips to the county all my life, I have seen it firsthand on multiple occasions -- I still found myself in a bit in awe. That is not least of all because of what Big Frog is doing. There aren’t a ton of businesses who would sacrifice a chunk of their profits for people on the other side of the world - but it’s an example of what Fort Bend County is. We’re a melting pot of cultures, who support each other when we’re in need. And the show of gratitude from those of Ukranian descent in attendance at the March 2 event spoke volumes. Now, not everyone has the means to do what Big Frog is doing, that’s true. But the help doesn’t have to be a grand gesture to be meaningful. So let’s follow Big Frog’s lead, and do what we can - you never know the impact your actions can have.

Filli Café will offer food such as Paratha and Kathi rolls along with traditional American staples such as burgers and hot dogs, and dessert options such as Zafran Milk Cake, according to its website. Red Circle Ice Cream opens doors in Sugar Land By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com
In September 2021, the Fort Bend Business Journal reported that a Houstonbased specialty ice cream and dessert spot was coming to Fort Bend County. That spot opened last month. Red Circle Ice Cream held its grand opening event Feb. 19 at 3595 State Highway 6 in Sugar Land, according to a Facebook post from the store. It is Red Circle’s first Fort Bend County store and its third location in the region, joining its flagship store in Houston and another one in Pearland. According to its website, Red Circle offers more than 100 rotating flavors of handcrafted ice cream on its menu for just about any palate, such as Donkey Kong, Cha-Cha Cherry Sorbet and Krack’N Coconut. They will also have more than a dozen different types of handcrafted glazed and frosty churros, as well as the
“King Churro,” which is a glazed churro with Cap’n Crunch or graham crackers.

ASK THE EXPERT
What to do About Hives
Hives are the skin’s reaction to certain things that may cause red or white itchy patches in the skin. Chronic hives, or uticaria, occurs when the itchy patches last more than six weeks or come back every few months or years. Symptoms of this condition can include wheals on the face, arms, legs, and trunk, itching, swelling, and welts that vary in size. Common triggers may include exposure to insects, extreme changes in the temperature, sunlight, or alcohol. Cortisone cream can help relieve the inflammation and itching associated with mild forms of hives. Second-generation antihistamines such as loratadine (Claritin), fexafenadine (Allegra), and cetirizine (Zyrtec) help reduce itching and do not cause as much sleepiness compared to the older antihistamines. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) such as ibuprofen (Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) may be taken to help reduce inflammation and pain. Omalizumab (Xolair) is approved in teenagers and adults with urticaria who do not find relief with antihistamines.

Q: A:
ASK THE EXPERT Is there really a difference between Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs), Over the Counter Hearing Aids (OTCs), and Hearing Aids fit by an Audiologist?
Absolutely, there is a big difference between these tiers of technology. That is why there is a difference in the pricing of these products. I have read articles that Terry Snook state that the PSAPs and OTCs have the AuD, FAAA same kind of processors as hearing aids. PSAPs and OTCs do not have the capability to modify the auditory signal as much as a hearing device. High-end hearing aids have a computer chip that can process up to 500 Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS). Advanced hearing aid circuits can run algorithms to make corrections to improve the clarity of speech. For example, hearing devices can run calculations to weight certain speech cues such as fricative sounds, like the (z), (s), (f) sounds that are faint and difficult to hear. A lot of older technologies use beam forming to help you hear in one direction. This offers some improvement but has limitations. The more advanced high-end hearing aids use different processes to weight and make the speech signal pop up over a noisy or difficult listening environment. All of these features and settings must be programmed and adjusted precisely for each patient’s needs. Although the PSAPs and OTCs will offer some benefit, the overall improvement is very limited. It is very misleading to state that patients will obtain the same results with these low-end products than with hearing aids that are programmed by an Audiologist for the patient’s specific hearing loss and needs.

Q: A:
ASK THE EXPERT What do I need to know about having my vehicle towed after an accident?
Know which tow company you would use in case of an accident before you have an accident! You may contact the collision repair facility you would use in Chuck Charlton advance to obtain name and phone number of a reputable towing company. Keep this information in your glove box with your proof of insurance. If you are involved in an accident during business hours, it is wise to go ahead and have the tow company take your vehicle to the shop of your choice. If your accident is after business hours, make sure you ask the wrecker driver where your vehicle will be towed. You may be in the situation where you will not have the opportunity to choose your tow company. In this case, ALWAYS ask what the charges will be an NEVER sign a tow bill that does not list the total charge. Be Informed?

ASK THE EXPERT Legal Questions Everyone Should Ask (and Answer)
Over the past year or two, you’ve probably spent many sleepless nights worrying about what would happen if you were incapacitated (or worse): • Who will make medical decisions for you? • Who will be responsible for paying your bills? • Who will take care of your dependent children? Margie Connolly, • How can you make sure your elderly parents are taken Attorney care of if they need in-home care or assisted living? Why the recent interest in these questions? Two years of living through the COVID-19 pandemic have left many of us confused and frustrated. However, two things are now crystal clear: 1. Serious, even fatal health issues can occur without warning 2. You need to have a plan ready in case they do More than ever, these days you need to be prepared for the unexpected. Failure to have a plan in place can have serious consequences for you and especially your loved ones. To make sure your wishes are respected, and your plan is followed, you need to have the appropriate legal documents prepared. Depending on your circumstances, these can include: • Will • Trust(s) • Power of attorney • Guardianship • Medical directives (and medical power of attorney) A qualified estate planning attorney can help you prepare the documents you need and keep them updated. This will give you peace of mind and protect you and your loved ones if the worst happens.

Financial advisors can help reduce anxiety
FOCUS The long-running coronavirus pandemic has fueled a lot of anxieties – including financial ones. But some people have had far fewer worries than others. Consider this: Among those investors who work with a financial advisor, 84% said that doing so gave them a greater sense of comfort about their finances during the pandemic, according to a survey from Age Wave and Edward Jones. Of course, many people experience investment-related fears even without a global health crisis, and that’s probably not surprising, given the periodic volatility of the financial markets. But financial guidance can come in handy during relatively normal times, too. A financial professional can help you … … Look past the headlines – Inflation, interest rates, pandemics, elections – there’s always something in the news that could affect the investment world in the short term. But by helping you construct a portfolio that’s built for the long term and reflects your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, a financial advisor can enable you to look past the headlines. … Avoid emotional decisions – Many people let their emotions drive their investment choices. When the market goes through a downturn and the value of their investments drops, they sell to “cut losses,” even though these same investments may still have good business
6
fundamentals and promising futures. Conversely, when the market is on an uptick, some poeple chase after “hot” investments, even when they become overpriced and may have very little room to grow. But a financial advisor can help keep you from making these fear- and greed-based actions by only recommending moves that make sense for your situation. … Work toward multiple goals – At various times in your life, you may have simultaneous financial goals. For example, you could be investing for a retirement that’s decades away, while also trying to save for a child’s college education. A financial professional can suggest ways you can keep working toward both objectives, in terms of how much money you can afford to invest and what types of savings and investment vehicles you should consider. … Prepare for the unexpected – Most of us did not need a pandemic to remind us that unexpected events
can happen in our lives – and some of these events can have serious financial impacts on us and our loved ones. Do you have adequate life insurance? How about disability insurance? And if you ever needed some type of long-term care, such as an extended stay in a nursing home, how would you pay for it? A financial advisor can evaluate your protection needs and recommend appropriate solutions that fit within your overall financial strategy. … Adapt to changing circumstances – Over time, many things may change in your life – your job, your family situation, your retirement plans, and so on. A financial professional can help you adjust your financial strategy in response to these changes. Achieving your financial goals may present challenges, but it doesn’t have to cause you years of worry and distress – as long as you get the help you need.

NOW OFFERING COMPREHENSIVE SENIOR HEALTH CARE IN FORT BEND COVER STORY BY
LANDAN KUHLMANN
There’s a new senior care center in Stafford – and seniors and their families have been quickly discovering that the center offers not only a comprehensive array of health and wellness services and resources, but also a sense of community. From the care and activities available to the hand-picked team of health and wellness professionals, to the design of the facility itself, administrators say the new Legacy Stafford Fountains Senior Care Center is dedicated to giving senior patients in Stafford and greater Fort Bend County the best quality of care possible on all fronts. “Legacy’s mission is to identify and close health care gaps and improve access to health care for all,” said Chinelo Nweke, the clinic’s director of senior care. Nweke said that when Legacy
realized many residents in Stafford didn’t have access to comprehensive senior primary care and support services, they knew it was time to step in by opening their second seniorcentered care clinic in the Houston area. As hoped, Legacy’s presence has been welcomed by the Stafford community. Since the clinic’s doors opened on Jan. 24 at 12540 Sugardale Dr., providers have had a steady stream of seniors coming in looking for comprehensive services focused specifically on helping them live their healthiest and fullest lives. “We’re here to fill the need for comprehensive care for seniors, and we’re very unique in that aspect of care,” said Dr. Joanna Ira, who leads the center’s medical team – a team she says is committed to building a network of support for seniors and their families. That network of support, which includes access to Legacy’s eligibility, nutrition, pharmacy and social services experts, as well as connection to local community organizations and support, is especially vital to the senior population more so than anything, according to Nweke. She said older adults sometimes lack the familial or social support needed to address their daily living functions or more complex health challenges. But at Legacy, she said, they’ll find a community that cares not just about their physical health, but about their emotional and mental health as well. “Providing a place where they can receive not only comprehensive services, but also sort of build a community, gives them the opportunity to feel empowered and take their care into their own hands while creating those relationships socially that may be missing,” Nweke said. The clinic serves those 63 years of age and older, offering a comprehensive care model with a host of services on-site for seniors and their families or caregivers, as well as a team of experts to coordinate their care. That team includes doctors, nurse practitioners, nutritionists, pharmacists, behavioral therapists, social service specialists and more, all working together so seniors can live healthier, fuller lives. In addition to compassionate care and community connection, seniors at Legacy Stafford Fountains have access to a full scope of services on-site such as:
• • • • • • • • •
Primary care Medicare annual wellness visits and preventive services Behavioral health Chronic disease management for ailments such as arthritis, diabetes, and heart disease Extended appointments to address all physical, emotional, and mental health needs On-site lab and x-ray services Clinical pharmacy services Senior care social work consultations Monthly activities and educational classes

The new Legacy Stafford Fountains care center provides comprehensive health and wellness services to seniors. (Contributed photo) The receptive response from the community demonstrates the need for comprehensive senior care in Fort Bend County, and such a response, according to Nweke, can only open more doors for Legacy to help as many senior patients as possible. “We always emphasize access to care for everyone, so any opportunity that we have to come and help the communities that need it, we are willing to explore that and do it,” Nweke said. “Seeing how well this center is starting off gives us more opportunities to look and see how else we can expand this to other parts of Fort Bend and Harris Counties.” According to Jessica Ferdinand, VP of Marketing, the community’s warm reception to the new clinic speaks to the passion and dedication of the entire team that worked to make everything as perfect as possible for all seniors in the community. Legacy’s mission, she says, is simple: to drive healthy change in our communities. In other words, to provide accessible health care for everyone, regardless of what the situation might be. “It’s in our DNA,” Ferdinand says. And at the end of the day, they believe in that mission. Legacy’s decades of experience caring for their communities and their network of resources and expertise is evident in every detail of Legacy Stafford Fountains, which is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information on the clinic and to see if it’s the place for them, community members can visit Legacy’s website at legacycommunityhealth.org/seniorcare, or give them a call at 713-814-3655.

New health restaurant coming soon to Sugar Land By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com A new health-focused eatery could make its way to Fort Bend County later this year. Clean Eatz, a restaurant franchise brand known for its mission to provide customers with options conducive to living a healthier lifestyle, is expanding its Houston-area presence with a new location in Sugar Land sometime this year. However, a concrete opening date for the Sugar Land store in the New Territory area at 2705 Town Center Blvd. N. has not been set, and a follow-up email to a company representative was not immediately returned. According to its website, Clean Eatz in Sugar Land will offer health-centered options such as

B.B. Italia Bistro & Bar coming to Sugar Land By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com There will soon be a new dining option for Italian food lovers in one of Sugar Land’s most bustling spots. According to a March 1 news release from Berg Hospitality Group, B.B. Italia Bistro & Bar will soon be opening its new location in Sugar Land Town Square at 16250 City Walk Dr. B.B. Italia spokesperson Amy Verbout said in an email that current plans call for the restaurant to open in late spring. Berg Hospitality Group founder and CEO Benjamin Berg said Sugar Land Town Square was the perfect spot for its new location due to multiple factors. “We’re thrilled to be a part of the transformation of Sugar Land Town Square, which is fast becoming a destination for eclectic dining offerings in the Houston area,” he said. “This bustling, mixed-use development is a great fit for us, offering great walkability,
retail, entertainment, and events that add to the experience and ambiance our guests want before or after a meal.” Once open, the release said the new B.B. Italia Bistro & Bar will bring comfort food dishes like whipped ricotta, chicken parmigiana, house-made pastas including a 20-layer lasagna, and New York-style pizzas to the table. B.B. Italia Bistro & Bar will offer inside dining as well as a patio area as part of its 6,770-square foot space in Sugar Land. “We are so excited to have one of the most exciting and dynamic restaurateurs in Texas coming to Sugar Land Town Square,” said Rebees director of retail programming and operations, which runs Sugar Land Town Square. “… We are proud and honored to be working with the Berg Hospitality Group to bring this wonderful concept to our community.”
