EDITOR’S PREVIEW Volume 41• Number 5 MAY 2022 Landan Kuhlmann Lead Reporter
Steady business growth shows area’s fortitude I continue to find myself in amazement at the sheer growth I continue to see in Fort Bend County. I’ve lived here nearly my whole life, though, so I guess I shouldn’t. So I thought it would be good to take some time in this space to appreciate the continued fortitude of business owners and leaders in this county who have helped play a role in keeping our business economy booming even as we continue to battle the COVID-19 pandemic – because that economy is still going strong, and their efforts have been invaluable. A 2021 study from Smart Asset aimed to identify the places across the U.S. that are receiving the most incoming investments in sectors such as business, real estate, government and the local economy as a whole over the last three years. It considered factors such as business establishment growth, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, and new building permits per 1,000 homes from 2019-21. Smart Asset compared the change in the number of businesses established in each spot throughout a three-year period to determine whether or not people were starting new business ventures in each county.
For 2019-21, Fort Bend had one of the top-10 fastest-growing economies in Texas over the last three years, according to the study, and remains one of the overall fastest-growing counties in the country. Its GDP growth ($1.475 million) and business growth (14.7 percent) were both ninth in the state, while its 56 new building permits per 1,000 homes was fifth on the list, according to Smart Asset. As in every publication, you’ll see stories this month of new businesses still wanting to come here, and that is a testament to the business owners that are the backbone of this county. It’s no secret that it has been a trying two years for businesses in Fort Bend and the Houston area, and this column is by no means attempting to diminish that. But Fort Bend County has always been resilient, and its businesses have been no different. This is still an exciting time to live and work in Fort Bend. So take a read through these pages about more new businesses that are going to help keep our economy rolling along, and stop in and visit them when you can. It’s the least we can do.

FOCUS If you reach retirement with a significant amount of assets, you’ve done a great job of saving and investing. But now comes another challenge – making that money last. You might think that this task, as important as it is, won’t be as hard as accumulating the money in the first place. Yet, a sizable number of people have reached a different conclusion. In fact, 36% of retirees say managing money in retirement is more confusing than saving for retirement, and 56% say they wish they had budgeted for more unexpected expenses in retirement, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. What steps can you take to help you become an effective money manager during your retirement years? Here are a few to consider: • Set your goals. Your money management needs will certainly depend, to some extent, on what your goals are for the coming years. Will you travel extensively? Stay close to home and pursue your hobbies? Or maybe even open a small business? Once you identify your vision for retirement, you can estimate how much it will cost, which will then dictate much of your spending and saving needs. • Stick to a budget. If you’ve followed a budget throughout your working years, there’s no reason to stop now – in fact, budgeting may be even more essential when you retire. Of course, you don’t necessarily want to force yourself to be as frugal as possible – after all,
2
How to be a good money manager in retirement you worked hard, saved and invested so you can enjoy a comfortable retirement lifestyle. Look for reasonable cost-cutting opportunities, such as eating out less often or eliminating streaming services you don’t use. • Don’t underestimate health care costs. Even when you’re on Medicare and pay for supplemental insurance, health care costs could still be one of your biggest expenses during retirement. Initially, budgeting for $4,500 to $6,500 per person annually may be a good starting point for traditional health care expenses in retirement. However, depending on your health, prescription drug usage and other factors, your costs could be higher or lower. And you may also want to estimate long-term care expenses as part of your plan. • Look for senior discounts. Once you’re a senior, you may be able to find discounts on a wide range of items and activities, such as movies, transportation, groceries, gym memberships and more. By taking advantage of these discounts,
you can save a surprising amount of money and ease pressure on your cash flow. • Establish a sustainable withdrawal strategy. For decades, you’ve been putting money into your IRA and 401(k). But once you’re retired, you will likely need to start taking withdrawals from these accounts. It’s essential that you don’t withdraw so much early in your retirement that you eventually run the risk of outliving your money. You may want to work with a financial professional, who can analyze your entire situation – assets, expenses, lifestyle, expected longevity, etc. – and recommend a sustainable withdrawal rate. Keep in mind that once you turn 72, you may be required to take out a certain amount each year from your 401(k) and your traditional IRA, so you’ll want to incorporate these withdrawals into your overall income strategy. Do whatever it takes to become a good money manager during retirement. You’ll find that it’s well worth the effort.

ASK THE EXPERT Emergency Migraine Headache Relief
An update has been added to the guidelines for the emergency management of migraine headaches. Research supports the use of three medications for migraine relief when administered in an emegency. Intravenous metoclopramide, intravenous prochloperazine, and subcutaneous sumatriptan help treat the pain of the headache. A medication that is administered intravenously means that it is injected into the vein. A subcutaneous medication is injected in the layer of fat under the skin. Injectable medications are often given in an emergency situation because they work faster. Metoclopramide (Reglan) is sometimes used to help reduce the feelings of nausea and vomiting. It does have a boxed warning from the FDA stating that taking too much may lead to a permanent movement disorder. Prochloperazine (Compazine) is used to treat disorders of the brain. Common side effects include sleep-iness and dizziness. Sumatriptan (Imitrex) is available in a pre-filled device that can be delivered with or without a needle.

ASK THE EXPERT Legal Questions Everyone Should Ask (and Answer)
Over the past year or two, you’ve probably spent many sleepless nights worrying about what would happen if you were incapacitated (or worse): • Who will make medical decisions for you? • Who will be responsible for paying your bills? • Who will take care of your dependent children? Margie Connolly, • How can you make sure your elderly parents are taken Attorney care of if they need in-home care or assisted living? Why the recent interest in these questions? Two years of living through the COVID-19 pandemic have left many of us confused and frustrated. However, two things are now crystal clear: 1. Serious, even fatal health issues can occur without warning 2. You need to have a plan ready in case they do More than ever, these days you need to be prepared for the unexpected. Failure to have a plan in place can have serious consequences for you and especially your loved ones. To make sure your wishes are respected, and your plan is followed, you need to have the appropriate legal documents prepared. Depending on your circumstances, these can include: • Will • Trust(s) • Power of attorney • Guardianship • Medical directives (and medical power of attorney) A qualified estate planning attorney can help you prepare the documents you need and keep them updated. This will give you peace of mind and protect you and your loved ones if the worst happens.

Who is responsible for paying the tow bill?
The insurance company responsible for paying the repairs to your vehicle is also responsible for Chuck Charlton paying the tow bill to the body shop of your choice. If the insurance company selected a shop and you prefer to go elsewhere, they are still obligated to pay for the additional transfer tow. If your vehicle was towed at your expense, you will need to provide a copy of the tow bill to the body shop or the insurance company. Pre-paid tow bills are handled differently depending on the insurance company, so contact the shop to find out how you will be reimbursed.

Q: A:
ASK THE EXPERT Is there really a difference between Personal Sound Amplification Products (PSAPs), Over the Counter Hearing Aids (OTCs), and Hearing Aids fit by an Audiologist?
Absolutely, there is a big difference between these tiers of technology. That is why there is a difference in the pricing of these products. I have read articles that Terry Snook state that the PSAPs and OTCs have the AuD, FAAA same kind of processors as hearing aids. PSAPs and OTCs do not have the capability to modify the auditory signal as much as a hearing device. High-end hearing aids have a computer chip that can process up to 500 Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS). Advanced hearing aid circuits can run algorithms to make corrections to improve the clarity of speech. For example, hearing devices can run calculations to weight certain speech cues such as fricative sounds, like the (z), (s), (f) sounds that are faint and difficult to hear. A lot of older technologies use beam forming to help you hear in one direction. This offers some improvement but has limitations. The more advanced high-end hearing aids use different processes to weight and make the speech signal pop up over a noisy or difficult listening environment. All of these features and settings must be programmed and adjusted precisely for each patient’s needs. Although the PSAPs and OTCs will offer some benefit, the overall improvement is very limited. It is very misleading to state that patients will obtain the same results with these low-end products than with hearing aids that are programmed by an Audiologist for the patient’s specific hearing loss and needs.

Lazy Dog expanding to Stafford By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com A new American-style restaurant is coming to Stafford’s quickly-growing Grid development later this year. Lazy Dog Restaurant & Bar, a Californiabased chain of dog-friendly restaurants, is opening in mid-June at 12223 Southwest Freeway, according to the location’s general manager, Chris Eisemann. He said a soft opening is planned for June 14, and the grand opening for the following day. It will be Lazy Dog’s eighth Texas location and the second Houston-area restaurant, joining an existing location at 20030 Northwest Freeway in Cypress. “We’re all about creating a place where
you can connect with your friends and family and enjoy the hospitality you’d get in a small town or mountain town,” Eisemann said. “We felt that in Stafford. We’ve received such a warm welcome. … The people of Houston have been nothing but beneficial toward us and welcomed us with open arms.” Influenced by the lifestyle of the Rocky Mountains, Lazy Dog serves handcrafted American food and drinks with seasonallyinspired ingredients. Among its offerings are the barbecue bison meatloaf, pot roast, southern fried chicken salad with a dipping sauce and crispy deviled eggs. There will also be handcrafted TV dinners made in-house that diners can grab and take home. The restaurant is hiring and has up to 200 new positions available, according to a news release.
“We are looking forward to building a team of exceptionally friendly and talented people that will expand our Lazy Dog family,” Lazy Dog Restaurants founder and CEO Chris Simms said. Lazy Dog will be open for lunch, dinner and weekend brunch with a full bar that includes specialty cocktails and a wide selection of craft beers. The restaurant will also have an outdoor patio around a fire pit and lounge area. For more information, visit lazydogrestaurants.com or follow @ LazyDogRestaurants on Instagram and Facebook. “There’s not something you could walk into a restaurant and ask for that we can’t provide you with,” Eisemann said. “We’ve got something for everybody.”

Scooter’s Coffee is coming to the county next year. (Photo from Facebook)
Beginning next year, a Midwest-based coffee shop will begin expanding its footprint in Southwest Houston and Fort Bend County. Scooter’s Coffee, an Omaha-based drivethrough coffee franchise, has plans to open five Fort Bend County locations in the next few years, according to a news release from the company. Spokesperson Lucy DeLorenzo said the chain will open a Sugar Land location in January, while future locations are also planned for Missouri City, Stafford, Rosenberg and Richmond. The company has nearly 450 stores nationwide, its website says, including 15 locations in Texas. When it opens, the Sugar Land store will be its second Houston-area location, joining an existing one at 26551 Kuykendahl Rd. in Spring.
Scooter’s specializes in artisan espresso drinks, fruit smoothies, baked-from-scratch pastries and features its signature drink – the Caramelicious – along with a line of organic hot and iced teas, single-origin coffee and smoothies. The expansion into the area southwest of Houston is the result of a 10-unit franchise agreement signed by George Ayoub, according to the company. “We’re very excited to see George Ayoub join Scooter’s Coffee,” says Kelly Crummer, Scooter’s Coffee Senior Director of Franchise Recruitment. “He and his family share our core values of integrity, love, humility and courage. He will be a great addition to our franchise system.” For more information on Scooter’s Coffee, visit the company’s website at scooterscoffee. com.

Creole barbecue joint coming to Sugar Land this summer By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Fort Bend County is home to many diverse dining establishments fit for its melting pot of cultures and cuisines, and another one will be making its way to the area later this year in the form of a fusion barbecue joint. According to a news release, Sugar Land native and pitmaster Kennis Williams is set to bring Williams Smokehouse BBQ and Blues to Sugar Land Town Square this summer. Williams and co-founder Furris Greenwood will operate the restaurant, which says it will bring “an old school traditional Texas barbecue concept with a Creole-modern twist.” Along with its food, the restaurant will also feature a rotating selection of live blues music, with a small stage area set up to showcase local musical talent. The 5,500-square foot space at 2105 Lone Star Dr. will also have a patio for diners to enjoy, according to the release. “Growing up, one of my fondest memories was walking into a smoky nightclub in Wallis, Texas and watching my Uncle Earl play alongside the late great B.B. King,” Williams said. “Fast forward to a few years later, I started to become infatuated with the smell of pecan wood burning as my uncles would fire up the barbecue pits in the early mornings at 6 a.m. I thought to myself, these two things that I love – blues music
