EDITOR’S PREVIEW Volume 41• Number 6 JUNE 2022 Landan Kuhlmann Lead Reporter
Newspapers are businesses, too, and we appreciate our supporters As I sit here writing this column, it’s been a little more than two years since Stafford and Fort Bend County came to be known as having the first Houston-area case of COVID-19. It would be just the first forecasting of what has been a tough two years for many people and businesses, including ours. So I just wanted to take some time to give our supporters their due in this space. The only way for newspapers and magazines to survive is for people to keep reading, and for area businesses to keep being willing to advertise with us. Because after all, without advertising revenue, we wouldn’t have any pages on which to tell the stories of our communities. And without our readers, for both our weekly Fort Bend Star publication as well as this monthly one, there would be nobody to tell stories to or about. So this column is dedicated to you, dear readers and supporters. You are the backbone
of publications like ours throughout the region and country, and we cannot thank you enough for your dedicating your time and/ or money to helping us fill these pages every week and every month. To our readers, you are the lifeblood of this community, and the very reason we continue to put out multiple publications every week or month. To the businesses who have continued to spend hard-earned money with us these last couple of years when it could not have been easy to do so – thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, from everyone here at the Fort Bend Star and Fort Bend Business Journal. So as you take a look through this month’s Fort Bend Business Journal, just know that each and every one of you is sincerely appreciated, and we’re excited to keep telling the stories of the Fort Bend community with your support.

Porsche dealership coming to Sugar Land next year By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com There is a new luxury car dealership making its way to Fort Bend County next year. According to a news release from indiGO Auto Group, the group broke ground May 13 on a new Porsche dealership in Sugar Land at 13424 Southwest Fwy. Once completed, it will be the group’s 24th franchised dealership and its second location in Texas. Construction was
expected to start late last month and is expected to take about a year to complete. Porsche Sugar Land will be positioned on a 15,000-square foot spot in the heart of the city, the release said, surrounded by many of its most popular retail centers and cultural institutions. The dealership is expected to be complete by next July, according to the new release. “We look forward to increasing our Porsche footprint here in the greater Houston area,” indiGO Auto Group CEO Kelly Wolf
said. “This is also a chance to enhance Porsche’s brand presence within the Sugar Land community while offering indiGO’s concierge style, white-glove service, and creating a fully immersive, experiential ownership journey for customers.” The release also said indiGO is looking to hire up to 50 employees for a multitude of sales and service positions to staff the future Sugar Land location. Interested employees can inquire at www. indigoautogroup.com/careers.

Louisiana pizza chain opening in Richmond this fall By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com A popular pizza chain in Louisiana is making its first foray into the state and region, and its first location will be in Fort Bend County. Metairie-based Fat Boy’s Pizza announced May 12 that it has plans to open several locations in the Greater Houston region beginning this year. The first one will be at the Grand at Aliana in Richmond at 10505 W. Grand Pkwy., according to a news release from the company. Spokesperson Scott Walker said the restaurant is aiming to have its doors open in Richmond prior to Thanksgiving. “This is an exciting time for us,” vice president of brand development Chad Collura said. “Getting several units in such a hot area will grow our popular brand in a big way.” The chain has existing restaurants in Metairie, the LSU campus in Baton Rouge, Covington and New Orleans’ French Quarter as well as Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Its Richmond restaurant will have a 4,800-square foot interior, the release said, including a 1,500-square foot covered patio

FOCUS With cryptocurrencies so much in the news, you might be wondering if you should invest in them. But “invest” may not be the right word – because, in many ways, cryptocurrencies, or “crypto” for short, are more speculation than investment. But what’s really the difference between a speculator and an investor? Probably the main factor is the differing views of time. A true investor is in it for the long term, building a portfolio that, over many years, can eventually provide the financial resources to achieve important goals, such as a comfortable retirement. But speculators want to see results, in the form of big gains, right now – and they’re often willing to take big risks to achieve these outcomes. There’s also the difference in knowledge. Investors know that they’re buying shares of stock in a company that manufactures products or provides services. But many speculators in cryptocurrency don’t fully comprehend what they’re buying – because crypto just isn’t that easy to understand. Cryptocurrency is a digital asset, and cryptocurrency transactions only exist as digital entries on a blockchain, with the “block” essentially being just a collection of information, or digital ledgers. But even knowing this doesn’t necessarily provide a clear picture to many of those entering the crypto world. In addition to time and understanding, two other elements help define cryptocurrency’s speculative nature:
4
Crypto: Investment or speculation? • Volatility – Cryptocurrencies are subject to truly astonishing price swings, with big gains followed by enormous losses – sometimes within a matter of hours. What’s behind this type of volatility? Actually, several factors are involved. For one thing, the price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies depends heavily on supply and demand – and the demand can skyrocket when media outlets and crypto “celebrities” tout a particular offering. Furthermore, speculators will bet on crypto prices moving up or down, and these bets can trigger a rush on buying and selling, again leading to the rapid price movements. And many purchasers of crypto, especially young people, want to see big profits quickly, so when they lose large amounts, which is common, they often simply quit the market, contributing to the volatility. • Lack of regulation – When you invest in the traditional financial markets, your transactions are regulated
by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the firms with which you invest are typically overseen by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Other agencies are also involved in regulating various investments. These regulating bodies work to ensure the basic fairness of the financial markets and to prevent and investigate fraud. But cryptocurrency exchanges are essentially unregulated, and this lack of oversight has contributed to the growth of “scam” exchanges, crypto market manipulation, excessive trading fees and other predatory practices. This “Wild West” scenario should be of concern to anyone putting money in crypto. The cryptocurrency market is still relatively new, and it’s certainly possible that, in the future, crypto can become more of an investment and less of a speculation. In fact, Congress is actively considering ways to regulate the cryptocurrency market. But for now, caveat emptor – “let the buyer beware.”

STAR OF HOPE BRINGS ‘LOVE IN ACTION’ VAN TO FORT BEND COUNTY COVER STORY BY LANDAN KUHLMANN
For 115 years, Star of Hope has aimed to be a beacon of help and hope for the homeless population in the Greater Houston region. As part of that mission, they are expanding their outreach service into the Fort Bend County. Now equipped with three vans, the nonprofit organization is moving one of those Love In Action vans into the community. “We’re excited about this service we’re going to share with the Fort Bend community, and we’re looking to do some really cool and creative things in that community to let people know about what we do,” Star of Hope Manager of Outreach Services Di Tubbs said. “We’re so much more than what people have looked at us as over the years.” As part of Love in Action, Star of Hope has three case managers – Ray Walker, Alan Jarman, John Hall – who go out on the streets to the homeless and near homeless. Jarman is the one who has been starting the outreach recently in Fort Bend, Tubbs said. “Years ago, Star of Hope decided they
8
wanted to not only take these people in, but also reach out to the homeless hesitant to go into the shelter,” said Scott Arthur, the organization’s director of public relations. “It’s a touch point. We let them know that they’re seen by us – God loves them, we love them, and they’re not invisible.” At the end of the day, the goal of Love in Action is to serve as at least the starting point for those living on the streets to form a relationship with the case managers. The van will be out on the street Monday through Friday looking for those in need wherever they are – under bridges, on the side of the road, or in parking lots – as they seek to serve Fort Bend County. When we see someone, we’re going to pull aside and be very friendly with them,” case manager Ray Walker said. “The first encounter may be something simple like offering some cold water. It may not be something big, but now when they see that van pull up, they know people care and are going to help. Walker has been driving around with the Love in Action Van in Houston and Harris County. As part of the outreach, the case managers provide “Hope Bags” for those they encounter, which include health essentials – such as wash rags, pairs of socks, and bottled water – along with hygiene items for their use. “We’re using these Hope Bags (and the
June 2022 H The Fort Bend Business Journal
vans) to build relationships and to say ‘I see you. I want to know your story and what’s going on with you out here,’” Walker said. “I have sat for an hour listening to a man’s story before, praying with him, and trying to understand what’s going on in his life.” They’re coming to people as a friend, confidante, and supporter, according to Walker – nothing more, nothing less. “We build that relationship and earn the right to help them figure out how to move forward and help them break any barriers that are in their way,” he said. Arthur echoed the sentiment. “When the street homeless see the van, they realize it’s hope – not hype,” he said. “The van is out there letting them know that there is another way. Is today the day you’re going to come in, and maybe change your life?” Changing a life is what Star of Hope aims to do, and that’s exactly what Tubbs said the Love in Action vans are meant to signify. “It exemplifies what the outreach team is doing every day,” she said. “The light and love of Christ is definitely what we want to shine as we go out into the streets and minister to them.” It’s their mission in its simplest form. “We’re excited to connect with those partners to let them know so they know we’re here and have someone to call when they come across someone with a need,”
Tubbs said. “We want to make those connections and let our light shine, and provide our services to those communities in the way we do. Star of Hope’s Mission Beyond the impending Love in Action service, Star of Hope has been serving the Greater Houston area for 115 years. For more than a century, Star of Hope has strived to give home to individuals and families in need. On any given day, the organization’s website says there are approximately 1,000 men, women, and children John Hall distributing being helped at their Men’s Development Center, Women Hope Bags from his Star of & Family Development Center, and Extended Services. Hope Van. (Contributed photo) Its website says their model of purposeful outreach, coupled with community partners and donors, creates an environment in which lives are transformed and people are inspired to make positive changes in their lives. They will work with local organizations such as the Fort Bend Women’s Center and local police departments during their mission in Fort Bend. “The face of homelessness is not just that man standing on the corner with his hand out,” Arthur said. “There’s lot of places out there where we see homelessness. Clients are encouraged to stay with us, not only for a few days or weeks – but up to a year to accomplish their goals.” Among its services offered include Career Development Curriculum, Personal Development Curriculum, and a Spiritual Life Program They also offer Workforce Development, Computer Learning Centers, counseling, an emergency Walk-in Center and Health Clinics, and more. For parents, they also have on-site daycare and parenting classes, according to its website. Through partnerships with other organizations in the areas they serve, Walker said Star of Hope can also help those living on the street get themselves into a home or apartment. According to Walker, he has seen and helped about 30-35 individuals or families find a new living space. And the feeling he said, is almost second to none. “If someone’s been out on the street for years, the look on their face when they put the key in the door for the first time is just one of so much joy. It’s a very moving experience,” he said. “…If a person is wanting that, I’m going to be there for them.” For more information on Star of Hope and its mission, visit the organization’s website at sohmission.org/.

Q: A:
Do I have to use the repair shop with the lowest preliminary estimate?
No, the choice of shop is entirely up to you. Also, the repair shop Chuck Charlton with the lowest estimate is not necessarily the best place to have your car repaired. When one considers the safety issues involved in collision repair, and the considerable investment one has in his or her vehicle the value of quality repairs becomes clear. A modern, well-equipped collision repair center represents an enormous investment in equipment, training and people. As often is the case with goods and service, “you get what you pay for.”

Q: A:
ASK THE EXPERT Why is it so important to have annual hearing tests?
Changes in hearing can occur gradually and slight changes in hearing can be difficult to notice. Once a hearing loss is diagnosed, it is recommended Terry Snook that it be monitored yearly. If a patient has their loss AuD, FAAA corrected with amplification then slight changes in hearing can be accommodated by making adjustments to the patient’s hearing devices. Another benefit is that the Audiologist can review the datalogging obtained on the hearing aids and make adjustments based on the datalogging obtained. This allows the Audiologist to personalize the devices even more for the patient. Firmware updates are also performed on hearing aids when the patient comes in for their annual checkup. Most hearing aid manufactures will make firmware updates available each year to continue to improve functionality and Bluetooth connectivity of their devices. At Advanced Hearing Center we want to make sure that our patients’ hearing aids are functioning properly and that our patients are achieving the best results possible.
