Advanced Dentistry meets needs of families with quality and compassion By Joe Southern JSOUTHERN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
The staff of Advanced Dentistry includes, from the left, Dr. Varghese John (President), Francis ( Registered Hygenist), Krystal Munoz (Lead Assistant), Natalie ( Director Client Relations), and Anna John (Vice-President).
Dr. Varghese John of Advanced Dentistry is always learning and implementing the newest technologies and techniques in the field of dentistry to improve the quality of care for his patients.
From baby teeth, to dentures, to dental cleanings or full mouth reconstruction, Dr.Varghese John of Advanced Dentistry treats much more than just teeth; he treats the patient. Dr. John sees problems with teeth as the root to a myriad of other maladies and helps his patients connect the dots between how they take care of their mouth and the impact it has on the rest of their health. “Most patients don’t understand the correlation between the diseases they already have and their oral health,” he said. With their motto:“The combination of the art and science of dentistry,” Advanced Dentistry strives to help patients look better, feel better and become healthier. In many ways teeth are a mirror of one’s overall health. The condition of one’s teeth and gums are indicative of other diseases in the body such as diabetes, hypertension, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD, or acid reflux), high cholesterol, and metabolic diseases. “I look at patients as a whole, not just teeth,” Dr. John said. He explained that something as seemingly unrelated as sleep apnea affects teeth because most people with sleep apnea grind their teeth at night. “I do a comprehensive evaluation here. I want to get to know my patients first,” he said. Knowing more about the patient’s health, lifestyle, and goals for their smile can help Dr. John better determine the course of treatment necessary. “I have learned that there are human beings on the other end of those teeth,” he said. This core belief is what drove Dr. John’s lifelong ambition to be one of Sugar Land’s highly educated and trained dental physicians. After accomplishing his degree as a doctor of Dental Medicine, he spent the next 15 years earning two fellowships and receiving a prestigious Diplomate status of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. Advanced Dentistry opened in 1996 and for over 25 years Dr. John has been faithfully serving the Sugar Land community both as a distinguished and accomplished dentist and administrative member of his church, the International Bible Church. Advanced Dentistry has evolved into a trusted destination for cosmetic, restorative, dental implants, and general oral wellness center for the whole family. “If we’re only looking for cavities, we’ve missed it,” Dr. John said. He is an advocate for using technology and knowledge to advance his craft and provide better and more comfortable
services to his patients. Here in his Sugar Land office he uses CTscans, T-scans, lasers, Identify (for oral cancer screening), a PRF (platelet-rich fibrin) machine, and more to treat patients. Among his tools are digital radiology, digital photography, and digital smile simulation programs. Dr. John said he uses lasers to disinfect areas under gums, which cuts down considerably on surgical techniques that were once used to accomplish the same thing. “The dental field is constantly adapting to new techniques and developing additional technologies
to perform care in a safer and more minimally invasive way,” he said. “As our practice name implies, Advanced Dentistry is dedicated to the use of state-of-the-art dental technology when providing treatment.” Dr. John performs full comprehensive dentistry; and he excels in more advanced techniques such as bone grafting, implant surgery, and sedation dentistry. “Many patients put off their dental treatment that they need because of anxiety, fear, apprehension and many other emotions… Sedation is a good option to get around this,” he said. Sedation can include everything
from local anesthetic and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) to oral and IV sedation. The advancement in sedation dentistry requires specialized training of the dental physicians. Dr. John’s advanced training and global perspective is only because of his extensive education from some of the best dental institutions around the world. He earned his DMD degree from the University of the East College of Dentistry in Manila, Philippines; did his postgraduate training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons in London; and did his General Training at Mount Vernon Hospital and Northwick Park
Dr. Varghese John goes to extremes to make sure his patients are comfortable and are receiving the best quality care that he can deliver.
Hospital in Middlesex, England. He relocated to the United States in 1993 and earned his license to practice dentistry in the state of Texas. His extensive advanced training includes the Seattle Institute of Cosmetic Dentistry, the world-renowned Misch International Implant Institute, the Belgrade Medical College in Belgrade, Serbia where he did his externship in Implant / Bone grafting surgery and Metropolitan University, Santos, Brazil for extensive bone grafting and reconstruction training. He is also certified through the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation “I have two passions: Dentistry and evangelism,” Dr. John stated. He frequently travels the globe on mission trips and stays active in the community. “The principles that Jesus taught apply to dentistry, too,” he said and truly believes. This core reason is why Advanced Dentistry works with patients on payment plans and options because Dr. John doesn’t want money to become a barrier to anyone’s good health. Dr. John lives in Sugar Land with his wife, Anna, and children, Amy and Nathan. Anna is the office manager of the practice. They are also active members of the International Bible Church in Stafford. To learn more about Advanced Dentistry or their upcoming Women’s Wellness Expo on May 17, please call 281-494-5600 or email receptiondrjohn@gmail.com. The Women’s Wellness Expo is open to the community and will include free seminars and health screenings. There will be hourly raffle drawing and refreshments.
