EDITOR’S PREVIEW Joe Southern Editor

The Avenues of Fort Bend is a lively, pleasant place

O

ne of the things that really struck me when I visited The Avenues of Fort Bend – formerly Oyster Creek Manor Assisted Living and Memory Care – was how vibrant and fresh the community is. I’ve been to many assisted living centers and nursing homes over the years and have found that quite a few have a difficult time masking certain smells or else they reek of bleach and other cleaners. There are some that look like warehouses for the elderly and infirmed. Not so with The Avenues of Fort Bend. It really felt like coming home. Everyone I encountered was happy and friendly. The staff was very pleasant to work with and the residents energetic and engaging. I couldn’t help but notice that everyone I interviewed for this month’s cover story really liked being there. Each staff person I spoke with used words like “family” and “home.” Each one had a passion for what they do. You

could see it in their eyes and hear it in their voices. I know there are many other assisted living and memory care centers out there that are just as good, but to me this was special. I stopped in one Friday and it was Bring Your Dog to Work Day. It was fun to see the staff with their pooches. The Avenues of Fort Bend is a pet-friendly place where the residents can have a dog or cat if they so desire. That kind of companionship is important to people. One of the things I noticed while doing the story is that if something was important to someone, it was important to the staff as well. There is a real sense of belonging at The Avenues of Fort Bend. If you or a loved one are contemplating assisted living someday, I recommend reading the cover story inside this edition of the Fort Bend Business Journal.

BNI group all about relationships and referrals By Theresa D. McClellan Theresa@Fortbendstar.com Every Thursday morning they gather at the Sweetwater Country Club ready to share news about their business and make connections. They are in real estate, law, construction, medical, marketing, and service industries. But there is one thing they have in common; they’re all about building relationships. “Every person here I have a connection with and I can count on everyone here,” said Lana K. Wilson, a Mary Kay sales director and one of the founding members of this Fort Bend Chapter of the Business Network International. The Fort Bend Chapter is the oldest BNI group among the 43 chapters in the state of Texas with multiple members maintaining their 15 to 25 years with the same organization. It’s a way for business owners to grow their business through networking and referrals.

Last year, BNI made over 7.7 million referrals in 8,000 chapters with over 220,000 members in 65 countries resulting in more than $11 billion in business, according to their business webpage. In the Fort Bend chapter, there are 33 members with their own unique business venture and they generated $1.7 million through referrals, said Justin Beam president of the Fort Bend Chapter and owner of Beam Roofing & Construction. They have a steady formula that works. Each week over a shared 90-minute breakfast meeting, they introduce themselves one-byone with a miniFM RADIO STATION commercial about their business FEATURING A VARIETY OF MUSIC specialty. McClellan) professionals, sharpen their presentation skills and elevator speeches by talking about their business, they announce leads or referrals that could help another business person and they share business cards with the idea of “if I help you, you’ll help me.” But more than a formula that works, the lifeblood of the group is the relationships they develop with one another. That was apparent during a recent BNI meeting when they recognized State Farm Insurance agent Tracy Walker who has been coming for more than a decade. More than an agent, Walker’s bubbly, yet no-nonsense personality endeared her to newcomers responsive to her business sense, as well as old-timers who were beneficiaries of her referrals. Back when a medical crisis hit Walker, who developed a rare cancer, BNI members were like a family buoying her spirits as they walked with her on her journey. “I was ready to quit and they kept me going,” said Walker. She listened with tears in her eyes as members heaped praises on her telling how her confidence, business acumen, and cheerleading helped them stay in the game. As she wages her battle with cancer, Walker is also making changes in her life that could lead to a new business venture in health. And she is surrounded by loyal friends she made through her BNI business connections. To learn more about BNI visit www. bnihouston.com.

Sky is the limit at TSTC for homeless man turned college graduate They say it takes a village. For Darryl Jackson, or DJ, that could not be truer. The 22-year-old graduated with his certificate in electrical lineworker technology from Texas State Technical College – a feat that not long ago seemed impossible for this young homeless man. “I never dreamt that I would, or could be a college graduate,” said Jackson. “Statistics show I should be in prison or dead.” Jackson is not a statistic. Instead, he is defying all odds. The Houston native was taken away from his mother because of her drug addiction and his father was never in the picture. Jackson grew up in the foster care system and suffered some abuse. At 18, he aged out, like many teens in the system do. He found himself out in the streets with no place to live, no food to eat and no money for even his most basic needs. “My entire life has been discouraging, frightening and sad,” said Jackson. “I was a very angry child and teen. I didn’t understand why I was suffering.” Jackson spent one year at a homeless shelter. Then went from couch-to-couch, living with different friends. Then, finally a break. One of his friends invited him to visit TSTC for registration. “I had no intention of registering for classes. I was only along for the ride,” said Jackson. “But as soon as I stepped foot on campus everything changed.” That was the day that changed Jackson’s life forever. And although he said he had no idea what a lineworker was or did, he signed up for the program anyways. He figured he had nothing to lose. “What was I thinking, I’m afraid of heights,” Jackson said he thought on the first day of class. “I didn’t know what I had gotten myself into, but I knew I had to do something. I didn’t want to be homeless forever.” Enter Troy Eads, TSTC’s Electrical Lineworker Technology instructor. Jackson credits Eads for much of what he has been able to achieve. As a young homeless man, school was not a priority, survival was. And although Jackson received financial aid and scholarships such as TSTC’s Texan Success Scholarship, it was only enough for tuition and books. He was still homeless and without enough to eat. “DJ was so close to quitting several times, and it hurt me as his instructor because I knew about his life and I wanted so much to see him succeed,” said Eads. “He would sleep in the trucks at the college’s diesel lab and he was always hungry and tired, so I took him into my home.”

Jackson stayed with Eads occasionally, but help also came from Carolyn Arnim from Friendship Church in Richmond, who learned about the lineworker student and his situation during one of her clothing drop-offs for TSTC’s Clothing Closet. Arnim got her whole congregation to help. “As a church in the community we felt compelled to help Darryl. What was happening could not happen on our watch,” said Arnim. “I can’t even put into words what a big deal his graduation is. We’re so proud of him and I truly feel that we needed Darryl more than he needed us. His testimony has resonated with so many in our community.”

The congregation from Friendship Church took Jackson in as one of their own, helping him with spiritual guidance, clothes, food and a place to stay. “Without Troy, TSTC or the church, I would have quit a long time ago. There is no way I could have graduated without these selfless people,” said Jackson. On Aug. 27, Jackson began his career at CenterPoint Energy in Houston with a starting pay of $30 an hour. “I’m ready to get to work and start building my future,” said Jackson. “I have a chance at a completely different life and I’m excited.”

OYSTER CREEK ASSISTED LIVING GETS MAKEOVER AS

COVER STORY

BY JOE SOUTHERN

O

yster Creek Assisted Living and Memory Care has been a gem in Missouri City since 2013, serving area residents and their families in their golden years with quality care and service. The commitment to care hasn’t changed, but the name is. Under new ownership since early 2018, the facility will now be known as The Avenues of Fort Bend.

14

“We wanted a name that would stand out a little bit,” said Anthony OrmsbeeHale, Vice President of People Operations for Civitas Senior Living, the company that now owns Oyster Creek. The Avenues of Fort Bend is an 80-apartment assisted living and memory care facility with floor plans ranging from studio rooms to two-bedroom apartments. Along with the change in name come many upgrades to both the building and the service. Civitas Senior Living has replaced carpets and furniture and updated the kitchen, among other things, to help keep The Avenues of Fort

Bend fresh and inviting. “I’m loving the fact that they’re spending money and renovating,” said Roy Pitrucha, who was hired in April as the Executive Director. The capital investment, however, pales in comparison to the investment Civitas has made in the people, both residents and staff. “I stay involved with all of my people,” Pitrucha said. “We’ve put a team together that I really like.”

My Passion Programs

and employees. The Passion Program includes My Activities, Our Passionate Employee, My Food, My Passion Pathway, and My Wellness. “From activity programming, to medication management, to culinary experiences and more, our Passion Program guides how we do what we do, for our residents and for each other,” the company says on its website. Ormsbee-Hale said the programs are designed to help keep everyone healthy, happy, and engaged. For example, he said everyone gets a My Birthday meal and a celebration on their birthday. “Our feeling is we should celebrate resident birthdays on the day they occur,” he said. “We don’t want them to lose their individual identity.” They also provide Sunday Southern dinners, do cooking demonstration, and a host of other culinary adventures. The My Passion Pathway program is designed to enhance the lives of residents by celebrating their stories, meeting their daily health and wellness needs, and providing a reality of life that meets their unique visions. The My Passion Pathway program includes such things as My Memories and personality assessment, My MAP shadow box (memory care only), meet and greets, My

Community Ambassador, the Intergenerational Life Program, and more. The My Activities program is built around the residents’ passions. That’s the secret to enhancing overall wellness: focus on individual needs while

preserving familiar interests. A seamless marriage of wellness, dietary, and administrative principles, My Activities is the most comprehensive of all of Civitas Senior Living’s signature programs. Through it, they celebrate stories, memories, and milestones while

exceeding care expectations for daily health and wellness needs. It is stimulating, engaging, entertaining, and vital to the overall health and wellness of every one of the residents. The Our Passionate Employee program offers our employees the opportunity to learn, grow, and be recognized for outstanding job performance. The tools and resources offered through Civitas’ Our Passionate Employee program are customizable, achievable, and developed specifically to help all of the employees reach their greatest potential. Civitas believes passionately that investing in their own is the greatest reward.

Family

If there were one word to describe The Avenues of Fort Bend it’s family. “I enjoy coming to work each day. I love my residents,” Pitrucha said. Brandy Lee is the Wellness Director and has 10 years of nursing experience. “Oyster Creek feels like home when you walk through the front doors,” she said. Her job is to oversee the overall wellbeing of the residents, from ordering and distributing medications to helping organize activities and outings. She helps residents with their wellness assessments,

develops care plans, conducts care conferences, and helps integrate service systems. “These are not just residents, they’re extended family members,” she said. “This is not a job, this is my home away from home. This is our family.” Even the residents and their guests agree. “This is a nice place,” said resident Arnold Barban. “It’s good, quiet, and there are nice people here. Everyone seems to get along quite well.” He also likes the benefit of the wellness program. “All of your medical needs, if you have any, are taken care of here. They have great physicians,” he said. Linda Pool is a visitor who comes several times a week to see resident John McIver. “I really like it here. To me it’s like an extended family,” she said. She said she has met many people since she started visiting 18 months ago. “They all look out and take care of each other,” she said. “We’re blessed to have Oyster Creek here.” She also likes that it is pet-friendly. “They can have a dog or a cat and that helps a lot of people,” she said. She said she is glad McIver chose to live at Oyster Creek. “I feel very comfortable that he’s here,” she said.

The memory care section of the facility is a secured environment and the staff has specialized training to care for people with different types of dementia. “Upon hire and initial orientation, our staff has 16 hours of dementia-specific training, in addition to monthly training on various topics” Ormsbee-Hale said. He said they practice validation therapy, which is a holistic therapy that empathizes with the patient and helps connect with them through listening and dignified care. Barban said that was important to him in the short time his wife was there. “She got excellent care here,” he said. Ormsbee-Hale said the community is staffed around the clock and each resident is carefully and compassionately monitored. Barban came to Oyster Creek two years ago for his wife’s care. “Alzheimer’s took her. She was here for six months when she died,” he said. “I’m thankful that she did get the care that she did. She was very active.” Although Barbara Barban passed away six months later from Alzheimer’s, Barban liked the center so much he preferred to stay where he was rather than move out with family. “It was a major grief time and I didn’t want to make a rushed decision,” said the Army veteran who is a retired college professor. Today he is glad he made the decision to stay. “I don’t plan to be anywhere other than here,” he said.

Riverstone community is nearing build-out After 18 years of new home sales and more than 5,700 homes sold, one of the nation’s top-selling master-planned communities is nearing the end of its development cycle. Only about 12 percent of the community remains for new home sales, said Trey Reichert, Vice President and General Manager of Riverstone. “We have about 760 homesites remaining, including developed and undeveloped properties, he said. “We no longer have any 55-foot lots left in Riverstone and will soon be sold out of 50-foot and 65-foot properties. I estimate there are probably only two years of new home sales remaining, possibly less. Eleven builders offer new homes in

Riverstone, where pricing ranges from the $330,000s to the millions. The builders sold 189 homes in the Fort Bend development through the first half of 2018, placing it at No. 41 on a mid-year report released by Robert Charles Lesser & Co. (RCLCO). “For years, Riverstone has been included on the list of top-selling communities, often ranked among the top 10 or top 25, Reichert said. “We have substantially fewer homesites available this year, but we are still pleased with the velocity of sales. Riverstone offers homes with Missouri City and Sugar Land addresses, and represents one of the few opportunities remaining to have a new home with a The Fort Bend Business Journal H September 2018

Sugar Land address, Reichert said. Other draws include amenities such as The Club at Riverstone, which offers a resort-style pool, tennis courts, a splash pad, the Adventure Park playground and a wellappointed clubhouse with fitness center. Children attend highly rated schools in the Fort Bend Independent School District, including Sullivan Elementary located on-site. Kroger opens this fall in The Shops at Riverstone, a 165,000-squarefoot shopping center within the community. “The end of the development cycle is in sight, but we are in no way slowing down, Reichert said.
