EDITOR’S PREVIEW Volume 39 • Number 11 NOVEMBER 2020 Landan Kuhlmann Lead Reporter

Difference being heard at Advanced Hearing Center From the moment I roll out of bed in the morning, I’m bombarded with noises of varying degrees. Whether it’s the clacking of my computer at work, the sound of a blender when trying to make a quick snack or the pounding of cranes and drills at any construction site I may drive past. I don’t typically think much of them – but I might now after my recent visit to Advanced Hearing Center in Sugar Land for this month’s cover story. Dr. Terry Snook, who runs the practice, exudes enthusiasm when you walk in the door. But the exuberance extends beyond simple small talk, and it’s clear from talking to her that she’s got a passion for helping the Sugar Land and Fort Bend County communities with a problem that many of us may not know we have. Over the course of my visit, I learned that at least 48 million Americans suffer from some sort of hearing loss, per the Hearing Health

Foundation, and that it impacts one in every five people over the age of 12. Snook also told me recent research suggests that hearing loss – in any form – has been linked to an increase in dementia, making it much more critical for people to have access to customized hearing care when problems arise. That’s exactly what Advanced Hearing Center has aimed to do since its inception in 2005. From full diagnostic tests, to special customized care once the health issue is identified, Snook and her team have spent the last 15 years putting their best foot forward for the Fort Bend community. She said a passion for helping others the best way she knows how continues to drive her, even more than 30 years after entering the medical field. So if you or a loved one need some help, or just want to check out what Advanced Hearing Center has to offer, read this month’s cover story on Page 8.

CVS adding COVID-19 rapid testing site in Richmond By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com CVS announced Oct. 28 that the company is planning to expand COVID-19 testing services across the state by adding 21 new rapid-results testing sites at certain store locations, including one in Fort Bend County at 1410 Crabbe River Rd. in Richmond. Tests will be available at the store’s onsite MinuteClinic, according to a news release from the company. CVS is adapting some existing locations and adding new ones in order to deliver rapid results at nearly 1,000 sites by the end of the year. Nearly 100 of these rapid-result test sites were operational as of publication. Fort Bend County’s current COVID-19 risk level is low/moderate community risk, according to the county, meaning residents can resume “careful contact” with others. “Access to rapid-result tests enables us to help minimize community spread

(Photo from CVS) of COVID-19 by being able to more quickly identify active COVID-19 infection,” MinuteClinic Chief Medical Officer David Fairchild said. Patients must register in advance at CVS.com to schedule an appointment. Testing is also available for patients ages 12-17, but a parent or legal guardian must

complete the online registration and accompany minors ages 15 and younger. Upon arrival, patients will be given a selfswab kit and instructions while a CVS team member will oversee the test. Test results will generally be available within about 30 minutes of the swab, according to CVS.

ADVANCED HEARING CENTER PROVIDING COMPREHENSIVE AUDIOLOGY AND BALANCE CARE SINCE 2005

COVER STORY

LANDAN KUHLMANN

BY

For more than 30 years, while practicing audiology, Dr. Terry Snook said she’s been a part of many fulfilling patient care experiences in the Houston and Sugar Land area. “I went into Audiology because I found it very interesting, but I came to love the field because I get to meet many fascinating people and improve their quality of life by helping them with their Hearing and Balance needs.” she said. After working in the Houston Medical Center for more than two decades, Snook said she decided that she wanted to offer more customized care for her patients – so, in 2005, Advanced Hearing Center was born at 1223 Lake Pointe Pkwy in Sugar Land. “I felt limited in some of the clinics I was in, because we just didn’t have time to do everything that I wanted to do,” she said. “There’s so much to do (in audiology) that it takes a little more time to do all the different tests and procedures.” According to the Hearing Health Foundation, Snook said about 48 million Americans are currently suffering from some sort of hearing loss, and that affliction happens in one out of every five people over the age of 12. “Hearing is so important, because if you’re not hearing well it can be very fatiguing and isolating,” she said. “What we have found over time is that it can actually be linked to an increase in dementia. So we want to make sure people are hearing as well as they can.” Snook and Advanced Hearing Center have helped people with hearing loss since the beginning. But as the practice and hearing healthcare have evolved over the last 15 years, she said the center has received feedback from the community and added several services to their repertoire.

Aside from hearing aids, the practice has expanded its services by adding pediatric auditory care as well as balance and dizziness testing. The facility offers Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR) testing for babies that fail the newborn screenings at the hospital or babies that need to rule out a hearing loss due to a speech and language delay. The clinic also offers hearing aid evaluations and fittings and diagnostic audiology services as well as balance and dizziness testing. The clinic recently just purchased a rotary chair for their Balance evaluations. Presently, there are only 3 other chairs in the Houston area. They are excited to offer this advanced testing technique to the Sugar Land community. “We’ve added a lot over the 15 years we’ve been here because of the needs of our patients and our community,” she said. The advancement of technology in the field – specifically the addition of computer chips in hearing devices – has also opened up a whole new world of possibilities for patient care, according to Snook. “It’s an extremely exciting time in the field, because so much is changing and there’s so many things we can do,” she said. That being said, Snook said she and her team strive to put the patient first instead of selling products or widgets. They use a medical model to treat the patient’s hearing needs. Upon a patient’s first visit, Advanced Hearing Center conducts a series of initial

diagnostic tests to evaluate every part of the ear. The tests give them the best idea of how to treat a patient, which is then shared with the patient to begin their care. There are a lot of advertisements about online hearing tests and over the counter products. What patients need to know is that the selection and the programming of these products are important to the success that the patient may achieve. “We’re here to correct a medical problem, and that’s what we need to do,” she said. Snook’s desire to provide that personalized care and help as many people as possible has driven her for more than three decades, and she doesn’t plan on stopping – because she said it is fairly rare in this day and age for someone to not have some type of hearing loss. She is a supporter of the Fort Bend Women’s Center, Alzheimer’s Association and the Hearing Loss Association of America as well as the Silver Skeeters program, NFL Players Association and Fort Bend Seniors. “Hearing and balance problems are very complicated and dynamic, and they need to be corrected appropriately or people are not going to do as well as they should.,” she said. “…Unless you have a hearing loss or have experienced vertigo or dizziness, it’s difficult to understand how much it can disrupt your life. That’s why we need to be here to support our patient’s as much as we can.”

They are not seeing a slowdown in their jobs,” said Chesmar Homes’ Debbie Watermann, who has sold 69 townhomes so far in 2020. “I thought that when COVID happened, we would get slower, but that really hasn’t happened. But we have gotten busier.” Johnson Development said the Sienna community will have released 555 new home sites to builders by the end of this year. Nearly 400 are already released, with the remaining sites to be released by the end of December. Sienna general manager Alvin San Miguel said the community’s amenities, which include a playground and dog park at Heritage Park and Phase 1 of Sienna Oaks Lake, have played a role in the spike. The park has 18 acres of open water

Sienna, shown here, is experiencing a huge year-over-year spike in home sales in 2020, with 555 home sites to be released by the end of this year. The 10,800-acre Sienna development has long been one of the nation’s best-selling communities and the top-selling community for Johnson Development, according to the company.

ASK THE EXPERT Can a repair facility save me from paying my deductible?

An honest repair shop will always say “no” to saving deductibles. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance carrier. It basically says that if you have a Chuck Charlton collision loss, you are responsible for the first portion of repairs (your deductible) and the insurance company will pay the rest. If the final repair cost is less, you’re still responsible for the predetermined deductible amount. Any reduction should correctly go back to the insurance company. There are legitimate ways to reduce your cost. An appearance allowance (credit towards your deductible usually for minor cosmetic repairs not completed) is one way but must be consulted with your insurance company. Be wary of the repair shop that offers to save you your deductible. Are they completing all repairs or is your safety being jeopardized with an inadequate repair?

Q:

A:

“The properties we’re releasing this year vary in size from townhome lots to custom home sites because we are seeing buyer demand across the board,” San Miguel said. For more information on the living community, visit siennatx.com

ASK THE EXPERT

Is there anything I can do for dizziness or balance problems?

May God Bless our Men and Women in the Military

According to the latest research most dizziness and balance problems can be accurately diagnosed and successfully treated with a thorough evaluation. Terry Snook Advanced Hearing Center provides this AuD, FAAA specialized testing and works closely with physicians in the area to provide a diagnosis and treatment of balance disorders. Testing includes hearing evaluations because the hearing and balance functions of the inner ear are closely related. Another important test is the VNG or video nystagmography, which records eye movements and looks for signs of vestibular dysfunction or neurological problems by measuring nystagmus (a type of involuntary side-to-side eye movement). Many patients with balance problems or dizziness have vestibular (inner ear) disorders. The vestibular organs of the inner ear provide the brain with information about changes in head movement. If the vestibular system is not functioning properly, dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, spatial disorientation, and other symptoms can result. Other cases of dizziness are due to problems unrelated to the inner ear, such as cardiovascular, neurological, or psychological disorders. A comprehensive evaluation is the first step in finding a resolution to balance problems. Call us today to schedule an evaluation or inquire about the testing and treatments that we offer!

be traveling extensively or pursuing expensive activities, you might not be able to afford to retire as early as someone with more modest ambitions. Of course, there’s no “right” or “wrong” way of living in retirement – we all have our own dreams and preferences. But be aware that different lifestyles do carry different price tags – and have different effects on when you can retire securely. • Sources of retirement income – Obviously, a key factor in knowing whether you can retire early is the amount of retirement income you can rely on. So, you’ll have to assess all your sources: Social Security, any other pensions you might receive, and your investment portfolio, including your 401(k) and IRA. The amounts

you receive from these sources will depend on a variety of factors. For Social Security, the longer you wait until collecting, the larger your monthly payments (although they will “top out” when you reach 70, excluding cost-ofliving adjustments). In regard to your investments and retirement accounts, you’ll need to establish a withdrawal rate that’s appropriate for the length of time you expect to be retired. So, by adjusting these variables – taking Social Security earlier or later, taking more or less money from your retirement accounts – you can help determine if the retirement date you had in mind is viable. • Your feelings about work – Your goals are not static – they can change in response to any number of reasons, both external and personal. When you first decided you wanted to retire early, you might have been motivated by, among other things, a weariness of your current job. But has that changed over time? Have you found new challenges that interest you at work? Or, if you were forced by the pandemic to work remotely, did you actually enjoy the arrangement and want to continue it? After all, many employers have found that their workers can be just as productive working at home, so, even when we’ve gotten past COVID-19, we might see a sizable shift in the geography of the workplace. In any case, if your feelings about work have changed in some way, leading you to think you could work longer than originally planned, you’d likely gain some financial advantages. You’d make more money, for starters, but you’d also keep building your 401(k) and IRA, and you could even possibly delay taking Social Security. Have your retirement plans changed because of COVID-19? If so, you have plenty of company. Nearly 40 percent of those planning to retire say the pandemic has disrupted their intentions, according to the Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. You might have been thinking about retiring early – can you still do so? Even without a crisis, it’s not a bad idea to review your important life goals from time to time. So, in thinking about the possibility of early retirement, consider these factors: • Your retirement lifestyle – Your ability to retire early depends somewhat on what sort of lifestyle you’re anticipating during your retirement years.
