ASK THE EXPERTS ASK THE EXPERT

Can I use my FSA or HSA : Q to purchase A: hearing aids?

Yes, a hearing aid is a qualified medical expense for flexible spending accounts (FSA) and now is the time to begin to think about usi ng your remaining funds for 2022. You may want to start planning to fund your FSA for the following year as well. Although there have been several changes over Terry Snook AuD, FAAA qualified expenses for medical saving plans, hearing aids are still a covered benefit. A Health Savings Account (HSA) is another plan available to taxpayers who a re enro lled in High Deductible Health Plans. Contributions to both FSAs and HSAs are not subject to federal income tax. FSA funds have to be used within a calendar year and HSA contributions roll over and accumulate each year. Hearing aids are qualified expense s on both plans. Please feel free to contact us if you need any additional information.

Q: A:

Can a repair facility save me from paying my deductible? An honest repair shop will always say “no” to saving deductibles. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance Chuck Charlton carrier. It basically says that if you have a collision loss, you are responsible for the first portion of repairs (your deductible) and the insurance company will pay the rest. If the final repair cost is less, you’re still responsible for the predetermined deductible amount. Any reduction should correctly go back to the insurance company. There are legitimate ways to reduce your cost. An appearance allowance (credit towards your deductible usually for minor cosmetic repairs not completed) is one way but must be consulted with your insurance company. Be wary of the repair shop that offers to save you your deductible. Are they completing all repairs or is your safety being jeopardized with an inadequate repair?

or nearly 40 years, the Doehring and Doehring law firm has provided estate planning as well as probate and will assistance to clients. But serving them, partner David Doehring said, goes beyond simply settling their case and then moving on to the next one. In reality, he said, it is about being there for them in every aspect as a human being – not just helping them settle the legal matter which brought them through the door. That has been the family firm’s mantra and belief, Doehring said, since it was founded by his uncles, Richard and Sweeny Doehring, in the late 1980s.

Richard L. Doehring

Gwen Montesino

“I believe in representation of a client as a whole. I reject the premise that a client brings with them a solitary issue,” David Doehring said. “…We believe in a complete holistic view of our practice. The emotional and physical minutiae are central to our analysis, all to achieve greater understanding.” Doehring said his family’s practice has long since been involved in the law for generations that includes Maritime law, law enforcement, court reporting, family business dealings, and solo and larger firm practitioners. In the early 90s, he said the practice became solely dedicated to complex probate matters and their resulting administrations and litigation. “While the firm always had its roots in estate planning and estate

administration, our practice has continued to manifest itself around these core principles,” Doehring said. At Doehring and Doehring, clients will be able to find a team with decades of experience in estate planning, guardianship law counsel, and estate administration, and probate matters including probate litigation. Their team at 2000 S. Dairy Ashford Rd., Suite 298, says they strive to provide exemplary service at every stage of estate planning and high-quality representation through probate and estate proceedings of every complexity. “I do not relent on any aspect of my clients’ cases, nor do I suffer the illusion that the identity of any matter is the same,” Doehring said. “This is vital to successful resolu-

tion, and essential to our clients.” The death of a family member, Doehring said, is tough on anyone, especially when one is left to settle the person’s affairs after they are gone. And that is where the team at Doehring and Doehring enters the picture, he said – to make sure everything gets settled in a way that provides the greatest benefit and service to the family in a time of need. “I am reminded every day that there is nothing like the death of a moneyed member of the family to show persons as they really are,” he said. “…Many a family has been torn apart by poor estate planning, and of particularity, none at all. Each case is a drama in human relationships — and the lawyer, as counselor, draftsman, or advocate, is an integral part of the outcome.” Making sure the outcome is the best possible one for all people involved, Doehring said, is a big reason why he and his family enjoy their work and find it fulfilling. And it’s a big reason why he himself felt called to join the firm in their longtime mission when he was drawn towards practicing law. “I have always been passionate about the idea of law, its inner workings, and its place in our society,” he said. “…The ability to truly help individuals in their most intimate times of need, just being a part of that, is motivating in and of itself...I have been fortunate to grow up within (this firm’s) culture and determined values for all of my life.” To see if Doehring and Doehring is the law firm for you to help with

estate planning, guardianship law counsel, and estate administration, and probate matters including probate litigation, stop on by their office. Community members can also give them a call at 281-497-0093 or visit the firm’s website at www. doehringlaw.com. “A client is a human being deserving of compassion and true un-

derstanding of the entirety of one’s condition. This is not limited to the specific scope of a general matter,” Doehring said. “Rather, a client demands counsel on all aspects of his or her life circumstances. To not meet these demands is to truly not understand the nature of our work, and ultimately provides a disservice to those we serve.”

Here’s Your ‘Recession Survival’ Checklist

It’s unfortunate, but recessions are a fairly normal part of the economic landscape. When a recession occurs, how might you be affected? The answer depends on your individual situation, but regardless of your circumstances, you might want to consider the items in this recession survival checklist: Assess your income stability. If your employment remains steady, you may not have to do anything different during a recession. But if you think your income could be threatened or disrupted, you might want to consider joining the “gig economy” or looking for freelance or consulting opportunities. Review your spending. Look for ways to trim your spending, such as canceling subscription services you don’t use, eating out less often, and so on. Pay down your debts. Try to reduce your debts, especially those with high interest rates. Plan your emergency fund. If you haven’t already built one, try to create an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a liquid account. Review your protection plan. If your health or life insurance is tied to your work, a change in your employment status could jeopardize this coverage. Review all your options for replacing these types of protection. Also, look for ways to lower premiums on home or auto insurance, without significantly sacrificing coverage, to free up money that could be used for health/ life insurance. Keep your long-term goals in mind. Even if you adjust your portfolio during times of volatility, don’t lose

sight of your long-term goals. Trying to “outsmart” the market with shortterm strategies can often lead to missteps and missed opportunities. Don’t stop investing. If you can afford it, try to continue investing. Coming out of a recession, stock prices tend to bottom out and then rebound, so if you had headed to the investment “sidelines,” you would have missed the opportunity to benefit from a market rally. Revisit your performance expectations. During a bear market, you will constantly be reminded of the decline of a particular market index, such as the S&P 500 or the Dow Jones Industrial Average. But instead of focusing on these short-term numbers, look instead at the long-term performance of your portfolio to determine if you’re still on track toward meeting your goals. Assess your risk tolerance. If you find yourself worrying excessively about declines in your investment statements, you may want to reevaluate

your tolerance for risk. One’s risk tolerance can change over time — and it’s important you feel comfortable with the amount of risk you take when investing. Keep diversifying. Diversification is always important for investors — by having a mix of stocks, mutual funds and bonds, you can reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. To cite one example: Higher-quality bonds, such as Treasuries, often move in the opposite direction of stocks, so the presence of these bonds in your portfolio, if appropriate for your goals, can be valuable when market conditions are worsening. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification cannot guarantee profits or protect against all losses in a declining market.) A recession accompanied by a bear market is not pleasant. But by taking the appropriate steps, you can boost your chances of getting through a difficult period and staying on track toward your important financial goals.
