What’s in your liver? Business FORT BEND

COVER STORY By Joe Southern

orget the apple, it’s an egg a day that keeps the doctor away. That’s according to Dr. Kota Reddy of Reddy Cardiac Wellness and Diabetes Reversal Center in Sugar Land. “A good saying is an apple a day keeps the doctor in the neighborhood and an egg a day keeps the doctor away,” he said. Dr. Reddy explained that apples – and all fruits – are made of simple sugars that have a negative impact on the body, especially the liver. “Liver disease is increasing in incidence and they claim in the next five to 10 years its going to be the largest epidemic, more than heart disease and cancers, leading to liver failure and liver transplants,” he said. Dr. Reddy specializes in treating heart and liver diseases as well as diabetes. All of it, he said, is managed through diet. “All roads lead to Rome. All diseases emanate from fatty liver,” he said. “That means if you have a fatty liver it’s a sign

you are developing resistance to insulin, you’re developing leptin resistance. Insulin resistance leads to diabetes and leptin resistance leads to obesity.”

Joey Bangit uses the Fibroscan machine to check the liver of a patient.

Diet: What to eat and what to avoid Dr. Reddy, who is also an author and speaker, has a diet program designed to help, heal, and restore the liver functions and reverse the symptoms of diabetes. Weight loss is one of

Pizza With Reddy Bread

Dr. Reddy has a plan to restore the liver, reverse diabetes and help you lose weight the side effects of his plan. “The goal is simple; if you treat food like medication and eat non-addicting food you’ll never have to worry about your health,” he said. “The purpose of the program is to teach you how to use your grocery store as your pharmacy. That means buying the right foods to help you eat.” If there is one thing Dr. Reddy could remove from the average diet it is sugar. “The right food would be anything that’s free of sugar, starch, and processed food, including sugar substitutes.” That means eliminating all protein bars, protein powders, processed meats, sweets, desserts, ice cream, pies, chocolates, soft drinks, etc., from your diet. Even natural sugars such as carrots, beats, onions, bell peppers, sweet peas, paprika, sweet potatoes, yams, honey, agave nectar, alcohol, vinegar, fruits, fruit juices, and especially high fructose corn syrup need to be taken off the menu. “There’s no difference in the way the body perceives it when you talk about natural sugar, which is fructose, versus manmade fructose. They both go to the liver and they become fat,” Reddy said. Starches to avoid include rice, beans, lentils, breads, and potatoes. “Sugar causes diabetes, starch makes it worse. Sugar is the fire and starch is the gasoline,” he said. So what is good to eat? “Meat doesn’t cause diabetes. Eggs don’t cause obesity or diabetes. Cheese doesn’t cause obesity or diabetes. And it’s not a paleo diet. This is not a paleo diet. This is teaching you what to eat and what not to eat,” he said. Dr. Reddy also promotes and sells his Reddy Bread. He sells two types of flatbreads. “Two breads, one is flax only and the other is flax and soy,” he said. “It is basically a gluten-free, low-carb bread that will not raise your blood sugars. When you eat the bread with my recipes, not only will you lose weight, you will also reverse fatty liver, drop triglycerides and in most cases, reverse the symptoms of diabetes. Most people who are producing enough insulin, have stopped taking their medications all together.” Following his diet plan and eating his bread has immediate affects on the body. “So, when they eat the bread with my recipes and drink their water during breakfast, lunch and dinner: they lose anywhere from 40See Page 16

Reversing diabetes

50 pounds in 100 days, get off medication for diabetes if they’re making insulin, and drop their blood pressure, medications, and cut their grocery bill in half. The results are remarkable.” he said.

Saving your liver “Most of us never worry, think or bother about the liver,” he said. “The liver is an important organ that actually does a lot of work for the body, especially when it comes to processing and breaking down all the toxins in the body. It’s also a powerhouse that’s responsible for managing your blood sugars, maintaining your fat in the body.” Reddy explained that sugar causes a fatty liver. That leads to scarring of the liver, which can cause cirrhosis and cancer. “In the past it was thought that people who consumed alcohol are the ones with severe liver damage. Now we’re learning that apart from alcohol, the food we’re consuming have a significant impact on the liver,” he said. “And more and more people are developing liver failure and liver damage, not because of alcohol but because of eating the wrong food for a long period of time.” Reddy uses a machine called the Fibroscan, which works like an ultrasound machine but it detects defects in the liver. “We are one of the very, very few centers in Texas where we have this equipment,” he said. “Not many people in Texas have this equipment where we can actually test the liver and find out if the liver is fatty or scarred.” He said there are only four in the Houston area that he knows of, including research facilities. “Europeans have been using this technology for the past 13 years. In the past, to find out if you have a fatty liver or scarring of the liver, you do an ultrasound and then do a liver biopsy, which is a invasive process that does not give you 100% accurate information.” He said it has not caught on in the United States because insurance companies will not pay for it yet. “Centers in Europe have evolved to doing Fibroscan as the first line of investigation,” he said. The process is quick and painless and the results are instant. “Fibroscan gives you 10 times more information than a biopsy,” Reddy said. The scan is a first step in making significant, lifesaving changes for the patient. “One: we scan the liver to find out if the liver is scarred, fatty or normal,” he said. “Two: we have a program that teaches you change your diet and lifestyle and reverse your diabetes. Three: the same diet that helps you reverse your diabetes helps you in weight loss. Four: the diet that helps you with weight loss helps reversing fatty liver. And five: we also work in helping to shrink plaques by merely changing diet.” The problem with the liver is it is unseen and does not give any warning signs until it begins to shut down. Reddy said there are certain groups of people who should immediately have their liver checked. “If you’re obese, you need to get your liver checked. If you have diabetes, get your liver checked. If your ferritin level is high, get your liver checked. If your liver enzymes are high, get your liver checked. If you’re an alcoholic, get your liver checked. If you drink wine every night, get your liver checked. If your triglycerides are high, get your liver checked. If you have large hemorrhoids, get your liver checked because it could be from cirrhosis of the liver,” he said, adding that anyone with hepatitis, a family history of liver failure or liver transplants should be included.

“What causes diabetes? Sugar causes diabetes. Fruits cause diabetes. What makes diabetes worse? Sugar and starch make diabetes worse,” Dr. Reddy said. “How do you reverse diabetes? You have to give up sugar and starch.” Diabetes is a disease that causes the body to become resistant to insulin, which leads to a build-up of sugar in the blood. “Diabetes is like a monster that feeds off of you,” Dr. Reddy said. “You give it birth by eating sugar. You maintain it and help it grow by feeding it starch. Sugar, fruits and starch make diabetes a big monster. And with every passing meal it gets bigger and bigger and it feeds off of you. In the end you will end up feeding 15 doctors and your net worth for the medical institution is $4 million. So, if you want to reverse diabetes, kill the monster. The way to kill the monster is to eliminate sugar, fruits and starch.” Using his program, Dr. Reddy was able to get a 93-year-old woman to lose 160 pounds, reverse her diabetes, lower her blood pressure, cure her sleep apnea, get off numerous medications, and leave her wheelchair behind for a walker and then a cane. To watch the video about her remarkable story and improvement in health from ages 93 to 97, visit Dr. Reddy’s facebook page @ https://www.facebook.com/reddycardiology/ “If she can change at 93 and start walking and dropping medications and reversing medical conditions, every one of us can and through diet only,” he said.

Are you ready for Reddy? Reddy has two requirements for his patients to succeed. “First, they can never give excuses,” he said. “People who give excuses, they will never succeed in life.” The second is to ask questions. “People who never ask questions never learn. Question Everything,” he says. Dr. Reddy has a number of resources available to the public. In addition to his Ready Bread, he has four books available. They are “Eat This, Lose That” and an accompanying cookbook and a journal called “Just for Today.” His fourth book is called “Understanding Your Advanced Cardiovascular Profile Report,” which uses a lot of graphics and simplifies medical terminology into layman’s terms. For more information, visit the website or contact the facility today.

How a story may have saved my life

I

have written thousands of stories in the 30 years I have been working as a professional journalist, but none has been more important than the cover story I wrote for this issue of the Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal. I honestly believe Dr. Kota Reddy may have saved my life. When I went to the interview at his office, I expected it to be another routine of gathering information and photos to bring back and craft it into a story for the magazine. As he talked, however, I could almost see scenes of my life flashing before me. I have a number of minor health issues that I just chalked up to old age. As he talked about diet and its impact on the body, I quickly realized that I was probably a slice of pizza and a couple cheeseburgers away from doing some serious damage to my liver and my health. He basically confirmed that by demonstrating his Fibroscan machine on me. A Fibroscan is much like an ultrasound machine but it is designed to detect abnormalities in the liver. Within minutes he showed me that I had above normal scarring on my liver but also significantly high fat. I am not very far from becoming diabetic and/or suffering liver disease. Fortunately this can still be reversed. I am now reading his book “Eat This, Lose That” (“that” being medications and supplements) and am learning how to cut sugars and starches from my diet and eat right. It’s not going to be easy for me but by following his plan I can restore my liver to near full health and also drop very significant weight. Both are very appealing to me.

Although I’ve just started reading the book, I am finding it very similar to another eating plan I’ve studied called the Daniel Plan. It’s a biblically based plan that has you eating whole, natural foods. The main difference between the two plans is the amount of sugars and starches you consume. Dr. Reddy’s plan is designed to restore health to the liver and reverse diabetes. Weight loss is a side effect. The Daniel Plan is a weight loss plan, which explains the difference. While the issues with my liver caught my attention (that’s an understatement), the prospect of losing weight is very appealing. My ideal weight for my age and height is about 160-170 pounds. I’m currently at 230 and a few years ago was as high as 260. It’s no wonder my liver is so unhealthy! The thing about the liver is you can’t see or feel it, so there are no symptoms of liver disease until it’s almost too late. A routine blood test when you have your annual physical has a slim chance of catching a problem. You need to ask your doctor for the test, or better yet, make an appointment with Dr. Reddy. Don’t take your liver and your health for granted. I did and the cost in terms of my health was almost more than I could afford. If you want to learn more about Dr. Reddy and his lifesaving program, read the cover story inside this issue of the Fort Bend/ Katy Business Journal. You’ll be glad you did. Sincerely, Joe Southern Editor, Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal

McElvy Vasquez, LLC new owners of Fort Bend Business Journal

T

he Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal, along with the Fort Bend Star and all other assets of Carter Publications, have been purchased by a Houston-based company focused on print and online journalism. On Tuesday, Oct. 17, McElvy Vasquez LLC, a sister company of McElvy Media, finalized a purchase agreement for the Business Journal, The Star and Star Video Productions, along with related websites formerly owned by Carter Publications Inc. Jonathan McElvy, one of the owners of the company, will serve as president. Frank Vasquez, also an owner, has been named vice president and publisher of both the Business Journal and The Star. Both McElvy and Vasquez have been longtime managers at media companies in and around the Greater Houston area. McElvy served as vice president of Houston Community Newspapers before his company, McElvy Media, purchased The Leader, a weekly newspaper that serves the Heights, Oak Forest and Garden Oaks, in 2012. Vasquez has held management positions at the Houston Press, the Greensheet, and was the local sales director for Houston Community Newspapers.

In 2013, Vasquez joined McElvy Media as an associate publisher. In 2013, McElvy Vasquez entered into a management agreement with Carter Publications, and for the past three years, the company has helped oversee operations at the Business Journal and The Star. In 2014, McElvy and Vasquez, along with Douglas McElvy and Robb Reeves, formed a

sister company to McElvy Media, Charlotte Media Group LLC, and purchased four weekly newspapers and their affiliated websites in the Charlotte, N.C., area. “After a few years of being involved with the Business Journal and The Star, this is an exciting time in the growth of our company,” McElvy said. “We know many people receive their news in all sorts of digital ways, and part of our plan is to greatly enhance the digital products we offer readers. But we also firmly believe in the power of print. We believe a relevant print publication is welcome during a time when people are looking for a reason to separate from their mobile devices.” As publisher, Vasquez said he looks forward to helping reshape the Business Journal and Star brands in the Fort Bend community. “I am excited to have the Business Journal and The Star as part of the McElvy Media family,” Vasquez said. “Over the past three years we have learned much from the community and what makes Fort Bend special. As the new publisher, I look forward to meeting with community leaders and readers to determine how we can help rebuild the Business Journal and The Star into must-read publications.”

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital achieves prestigious Magnet Recognition

H

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has earned Magnet Recognition — the highest and most respected national honor for nursing excellence – from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Houston Methodist Sugar Land is the only hospital in Fort Bend and one of just 42 in Texas to receive Magnet designation. Nationwide, just 461 hospitals hold the prestigious honor, which is awarded to hospitals with superior nursing professionalism, teamwork and patient care following a rigorous credentialing process. “This is a tremendous honor and a welldeserved recognition for our staff, which exemplifies the very best in nursing care every single day,” said Janet Leatherwood, vice president and chief nursing officer. “Achieving Magnet recognition is a lengthy, challenging journey, and one that we’ve worked on for several years. At the heart

of the process, however, are the day-to-day interactions we have with each other and with our patients. The patient care and commitment to quality that our nurses and interprofessional staff demonstrate is second-to-none, and all of us are grateful for the ongoing support of our entire leadership team, physicians and staff.” The credentialing process evaluates a number of factors related to nursing, including the quality of nursing leadership; coordination and collaboration across specialties; and processes for measuring and improving the quality and delivery of care. Research shows that hospitals that earn Magnet recognition have increased patient satisfaction, higher levels of patient safety and care and higher rates of job satisfaction among nursing staff. The hospital’s designation will remain in place through September 2021, and can be renewed at that time. “Magnet designation is recognition of the culture of excellence

that we have worked so hard to build and maintain here – the cornerstone of how we serve the community,” said Chris Siebenaler, senior regional vice president and chief executive officer. “It is the ‘gold standard’ for nursing excellence and acknowledgement of the outstanding care that our patients receive every day. I am extremely proud of our team!” The Magnet Recognition Program identifies health care organizations that provide the very best in nursing care and professionalism in nursing practice. The Magnet Recognition Program is the highest national honor for nursing excellence and provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark for measuring quality of care. OakBend Medical Center Junior Volunteers learn about caring for others

T

he Junior Volunteer Program at OakBend Medical Center strives to introduce local high school students to the diverse career opportunities within healthcare and to experience the satisfaction from serving others while developing a sense of civic responsibility. OakBend Medical Center’s 2017 Junior Volunteer Program began in mid-June and the students had rotations through clinical as well as non-clinical departments and also attended interactive bi-weekly presentations by varied healthcare professionals. The experience enriches students’ knowledge base and allows high school students to observe how multiple hospital departments synchronize their operations to provide the best and safest patient care. The program ended shortly before Hurricane Harvey hit, with students reviewing their experiences with CEO Joe Freudenberger

and receiving completion certificates. The Junior Volunteers commented how OakBend’s program brought value to their future career path and were appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of the program. “What we don’t realize is that hospitals don’t just mean doctors. There are so many different groups of people that work together to keep a hospital running,” said Anushka Abedin, one of the Junior Volunteers. “During orientation, and even during the interviews, we were constantly being reminded that OakBend values compassion and hospitality. Through this Junior Volunteer program, I was able to personally witness this compassion come to life,” commented Chisom Ogbonna, another Junior Volunteer. “I have learned that every single employee that enters the hospital, despite having differences in professional duties, cooperate towards one common goal: to cure and heal every single patient who enters the building, regardless of financial ability. The staff’s November 2017 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

compassionate attitudes towards their patients reflect their attitudes towards each other, which makes the working environment a very comfortable, friendly place to be, yet still very professional and respectful,” said Heeba Rahman, also part of this year’s Junior Volunteer program. According to Mautin Ashimiu, “The loving and caring atmosphere at OakBend really made the experience much more fun. All the advice from the nurses that I met has inspired me to really pursue a career in the medical field because of all the lives I can impact.” In keeping with OakBend Medical Center’s focus on community, the Junior Volunteer Program is primarily meant for students residing in and attending high schools in OakBend’s primary service area. The students are required to commit to two days per week during the seven-week summer schedule. The volunteer program is an opportunity to learn more about Healthcare professions and make informed decisions about career choices in healthcare.

Four ways to get better sleep at night

F

ew things feel as good as a restful night’s sleep. The restorative power of sleep can help you feel refreshed and ready for the day. But, if you find yourself groggy and crabby in the morning, you may not be getting enough sleep. If you’re often having issues with sleep, it’s time to make a change. “Getting the right amount of sleep is important for everyone,” said Dr. Raziuddin Ahmed, a board-certified sleep medicine specialist with Houston Methodist Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Specialists. “Sleep helps your brain remember information and better allows you to pay attention during the day.” What’s considered a good amount of sleep? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends 7 to 9 hours of sleep for adults, 8.5 hours or more for teens and 10 hours or more for children. Getting less sleep than you need could lead to an increase in blood pressure and stress hormones, lower glucose tolerance and weight gain. To improve your odds of getting a better night’s rest, try these tips: 1. Be consistent. Make it a habit to go to sleep and arise at the same time every day — even on the weekends. 2. Keep a sleep-friendly bedroom. Keep your bedroom dark,

free of distracting noise and at a comfortable temperature. 3. Unplug early. Shut down screens (TVs, laptops, cell phones, etc.) an hour or more before bedtime. 4. Get exercise. Regular exercise often can help you sleep better and reduce your stress level. For some people, poor sleep may be caused by an untreated sleep disorder, such as insomnia, narcolepsy, sleep apnea or restless Dr. Raziuddin Ahmed legs syndrome. If you wake up frequently at night, snore loudly, wake up exhausted or nod off during the day, you may have a sleep disorder. “Sleep disorders can make you feel like you’re never going to get a good night’s sleep again. That’s simply not true,” Ahmed said. “With treatment, many patients can get back to better sleep and improve their quality of life.” To schedule an appointment with Ahmed, at Houston Methodist Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Specialists, visit houstonmethodist.org/appointments or call 281-242-2444.
