I don’t own it but I can certainly recommend Southern Ice Cream

W

hen you have a last name like Southern, it’s often fun to see your name on a business and joke about owning it. If I could own every business with Southern in the name, I would be incredibly wealthy. I don’t and I’m not. Of all the businesses bearing my name, however, the one that really got me excited is Southern Ice Cream. I mean seriously, who doesn’t like ice cream? It was thrilling to get to meet Michelle and Bobby Barton to do the cover story for this month’s edition of the Fort Bend Business Journal. They are a young, funloving couple who are making an impact in the community one scoop at a time. When it comes to business, they are all business. Their business, however, is about good-tasting pleasure and fun and I gather from my brief time with them that they have some serious fun with their work. Located in Stafford, Southern Ice Cream is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The business was started in 1978 by a friend of Michelle’s family, who sold it to her mother and stepfather, Mike and Sharon Johnston. When Mike Johnston passed away in 2015, Michelle’s mother sold the business to the Bartons the next year. Since then, business has been booming. As an ice cream distributorship – they don’t make

their own ice cream – they provide the products to independent contractors who most of us see driving up and down neighborhood streets with music playing. Southern Ice Cream does have its own trucks and pushcarts, but they are used for special events where they are hired to provide a service. You can also get their ice cream at Skeeters games. The bonus to buying ice cream from Southern Ice Cream or any of their customers is the fact that they give generously back to the community. The Bartons are involved with Child Advocates of Fort Bend and also sponsor several Little League teams. Whenever they partner with a fundraising effort, they donate back to the cause. It is this level of integrity and commitment to community that has allowed Southern Ice Cream to flourish for 40 years in Fort Bend County. Although ice cream, like any treat, should be consumed in moderation, I have no qualms about supporting a business that supports the community the way the Bartons do. That, and how can I turn down a delicious product that bears my name? Be sure to learn more about Southern Ice Cream inside this edition of the Fort Bend Business Journal. Sprouts to anchor new Telfair development By Theresa D. McClellan Theresa@Fortbendstar.com Sprouts Farmers Market is coming to Sugar Land. The fresh foods store, that’s been called the affordable Whole Foods, will be the anchor store in the University Commons development on the corner of University and US Highway 59 on the south side of the entrance to Telfair. Vista Equities Group broke ground earlier this year on Phase II of University Commons in Sugar Land with plans to bring 108,000 square feet of new retail space to the community. Phase 1 has 155,000 square feet of space that is 95 percent leased and anchored by Burlington. As the anchor store for Phase II, Sprouts will have 30,000 square feet to bring its trademark fresh and organic produce and meats, according to a press release from the Vista Group. “Sprouts stores come in all shapes and sizes, but no matter what, we put our

customers first. Our Real Estate team creates refreshing retail spaces that complement the local environment. That’s why Sprouts is always conveniently located and easy to navigate,” Sprouts states on its website.

NOW OPEN

The developer said the complex will open by February 2019. Their second anchor store, filling 10,000 square feet, is Ulta, a prominent TELFAIR DEVELOPMENT CONTINUES pg.20

COVER STORY

BY JOE SOUTHERN

Michelle and Bobby Barton There is something about that first, sweet bite of cool, creamy ice cream that just excites the senses and sends a surge of OMG throughout the body and turns even the roughest and gruffest of adults into a child again. It’s a classic response that Michelle and Bobby Barton never get tired of seeing. As owners of Southern Ice Cream, they witness it every day, no matter the season. “There’s not a whole lot that makes people happy like ice cream does,” Bobby said. “No matter who you give ice cream to, they’re going to have a smile on their face.” Located in Stafford, Southern Ice Cream is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. “The business was started in 1978 by a family friend of my parents,” Michelle recalled. “When my step-dad, Mike Johnston, passed away in 2015, Bobby and I purchased the business in 2016 from my mother, Sharon Johnston.” Michelle is the majority owner; making Southern Ice Cream a woman owned certified business. She said the timing of the transition created a huge challenge and an opportunity for them. “That same year Blue Bell had their listeria outbreak and it was kind of a crazy time in the ice cream world. We were getting calls

from all over and we had to recall Blue Bell and do all of these things to get people ice cream,” she said. “We ended up getting a lot of business opportunities as a result of it. We grew quite a bit. That also opened up the opportunity to get into the school business, so we were able to bid on that business. We’re currently servicing Fort Bend ISD, Lamar Consolidated ISD, and many others around the Houston metropolitan area.” Bobby noted they are in more than 30 school districts, “covering areas from Galveston to Victoria, to Bryan/College Station and all the way up to Nacogdoches and down.” “After we were awarded the schools business, we started carrying Hershey’s Ice Cream that has a full line of items that meet the USDA smart snacks in school standards,” Michelle said. “We have also grown busier with other product lines as well, like Blue Bunny. As the population of this area continues to expand, we’ve had to expand our freezer and do some remodeling.” “We’ve added more office space. We’ve added a catering kitchen … we’ve added 2,900-square feet to our existing freezer,” Bobby said. “The other line we’ve brought in is Social Ice, which is a wine-infused popsicle.”

The Fort Bend Business Journal H June 2018

“A lot of people are interested in that and where can they get it,” Michelle chimed in, adding that they sell it at their warehouse and can also deliver it stocked in pushcarts for catered events. Among their product lines, Southern Ice Cream carries Blue Bunny, Good Humor, Hershey’s, House of Flavor, Ashby’s, Social Ice, and Rosati’s Italian Ice. The business isn’t the only thing that’s grown for the Bartons. So has their family. They now have two sons, one born in 2015 and the other in 2017. A growing business and growing family makes for exciting times for the Bartons. As committed as they are to their family and their business, they are also committed to the community. In addition to sponsoring local Little League Baseball teams, they are also a sponsor with the Sugar Land Skeeters and have partnered with Child Advocates of Fort Bend. “We’re working with the Child Advocates of Fort Bend. … We have a pushcart at their facility that we refill in hopes to help comfort them through difficult times,” Bobby said. He said they also work with the agency’s Wings program, which helps teach life skills to children 16-18 who are about to transition CONTINUES...

The reason we pull our trucks down to negative “There’s a lot of things people don’t realize,” Michelle said. 40 is because it’s really hot here in Texas. So in order to get that “They think it’s just the ice cream truck going up and down the product out of a truck, loaded onto a dolly, into the customer’s street and it’s really not; it’s pre-planned and scheduled events.” facility, let a customer check it, and let them put it in their freezer, “Whenever you book a pushcart event from Southern Ice I want to make sure it never gets above negative 20,” Bobby said. How to blend generations in the workplace By Theresa D. McClellan Theresa@Fortbendstar.com Like the “Living Years’ song says, every generation blames the one before. When those multiple generations are working together in the same space, however, that mindset can become a toxic brew. That’s why the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce held a luncheon workshop recently on generational diversity and making it work for you. Mike Dobert, head of HR Alignment, which sponsored the luncheon, has 25 years in human resources and business strategy as well as certifications in diversity, leadership and change management. One key to working together intergenerationally is understanding how people think and what shapes their thinking. For example, each of us has lived through a common set of historical events and that helps shape our attitude and vision. That is why people of similar ages can have common values, explained Dobert.

So those who are now between 73 and 96 years of age and nicknamed “veterans or traditionalists” were born before World War II and have seen the impact of the Great Depression. They will have core values of sacrifice, respect for authority and delayed reward. These are the ones who would buy a car for cash and the next day start putting away money for the next car, said Dobert. Baby boomers who grew up in times of prosperity and the civil rights era and are now between the ages of 54 and 72 will still have a hard work ethic as well as being

optimistic, believe in personal gratification, health and wellness, personal growth and involvement in their community. “When you think of the 1960s and 1970s, you think of how many people were getting involved,” said Dobert. Generation X is the first generation that entered the workforce when there was downsizing. Some have called Gex X, those who are now 38-53 years old, the generation with no direction, Dobert said. “Before people worked for a company for 30 years. That wasn’t happening and it affected their approach and entrepreneurial spirit. Their core value was diversity, understanding different points of view and thinking globally,” said Dobert The next generation, called Generation Y, or the millennials, were raised on the Internet. They are between 23 and 37 years

beauty store with 8,000 stores across the country. Other tenants include a nail salon and spa; Sleep Number Mattress and Bedding; Tropical Smoothie; a restaurant called U’Maki, and another called the Luna Grill; Hollywood Feed, a holistic pet store; Solutions, a tutoring facility; and about eight other leases with restaurants and services under negotiation. The Vista Equities Group and Vista Private Equity Group announced in 2015 the acquisition of 12.80 acres of property located on the northwest corner of US Highway 59 and University Boulevard. “This is the main entrance to Newland Communities highly successful masterplanned community of Telfair in Sugar Land, Texas. The property is adjacent to University Commons, a Vista Equities Group and Vista Private Equity Group acquisition that took place in late 2014. The project, University

Commons II, will include a ground-up retail development that is planned to include national and regional retail tenants, along with small shop tenants. The project will also include pad sites for restaurants available on a build-to-suit or ground leases basis. University Commons II is an estimated $33 million project,” Vista said in a prepared statement. project, which was designed by Dallas-based O’Brien Architects. The project is expected to be ready for tenant build-out in December. The third phase of undetermined size is also planned at the property. According to artist renderings, the development will have covered walkways, patios, gathering spaces, benches and bike racks. The traditional Sugar Land red brick will be traded out for wood, stone and color accents. Earlier this year Sprouts announced a partnership with Instacart, allowing it to deliver groceries at their other seven Houston area stores in Cinco Ranch, Cypress, Jersey Village, Katy, Pearland, the Heights and West Houston. It is unclear whether this location will have the grocery delivery service. Sprouts is based in Arizona, but Texas has more stores with 43 locations compared to 34 in Arizona. California has the largest number with 108 locations.

old, are globally connected and have more access to information. They have optimism at their core and love civic duty. “This generation appreciates time paid off so they have time to volunteer,” he said. Generation Z or nicknamed “digital natives” are those children born to Generation X. They have seen uncertainty but they are willing to be independent and take chances and explore. They were born in 1996 and beyond. “This is a generation of experiences. It is interesting where their focus is,” said Dobert. For employers, finding that next generation of workers can prove difficult, said Stewart Jacobson, founder, and president of Dearborn & Creggs Investments, who was one of three business people on stage representing the baby boomers, Generation X, and the Millennials. He presented the baby boomer mindset. Jacobson founded the company 30 years ago and can easily find clients that he wants to do a good job for. “It’s hard to find people to join me on this journey, I need to bring young people who understand,” he said.

So he found the old-fashioned referral network is best. That’s how he found one of his star financial counselors, Jesse Carrillo, an accomplished educator from El Paso. Since the investment firm targets those in the education field and public servants, Carrillo said he thought it was a perfect fit. “The millennial mindset is always thinking of greener pastures. But Stuart asked me to participate in the leadership team,” said Carrillo. Bringing everyone to the table is a way to excel, said Carrillo. “Throw them some responsibility. Give them an opportunity to shine. You might be surprised.” For Nona Austin-King of Himalayan Drug Company, from Generation X, she cautions against stereotypes and noted that she takes an individual approach and a collaborative style with her team. “I focus on the goal and what does success look like. Everyone gets there a different way. I value those boomers who have a lot of knowledge and built the organization to where it is today. But also the newer staff who know tech better. We come to a better solution when we share and The Fort Bend Business Journal H June 2018

leverage others strengths,” she said. Austin-King also ensures getting the right fit with new hires because of a cross-section of staff interview the clients. Brooke Pankey, the millennial, joined HCCS as an intern and stayed with the construction software company, which is known as the Google workplace of Sugar Land because of its relaxed and innovative work atmosphere that encourages creativity. “You can bring your dogs, your kids. You can work from home. He wanted them to feel at home so they can sty and get the best work done,” she said. They recently had a Shark Tank style session with employees pitching ideas to the company. “The CEO is going to execute them all!” she said. Austin-King said she looks at what her employees need. “Training, mentoring, job-coaching? How do I help them grow? If they want to be vice president of marketing someday I’m OK with that and put my personal bias away. When I see people grow, that doesn’t take away from me, that shows me I’m doing something right. My higher power is to grow people.”
