When the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) announced teachers would be eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations on March 3, Kristin Lucas wanted to be among the first to join the ranks of inoculated educators in Fort Bend County. She received her first dose of the Pfizer vaccine four days later on March 7. This past Sunday and

Monday, many more school workers in the region also

were vaccinated as Memorial Hermann Sugar Land

Hospital held a drivethrough clinic dedicated to teachers and other school employees at Smart Financial Centre. Lucas has been teaching math at Dulles High School since 1997. “Once they had doses ready, it was a very smooth process,” Lucas said. “You drove up to a numbered tent and a nurse came over to your car. I was particularly impressed with mine as I never felt the needle.” One Fort Bend ISD maintenance worker who asked

to remain anonymous, who said Monday he’d been employed by the district for nearly two years, said he waited about 15 minutes in line for his shot and said several of his colleagues told him they planned to register for their vaccinations as well. But it wasn’t just educators or school employees who were newly eligible to get vaccinated at the Memorial Hermann clinic.

Minute Maid moving from Sugar Land to Atlanta By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

After 12 years in Sugar Land and more than 50 years in the Houston area, Minute Maid has closed its Town Square headquarters and is relocating to Atlanta, according to CoStar, a commercial real estate information company. The juice brand, a product line of The CocaCola Company since 1960, opened its headquarters at 2150 Town Square Place in Sugar Land on Feb. 16, 2009. Minute Maid first moved to Houston in 1964. According to Planned Community Developers Ltd., the 185,000 square foot office building in Sugar Land has eight floors. The developer listed six floor plans currently available at a lease rate of $25.50 per square foot, and an estimated operating expense of $12.58 per square foot.

Mothers support women-led small businesses with markets By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

If you've been a frequent visitor to farmer’s markets around the Houston area for the past few years, there’s a good chance you’ve stumbled upon a Heart To Market event. Heart To Market has put on pop-up markets in Cypress, downtown Houston, the Heights, Memorial and Sugar Land, where they’re returning in less than two weeks. From March 26-28, the

their client reach in a new location. And it also gives us the opportunity to support different communities as well.” Tai, a resident of Garden Oaks, and Mei, a Sugar Land native, planted the seeds for their joint venture in 2018 at A 2nd Cup in the Heights after they each had started their own small businesses. Tai invited Mei, owner of MAMAMEIDIT, which holds do-it-yourself craft workshops for mothers, to give a workshop for her local moms group, and the two hit it off

and began talking about local markets. “Luckily, (Mei) puts up with all of my crazy ideas,” Tai said. “And she is very even keeled and willing to sort of make anything happen.” For their Sugar Land event, Tai and Mei are donating 10 percent of the market’s sales to Lunches of Love, a Rosenberg-based nonprofit with a mission of curbing child hunger and serving under-

Heart To Market team of Katie Tai and Amy Mei will host their market at Sugar Land Town Square, featuring more than 30 local vendors, small shops and specialty brands dedicated to mothers and young children. “We try to kind of pop up in different areas around Houston, and there's two reasons for that,” Tai said. “One is it allows our vendors to connect with new audiences. So if they're based in Haiti, and they've never been to Sugar Land, maybe they can expand

As Sugar Land City Council member William Ferguson recently sat and watched Netflix’s “The Queen’s Gambit,” one particular scene at the end of the show proved to be the origin story of the city’s latest attempt to bring Sugar Land and the Houston region together. “I grew up loving the game (of chess), I’m just no good at it. I didn’t have any

competition. ‘The Queen’s Gambit’ came along, and it sparked an interest for a lot of people – including me – to get back into the game,” Ferguson said. “She’s walking through that Russian town and all those older folks are sitting around chess tables. I thought, ‘What a beautiful picture for Town Center.’ I thought it would be a beautiful setting.” As it turns out, his assessment wound up being a hit. Dozens of chess players flocked to Sugar Land Town Square on Saturday for the

Richmond teen accused County Judge issues mask of shooting mother to death order for county buildings By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

was being held on a $250,000 bond, according to a news release from the department. The victim, 47-year-old Yolanda Royston, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to FBCSO. The sheriff’s office said deputies responded to the 18100 block of Emerybrook Court in Richmond around 9:20 p.m. March 11 to find Royston inside the house with a gunshot wound. A short time later, FBCSO said the Alvin Police Department located Monono’s vehicle, and he was arrested following a short pursuit, according to police. Police said it is not known what led up to the alleged shooting. “Our hearts go out to the family and neighbors who have been affected by this tragedy,” Sheriff Eric Fagan said.

Members of the public and Fort Bend County employees are required to wear masks inside all county buildings, according to an order issued March 9 by Fort Bend County Judge KP George. The move came in response to Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest executive order, which went into effect March 10, lifting the statewide mask mandate and allowing businesses to open at 100 percent capacity. The county is also continuing to screen for COVID-19 symptoms and performing temperature checks at its facilities. “Texans believe in hard work and grit,”

George wrote March 10 on Facebook. “Not magical solutions or buying into distractions. We've worked this hard to come this far. As we vaccinate thousands and thousands of people daily, we are closer and closer to ending this pandemic once and for all. Let's not lose sight.” County employees are required to wear masks in all public areas, including while having conversations within 6 feet of each other, and can remove the mask only once they have reached their primary work area and maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from others. The county’s order also complies with a Jan. 21 executive order from President Joe Biden, which requires face coverings to be worn by all public

“Jimmie Hermes has enjoyed sports his whole life. He admits it hasn’t been without it’s bumps and bruises. His current passion is golf. Jimmie plays in Pro-Am games, taking him all over the country. After having major surgery, Jimmie started noticing chronic shoulder & back pain that was affecting his swing. ‘The pain was becoming so intense I couldn’t sleep at night. I decided to go to SLHC to find relief. The doctors were easy to talk to and understand. The whole team was awesome and they made me feel like family.’ Jimmie got spinal decompression, laser therapy and pressure wave therapy which decreased his pain 90% the first week and he was able to sleep at night. As he progressed treatment he was able to stop pain medication and his range of motion increased. Jimmie was able to compete in Mississippi’s Pro-Am tournament and play golf 3 straight days. ‘Sure, I was stiff and sore but it went away this time. I’m thrilled that I can continue doing what I enjoy.” - OJimmy Hermes

transportation riders and vehicle operators. All visitors to Fort Bend Transit facilities are also required to wear masks. According to the county’s order, Fort Bend County is providing reasonable accommodations upon request to its employees and to “persons seeking essential county services” for those who are unable to wear a face covering due to a physical or mental disability or other condition, such as asthma, chronic pulmonary disease, posttraumatic stress disorder, autism and cerebral palsy. Under the governor’s executive order, businesses or other establishments can require employees or customers to follow additional hygiene measures, including wearing a face covering. While Fort Bend County cannot mandate the use of masks in all public places under the executive order, the county order said masking is still “strongly encouraged.”

Spring ahead, take advantage of great outdoors While I’ve never quite understood the need to switch between Daylight Savings Time and Standard Time, I’ve become quite accustomed to the mantra of “spring ahead, fall behind” having lived in the Central Time Zone for most of my life. I’m looking forward to the warmer weather across the Houston area as a chance to explore more of what Fort Bend County has to offer, just like I’m sure many of you are, with or without kids on Spring Break. I’ve seen many comments already from friends across Texas that the last few days have begun to feel like summer, even if they’re seasoned Tex-

to keep shining a light on the places that I have a chance to evaluate myself. So if you’re going to be out on the running trails or if you can refer me to the best crawfish boil in your town, don’t hesitate to let me know on Twitter @StefanJModrich or email me smodrich@ fortbendstar.com. There’s the Edible Arbor Trail in Missouri City and a network of hiking paths at Cullinan Park, RiverPark Nature Trails or Brazos River Park in Sugar Land, where you can f ly a kite and take in live music and other cultural performances from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. March 27. ans who know to expect weather more like this than that of the cold snap we experienced a month ago. Whether you’re new to the area or not, I’m interested in trying to gather recommendations from readers across the county about places to see, things to do and food and drink to consume. And I’ll do my best

this week’s front page, a pair of local mothers who run Heart To Market will host a series of farmer’s market events from March 26-28 at Sugar Land Town Square from 6-8 p.m. March 26 and 10 a.m. 4-p.m. March 27-28 Ramón Ayala, acclaimed accordion player from Monterrey, Mexico, will make his way to Missouri City’s Army Recruiting Station this Saturday for a concert featuring iconic Norteño and Conjunto tunes. Further out, of course, we have mainstay attractions like the George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond and Seabourne Creek Nature

Park in Rosenberg. But closer to the Fort Bend Star office, I’m looking forward to checking out the Stafford City Park & Cricket Ground as well as any places where outdoor recreation can safely take place semiofficially in a league or in informal open play, whether it’s sand volleyball, soccer, basketball or baseball. It’s possible that all of these things are right up your alley, and equally possible that none of this is your style, which is why it’s all the more important for me to hear from you about what your interests and hobbies are. While I don’t welcome

the loss of an hour of sleep at the hands of Daylight Savings Time, I’m certainly happy to have extra Texas sunshine going forward into the spring and summer. It’s one of the things I find most enjoyable about being able to call myself an adopted Texan. As vaccines continue to be injected into arms and masking and other safe practices continue to allow businesses and local governments to gradually open up our great state that we call home, I’m looking forward to seeing more and more of you out there, wherever “there” in Fort Bend County that may be.

Multiple county libraries resume in-person operations By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Fort Bend County Libraries (FBCL) reopened four local locations Monday. “We miss all of our patrons, and we know how important our libraries are to their daily lives,” Library Director Clara Russell said in a news release. “We want to return to ‘normal’ service as soon as possible, but this needs to happen in phases so that we can keep everyone safe and healthy.” As part of Phase 3 of the county’s reopening plan, the Missouri City Branch Library, the Sienna Branch Library, the University Branch Library in Sugar Land, and the George Memorial Library in Richmond resumed in-person operations. The Books & More curbside pickup service continues to be available at all FBCL locations. All who enter FBCL buildings will start at a healthscreening station to have their temperature taken, Fort Bend County Judge KP George said during a Facebook Live broadcast March 11. Hand sanitizer will be

provided at each of the five locations open for in-person operations. Patrons age 2 and older who enter the library building are required to wear a mask and follow all socialdistancing guidelines. Those who cannot wear a mask will be assisted through the contact-free curbside pick-up service. The hours for the five Phase 3 locations, as well as for the remaining curbside-only locations, are as

follows: • Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m.-6 p.m. • Friday-Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. • Sunday: Closed at all locations The Mamie George Branch Library in Stafford, the Bob Lutts Fulshear/Simonton Branch Library, and the Albert George Branch Library in Needville will be open for curbside service from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

helm, making back-to-back playoff appearances in the process. In 2020, the Hurricanes went 5-5 and made a regional quarterfinal playoff run that included the program’s first playoff win since 2013. “Being embraced by the Hightower family is one of the best things to happen to my coaching career. You guys embraced the process of being great, and knocked it out of the water,” Sam wrote. “Living and coaching here at Hightower was

an awesome experience that truly has grown me spiritually, physically and mentally.” According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Sam is returning to his roots in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. He graduated from Lancaster High School and previously served as Mansfield Legacy’s defensive coordinator for two seasons. In his note, Sam cited being closer to family in the DFW area as being a deciding factor in his decision. However, he reiterated his love for the Hightower community. “This was not an easy decision to come to, because when you’re invested and committed to being great on and off the field in every facet of life, it’s hard to let go,” he wrote. “… I want every single person in the program to know you’re a part of our family now.”

he picked it up at the age of 4, Veremjov called chess a game that has helped his son develop both as a player and a student in school. “This was a great idea, and as soon as I heard about it I signed him up,” he said. “I think this a great development of the mind with thinking strategically and taking responsibility for your own actions. From what I can tell, this game has influenced him in a very positive way.” Alexander Barraza said that Saturday’s tournament was his first competitive match of any kind. “Honestly, I just wanted to see how I would do,” the 22-year-old Houston resident said. “I’ve always wanted to play in this kind of setting.” Mary Borque was there

Saturday in support of a player who came all the way from Louisiana to compete, and said it was everything she could have asked for. “Everyone’s been so welcoming, and it’s such a beautiful spot. We’re just excited to spend the day here,” she said. In all, 80 players participated in Saturday’s event, according to Terrell. Considering the circumstances with the pandemic, she said the registered turnout exceeded all expectations city officials had for the tournament. Moving forward, she said the city plans to try making the event an annual occurrence for the community. “We definitely want to grow the tournament over time, but this is a great start,” she said.

The Hightower Hurricanes football team is looking for a new head coach. Joseph Sam confirmed on Twitter last Thursday that he has been hired as the head coach at Arlington Bowie. The news was first reported by Dave Campbell Texas Football’s Matt Stepp. “Hightower community, this is not goodbye, a but a ‘see you later,’ because you guys have a state championship to win,” Sam said in a note posted to his Twitter account Thursday. “I just hate I’ll have to be a spectator instead of the head coach. This decision was one of the toughest I’ve had to make as a man.” Hightower was 11-10 in Sam’s two seasons at the

★ CHESS FROM PAGE 1 safer environment outside to play chess,” she said. “This type of tournament hasn’t happened in a while, so it fills that gap for both chess players and the city.” It certainly appeared to do that for players both young and old, some of whom Terrell said came from as far as Louisiana to participate. Katy resident Vladimir Veremjov was out on Saturday supporting his 10-year-old son Mihail, who has been playing chess for six years and regularly played in The Chess Refinery’s tournaments before the pandemic. The game, he said, has become an outlet for his son through events such as Saturday’s tournament. Ever since

Clements baseball team hosting annual Hit-A-Thon By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

In a normal year, Clements High School’s annual Hit-A-Thon baseball fundraiser would be a drop in the bucket relative to the rest of its efforts. This season, however, is far from normal for many programs, and Clements is no different. So the 2021 edition of the Hit-A-Thon is coming at the most crucial time as the baseball program tries to ramp up fundraising and provide key facilities for its student-athletes. “We want them to be happy and have those benefits,” Clements parent volunteer Marcus Menough said. “It takes a lot of time and effort, but hopefully we can show our kids the benefit on the back side and they’ll appreciate it. It’s a big deal for them.” This Wednesday at 6 p.m., Clements will host its Hit-A-Thon at Frankie Field behind Mercer Stadium, at 2655 Cordes Dr. in Sugar Land. Not unlike other local programs, the school’s fundraising and upkeep efforts have taken a hit as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and February’s Winter Storm Uri. “Our biggest challenge is definitely trying to keep our facilities up to date to make sure they’re safe and usable for the kids,” said Menough, whose son, Jackson, is a junior on

The City of Sugar Land will give notice of the contract award within sixty (60) calendar days after the opening date and time.

the team. “Our facilities have really suffered through all of that. It’s been a tough ride for the program when it comes to those types of things.” Annually a popular fundraising event, proceeds from Hit-A-Thon will go directly toward new netting for the team’s batting cages as well as a new shed for maintenance equipment. A portion will also be set aside for a future cover for the batting cages at Frankie Field, which is where the team plays and practices. The goal is to raise $10,500 for the endeavor by the end of the Hit-AThon donation period on March 22. As of Tuesday, $9,215 had been raised. During the event, each player on the team will get 10 swings, and the longest distance will be recorded. Each player will have obtained pledges in advance, and each pledged amount will be multiplied by his longest hit. Community members can also donate directly at app.99 pledges.com/ f u n d /C l e m e n t s B a s e ball2021. “If anything goes more than a few weeks – let alone – months without maintenance and time, it becomes pretty difficult. … Everything is a constant need, and baseball is not a cheap sport,” Menough said, noting volunteers normally take months to spruce up the field up prior to the season. “It takes a lot of funding to get that done. … This

year is becoming even more important to try to recoup what we weren’t able to do with taking care of the facilities as well as building for the future.” Ever since the Rangers got a mid-game call last March that announced the rest of their 2020 season would be cancelled due to the pandemic, Menough said it has taken a toll on players as a limited number of practice fields in the city are available on a firstcome, first-served basis. However, he said it has also come with a silver lining. “They’ve had to become very innovative (with their workouts). I think the kids have learned that you can’t take anything for granted and take advantage of what you can,” Menough said. “It’s created different challenges and made us do things differently. We’re trying a bunch of different things to help support the kids. All of that helps them be proud of the program and really have ownership in their school.” The Rangers had a 79 overall record heading into play this week after winning three of their last four games. And if the community support continues – through Hit-A-Thon and beyond – Menough believes the future is bright. “They’re always proud of their school, but sports give an extra dimension of pride,” Menough said. “And as parents we try to facilitate that.”

Both busy and active mothers themselves, Tai and Mei wanted to use their talents to support other women-led small businesses. “Our market provides the platform for (local) makers to showcase and connect with people face to face,” Mei said. “Some of our makers only have online shops, so they don't get to see the audience face to face, really. So our market provides that opportunity for them.” Tai said Sugar Land’s diversity and rapid growth across a spectrum of socioeconomic backgrounds makes it an ideal location for Heart To Market to try to boost vendors whose products are geared to women

or family-oriented. “I feel like (Sugar Land is) actually a really good reflection of the environment we started with in the Heights,” Tai said. “There's great appreciation for lots of local stuff. I think it's fun to have an audience that reflects that as well.” Mei, a 2002 graduate of Kempner High School, said her mother still lives in Sugar Land. She’s marveled at the changes she’s seen every time she’s come back to visit, noting that Town Square had not been built when she was growing up. Tai said her background in marketing and social media, where she worked for a global fashion designer, complements that of her business partner’s graphic design expertise. (Mei) has the taste and the design and I put all the techni-

cal details in place,” Tai said. “We both sort of share running social media at this time. And we've had people help out with that from time to time as well. But for the most part, it's just the two of us. And we definitely lean on our backgrounds for a lot of what we do.” With future events planned across the Houston area, Tai and Mei hope they can continue to grow and inspire women and mothers far beyond Women’s History Month. They’ve both emphasized the importance of connecting with other entrepreneurs on a personal level and developing strong support networks. “When you become a mother, you see the world a little bit differently, and you see potential,” Tai said. “I think for a lot of women, it sparks this creative ability to want to

start their own business, or to take back some of those hobbies that they maybe had let go. Women are just incredibly powerful and can do so many things. And so we love to be able to support them through that and walk them through that process.” The market is free to attend and scheduled to take place from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 2728 at 16250 City Walk in Sugar Land. On March 26, a VIP Sip & Shop is set to run from 6-8 p.m. VIP tickets are $40 and include a custom Heart To Market tote bag filled with goodies from vendors, light bites and drinks, plus early access to all vendors. George Kovacik, a spokesperson for Memorial Hermann, said the hospital had planned to vaccinate 10,000 people on Sunday and Monday. Kovacik said there were 400 volunteers working at the event. A request to obtain the number of people who ended up being vaccinated at the drive-through clinic was not immediately granted. As of Monday, 74,688 people have been vaccinated at Fort Bend County facilities.

Review: Jambeto’s Bakery & Cafe FBWC awarded serving up sweet and savory treats housing subsidy ous boiled sweet beans and fruit is topped with a flourish of flan ice cream. It may be something of an acquired taste, but I would definitely order it again. While admittedly, beans and corn kernels are not something you find in most western dessert, and the texture of the shaved ice made it difficult to consume, it was certainly worth the effort and the patience to give each individual ingredient its time in the spotlight — a virtual Thanksgiving feast of a dessert and a world of flavor at your fingertips.

Recently, I scratched the surface of the Filipino food scene in Fort Bend County with a visit to popular fast food chain, Jollibee. To get a more complete and authentic experience, I sought out Jambeto’s Bakery & Cafe in Stafford. Jambeto’s is small, but cozy and roomy, with a laid-back vibe. It had plenty of natural light, and the only other customers dining in during my visit were a comfortable distance away. I kicked things off with a familiar favorite, the Pancit Palabok ($9.50). The Jambeto’s version of this Filipino classic features sauteéd rice noodles in pork sauce topped with cooked shrimp, hard-boiled eggs and chicharones. They also have a vegetarian rendition, a chicken and shrimp combo, and standalone chicken and shrimp palabok options. The textural variety was on-point with the Pancit Palabok, as the eggs, chicken, and shrimp were accompanied well

by the noodles and the pork sauce. The Spanish influence of Jambeto’s is undeniable, with a nice selection of beef and chicken empanadas ($1.45 each). For $1 extra per dozen, you can have them deep fried. For those with a sweet tooth, the Pan de Ube, braided loaf of bread with a sweet potato filling, and the Pan de Mongo,

filled with mongo (red mung bean), are each $3.99. Pan de Coco, Jambeto’s interpretation of traditional Pan de Sal, features a roasted coconut filling and sells for $3.99 for a pack of four. At long last, I was able to fulfill my wish of trying the coveted Halo-Halo ($5.95). This delightful mixture of shaved ice and milk with vari-

ment in time to build the new units. The new housing is intended for long-term stays and is designed to aid women who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder or have had a traumatic brain injury or other mental health issues. “When survivors and their children are ready to exit the emergency shelter and transition to independence, one of the chief factors that could cause them to return to their abuser is the inability to find an affordable place to live,” Goodell said. AHP funds must be used to benefit households with incomes at or below 80 percent of the median income for the area. According to U.S. Census data, the median income for Richmond between 2015-19 was $43,071. Greg Hettrick, first vice president and director of community investment at FHLB Dallas, said FHLB Dallas could award up to $750,000 per AHP project, and that FBWC plans to use $10,750 per unit. “The merits of the project are what drives whether somebody gets a grant or not,” Hettrick said.

The Fort Bend Women’s Center was awarded an Affordable Housing Program (AHP) subsidy of $236,500 from CommunityBank of Texas and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) on Feb. 9. The funding will cover a portion of a $3.8 million expansion of an apartment complex in Richmond, where 22 new units will be built near the existing 27 units at the 30-acre facility, where 24 families already live. Funds from the Dorothy B. and Joe C. Watkins estate donated in 2019 will also contribute to the project. FBWC’s mission is to help survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children find safety and selfsufficiency, according to its website. FBWC Executive Director Vita Goodell said despite a delay in fundraising due to the economic impact of the pandemic, she feels “very confident” that FBWC will have raised the funds necessary to cover the cost of the develop-
