Local chamber to host Stafford candidate forum
The Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office (FBCSO) said it would increase patrols in Asian-American neighborhoods during a news conference last Friday in which an assembly of local elected officials gathered to mourn the loss of eight victims killed in two shootings in Atlanta on March 16. The local officials condemned the violence

and expressed solidarity with the Asian-American community. Six of the eight victims
of the shootings, which occurred at two Atlanta-area spas roughly 30 miles apart, according to
a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, were women of Asian descent. “Those victims, they look like me,” Stafford Mayor Pro Tem Alice Chen said. “We’re all together here, against hate crimes (committed) against all races. This is the time to wake up. We all need to work together against (hate).” County Sheriff Eric Fagan said he had instructed patrol deputies to step up patrolling in Asian storefronts and
communities following the shootings in Georgia. “The Asian community is our community,” Fagan said. “It is our loved ones.” The Asian Americans Salute Frontline Heroes, an initiative of the Chinese Community Center in Houston, donated 250 meals to FBCSO officers during Winter Storm Uri last month, Fagan said. Special needs baseball league looking to form local team By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Fort Bend County residents with special needs and a love for baseball may get the opportunity to play for a local team as part of a league that caters to their abilities. Alternative Baseball, a Georgia-based nonprofit organization aimed at “helping those 15 years of age and older with autism and other disabilities to gain social and
physical skills for success in life on and off the diamond” is looking to field a team that serves Sugar Land and the surrounding communities. Alternative Baseball CEO and Commissioner Taylor Duncan said in an email that the league is searching for players as well as coaches, managers and volunteers in Fort Bend County, with the possibility of starting a team in the area. “In a lot of suburban and rural areas, there are no services for those to continue
Duncan
their path toward independence. Many travel to find the limited services which
may or may not be available to their specific needs,” Duncan wrote. “I started this organization to give others on the spectrum/special needs the opportunity to be accepted for who they are and to be encouraged to be the best they can be.” Duncan said he was diagnosed with autism at age 4 and had speech and anxiety issues. He played one full season of traditional baseball at age 12, according to Alternative Baseball’s website, before he was cut from
the team. “I wasn't able to participate in competitive sports due to the developmental delays, in addition to social stigma from those who think what one with autism can and cannot accomplish,” he said. So to help those who may have faced circumstances similar to his own childhood, Duncan founded Alternative Baseball in 2016.

Richmond's Jones named to national '40 under 40' list City of Richmond Economic Development Director Jerry Jones, who started with the city in November, was recently named a recipient of the 2021 Economic Development 40 Under 40 Award. The awards program is hosted by Jorgenson Consulting and Development Counsellors International (DCI), a New York-based integrated marketing firm that works with economic development and travel organizations around the globe.
An independent selection committee of six economic development professionals and site selection consultants picked the winners from more than 200 nominations. The awards look for “young leaders who have raised the bar in economic development: those who have brought innovation, creativity, high standards, strong character and a track record of success to their community and the profession,” according to DCI’s website. “I never think I do
enough, and I’m still not sure I’ve done enough (for something like this),” the 37-year-old Jones said with a laugh. “I knew someone had entered me into the nomination pool. I didn’t really think I would get it. I was just shocked.” Much of Jones’ daily responsibilities include project management and ensuring the financial feasibility for such projects. Local dance school puts new County adds vaccination spin on COVID-19 fundraising site at Fort Bend fairgrounds By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
A neighborhood dance school instructor is putting her best foot forward for COVID-19 relief. Cookie Joe's Dancin' School in Sugar Land will host Miss Cookie's Cartwheelathon at 2 p.m. Saturday at 1415 Hwy. 6. A news release from the school said Joe will aim to complete 100 cartwheels for charity during the event. The school annually hosted auctions and fairs to benefit local homeless shelters, according to the release, but those have been forced to shut down due to COVID-19. It's the natural way to donate, Joe said, by doing

what she always does. “I used to do cartwheels all the time when teaching … it was a celebration ritual when something good happened in class, but then I turned 60 and my hips began to fail after
four decades of dancing,” said Joe, who in her younger days trained with the late Patrick Swayze, a Houston native, according to the release. “I got both hips replaced within three months ... I was able to dance again. And I celebrated by doing cartwheels.” Pledged proceeds from Miss Cookie’s Cartwheelathon will go to charities supported by the Exchange Club of Sugar Land, according to the school. "Exchange Club has a history of figuring out a way to help people. Cookie just personifies it," Exchange Club president Paul Barnett said in a news release. Follow @FortBendStar

ADDRESSING MY PROBLEM FROM EVERY ANGLE “Local business owner and esthetician of DermaGlo SkinCare, Chanel Bermudez, constantly had pain. ‘My clients know I don’t just treat the face. I treat the back and other parts of the body too. Sometimes that can put me in some pretty awkward working positions. My neck is constantly bothering me and my back too. One of my clients told me about SLHC. I’ve seen a few chiropractors in the past, the first difference I noticed about SLHC is that they take Full Spine X-Rays. After starting treatment I felt improvements immediately! I’m able to see more clients a day then before and still feel good when I get home. I’m impressed about the Layering Approach to my treatment. Just like in my business the skin needs more than just sunscreen...my body needed more than just adjustments. I do spinal decompression, laser therapy and pressure wave therapy. They address my problems from every angle. It has changed everything!” - Chanel Bermudez

A note of gratitude to next generation of leaders I can still remember being an elementary school student and being excited to sit on a cold gymnasium f loor while a police officer or firefighter or another local community member came to visit my classmates and I for what we called “assemblies." While those days are growing increasingly distant, it was always a source of excitement, curiosity and interest for me. I loved to ask questions at these sorts of events, and usually they raised eyebrows or drew laughs from my peers. But I still believe in the mantra that there’s no such thing as a dumb question, and only an ignorant or impatient answer. Per-

haps that’s why I was so grateful for the opportunity to be part of Dulles Elementary School’s virtual career day. Unlike my live Microsoft Teams experience with Cornerstone Elementary School in January, I didn’t have the same level of classroom interaction. Nonetheless, after the power outages caused by Winter Storm Uri in February, which delayed
the submission process as we all scrambled to return to normalcy, I still wanted to put in the same level of energy and enthusiasm into my recorded responses so the students would know I was still interested in sharing my perspective and limited knowledge with them. I’m all for promoting media literacy because I believe it leads to a better grasp of civics and becoming a more engaged and productive citizen. While I didn’t get on a soapbox about that in my virtual sessions, I was happy to receive questions from Dulles students ranging from, “What is it like to write for the newspaper?” and,
“What area or subject matter do you cover/ write about?” to, “How do you fit tons of things on a big piece of paper with a small printer?” To be fair about the last one, I don’t think it ever occurred to me as a fourth-grader to ask what size printers my local newspapers used. Nonetheless, both experiences were wholesome and encouraging for me to see our next generations of writers, and it is humbling to imagine I might have played a small role in helping someone use their gifts to make an impact on a community they already know far more intimately than I,
just by virtue of having grown up here in Fort Bend County. But I know that being a student is an opportunity we all should cherish and strive to maintain throughout our lives. Especially for those of you who are parents of young children, please find safe ways for them to explore and create and discover your community and the world around them. I could not imagine the 10-year-old version of me being forced to do virtual learning as an elementary or middle school student. And while I respect the complicated decision-making process of all involved
in school closings and reopenings, I want to especially commend those families who have hung in there throughout this pandemic, and extend another heartfelt thank you to Fort Bend ISD, Cornerstone Elementary and Dulles Elementary for the invitation. I’m excited to see what your children will accomplish having built up this newfound tenacity and toughness living through a global health crisis, and I know we at the Fort Bend Star will be eager to cover our future community leaders as they progress through this next phase of their lives and academic careers.
H-E-B resumes ‘Quest for Texas Best’ contest By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
H-E-B, which has five area locations across Missouri City, Richmond and Sugar Land, has resumed its “H-E-B Quest for Texas Best” search. The annual contest samples food and beverage products from around the state to see which ones win the honor of being featured at all of the Texas grocery giant’s stores. H-E-B said suppliers and manufacturers who want to enter the contest must submit details about their products at heb.com/quest by April 7. Qualified participants will compete for a combined $70,000 in cash
prizes as well as the opportunity to feature their product on H-E-B shelves. “We have the opportunity to connect with even more Texas-based innovators each year, which helps us further curate rich and robust offerings for customers,” James Harris, H-E-B’s director of diversity, inclusion and supplier diversity, said in a news release.
Following the entry deadline, products will be narrowed down to a top 20 by H-E-B’s business development managers, and those products will be presented before a panel of judges Aug. 24-26 at the San Antonio Food Bank. H-E-B said products must not be available at any other large chain or retailer, and the vendors must be willing to sell exclusively to H-E-B. All products must also be packaged in Texas. The grand prizewinning product’s manufacturer will win $25,000, while first place will win $20,000. H-EB will award $15,000 to the second-place winner and $10,000 to the thirdplace winner.

Hightower also had a dis-
trict win against Marshall, winning 20-1 on March 16. Montie Cuba had four RBIs for the Lady Hurricanes, who are 3-5 on the season. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital garners national honor for maternity care By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, located at 17500 W. Grand Pkwy S., was among eight hospitals in the Memorial Hermann Health System recently named as “Best Maternity Care Hospitals” by Newsweek. This designation relies on data from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit organization that reports the quality and safety of healthcare facilities in the U.S., and was bestowed upon 217 hospitals across the country. “This recognition is a testament to the great

Reagan, vice president of Memorial Hermann's women’s and children’s service line. Among the criteria hospitals were judged for were maternity care efforts that included “strong quality improvement efforts to decrease early elective deliveries, episiotomy, cesarean delivery in low risk women, and newborn bilirubin screening prior to discharge,” according to a news release from the hospital system. Treatments for Cushings Disease
Cushing disease is a direct cause of an abnormally excessive growth by the body’s pituitary gland. The pituitary gland is located in the brain and is responsible for producing many hormones. Specifically with Cushings, there is too much production of a stress hormone called cortisol. A moderate amount of cortisol is normally released in the body as a response to stressful situations, but it is not released all of the time. Symptoms of Cushing include obesity in the waist, round face, and fatigue. If Cushing is caused by taking steroid medications such as glucocorticoids, symptoms should stop when the steroid is discontinued. In some cases, surgery may be necessary to help severe cases of this disorder when the brain is extensively involved. Some treatments are available to help reduce the amount of cortisol in the body. Mifepristone may help decrease the effects of cortisol on the blood sugars when taken for a short period of time. Ketoconazole is an antifungal medication that can reduce high levels of cortisol. 05-18-16 - Ed’s Pharmacy - 2 x 4.5

disabilities. “Our special needs kiddos are not often offered the same opportunities as other children – so getting them out and getting them moving around is so instrumental both physically and mentally,” she said. “They don’t always have the best group or circle of friends because people think they’re different. In reality, they want the same things as other kids. They want to be included, be with other friends and make friends.” Once the league gets
enough players, coaches, and volunteers to field a full local squad, Duncan said, the fun can begin. There is no set timetable or location for a Fort Bend County team, and Duncan said it typically takes about six months to put a full team together because some areas lack resources for those on the autism spectrum or with special needs. The league would follow traditional baseball rules such as using wood bats, allowing stolen bases and permitting batters to try to
reach base on dropped third strikes. Duncan said a Fort Bend team would also travel to other areas and play on traditional high school-sized fields against Alternative Baseball teams, depending on local COVID-19 protocols. The organization has teams in more than 30 states, according to Duncan. “Sometimes in sports, we’re going to have disappointments as well as great days – so it teaches us skills that we can take off the diamond as well,” Duncan said. Whether prospective players and coaches are baseball novices or have an established passion for the game, Duncan said they can benefit from Alternative Baseball and the life skills it helps to develop. “It’s the ultimate baseball experience (for those with special needs),” he said. “They’re encouraged to be the best they can be, and it instills the confidence needed for dreams in life on and off the diamond.”
Development District and St. John the Baptist Parish and as a District 3 City Councilman for the City of Alexandria. Louisiana. He has also served as the Project Manager for Central Louisiana Business Incubator and CEO for Lake Charles North Redevelopment Authority, among other positions. “The economic development industry is in good hands with these rising leaders,” said Todd Jorgenson, managing director and principal of Jorgenson Consulting, Inc. As Jones was hired in Richmond just a few months ago, the award is largely based on his work in Baton Rouge and his native Alexandria, Louisiana. And Jones said one of the most
rewarding moments of his time there happened at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic last spring. “We started having Zoom webinars and educating communities of North Baton Rouge,” he said. “We partnered with community stakeholders and leaders to start working with the mayor to provide gift cards, certificates and other things to help keep businesses and restaurants open.” During those next several months, he said 30 new businesses opened their doors amidst COVID-19, and that many are still open today. “It’s not about what happens to you – it’s how you respond to it,” he said. Jones said Richmond is
currently working on identifying how to increase its commercial development across the community and creating a cultural district. He said there is also an ongoing effort to better connect with the city’s business community and improve their marketing through avenues such as social media and (when possible) in-person meetings. “The thing I like is being able to see kids and families having the disposable income to purchase (things) because of the jobs available in the community,” he said. “It’s not about me, it’s about the community and them having the opportunity for a better life. … I have the greatest job in the world.”

Hope For Three has previously partnered with Clements High School’s soccer team for soccer clinics and other community members for golf clinics, according to Farmer, who said athletics provide a crucial outlet for those with autism and other

That’s the most critical portion to this job.” Jones previously served as Director of Economic Development for the Baton Rouge North Economic

Review: State Fare a marquee Sugar Land destination By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
One of the most Instagrammable restaurants in Sugar Land’s Town Square is also one of the best modern Southern spots in the area. State Fare Kitchen & Bar made its debut in Fort Bend County in July at 15930 City Walk, joining its sister location in West Houston. State Fare’s bright, clean aesthetic and giant marquee board with sassy quips that offer commentary on current events. There was, “Sure hope the Texas power grid can handle all businesses reopening at once,” and, “Never be afraid to cut people off ... ERCOT,” following Winter Storm Uri. More universally relatable and slightly dark humor includes, “I’m in a good place right now. Not emotionally, but this bar has good drinks.” The staff is friendly and attentive, and despite the peak weekday lunch rush, I was seated immediately, perhaps one of the perks of

the solo dining I’ve done as a restaurant critic during the COVID-19 pandemic. I waited no more than 15 minutes for my food, but
I enjoyed the ambiance of State Fare, a source of Southern comfort . The bright and airy interior is decked with red

Deco era as well as that of classic, 1950s-style diners and contemporary warehouse-style venues. I didn’t take long to figure out what I was craving and set my sights on the Purist Mac ‘n Cheese ($13). The menu claims the dish uses “double cheese” and toasted breadcrumbs, with the option to add “Gulf Trash” AKA shrimp, andouille sausage and crab for an extra $10. It was also sprinkled with chili pepper flakes. I’m a big fan of seafood with pasta, but I was a tad skeptical and had a brief moment of buyer’s remorse when I thought about the pairing of the protein with the mac and cheese. Thankfully, my fears did not materialize, and the andouille and the shrimp made for an impressive, flavorful bite with the cheesy noodles. If anything, I felt a bit shortchanged by the amount of crab in the dish, and would have liked to see how more of it would have added to the commingling aromas and tastes of the Purist Mac ‘n Cheese. All told, State Fare is a breath of fresh air, a cozy
space with some clever spins on American and Texan classics. Have you been to State Fare yet? What did I miss? Keep me posted about your own Fort Bend County dining adventures by emailing me at smodrich@fortbendstar.com or tweeting at me @StefanJModrich.com.
