Elkins High School senior Jaydan Kisinger can’t remember a time when she didn’t have some sort of art utensil in her hand. Her lifelong passion has helped Kisinger take the top honor in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s 2021 student art competition. The 18-yearold’s painting was named as “Grand Champion” last Sun-

day, after she was named a Class Reserve Champion in 2020. Kisinger’s piece entitled “Through the Years” was crowned out of more than 3,000 pieces of artwork initially submitted for pre-

liminary judging in January. The judges selected 712 pieces of artwork to advance to the next round of judging on Feb. 13, when 72 students were selected to participate in the School Art Auction. “I almost jumped out of my seat before running to the stage, I was just so excited and thrilled. It’s a dream come true, really,” Kisinger said. “I never expected this to happen. Going in, I just wanted to at least get into

Sherman Batiste wears many hats at Elkins High School. On Monday, he added another feather in his cap. Now in his fourth year working at the school, Batiste was named Fort Bend ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year. “I’m not your average teacher,” Batiste said. “If you picture the quintessential teacher in your mind, a picture of me may not pop up. However, I’m a representation of telling kids, “Yeah, teachers wear suits and ties, but they also wear jeans and Jordans.’ And they still do the same thing effectively. It’s just about being good enough at your craft and everything will take care of itself.” The New Orleans native was forced to flee to Texas after Hurricane Katrina in 2005, landing at Marshall High School, where he played football. He went on to attend Texas A&M Kingsville, where he played football and ran for the Javelinas’ track squad. Batiste said he is a proud

Fort Bend ISD is faced with the looming challenge of replacing outgoing Superintendent Charles Dupre, and voters served by the district are tasked with electing two new members to the FBISD Board of Trustees who will be expected to provide their input in hiring a new leader. Nine candidates vying for two seats on the board, Positions 2 and 6, addressed the public and the issues

facing the school district — including how the board is organized and whether or not it should employ taxpayer-funded lobbyists — last Wednesday during a virtual forum hosted by the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. Early voting is scheduled for April 19-27, and Election Day is May 1. One of the most contentious topics of the forum

came in the form of a question about single-member districts. The opportunity to teach and coach wide receivers for the Knights’ football team under his mentor and former Marshall coach, Dennis Brantley, and his best friend, Dean Brantley, the quarterback Batiste played alongside with the Buffalos, was a dream come true for the young college graduate. “(Dennis Brantley) believed in me as a kid,” Batiste said. “I didn’t believe I could (succeed) until somebody told me that I would, and that somebody was him.” Batiste said he wants to pass the baton to the next generation out of the gratitude he has for the mentors and leaders of his upbringing. “Oftentimes we put pressure on our kids to be somewhat perfect, or to fit

a certain (expectation),” Batiste said. “And you forget that they’re kids and sometimes they won’t get it right.” Batiste became the first FBISD employee to teach a personal finance class with the district, and he also teaches world history and physical education as well as courses within FBISD’s Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) college readiness program. “If you have a teacher who was a straight-A student or an honor roll student, they might not be able to see the potential in a kid that may be labeled as troubled or may not be a straight-A student, they may be a C student,” Batiste said. “I can see it because I was once that kid. You’ll walk past 400 people in the hallways and there are some people out there who literally don’t feel seen.” He has taught students in every secondary grade level at Elkins, and feels he is helping prepare them for success in the next phase of their lives. At age 30, he linked his youth and relatability to his ability to connect with his students. “It’s one thing to teach these kids math and science and history,” Batiste said. “When you look at financial literacy, you can make as much money as you want to in your life, but if you don’t know how to manage that

money, it’s all for naught.” He also has become an important facilitator of the social development of students who are learning to adapt to new and changing environments before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, just as he had to do to transition from Louisiana to Texas. “I’m the teacher that’s going to make them come out of their shell comfortably,” Batiste said. “I’m going to make them show their personality more and ultimately make them smile, because I want you to leave my classroom more well-rounded and better than when you came. You won’t be perfect when you leave my room, but you’ll be better than when you came, and that’s my motivation.” Batiste said he hopes to be a role model for Black students and inspire people of all backgrounds to become teachers to increase representation among the many different ethnic groups that call Fort Bend County home. “It doesn’t have to always be about athletics or just academics,” Batiste said. “We can be well-rounded at everything and successful at everything. And hopefully everybody who crosses Fort Bend ISD can have an experience with every color, every race, and every sex of teacher that there is.”

Managing Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is a condition where unexpected motion causes a disturbance to the inner ear. An uneasy feeling suddenly occurs causing a cold sweat, severe dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Many people who travel by plane, ship, or car may experience this. As soon as the body adjusts to the motion, the uneasy feeling slowly goes away. Certain antihistamines such as meclizine (antivert) or dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) can be taken about one hour before the motion sickness event is anticipated to help prevent nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. These medications cause severe sleepiness. A prescription patch called Scopolamine (Transderm Scop) can be placed behind the ear; the patch sends medication through the skin behind the ear to help reduce the symptoms of motion sickness for up to seventytwo hours. This can cause drownisess, dry mouth, and blurry vision. People with glaucoma or difficulty with urination need to speak to a doctor before starting this patch.

Be change you wish to see this election cycle If you’re weary about election fatigue after the first quarter of 2021 and the slog of a year that was 2020, you’re not alone. While COVID-19 cases continue to plummet as the number of shots in arms increases, there is still plenty of anxiety as we look to get over the hump and out of the woods for good. But beyond that, there’s been a lot going on this spring that we’ve been following since before the start of the new year. For those of you who value local control and having a say and a direct impact in choosing who will participate in meetings as an elected official at your city council or school board meetings,

this is your time to shine. Missouri City voters have a series of ballot propositions to decide on, including a potential increase of term lengths from two years to four and whether to place a limit of three consecutive terms. It’s not my place to sway you to vote for specific policy positions, though our election coverage breaks down the most

important issues facing Fort Bend ISD voters. We previously covered the Stafford MSD field of candidates and Stafford City Council race. The other day, I had an engaging and thoughtful conversation with Sherman Batiste, an Elkins High School teacher who was recently awarded by Fort Bend ISD as its Secondary Teacher of the Year. We reported that good news on the front of this week’s paper. I would only add that Batiste, a Louisiana transplant-turned Marshall graduate who overcame the trauma of fleeing New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and also cleaned up his act after being suspended from

school, is a great example of the type of teacher we should empower in all of our local schools. Our systems should be optimized in the best way to make it most effective for them to do their jobs Batiste repeated the famous Mahathma Gandhi saying, “Be the change you want to see in the world,” as one of the driving forces that helped him turn around his life. And he comes to work feeling so grateful for the opportunities he has to educate and coach on the Elkins Knights football team that sometimes, it doesn’t feel like work to him. This is the spirit of public service at its best,

whether it comes from an elected official or not. And over the course of listening to our candidates engage in constructive, civil and thoughtful discussions about the future of the entities they govern and how to work with the many stakeholders they serve to solve incredibly difficult challenges, it gave me a sense of renewed optimism Based on the responses given most often by candidates, those running for office seem to think that people with a variety of backgrounds and skillsets to solve problems like the COVID-19 pandemic and economic disruption, and a penchant for innova-

tion, have what it takes to succeed in the roles they hope to attain. And it seems, too, that many of you voters who have been listening and watching attentively have been eager to weigh in on topics that are of great interest to you, your children, your friends and your neighbors. You can make your voice heard during the early voting period from April 19-27 or on Election Day, which is May 1. But we also will be looking to continue connecting with you. A Richmond home healthcare owner has been arrested and charged with making false statements in an attempt to defraud Medicare, according to a Monday news release from the United States Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ said 60-yearold Paul Njoku was scheduled to make his first court appearance on Monday afternoon. The five-count indictment against Njoku alleges that he made false statements relating to healthcare matters by copying and pasting doctor and nurse signatures onto patient paperwork. According to the DOJ, Njoku owned and operated Opnet Healthcare Services Inc., doing business as P&P Healthcare Services. The DOJ said

Baseball Logan Abadie, Joseph Binder, Jacob Binder and Kopeland Jones had multiple hits for the Elkins Knights in their 6-3 win over Austin on April 7, with Jacob Binder’s three hits leading the way and Joseph Binder driving in two runs. Abadie also had two hits and two RBIs for the Knights (12-7-1, 6-2) in a 54 win over George Ranch on April 9. Logan Witt had two hits for Austin in the aforementioned loss to Elkins on April 9. The Marshall Buffalos picked up their first two wins of the season last week, beating Hightower 6-4 on April 7 and taking down Willowridge 16-4 on April 10. The Hurricanes rebounded from that loss to Marshall with a 9-2 win in the April 9 rematch.

A. Appointments and qualifications: The council by majority vote of the entire council shall appoint a city manager who shall be the chief administrative and executive officer of the city. The method of selection shall be left to the discretion of the city council so long as the method insures orderly, nonpartisan action toward securing a competent and qualified person to fill the position. The city manager shall be chosen solely upon the basis of his executive and administrative training, experience and ability and need not when appointed be a resident of the City of Missouri City; however, during the tenure of his office he shall reside within the city. The council may enter into an employment contract with the selected city manager that prescribes the conditions of employment as the council determines appropriate. Such contract shall be authorized by a majority of the entire council. B.

EXHIBIT “A” CHARTER PROPOSITION A

Compensation. The city manager shall receive compensation as may be set by the council according to his experience, education and training. If the council elects to enter into an employment contract with the selected city manager, the selected city manager shall receive such compensation as shall be affixed by the council in such employment contract. The compensation shall be agreed upon before appointment with the understanding that the council may change it at their discretion.

The mayor shall be the official head of the city government and act as chief administrative officer of the city and fulfill all duties of city manager until a city manager is appointed. He shall be the chairman and shall preside at all meetings of the city council. The mayor shall vote upon all matters before the city council except when the matter involves the consideration of his own official conduct or where his financial interest is involved. He shall see that all ordinances, bylaws, motions and resolutions of the council are faithfully obeyed and enforced. He shall sign all ordinances and resolutions; and when authorized by the council, he shall sign all official documents, such as conveyances, grant agreements, official plats of city property, contracts and bonds. He shall appoint special committees as he deems advisable and also those special committees as instructed by the council. He shall perform such other duties consistent with the Charter or as may be imposed upon him by the city council. The mayor pro tem shall be a councilmember and shall be elected by the council at the first regular council meeting following the later of each general city election or special city election for the election of the mayor or one or more councilmembers. The councilmember elected as the mayor pro tem shall hold the title and serve in such capacity at the pleasure of the council. His teacher said she is impressed by his selflessness and rapid progress “He’s really generous with his time and is kind of taking his drawing to the next

them happy? cially during a pandemic,” said Tonya Yurgensen-Jacks of the rodeo’s Trailblazer Committee, which picked the essay winners. “The talent, creativity and tenacity that these young Texans displayed was not just encouraging, but truly heartwarming.” Evolution of passion Kisinger’s 2021 rodeo artwork featured art teacher Ryan Morales at his ranch in Rosenberg with one of his horses. To get the photo she recreated, she said Morales and her family drove out to Morales’ ranch, where she eventually whittled down the winner out of more than 800 that she took.

After coming up short last year, she said her competitive nature took over once she had her canvas. “There’s nothing in particular that inspired me, but what motivated me was my competitiveness in my heart. The people around me supported me and were looking forward to my success,” she said. “In a way, I wanted to live up to the standards they had for me – not because I’m pressured to, but because they all have special places in my heart and I wanted to make them proud.” Though she has had a lifelong passion for art, Kisinger said it wasn’t until middle school that she began con-

sidering pursuing it as more than a hobby. The passion became even more real, she said, as she moved from anime and other forms of “unrealistic” art to what she called a more sophisticated style upon reaching high school. She also said 2020 was the first time she had entered her art into the Houston rodeo’s annual competition. “I had always done it for fun, but I made a friend with this girl who was into art and was pretty good at it. That’s probably the first time I felt that competitive flame in my chest,” she said. “I thought, ‘She’s so good – but I want to be better.’ So we just com-

One of Heyliger’s five challengers, Kristin Davison Malone, said she is opposed to single-member districts because they would cause division during a time when the district needs to be united. “If the board is doing their job and they’re representing all children, or all stakeholders, that’s what we’re interested in,” Malone said. “Make sure when you’re voting that you choose someone that genuinely cares about the entire district. Because when it comes to our kids we shouldn’t be playing politics.” The other candidates for Position 6 are Stephanie Brown, Allison Drew, Rafat Ulain Jilani and Edtrina Moss. The candidates for Position 2 are Ashish Agrawal, Rehan Ahmed, Judy Dae and Nadeem Naik. Incumbent Grayle James announced her intent to retire and not to run for reelection on Jan. 4. I was partial to the Hughie and the Eric, each of which were both substantial and yet well-proportioned, ensuring enjoyable bites from start to finish. Soliz has several lunch plates that are available starting at 10:30 a.m., including enchiladas ($7.50) and a combination plate ($8.50) with a beef taco, beef tostada, guacamole and chili con queso. Any authentic Mexican restaurant carries with it the expectation of barbacoa and menudo, which Soliz serves on Fridays and Saturdays. Barbacoa is $12 per pound at Soliz and includes six corn tortillas and salsa, and $7 gets you a half a pound and three corn tortillas and salsa. Menudo is $7.50 and comes with two tortillas, onion and lemon.

You can rack up a lot of mileage discovering some of the finest restaurants in Fort Bend County, but sometimes, the best food is right under your nose. A stretch of Dulles Avenue south of Highway 90 has become one of my favorite spots for a reliable and affordable bite to eat, in part for its proximity to our Stafford office, but also because it is a microcosm of the city’s great culinary heritage. Soliz Casa de Tacos has been a pillar of that heritage under the operation of owner Eric Otto. His grandmother opened Soliz in 1984, and the menu has several items that are named after longtime customers. Texans love their breakfast tacos, and they are served all day at Soliz. I was one of several customers who rushed to get their taco fix before the restaurant closed for the day, arriving to a mostly full parking lot. I tried four different tacos, including the owner’s name-
