What’s in a name? Apparently for Fort Bend County it’s more fiction than fact. The structure that the county’s name was derived from wasn’t a fort at all, but rather an over-glorified storage shed. It was a two-room dog run cabin built in haste and used to store goods of early settlers who were lost. “The ‘fort’ was built by members of Stephen F. Austin’s first set of colonists to Texas and a few others they met along the way,” said Chris Godbold, chief curator of collections for the Fort Bend History Association. “Austin created two traveling parties to settle in Texas. One of the parties traveled over land and the other went by boat, the Lively, from New Orleans. Eventually the Lively landed at the mouth of the Brazos and unloaded all of the settlers and their provisions, expecting to meet up with Stephen F. Austin. However, he wasn’t there, as they had actually agreed to meet at the Colorado River.” It is not known for certain how they ended up on the Brazos rather than the Colorado, though navigational error is a good probability. According to Paul N. Spellman in his book “Old 300 Gone to Texas,” The Lively’s captain, Ebenezer Cannon of Massachusetts, was described as “in the neighborhood of 50 years old, about 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, quite fleshy, weighing about 160, of a florid complexion, fond of his toddy, and quite on the lethargic order.” The 30-ton schooner Lively sailed from New Orleans on Nov. 23, 1821, with 27 passengers and crew. They endured a hellish six-week trip before disembarking and unloading at the mouth of the Brazos. Little is known about what happened to the Lively after it left the settlers on Jan. 3, 1822, but four months later it sank on Galveston Island during its second voyage out of New Orleans. As for the colonists, they planned to meet up with Austin upriver and find their land allocations. “After waiting for him awhile attempts were made to go upriver to search for Austin,” Godbold said. “Not finding him, they eventually chose to find a place to settle anyway. They chose a place where there was a break in the timber near a big bend and a creek running into the river. Here, on the west side of the river, they built a log cabin where the settlers could store their supplies and take shelter should Indians attack. It was called a fort though it really wasn’t one. Eventually joining them there was a woman they had encountered on their journey who would become known as the “mother of Texas,” Jane Long. According to an entry on Wikipedia, the closest the fort came to any military action was during the Texas Revolution in 1836. “The Fort Bend crossing was briefly defended in April 1836 by a rear guard detachment led by Wiley Martin. It started with the musings of a high school teacher who dreamed about creating affordable housing if she won the lottery. Then Valerie Tolman realized that some people would already consider her rich, so first she approached her husband, Davis, with an idea. That was 16 years ago. In April, three Hightower High School seniors learned they are joining the ranks of 48 students – all the firsts in their families to attend college – who will get a full scholarship to the school of their choice thanks to the Fort Bend County couple, the Thoreau campus of the Unitarian Universalist church, and a Jewish church visitor who wanted to make a difference. “We were already putting our son through college and he was done. I wondered if we could keep it up; why not send someone else to college,” Tolman said. That was in 2002 and she thought it was fun. “So I came to Hightower and said I wanted to start a scholarship for kids who started out not doing well and are now doing better. I was really attached to those kids,” said Tolman, who was teaching journalism at the school. That first year they received four application letters from students – which was more than she and her husband could afford. “We still had kids at

She attends the Thoreau campus of the First Unitarian Universalist church in Stafford. We raised enough money from the congregation to send
one and we’d committed to one. Now every year the church raises money and the man still sponsors two students. It’s a lot of money,” said Tolman. She looked at the three students seated before her in a Hightower High School classroom listening to the scholarship history, leaned forward saying, “but you all don’t have to worry about that.” Syeda Tayyaba, 17, and Jasmin Gil, 18, will attend college studying the health

‘Escape Artist’ is non-stop, heart-pounding escapism By Joe Southern
Book Review
JSOUTHERN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Leave it to Brad Meltzer to make characters of some of the most nondescript professions imaginable and turn them into action heroes. In his latest thriller, “The Escape Artist,” Meltzer’s protagonist is an Army mortician. Meltzer’s best-known trilogy of thrillers is based on an archivist. All of his novels explore the most obscure nooks and crannies of government operations. They take you to places you didn’t know existed with professions no one has ever aspired to and reveal minutely colossal details that can change the world. “The Escape Artist” is Meltzer’s 12th thriller (he has a line of children’s books, non-fiction books, and also writes comics). The story is about Jim “Zig” Zigarowski, a civilian mortician who works on the military’s most important cases at Dover Air Force Base. When a plane leaving a top-secret military base in Alaska crashes after takeoff, the bodies are sent to Dover. Among them is a young woman named Nola Brown. Nola is a childhood friend of Zig’s daughter and once saved her life. When Zig opens the casket, he is quick to realize that the dead woman is not Nola. He also discovers a hastily written note to Nola inside the woman’s stomach. Zig quickly deduces that Nola is alive, on the run, and in great

Got Back Pain? Do you have back or neck pain that is keeping you from enjoying activities with your family and friends? It is springtime in Houston and our weather is perfect for getting out and about. Now is the right time to do something about your pain.
Author Brad Meltzer signs books at Murder By The Book in Houston two years ago. danger. He is determined to find her and to repay a huge debt to her. The more Zig digs into the case, however, the deeper and more tangled the mysteries become. In typical Meltzer fashion, the story is multi layered and plays out with numerous characters with hidden agendas and loyalties that seem to turn with every twist of the plot. The story alternates between present day and Nola’s past, retelling her brutal childhood and her blossoming talent as an artist. Nola holds the distinguished position as the U.S. Army’s artist-in-residence. Shipped to some of the world’s ugliest hot spots to paint the horrors of war, she becomes as troublesome and unpredictable

as the scenes she captures on canvas. But there’s more to her than that, much more. There is also the layer of government agents who are covering up her supposed death while also hunting her down. Key high-level officials falsified her death and replaced hers with another body. Who and why? The answers spread to the highest levels of government and to some of the lowest. They also reach to history’s greatest escape artist – Harry Houdini. If you enjoy thrillers, mysteries, documentaries, and histories, this book has them all and leads you on a nonstop, page-turning thrill ride that you just can’t put down.

Chronic back or neck pain can lead to many problems. Specifically, spinal compression. This is where pressure is placed on the spinal cord. It can develop anywhere in the lumbar, thoracic, or cervical spine. Symptoms can range from a mild discomfort to a severe pain. Weakness, numbness, tingling, and pain in the legs are such symptoms. There is a conservative treatment, spinal decompression, that is an option for chronic back and neck pain. This is a nonsurgical treatment that is a traction-based procedure performed on a specifically designed table that gently relaxes and stretches your spine. How does it work? There are vertebral discs, which are the shock absorbers in your spine, that provide stability and mobility. If there is a bulge or herniated disc, pressure on the spinal cord can cause pain, numbness, instability, and reduced mobility. With spinal decompression, the patient will lie on a special table that places negative pressure on the affected area of the spine. Once the injured area is identified, the spine is massaged and gently stretched. This will help relieve the disc pressure and allow it to retract naturally. This process can allow a bulging disc to return to its natural position and reduce stress on the spinal canal. What are the benefits of spinal decompression? It is a safe and painless alternative to ineffective physical therapies, pain medications, and expensive surgeries. Decompression therapy can provide long lasting pain relief by removing pressure from the spinal canal and pinched nerves. It can stimulate natural disc activity allowing blood and nutrients to flow normally through the spine. Spinal decompression is a natural healing process that can restore mobility and stability to the spine and can help regenerate discs. At Texas Regional Health & Wellness, we are ready to help you get pain free and out and about with your loved ones. We provide spinal decompression therapy as an alternative treatment because your quality of life is important to us. For the month of April, come in for x-rays, exam and 1 decompression session for only $99 (worth $250).* *Offer is for new patients only and not to be combined with insurance and or Medicare recipients.

Funeral museum pays tribute to Roy Rogers with car, clothing display By Joe Southern
gift to him from his dear friend Nudie Cohn and was a treasured artifact in the Roy Rogers Museum in Branson, Mo. Unfortunately, the museum has since closed, and therefore I am most honored to be able to have on display an artifact that was so dear to the iconic cowboy Roy Rogers,” Keeney said. The car is owned by museum board member Buck Kemphausen, whose replica of the 1966 Batmobile was on display last year. The car isn’t the only thing in the exhibit, but it is a rolling exhibit in itself. The interior is lined with hand-tooled leather. The dash, doors and other parts are encrusted with silver dollars. There is a black saddle between the bucket seats, decorated with rhinestones and more silver dollars. The door handles and gear shifter are all pistols, and all kinds of pistols and rifles decorate the car. Many of the knobs

are on loan from Rogers’ son, Roy “Dusty” Rogers Jr. Although the exhibit is a tribute to Roy Rogers, it’s just as much a tribute to Nudie Cohn, who designed some of the most flamboyant and recognizable outfits from the 1950s through the 1970s, including some for Elvis Presley, Elton John, John Lennon, John Wayne, Clayton Moore (The Lone Ranger), Gene Autry, Cher, President Ronald Reagan, George Jones, Porter Wagoner, Glen Campbell, and scores of others. The car he made for Rogers wasn’t the only one. Cohn customized 18 automobiles between 1950 and 1975 – mostly white Pontiac Bonneville convertibles. They were nicknamed “Nudie Mobiles,” and the nine surviving cars – including the one at the museum – have become valued collector’s items. Cohn died in 1984 at the age of 81. Rogers was born Leonard Franklin Slye on Nov. 5, 1911. He died July 6, 1998. “This special exhibit gives visitors an opportunity to learn a bit about Roy Rogers, who was an American cowboy,” Keeney said. “Many visitors will remember turning on the television to watch his iconic show in the ’50s. Texas is known for its cowboys and I find nothing more fitting than paying a tribute to Roy Rogers on the 20th anniversary of his death.” The National Museum of Funeral History is located at 415 Barren Springs Dr., Houston, and is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.nmfh.org.

Finding the Fort Bend of Fort Bend County not an easy task It’s been said that a man’s home is his castle. In the case of Fort Bend County, you might call it a fort. The long vanished wooden structure that settlers called a fort was nothing more than a two-room cabin that was built as a storage shed. It was never designed to be a fort and would have been very inadequate to the task had it been needed for that purpose. Fortunately, it never was. The structure did serve a purpose – primarily to store construction materials and provisions while some of Stephen F. Austin’s original colonists built their settlement near present-day Richmond. Other than that, it was a deteriorating marker on the path of progress as Texas won its independence from Mexico and eventually became part of the United States. No one seems to know exactly where it stood or when its last remnants were swept away in the Brazos River but there is a historical marker near the spot where it is believed to have been. Just south of the marker on the west bank of the river near where Front and Fort streets are in Rich-

mond sits a collection of rusted old mobile homes, thick brush and a landscape littered with junk. It’s hardly a fitting sight for the historic location of the humble building that was important enough to name a county after, but that’s where it supposedly was. If there is one thing I have learned while studying Texas history is that many of the people and things that made this state great were true underdogs. Some of the heroes of old such as Sam Houston, Jim Bowie, and William Travis were has-beens running from their past and trying to forge a future in a new land. The ragtag band of rebels that called themselves an army defeated one of the biggest and best-trained armies of its time. And a hastily constructed wood cabin became a fort for which this county was named.
As I have visited historic sites in Texas the past few years I have been both impressed and bemused by the degree of historic preservation in this state. The state’s most iconic and revered historical treasure – the Alamo – is in a sad state. I’m not talking about the church most of us know as the Alamo, but the rest of the compound that is long gone and paved over. Many of us cheered when George P. Bush campaigned for Land Commissioner on a promise to save the Alamo and restore the hallowed grounds. Today, many of us vilify him for his plan to “re-imagine” the Alamo, not by rebuilding its stone walls, but outlining the compound with glass panels. If you ask me, the Alamo should be rebuilt like Presidio La Bahia in Goliad. Part of “Fort Defiance” is original, but much of it is reconstructed to look like it did when Col. James Fannin and his troops were slaughtered there in the Goliad Massacre. It’s a prime example of historic restoration and preservation at its finest. Closer to home, San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site will open a new museum on

thing.) Then Mike Stone turned the podium over to a City Of Sugar Land engineer, and Mr. Stone said to him, “OK Jorge, get up here and tell us why it’s not your fault.” (Mike Stone has already told me by email, and I quote, “Drainage in your neighborhood, streets, gutters, storm sewer, slab elevations etc. are all the responsibility of the City not the levee district.”) So, at that point I was thinking, “come on City of Sugar Land, I want to hear something juicy”. But, when the City of Sugar Land engineer took the podium I couldn’t understand him at all, so I left (no offence, but what’s the point? This process is already a pain in the #*@ without other problems). And, of course, no one is actually going to take the blame and open the door for lawyers and all that nasty stuff. (I must have lost touch with reality for a moment.) Bottom Line: I’ll just wait and see what goes down. We’ll either remain screwed or someone will get it right (eventually, hopefully they’ll get it right before I go to the big retention pond in the sky). and restore some of our history? Wouldn’t it be great to buy up the dilapidated properties where the fort once stood, create a historic park and make a new replica of the fort there? You wouldn’t need millions of dollars to do it. Another idea would be to make a “Santa Anna trail” that follows the route the Mexican dictator and his army took through this area, culminating at another historic park at the area where Thompson’s Ferry once was. These would be relatively small investments with big local impact. If there is one thing the Richmond/Rosenberg area is sorely lacking is good hiking and biking trails. This would help meet an outdoor/fitness need as well as a historical one. Who knows, maybe this is just a pipe dream, or maybe not. I can only hope this will plant a seed that will germinate and blossom into something wonderful for our area. A very unique chapter of Texas, American, and Mexican history happened here. I just seems logical to me that we would capitalize on that so that future generations and visit and appreciate their past.

Still not happy with flood response ing Mr. Stone attempted humor, but well, this topic just isn’t funny at all (After all, who was at the meeting? Well, I repeat, it was unlucky flood victims who totally got the shaft). Mr. Stone said, “we learned some things that we didn’t know” (I truly believe that). Mr. Stone said, “until Harvey we didn’t know how low some of the house elevations were.” (As I’ve said, a previous storm event two years before Harvey, which only lasted a few hours, brought water to within one inch of being in my house. That should have been a clue. You guys frustrate me sometimes.) Mr. Stone also told us another big pump will be installed for LID2. (My thought would be: my neighborhood of Chimneystone is on the far side of the levee district from that new pump, so it almost sounded moot from my point of view.) At one point in this meeting, it was mentioned that my neighborhood was annexed and they didn’t know how low some of the houses were. (Why not? Isn’t that what city and levee engineers are supposed to know? In my neighborhood we generally believe that we were annexed for revenue. It almost looks like they didn’t really study any-
and landing used by Santa Anna and his army to cross the Brazos. I spent part of Thursday in Richmond looking at historical markers and buildings and coming away feeling like there is a lot of lost opportunity there. The area is rich in history but does a poor job of preserving and promoting it. I don’t mean this as a slight against the Fort Bend History Association or any historical preservation organizations – as nonprofit volunteer groups they are limited in what they can do. Mine is just the observation of a Johnny-come-lately who has seen the success of other historic sites across the country. For whatever it’s worth, I see a great opportunity here to capitalize on historic tourism. The whole region inside the big bend in the Brazos on the north end of Richmond has recently been designated as an Opportunity Zone. That means the government is providing tax incentives for economic investment in the very area I’ve been talking about here. Before the bulldozers come and plow under more history for the sake of progress, why don’t we take advantage of this

Letter to the Editor Dear City Of Sugar Land, I finally attended a “flood victim” meeting at the “Grand Palace of Sugar Land” (multi-million dollar City Hall, “9th wonder of the world”) on April 4, 2018. I chuckled with my neighbor as we agreed “the other meetings weren’t in the palace, I guess they’re trying to put on a show tonight.” Mike Stone (manager of Levee Improvement District 2, LID2) spoke first. He launched into the “Hurricane Harvey dog and pony show,” re-enforcing how apocalyptic the event was (wow, I haven’t heard or seen that presentation before, just joking, we’ve received many glossy full color mailers with this exact story from LID2 and the city, printed all fancy on “public relations” quality paper). For future reference, we’ve heard about Harvey, we were there (right?). So, all you guys need to do is say “it rained a whole bunch,” then get on to the meat and potatoes. Yes, we know the “storm track” by heart (meetings hosted by desk jockeys waste so much time). But then, we totally know they’re pounding home their message of: “nothing was our fault, we’re on top of this, we’ll say it over and over again until you believe it.” Occasionally, during this “targeted audience” meet-
April 27. The site has also been the focus of archaeological digs to find remnants of original structures that were burned down by fleeing colonists during the Runaway Scrape. It’s been a slow process, but I applaud the work that is being done there to bring that part of history back to life. Here in Fort Bend County, historical preservation has been a hodgepodge of successes and failures. One of the things that jumped out at me was the lack of information about the “fort” that the county was named after. As I began my research for the story on the front page of this week’s paper, I found it very difficult to find any information about it. I can’t thank Chris Godbold, chief curator of collections for the Fort Bend History Association, and Paul N. Spellman, author of the book “Old 300 Gone to Texas,” enough for their help with the story. Even with their help, information was scarce. Godbold told me that at one time there was a replica of Fort Bend, but it, like the original, is long gone and forgotten. Likewise, so is Thompson’s Ferry, the raft

one and we’d committed to one.

For the month of April, come in for x-rays, exam and 1 decompression session for only $99 (worth $250).* *Offer is for new patients only and not to be combined with insurance and or Medicare recipients.

gift to him from his dear friend Nudie Cohn and was a treasured artifact in the Roy Rogers Museum in Branson, Mo.

From now until the end of the year the museum will be displaying the 1963 Pontiac Bonneville convertible once owned by Rogers and his wife Dale Evans, among other items. “Those who love all things Western – its history, music, movies, television shows and especially cowboys who inspired us – will love this exhibit,” said Genevieve Keeney, president and chief operating officer of the museum. The garishly tricked-out car was given to Rogers by noted fashion designer Nudie Cohn. “His vehicle on display was a

The car’s exterior is decorated with rifles and pistols and has a fancy set of Texas longhorns on the front grille. Standing right behind the car is a mannequin of Rogers wearing one of his iconic Nudie outfits and cowboy hat. are on loan from Rogers’ son, Roy “Dusty” Rogers Jr.
