A Fort Bend County man convicted of sexually abusing two young children likely will die in prison. Richmond resident Eddie Ray Charles, 52, was sentenced to 75 years in prison, according to the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s office.
A news release from the DA’s office said Charles was charged with continuous sexual abuse of a young child or children and found guilty by a Fort Bend County jury April 26. He was sentenced July 15 and will not be eligible for parole. Fort Bend County assistant district attorneys Melissa Muñoz and Laurel
Ellisor said evidence revealed Charles engaged in sexual contact with one of the children in 2013, and also engaged in various types of sexual contact with the second child between 2007 and 2012. A third victim, abused in 1990, also testified against Charles. “Often children do not tell right away, and may

even deny when asked if they have been sexually abused. They may be scared of splitting up a family or losing a family member,” Ellisor said. “In this case, one of the two children who testified had bravely reported the abuse to a teacher and authorities

Fort Bend ISD announces plan to return ‘Sugar Land 95’ to rest From Staff Reports
The human remains discovered at an abandoned cemetery in Fort Bend County last year will be returned to their original resting place, according to a plan announced Thursday by Fort Bend ISD. The school district said the 95 African Americans whose remains were unearthed during construction of its James Reese Career and Technical Center will be reinterned at the same site. Congressman Olson will not seek re-election By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
U.S. Rep. Pete Olson has served his country and his county. Now he says it is time for a new phase in his life, which signals the end of a political era in Fort Bend County. Olson, a 56-year-old Sugar Land resident who since 2008 has served Texas’ 22nd Congressional District — which includes Fort Bend County — an-
nounced last week that he will not seek re-election when his sixth term is up. Olson, a Republican, said the impetus behind the decision is a desire to spend more time with his family. “It has been a privilege and an honor to represent the people of the 22ndDistrict of Texas for the past decade in Congress,” Olson said in a statement released July 25. “For six terms, the voters of our district have placed their faith in me to represent their concerns in the
House of Representatives. The time I have spent working with them and for them has been a tremendous blessing.” Olson’s announcement elicited reaction from both constituents and potential successors. Among those who weighed in was Sri Preston Kulkarni, a Democrat who narrowly lost to Olson in 2018. "It's no secret that Congressman Olson and I disagree on the fundamental issues facing our community, but I join with
the people of Texas’ 22nd District to thank him for his service, and I wish him the best in retirement,” Kulkarni said in a statement released July 25. "We have an opportunity to heal the division in this country, to tear down the walls separating Democrats, Republicans, and independents. Make no mistake, the contest ahead won't be easy - but the fights worth fighting never are.” Added Democratic candidate Derrick Reed: “I
want to thank Pete Olson for his service in uniform and in Congress. His work on behalf of the district, while not always in line with my views and those of the changing demographic, is appreciated nonetheless.” Nyanza Moore, an attorney, is another Democrat who has announced she is seeking the seat. Area support group prioritizes dementia caretakers By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Terry Cummings, Kim Galloway and Sondra Wiedenfeld have experienced firsthand the effects of providing care to family members with dementia. They all have channeled those experiences into the Richmond-Rosenberg Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group, which is dedicated to providing tools and advice for those taking care of a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia. With the number of people suffering from the disease rising rapidly, Faith United Methodist Church and St. John's United Methodist churches in Richmond had a joint vision spawned from a series of community meetings
on senior issues in 2013. They wanted to offer support in conjunction with the Alzheimer's Association to caregivers, family and friends in Richmond, Rosenberg and the surrounding areas. The group’s meetings, held the first Thursday of every month at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Richmond, began in October 2014. “We all have a heart and a passion for this, because we want people to know where to come to get help,” Galloway said. “You can tell when they walk in that some of them are physically and emotionally drained, and these meetings can give them that little spark they need.” According to a report from the Alzheimer’s Association, there are 5.8 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, while
at least 16 million caretakers provide unpaid care for their loved ones. In Texas, more than 380,000 people live with Alzheimer’s disease, while nearly 1.4 million family and friends provide care. In that vein, Cummings, Galloway, Wiedenfeld and another facilitator are partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association to offer a shoulder to lean on in their slice of Fort Bend County, especially considering many caretakers are spouses or loved ones who are in unfamiliar territory in knowing how to care for patients. “We want (caretakers) to know they’re valued and they’re not alone,” Wiedenfeld said. “We hope we’re breaking that barrier down so they can ask for help. Some of them think From left to right: Richmond-Rosenberg Alzheimer's Caregiver Support Group facilita-

they’re the only one.” With personal perspectives from different points of the journey such as their own, Galloway said the group strives to provide an encouraging environment conducive to sharing experiences and learning about available resources, the disease and advancements in research and treatment. “We’re trying to give them things to do with their loved ones, how to deal with difficult situations they may encounter,” she said. “So many times, the caregivers are the ones who end up so stressed that they become sick and can’t take care of their loved ones.” Past meetings have included tips for caretakers on how to communicate or converse with their loved ones suffering from the disease. At this week’s meeting on Aug. 1, Silverado Senior Living (Sugar Land) Director of Resident Engagement Dana Declouet will provide resources for activities that caregivers can implement for dementia patients living at home
or within a care facility. Among other tips offered at meetings is the advice that sometimes the caretaker themselves need a respite, which can benefit both caretaker and patient. “They need to take time for themselves, they need to recharge. Their focus is on the loved one, and that’s important. But whatever type of dementia it is, it always reaches a point where it permeates many moments of the day and the night,” Wiedenfeld said. “One advantage to a respite is that a different environment or person interacting with the recipient can also provide outcomes the usual caregiver couldn’t get out to them. Sometimes just a different face can be a big bonus, because they may respond to different people for different reasons.” Added Cummings: “If the caregiver can get respite from that kind of situation where they’re not thinking for two people and dealing with the minute-by-minute repetition, they can come back in refreshed and deal with it better and give that care out of love as opposed to out of responsibility.” Whether it’s with the R ichmond-Rosenberg
caregivers group, which averages 15 attendees per meeting, or another one of the other similar groups around Fort Bend County, experts say getting involved in such an activity can pay dividends for an often-neglected group. “Something special can happen when a caregiver connects with someone going through a similar experience. Those members offer one another something unique – emotional comfort and moral support,” said Kathy Spetter with the Alzheimer’s Association's Houston and Southeast Texas branch, which has handled approximately 2,500 care consultations and referrals in the past year. “Some are a step ahead and can offer techniques and coping mechanisms. All of this helps to make the challenges and hurdles a little easier for them.” For more information about the R ichmond-Rosenberg support group, visit its Facebook page or email richmonddementia2014@ gmail.com. Memories last forever, until they don’t I don’t remember exactly when I realized that something was happening with my grandfather – or if I ever really knew what was happening before he passed away in 2006. Looking back, I wish I had cherished those times I had with him. Perhaps had I known what the future was to bring, I could have made a greater attempt to retain memories of the times my grandfather and I spent together – memories that my grandfather was destined to forget. I wish I would’ve been able to pick up on the fact that him not remembering who I was indicated a sign of something much graver than a temporary memory lapse. There’s no more painful feeling than thinking you could have done more. On today’s front page, we have a story that touches on the impacts of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia around the country and in Texas. It’s also about an area group that attempts to counteract the effects on those suffering from the disease and their caretakers. It’s an issue that hits far too close to home for me. According to an annual report from the Alzheimer’s Association, 5.8 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, and that number is projected to reach more than 14 million by 2050. Basically, one person per minute develops the disease, and one in three seniors die with Alzheimer’s or some other form of dementia, according to the report. My parents tell me they first noticed early signs of Alzheimer’s in my grandfather in 2000, when I was 8 years old. My grandfather was the owner and sole proprietor of Kurt’s Kabinet Shop where, for 45 years, he built up a sterling reputation for his cabinet-building craftsmanship. But one day, my father told me, my grandfather came and told my grandmother he was unable to finish up work on
Landan Kuhlmann LEAD REPORTER
a small cabinet because he couldn’t remember how to even begin the job. Ordinarily my father – who spent many summers working in that shop – said his father could finish such a job in an afternoon. But this time, he couldn’t get things to come together. Those were the first signs of what would only worsen. There were those times my grandfather would awake in the middle of the night thinking there had been people in the house – when none were there – and couldn’t be calmed down. It got to the point where my grandmother didn’t have the strength to take care of him anymore. According to my father, there eventually came a time when my grandfather did not remember or recognize my father. My dad told me that on one occasion, he and his father were sitting on the front porch of their home and, in a brief moment of clarity, my grandfather looked at him and said, “This is not how a person should have to live.” “When I would go visit him at the nursing home, I’d walk up to him and ask him how his day was,” my father said. “He would always have a big smile on his face, but he had no idea who I was.” Hearing that recollection is more painful than words can describe. I know I likely couldn’t have done much at my age, but nobody likes seeing their loved ones forced to deal with that level of mental anguish. I don’t have children of my own yet. If and when I do, I can’t imagine not remembering their names. I have friends who have children. Those children have become their world,
and on the flip side, the children view their parents as superheroes. As a child, I remember thinking my parents could do no wrong. To this day, I know I can count on them if I’m in a bind, and the love between us still knows no bounds. I know how much my father looked up to his dad, and how much I look up to my own. How would it feel if your mother or father suddenly told you they don’t know who you are? One of the things my dad and grandfather had in common was a love of hunting, which they did every year. But as my grandfather got worse, not even those memories struck a chord. “You have all these memories, and remember all these things about them,” my father said. “I spent all my time knowing and remembering who he was, knowing the whole time he didn’t remember who I was at all.” You might at first think
it’s a joke. The first time I recall my grandfather struggling to remember who I was, I was still in grade school. I processed it as, “Man, that’s weird,” before running off and not thinking much of it. What young boy would believe that someone who they see multiple times a year wouldn’t remember them? Wouldn’t remember those times looking through his collection of hunting caps in the hallway, or sneakily swiping food off your plate before feigning innocence? You think those types of memories will be etched in everyone’s mind forever. Unfortunately, for too many, the reality is that those memories slowly fade away as if they never happened. And as those cherished memories slowly dim, they struggle to retain remnants of their life, trying to hold onto every last memory. I know now that my grandfather’s early memory lapses were no laughing
matter. My grandfather passed away in December 2006 from what the Alzheimer’s Association said is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States. What’s more, I never realized the emotional and physical toll the disease can take – not just on the person suffering, but those taking care of them. More than 16 million people in the U.S. provide unpaid care for those living with some form of the disease. In my grandfather’s case, those care-taking responsibilities were shared initially by my grandmother, uncle and aunt. As his disease progressed, however, the family was finally forced to enlist the services of a specialized care facility. “The worst thing is that nobody knows what it’s like to be an Alzheimer’s
patient. Nobody knows what it’s like inside of a person’s head who is experiencing that,” my father said. “One of the most important things to an elderly person are their memories. Memories define who you are. They’re your life. When you’re older, that’s one of the things most critical to allowing a person to remain happy. I can’t imagine not knowing your son or daughter anymore.” Upon talking to my dad this weekend, I finally realized the mental, physical and emotional toll the whole progression had to have taken on him and his family. So cherish the time you have with your loved ones. Soak up each moment, no matter how fleeting or seemingly insignificant, because you never know how long that memory will be there for them.

Managing Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that is characterized by extreme up and down mood swings. The cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but there are some changes in the certain chemical in the brain. There are different levels with this condition with some symptoms being more severe than others. Symptoms of the highs include too much talking, being distracted, and involvement in risky activities. Symptoms of the lows include feeling empty, irritability, feeling worthless, and thoughts of death. Mood stabilizing medications such as lithium (lithobid) and valproic acid (Depakene) help manage highs and lows to stabilize behavior. Routine blood tests levels are required to make sure the dose and drug level is appropriate. Olanzapine (Zyprexa) and risperidone (Risperdal) help manage the extremem highs and lows when other medications are taken. These medications can cause side effects including jerky movements, dizziness, and weight gain. 08-03-16 - Ed’s Pharmacy - 2 x 4.5

There are also a number of shape characteristics that are different. Women have different arch shape and length as well as shorter toe bones. Women also have a greater first toe angle. Men and women can both experience foot ailments, although there can be differences in these as well. Women have hereditary foot problems such as bunions and hammertoes that are passed down more frequently from mothers to daughters rather than to sons. Men visit podiatrists more regularly than women for issues related to gout, arthritis, and heel pain. to many of the pervading problems in his own community,” Sugar Land resident Wil Smith said. “As a 20-year resident of the Sugar Land community, I only hope that we will finally get congressional representation that includes all in our community.” Olson, who graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1988, served as an officer and
pilot in the U.S. Navy from 1991-98. He then worked on the staffs of U.S. Senators Phil Gramm and John Cornyn before being elected to Congress. Olson said that though his time in Washington, D.C. is coming to an end, there is still work to be done. “Protecting our future and preserving our exceptional nation are the reasons I first ran for Congress. My constant focus was to strengthen our national security, expand our
