A recent outbreak of COVID-19 at a Missouri City nursing home has left 19 of its residents dead, according to a news release from the city. The city said Fort Bend County data provided on Wednesday reported 38 total cases of COVID-19, the infectious disease

caused by the new coronavirus, at Paradigm at First Colony nursing home at 4710 Lexington Blvd. Additionally, 24 staff members have also been infected. Mayor Yolanda Ford called the outbreak “harrowing” and said it emphasizes the continuing severity of COVID-19, which had infected 10,021 county residents as of Monday afternoon, according to Fort Bend

County. At least 113 county residents have died from the disease, while 4,351 patients have recovered, according to county data. Missouri City does not have local oversight of nursing homes within city limits, according to Ford. She said that responsibility falls to the state.

County fair canceled because of pandemic By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

The Fort Bend County Fair, which was originally slated to take place Sept. 25-Oct. 4, has been canceled for the first time since World War II due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “After careful consideration for the health and safety of our community and fairgoers, the difficult decision was reached after months of discussions and

Sugar Land allowing restaurants to expand outdoor dining By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Restaurants in the city of Sugar Land could soon be able to expand their outdoor dining capacity in an attempt to help them cope with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. That is a blessing for some in the hospitality industry, such as Pacific Coast Tacos situated in Lake Pointe Town Center. Restaurants across Texas have been forced to reduce their indoor dine-in

allow restaurants in the municipality to temporarily expand their outdoor dining areas, including by using space in their parking lots. The city said it will work with businesses to maximize onsite capacity while keeping diners safe in accordance with federal and state guidelines. "I'm excited that we've identified a new and innovative opportunity to support our business community," City Manager Michael W. Goodrum said. "Our top priority will

always be the safety of our citizens, but we must also work with our businesses to ensure the economic health of our city. … This pandemic may not be over soon, so we must be prepared to work together for our common good." Nicole Solis, Sugar Land’s assistant director of environmental and neighborhood services, said an area business reached out to the city July 14 inquiring about providing additional possibilities for outdoor seating, which is not calculated as part of

the 50 percent maximum capacity allowed for an establishment under Abbott’s order. “They were looking for ways to make their customers a little more comfortable coming in while allowing them to serve more customers,” she said. The idea has been welcomed by those in the restaurant industry, including Pacific Coast Tacos. Espinosa said

COVID-19 testing center opens at Missouri City church By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

With Missouri City reeling from a recent COVID-19 outbreak at Paradigm at First Colony Nursing home, the area’s state and federal representatives partnered with United Memorial Medical Center and local faith leaders to open a free coronavirus testing center Monday at Christ Temple of Deliverance church. State Rep. Ron Reynolds of District 27 and U.S. Rep. Al Green of District 9 were in attendance for the opening of the testing site,

along with Bishop Destry Bell. “Those who need testing, (even) if they don’t think they need it, they should come,” Bell said. The free testing location replaces a Missouri City site previously operated by Fort Bend County, which has added a testing location at Fifth Street Community Center in Stafford. The county also is administering free COVID-19 tests at Smart Financial Centre in Sugar Land, Gallery Furniture in Richmond and Seven Lakes Middle School in Katy. Appointments are required at the county sites and can be made by visiting

The testing site at Christ Temple of Deliverance, located at 3710 McHard Rd., is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m for drive-up testing. No symptoms or referrals are required to obtain a test. A photo ID is required. Reynolds and Green had previously tested negative, and Green brought out his test results in front of a gathering of reporters, inviting onlookers to examine them. He also added that all of his staff that have volunteered to travel with him to public appearances have also been tested and thus far, all have tested negative for coronavirus. CAN CHIROPRACTIC HELP ME? Hear it from real patients

A:

Real Ear Measurement technology allows an audiologist to measure the sound that the hearing Terry Snook AuD, FAAA aid is amplifying while in a patient’s ear. By using a computer and a tiny microphone placed within the ear canal, sound is measured while the hearing aid is activated. While the microphone measures sound being amplified by the hearing aid, adjustments can be made to make sure the aid is programmed correctly. This creates precise adjustments for individual hearing losses as well as acoustic differences due to different sized and shaped ear canals. By obtaining these physical measurements, the effectiveness of the hearing aid settings can be verified. This creates an accurate fitting and subsequently improved hearing. These measurements are visible on the computer screen so that the patient can see the results as changes are being made. If you would like additional information about this technology, please contact us at Advanced Hearing Center, 281-491-0200.

iterated their emphasis on the importance of testing, wearing masks and social distancing. “We went through this with seatbelts,” Green said. “There were people who thought they had a constitutional right to drive without seatbelts. … Seatbelts save lives. Because seatbelts save lives and injuries, our insurance (costs) less. It’s important for us to understand that with this virus — you can go without a mask in your home if you choose to — but if you’re going to be in the public, you’re putting yourself and others at risk. You don’t have a right to put others at risk.” Green was asked about finding a solution to provide Texans with another round of stimulus relief and addressed what he said was lacking in President Donald Trump’s recent executive order, including a $400 weekly check to the unemployed, $100 of which would come from state coffers. “I want to see $600 (per week in unemployment benefits),” Green said. “We, the government, need to step up and get back to the negotiating table. Compromise is not capitulation.” In addition, Green announced a food drive would be held along with the Houston Food Bank at Christ Temple of Deliverance from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Bell said volunteers are welcome to assist the food bank with the food drive on Saturday and that those interested should arrive between 9:30-10 a.m.

Clements choir director wins regional TASA teaching honor Clements principal David Yaffie said Menzie’s level of “instructional expertise” provides her students with a critical foundation for their development as musicians. She was previously named FBISD’s 2019-20 secondary teacher of the year. “I am in awe of what she has accomplished. Beyond her teaching skills, Janet cares for each of her students as if they were her own children,” Yaffie said. “Her students know she supports them as unique individuals with unique talents and skills.”

Clements High School choir director Janet Menzie was named the 2021 Region 4 Secondary Teacher of the Year during a virtual awards ceremony Monday, according to a news release from Fort Bend ISD. As a result, Menzie will be up for a statewide honor at the Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) Texas Teacher of the Year program. The winner will be announced during a joint convention

any accessibility ramps, and is prohibited from being in a fire lane or major lane of traffic. Restaurants will also be required to submit the total number of proposed tables as they will still have to comply with the 6-foot social distancing requirements between guest tables. There will be no cost associated with the approval process for area restaurants, according to Solis, only an agreement letter between the city and business owner. If the business owner is leasing the property, then agreement will be required from the city as well as both the business and landowner. “We would want everybody on the same page,” Solis said. “We’re thinking about what is in the city’s power to do to assist our local businesses so that in the end we come out as well as we can. This is a very challenging time for businesses, our residents and municipalities across the board. So we’re trying to do the best with the challenges that we’re facing.” Interested restaurant owners can make a request to the city for the temporary expansion by contacting Solis at nsolis@ sugarlandtx.gov or 281275-2291.

Managing Myasthenia Gravis

Myasthenia Gravis is a condition that affects the nervous system and can result in significant muscle weakness. It occurs when a substance called acetylcholine in the brain is destroyed by the body’s own immune system. Acetylcholine is responsible for transmitting signals from the brain that control muscle movement. Other symptoms of the disease may include blurred vision and difficulty swallowing. Prescription medications to treat the disorder include anticholinesterase agents such as pyridostigmine (Mestinon). These agents work by preventing the destruction of acetylcholine in the body and improve muscle strength and function. Treatment with corticosteroids such as prednisone (Deltasone) suppress the immune system and also may prevent the breakdown of acetylcholine. If these therapies are unsuccessful, a surgical procedure to remove the thymus (thymectomy) can significantly reduce symptoms. The thymus is an organ that regulates the immune system and is often found to be abnormal in many individuals with myasthenia gravis. 07-12-17 - Ed’s Pharmacy - 2 x 4.5

New direction brings exciting possibilities Conventional wisdom, for whatever it’s worth, tends to lean toward a consensus that there’s a time and a place for everything. And I’m very grateful to finally be able to call Houston home and to be covering your local communities here in Fort Bend County. You’ve no doubt been wanting to put a face to the new name you’ve seen online and in last week’s paper. My name is Stefan Modrich, and in my new role as a reporter here at the Fort Bend Star, I hope to make a good impression on you, dear reader, and to become a conduit for your voice. I find myself at home working in Fort Bend not only because of my love of Buc-ee’s brisket, chicken tikka masala and matcha bubble tea, but because I feel like I belong among this diverse set of ethnic groups and communities, a place that is both forward-thinking

and accepting but also values tradition and history. I have always been a voracious reader and consumer of news, going back to the time I read the Chicago Tribune and The Wall Street Journal at the breakfast table. As a fourth grader it was only the Tribune’s sports and comics section that drew my attention, but it didn’t take long for me to open myself up to a vast media landscape that continues to grow and evolve in ways that are nearly impossible to predict. Those same characteristics have defined, in some way, nearly every place I’ve lived, whether it was growing up in Chi-

cago, where I was born and raised, going to college at Arizona State University (Go Devils!) or living abroad in Croatia and having tremendous opportunities to travel to Spain, France, Hungary, Slovakia, and many other places previously unknown only outside of a map. I’m proud of my family’s origin story and ancestry, and I know so many of the immigrant families in Fort Bend are as well. So I look forward to speaking with those of you who may not even realize yet just how historically significant your presence is in this richly multicultural place and its implications for a more truly diverse nation in the years and decades to come. I’m also very fortunate to have started my journey in Texas with The Brownsville Herald, where I was a sports reporter covering the Rio Grande Valley, a border community that has

strong and ever-present ties to the Houston area. Moving here from the Valley during a global pandemic and Hurricane Hanna was quite a difficult obstacle to overcome. But I’m happy to admit that during some of the more trying and challenging periods of life in quarantine, I found solace in being reminded what one of my interview subjects, ESPN producer Jeremy Williams, called the hardworking student-athletes and families they met in Brownsville — “the greatest Americans I’ve ever met.” The pandemic and the resulting crises have not relented, of course. And yet already, I am in awe of the melting pot of people in Fort Bend, from Missouri City to Kendleton and everywhere in between, for their resiliency and their instincts to look out for one another. County officials: Number of COVID-19 cases spike because of system backlog By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Fort Bend County officials announced Aug. 5 that a change in their COVID-19 tracking and contact tracing system would result in an “exponential increase” in cases, according to County Judge KP George. Dr. Jacquelyn Johnson Minter, the director of the county’s Health and Human Services department, said Texas Health Trace, the state’s data management and contact tracing system for COVID-19 cases, had begun to attribute a backlog of coronavirus cases to patients in Fort Bend County that had not been previously reported to county officials.

★ OUTBREAK FROM PAGE 1 “We will only beat this virus if we all cooperate by following mandatory facial covering orders, practicing proper social distancing, following health safety guidelines and increasing communication among our

★ FAIR FROM PAGE 1 planning with board members, staff, and committeemen, as well as with county, city & health officials,” County Fair officials wrote in a statement. “The Fair Association will faithfully and respectfully follow the city and county’s recommendation.” Sean Gutierrez, the president of the fair, said in a Facebook video that the fair is still planning to hold a modified livestock show and auctions, along with other traditions such as awarding scholarships and crowning a fair queen, but the events are still in the preliminary planning stages. All of those events are required to adhere to state and county coronavirus mitigation guidelines. “Our event has changed, but our spirit has not,” Gutierrez said. “Volunteers make the difference. As your event may have been canceled, your opportunity to help has not. As we make the necessary modifications to meet the COVID-19 mitigation plan, we will be reaching out to all our volunteers to help us fill different roles.” Gutierrez said an altered schedule for the modified events is forthcoming. In the interim, the Fair Association announced it plans to hold next year’s fair from Sept. 24-Oct. 3, 2021.

As of Monday, the county had reported 10,018 total coronavirus cases, adding 2,064 cases since Aug. 5. Of those newly reported cases, 1,538 resulted from the Texas Health Trace backlog, according to the county. “Only a portion of those will be newly confirmed cases,” Minter said during an Aug. 5 news conference at the County Courthouse in Richmond. “We will provide identification of which cases were in the database before and which cases are currently new cases.” George said the recent spike in new cases is a result of community spread, not from outside the county. “You need to be careful. You need to be living your life with caution,” George

local, county and state leaders,” Ford said. “The city is concerned about the individuals and families who are affected by the Paradigm cases, and staff will continue to monitoring the situation and working proactively to help flatten the curve.” For COVID-19 updates and information

said. “COVID is still here. It is real.” According to county data, there have been 52,909 total tests administered by county-sanctioned sites. In addition, 3,451 patients have recovered from COVID-19 and 113 deaths have been reported among county residents. According to the SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC), which tracks ICU and hospital bed usage in the region, 26.4 percent of the county’s ICU patients as of Monday were suspected or confirmed coronavirus cases. COVID-19 patients represented 15.2 percent of the total number of patients in general hospital beds. The county’s hospitals as a whole remain below their

operational capacities for both general beds and ICU beds, although only 16 of 122 ICU beds were available as of Monday. Rita Obey, a spokesperson for the county’s Health and Human Services department, said it is important for the community to recognize their role in minimizing the spread of the virus. “Every person has to be able to recognize that while they may have important business that they may need to attend to, that they need to think through how those decisions may impact their family members,” Obey said. “There are a lot of activities that are available for people to engage in, but are they the best option for them to protect their family members?”

onto the scene and going viral, or you and your family are raising chickens, starting a garden, or helping volunteer at a food bank to help your neighbors, please share them with me. Are you an essential worker? A first responder? I want to hear from you. And likewise, if you feel you aren’t getting a fair shake during a time when so many are struggling, I also want to hear from you. As members of the press, our job, as it was famously detailed by Chicago journalist Finley Peter Dunne in his portrayal of the fictional character Mr. Dooley, “is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” When you see my name in this space, I will ask you to respect the distinction between my reporting and my opinion and hold me to the same high standards I hold myself. My responsibility to you outside of this column is to pro-

vide rigorous, unbiased reporting, and it’s something I always have and always will strive for no matter where my byline appears. I will also ask you to continue to support my colleagues and I through word-of-mouth and by letting us know when our work is meaningful to you, as well as when you think we fell short and could have done better. If you have a book or movie recommendation or if you see me out and about on a running trail or at a restaurant and would like to say hello from a safe, social distance, you’re more than welcome to. I hope you’ll reach out to me when you can to let me know what’s on your mind, and what I can do to bring light to the concerns and the triumphs alike of this diverse and vibrant place. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT YOU CAN GIVE YOUR FAMILY?

Life Lesson: You cannot control what the future will bring, but you CAN control the LEGACY you will leave Margie Connolly, your family. Attorney Legacy: The fundamental purpose of estate planning is to leave a legacy for the living. It is not that death and taxes are unimportant, they just pale in significance to the legacy you leave behind. Unfortunately, numerous studies show that over 50% of Americans have no estate plan, no will and no medical directives. Why do so many people fail to properly plan for what happens at the end of their life? Simon & Garfunkel may have gotten to the heart of things in one of their songs: So I’ll continue to continue to pretend / My life will never end....

Q: A:

Can a repair facility save me from paying my deductible? An honest repair shop will always say “no” to saving deductibles. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance Chuck Charlton carrier. It basically says that if you have a collision loss, you are responsible for the first portion of repairs (your deductible) and the insurance company will pay the rest. If the final repair cost is less, you’re still responsible for the predetermined deductible amount. Any reduction should correctly go back to the insurance company. There are legitimate ways to reduce your cost. An appearance allowance (credit towards your deductible usually for minor cosmetic repairs not completed) is one way but must be consulted with your insurance company. Be wary of the repair shop that offers to save you your deductible. Are they completing all repairs or is your safety being jeopardized with an inadequate repair?

Missouri City baseball player Logan Shields, at right preparing to swing, was invited to the Perfect Game 12U Select Baseball Festival. (Contributed photo)

Missouri City teenager selected for national baseball showcase By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

For much of his life, Logan Shields has traded off between perfecting his academic work as a home-schooled student and perfecting his craft as an athlete. The latter endeavor resulted in the Missouri City teenager being chosen to participate in a national select baseball tournament later this month. Shields, a seventh-grader at Thornton Middle School who pitches and plays third base, was one of 28 players recently selected to play in the inaugural Perfect Game 12U Select Baseball Festival on Aug. 28-30 in Marietta, Georgia. The event will showcase the talents of the top 12-and-under players in the country as selected by Perfect Game staff members. Those selected must have attended at least one Perfect Game tournament or Perfect Game “The Series” event in 2020 to be considered for selection. “I put in a lot of hard work going out to the baseball field with my dad, and my mom is the one that really pushes me,” Shields said. “It felt amazing knowing my name was out there among the top kids in the nation.” In addition to scheduled tournaments and other games, some participants also took part in a series of skills-training exercises and competitions against similarly-skilled players during the 2020 season until the player pool was whittled down to 28. Though he had been noticed before, Shields said his selection was special. “I was honestly just surprised that I made it that far,” he said. Success on the diamond is in Shields’ bloodlines. His mother, Stacy Shields, was a high school softball player, while his aunt pitched at Texas Lutheran University. Ever since picking up a ball at age 3 and playing T-ball at age 5, Stacy said her son immediately took to the game and has never taken his talent for granted – even as it takes him around the region and the country to states like Georgia, where he was playing in a tournament last weekend.

“We definitely do have some ball background, and we do push him pretty hard. But he’s definitely embraced it all,” Stacy said. “He’s extremely hardheaded and very competitive, so that helps with his drive as well. His coaches all have very high expectations as well, so everybody involved really pushes him hard.” Logan echoed the sentiment. “I tried it out in T-ball and thought it was fun, so I kept on playing it and loving it from there,” he said. It’s not the first time the younger Shields has been recognized for his standout talent. He was also chosen for the 12U USA national team that traveled to Taiwan as part of the U17 Baseball World Cup last year, and pitched in a win against the Korean 12U national team. Closer to home, he has played with Houston-based ZT Elite select baseball team for the past three years and will do so again this season. But amidst the success – on or off the field – Stacy Shields said the family mantra has always been to enjoy it while keeping their nose to the grindstone. She also said playing with select and national teams has helped Logan develop a maturity that belies his years. “We were just so proud (when he was selected), because he has definitely put in all the hard work,” she said. “We’ve always stressed to him to work hard, but also stay humble. You can be good today and not so good tomorrow.” Logan appears to have taken the advice to heart. When he’s not traveling the country or the world playing baseball, he’s laying low at a friend’s lake house or the neighborhood pool in Sienna, at an amusement park or playing video games. But when he’s on that field and all eyes are on him, Stacy said her son is living his passion – which is all a parent can want for their child. “We’re very nervous when he pitches like all parents are,” she said. “But just seeing the smile on his face because he loves the game and wants to be one of the top players makes us so proud.”

Barely a month since beginning play, the four-team Constellation Energy League in Sugar Land has already seen multiple player contracts purchased by MLB organizations. Most recently, the Chicago Cubs purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Matt Dermody on Aug. 8, while Brett Eibner was signed by the Miami Marlins on Aug. 2. =

Pitchers Fernando Rodney and Chase De Jong are both with the Houston Astros, having had their contracts purchased Aug. 7 and July 31, respectively. Rodney was the first player to have his contract purchased from the Constellation Energy League, according to a news release from the Sugar Land Skeeters, the independent minor league franchise that started the league. Rodney made one appearance in the league on July 26, throwing a scoreless inning of relief with one strikeout to finish out a 50 win for Team Skeeters. The 33-year-old hurler and three-time MLB All Star has 17 seasons of big league experience, most recently with the World Series champion Washington Nationals in 2019. De Jong accumulated a 3.18 ERA for Team Skeeters in five starts, striking out 27 hitters in 17 innings. The 26-year-old appeared with the Seattle Mariners during the 2017 and 2018 seasons and with the Minnesota Twins in 2019, making 12 total appearances. Eibner was a two-way player for Team Eastern Reyes del Tigre, throwing 5.1 scoreless innings while striking out eight batters over five games. He also appeared in seven games as an outfielder and designated hitter this season after pitching eight games for the Skeeters in 2019. Dermody, meanwhile, posted a 0.79 ERA in four outings for Team Skeeters with 17 strikeouts in 11.1 innings pitched. His most recent MLB experience was with the Toronto Blue Jays, with whom he made 28 appearances during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns. Review: Pupuseria Lazo strikes the right balance By Stefan Modrich SMODRICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

In order to fully appreciate the cuisine of one of the fast-growing ethnic groups in the Greater Houston area and Fort Bend County, treating yourself to a pupusa is a must. For pupusas of the El Salvadoran variety, Fort Bend residents have several options to choose from in close proximity. At Pupuseria Lazo #2 in Stafford, you can expect a quality and inexpensive meal that is well-balanced and satisfying. By going off the main menu, I spent less than $15 and ended up with

enough food to easily share between two people. For those who are venturing out to try pupusas ($1.50 and up) for the first time, here is a primer: A pupusa is a thick flatbread stuffed with cheese and your choice of protein. It has a soft and smooth texture on the inside and out. You can try them the way I did — stuffed with beans and pork — or with loroco, an edible flower that has a similar flavor profile to broccoli, chard or squash. No pupusa is complete without its sidekick, curtido. Salvadoran curtido is like coleslaw or kimchi, lightly fermented and most often made with a white

cabbage base. It also includes onions, carrots, oregano and sometimes lime juice. Curtido’s bright, crisp and crunchy texture pairs well with the hearty, chewy pupusa. Other popular items are tamales ($1.25 and up), which differ mainly from Mexican tamales in that they are made with banana leaves instead of corn husks. A glass of horchata, a plant-based milk, is an excellent way to wash down a meal like this. But there are several refrescos (natural juices) available, including natural flavors like hibiscus and tamarind ($2.50 for a medium, $3.50 for a large). Sodas are $1 in a can and $2.50 for a bottle.

TikTok users have no doubt been entertained as Jaime’s account, @jaimecrawford34, now has 33,500 followers. “He loves tomatoes,” Jaime said. “We were watching ‘Veggie Tales,’ and Bob the

Tomato came on the screen. I tried to get him to say ‘Bob the Tomato’ and obviously he could say ‘Bob’ super easily. But then he got tripped up on the tomato part. So that’s when that whole thing kind of started. “For some reason, he could not say tomato. And the more we laughed, obviously, the more (likely it was) he wouldn’t do it.” Jaime said TikTok provided a way for the family to entertain friends and other

relatives with their son’s progress from infancy into childhood. “It was really nice to give them a little insight into what Cannon is up to these days,” Jaime said. Now, the entire country has had a chance to watch Cannon. “We’re pretty excited to see it,” Jaime said before it aired. “We’re all going to have a little watch party for it.” The show’s premise, according to a CBS/Viacom news release, is to highlight the “creativity, humor and humanity” of the shared experience of quarantining and social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The show is hosted by Cedric The Entertainer. As a toddler, Cannon may not be able to fully grasp the significance of his social media stardom and network television fame. But his

Any time you prompt him to say it, he knows exactly what (you’re doing). He’s like a little actor, it’s insane. So, now we’re trying to get him to say ‘rectangle’ but he does the same thing. He’s catching on to us videoing him and he really likes to be in front of the camera, so it will be interesting to see kind of what he comes up with in the future.
