Railroad commission cites area petroleum company for foul odor From Staff Reports

A Fort Bend County petroleum company has been cited for noncompliance with a state rule after an unpleasant smell pervaded the air near Missouri City last week, according to a Sept. 13 news release from the city. Missouri City said it had been contacted by

citizens over a period of several days about a foul odor near the intersection of Fort Bend Parkway Toll Road and FM 2234, just outside city limits. The Railroad Commission of Texas investigated and found the smell to be caused by well operations from Viceroy Petroleum at 5526 McHard Rd. in Fort Bend County, according to Missouri City. The railroad commis-

sion issued Viceroy a citation for noncompliance with a state rule requiring gas releases to be burned in a flare for safety reasons, according to a Sept. 13 statement from railroad commission spokesperson Gaye Greever McElwain. “An inspector determined the source of the odor to be drilling and completion operations on the Viceroy Petroleum Cities Services Fee Lease Well

No 1951,” McElwain said in the statement, which was released by Missouri City. “Open top tanks on the lease have been emptied of fluid. The operator has altered the flow of fluids into covered storage tanks and is installing separation equipment so that any excess gas from the liquid may be flared.” McElwain said no spillage of fluids or impacts to groundwater in the area

were observed. The area where the foul odor was noticed is within a few miles of three Fort Bend ISD campuses as well as the Fort Bend Boys & Girls Club. “In this instance, county officials were in communication with the company and no precautions were advised for our schools and campuses,” FBISD spokesperson Amanda Bubela said in a statement.

Stafford FD awarded federal grant By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Stafford’s fire department will soon be able to add more firefighters to its workforce to help serve the city’s residents. U.S. Sen. John Cornyn’s office announced Sept. 11 that the Stafford Fire Department was awarded a federal grant for $753,778.80 to increase its full-time staff by 60 percent and support its work. The Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant provides direct funding to fire departments and volunteer firefighter organizations to help increase the number of trained firefighters. “As a department we are

Free cleaning a blessing for area woman battling breast cancer By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Lorna Broomfield, who owns a local housecleaning business, knows firsthand how chemotherapy treatments can drain energy from a person as they battle cancer. Sugar Land resident Susan Phillips is engaged in such a battle and unable to perform her typical housecleaning duties due to limited mobility following multiple surgeries. Broomfield is now helping Phillips through a nationwide partnership called “Cleaning For A Reason” that has connections in Fort Bend County. Cleaning For A Reason is a nonprofit organization that provides free housecleaning services to women undergoing cancer treatment. Since beginning in 2006, Cleaning For A Reason has partnered with maid services such as Broomfield’s You’ve Got Maids of Sugar Land to clean for more than 30,000 women in the United States and Canada. For Broomfield, the

cause hits close to home as her sister lost her battle with cancer in 2017. That experience inspired her partnership with Cleaning For A Reason. “I remember each time she completed a treatment, she always said she didn’t feel good for quite a few hours,” Broomfield said. “I just thought giving the gift of a clean home could provide a little bright spot in their day. They’re always so grateful for it, and they can focus just on themselves for just a quick minute without having to worry about it.” Enter Phillips, who is currently battling HER2positive – an aggressive form of breast cancer that has required multiple surgeries this year. Her home has been cleaned by Broomfield on multiple occasions. “Between battling infections from multiple surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, and then raising multiple teenagers, I’ve had a lot of things going on,” Phillips said. Broomfield and You’ve Got Maids provide women with two cleaners for two

ber 2018, the business has provided service to six cancer patients. “When I heard all about what it was all about, the idea automatically attract-

Lighthouse Church expands to Sugar Land By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Though he grew up going to church, Keion Henderson never envisioned starting his own upon moving to Houston. He certainly didn’t foresee himself moving a ministry to Sugar Land. Now, though, the former college basketball player from Indiana is nearly a decade into heading up one of Houston’s fastest-growing churches. And it just planted roots in Fort Bend County, where Henderson’s Lighthouse Church has opened a Sugar Land location called Lighthouse

South. “I never had a plan to start a church,” Henderson said. “(Sugar Land) was a full-circle moment.” Henderson is the se-

nior pastor at Lighthouse Church, which he started in 2009 with 100 members. It has grown to a community of more than 10,000. The new location is at 16305

Kensington Dr. in Sugar Land, where a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Sept. 5. The church also has locations in central Houston

and Humble and is set to open Lighthouse West in Katy later this year. “I think it’ll be an added asset in Sugar Land to have another great entity that wants to give back to our community,” Sugar Land city councilman Naushad Kermally said. “It’s not just about the church, it’s about the community. They see an opportunity in all of Fort Bend County to have services here to benefit all of us down here.” Humble beginnings Henderson grew up in Gary, Indiana, and said he

Fort Bend jury selection needs to move with times In early August, I received a summons to the Fort Bend County Justice Center in Richmond to do my civic duty. Upon arriving and checking in Aug. 6, I was seated – along with more than 200 others – in a room resembling a court setting. That was just the beginning of a process I have since realized could be streamlined a bit to make it as painless as possible for those having to make trips back and forth to the courthouse, which interrupts their daily home and work lives. Though potentially fruitful, the jury selection process can be arduous even under the best circumstances.

Landan Kuhlmann LEAD REPORTER

After watching an introductory video, we got the news from the presiding judge that the case we would be providing judgment on would be one with major implications. As such, we were required to sit on hard-backed benches, hunched over a writing board, answering a more than 100-question handout

from attorneys pertaining to our thoughts and attitudes toward certain punishments and more. After handing it in, you were done for the day. It would take several weeks to pore over the answers, and jurors were called back and questioned by attorneys based on their answers. So beginning two weeks later, jurors were called back to the courthouse in groups of 30 or so at a time – one session in the morning, one in the afternoon. This went on for multiple weeks, until that field was narrowed down to 100 or so prior to finally selecting the jury earlier this week. So all told, it took nearly six weeks, and three

separate trips to the courthouse, to find out I would not be serving on this particular jury. And the process got me thinking it was a bit archaic and time-consuming. Now, I understand that with it being a major trial, attorneys wanted to take all the time necessary to thoroughly vet a jury, and must do so in the best interests of their clients. This may not even be the norm for a criminal trial. But that said, I believe there are ways even the necessary processes for these types of cases could be trimmed down. First, make the questionnaire an online task, so those required to complete it do not have to drive 25-

30 miles out of their way to fill out it like they’re back in college. The way the world is moving, most everything is online nowadays – so why not cut out the middle man? The whole trip just seemed unnecessary for a task which could have easily been completed in the comfort of one’s home. Additionally, I think this would make the whole thing easier on the attorneys themselves, and not just the jurors. Instead of having to decipher hundreds of variations of handwriting, they could scroll through typed-out answers. We have the technology to make it easier, so why not use it? Secondly, the additional round of questioning ju-

rors prior to narrowing the field – which essentially backed up answers that had already been provided – didn’t seem as though it served much of a purpose. I spoke with my parents, both of whom have gone through the selection process before, and they agreed it was unusual, even for criminal cases. So why do it? On the whole, I enjoyed seeing the inner workings of how a jury is selected and all that is needed to create one as fair and objective as possible. But going forward, I think one can be created with much less hassle to the people enduring the process.

Area women charged in money laundering sting From Staff Reports

Two Fort Bend County women were recently arrested as part of an international law enforcement effort to curb money laundering. According to a news release from the FBI, Omomofe Esther Lawrence of Sugar Land and 34-yearold Lilian Taiye Obayemi of Rosenberg were among 19 people charged in the Greater Houston area as part of a four-month operation dubbed “Operation reWired” targeting Business Email Compromise (BEC) Schemes and their perpetrators. There were a total of 281

people arrested in the United States and overseas and nearly $3.7 million seized by authorities, according to the FBI. Lawrence and Obayemi were both charged with money laundering as part of the local sting, which was a joint effort by the FBI Houston Field Office, Houston Police Department, the

Harris County District Attorney’s Office (HCDAO), the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office (FBCDAO) and the U.S. Attorney’s Office Southern District of Texas. The FBI release said BEC schemes often target employees with access to company finances and businesses working with foreign

housecleaning is just not some-thing we can justify spending money on. Up until the surgeries, I had two hands and I used them.” But with her and her family now having been the beneficiary of Broomfield and You’ve Got Maids’ partnership with Cleaning for A Reason, Phillips is

grateful and calls them a “godsend.” “It’s such a relief to have someone come in and clean without you having to worry about it,” Phil-lips said. “After they go, it’s like you’re walking through an entirely new house. It’s like the cleaning fairies came in. We’ve got so much on

suppliers and/or businesses that regularly perform wire transfer payments. BEC perpetrators also exploit individual victims, often real estate purchasers, the elderly and others by convincing them to make wire transfers to bank accounts controlled by the criminals. A spokesperson for the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office, which will be handling the cases of Lawrence and Obayemi, said there is no evidence the two were working together. Lawrence is scheduled to appear Sept. 23 in the 282nd District Court, while Obayemi is scheduled to appear Oct. 14. our plates right now, it was such a relief to have someone take that off our plates for a while.”

Modern Business Requires Modern Connectivity

UH unveils Technology College’s first Fort Bend County presence By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

More cloud. More devices. More applications. Your business needs more to do more. We’ve brought world-class Internet speeds, innovative communications solutions, and expertise — once available only in really big cities — to your community. Now you can do more in the town you love, without settling for the slow connectivity you don’t.

Last month, Fort Bend County Judge KP George announced the formation of a task force designed to attract technology companies to the area. On the heels of that announcement, the University of Houston at Sugar Land has revealed the culmination of an effort designed to satisfy

the needs of such a business influx. University of Houston President Renu Khator and more than 150 guests celebrated the official opening of UH’s new College of Technology building Sept. 12 on the university’s Sugar Land campus. The $54 million, 100,000 square-foot facility – funded through tuition revenue bonds in 2015 – will house programs such as Digital Media, Biotechnology,

Supply Chain & Logistics Technology and Construction Management to accommodate evolving industries in Fort Bend County. Though there is a College of Technology presence on UH’s main campus, the recently opened UH-Sugar Land building is the first dedicated presence in Fort Bend County. Jay Neal, UH-Sugar Land’s associate vice president of academic affairs and chief operating officer, said the school consistently has Fort Bend companies inquiring about needing students to fill job or internship vacancies. It now possesses the means for businesses to find their unique needs close to home. The facility contains 10 different research labs for the 1,200 students enrolled in College of Technology courses as of this semester. “By bringing this one college to the Greater Fort Bend County area, we can serve a lot of businesses with creating students and young professionals that really fit into that workforce,” Neal said. “It gives us the flexibility to work with the business community and make sure we’re providing them. The other colleges throughout the UH system are a little envious right now, but it’s a good problem to have.” UH College of Technology

@FtBendAthletics:

Travis stuns Spring as quarterback leads comeback By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Eric Rodriguez and his receivers ran rampant around the football field Friday night, with the Travis High School quarterback accounting for 567 total yards and eight touchdowns. The Tigers needed every bit of offense they could get while erasing multiple double-digit deficits in a thriller against Spring. Travis rallied with 22 unanswered points to pull out a 53-49 win and improve to 3-0 this season. “The cornerstone to any comeback like we had was the players’ commitment in each other to find a way to stay in the game no matter the situation,” Travis coach Trey Sissom said. “Offensively,

we knew we had to keep the pressure on by scoring and scoring fast.” Rodriguez completed 30 of 36 passes for 453 yards and six touchdowns without throwing an interception for the Tigers, who trailed 49-31 at one point in the second half. He also made Spring pay

with his legs, rushing for 114 yards and two more TDs. Rodriguez’s favorite targets were senior receivers Parker Washington (170 yards, two TDs) and Jarrell Farr (152 yards, two TDs), while Colin Mushinski (87 yards, one TD) also helped key the comeback.

– as Elkins took down the Chavez 44-20 to remain unbeaten and deal Chavez its first loss of 2019. Lee has accounted for 479 all-purpose yards through the Knights’ first three games, reaching the end zone five times. Elkins and Travis were among five area teams that won last week. Marshall also improved to 3-0 with a blowout win against Milby. Bush, Kempner and Ridge Point take 2-1 records in this week’s games, while Clements, Dulles and Hightower are 1-2. Austin and Stafford are 0-3. Willowridge, which had a bye last week, is 1-1.

“Our offense is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and Eric and our receivers know that most defenses cannot match up with all of our weapons when we’re playing at the tempo we want to,” Sissom said. “Eric has been great at spreading the ball around to different players and taking our shots at the end zone when we can. The offensive line has done a good job of protecting Eric and opening up holes in our run game to keep the chains moving with first downs.” Lee’s all-around performance boosts Knights Senior athlete Jacory Lee was a force all over the field Thursday night, accounting for two touchdowns and 180 all-purpose yards – 78 rushing, 61 receiving, 41 return

The Sugar Land Skeeters will wear special edition “Come and Take It” uniforms during the upcoming Atlantic League postseason. The Skeeters, winners of the Atlantic League championship in 2018, clinched a 2019 postseason berth after winning the first-half title in the Freedom Division. They’ll be hosting Games 1 and 2 of the Freedom Division Championship Series on Sept. 24-25 at Constellation Field. The Skeeters chose the “Come and Take It” theme as a tribute to the 1835 Battle of Gonzales, which was the first military engagement of the Texas Revolution. As part of the “Come and Take It” theme, the Skeeters will have a cannon on site that will be shot before each game as well as Battle of Gonzales reenactors available for photos and meetand-greets throughout the game. There will be several ticketing and promotional specials based off significant dates from the Battle of Gonzales. Each playoff game at Constellation Field will begin at 6:35 p.m. as a tribute to the year 1835. If the Skeeters advance to the Atlantic League Championship Series, they would host Game 3, along with Games 4 and 5, if necessary, which would occur from Oct. 4-6. Halloween Town Constellation Field will host the 2019 Halloween Town, presented by Imperial Sugar, on Oct. 26. Halloween Town will run from 4-8 p.m. Adult tickets can be purchased in early October for $7, with children’s tickets available for $5. Sugar Land residents can visit the TDECU Ticket Office at Constellation Field and present a City of Sugar Land water bill to receive up to four free tickets. The free tickets are limited and will be available for pickup in early October.

ATHLETE’S FOOT

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that results in red, scaly, itchy rashes, and in some cases, blisters between and around the toes. The infection can spread to other parts of the body if you don’t wash your hands after touching the affected area, and it can also lead to fungal nail infections. If left untreated, bacteria can get under cracked skin and cause cellulitis. Athlete’s foot usually occurs when you don’t practice proper foot hygiene like keeping feet clean and dry and wearing breathable footwear. Avoid going bare-footed in places like locker rooms and gym showers and don’t share shoes and socks with other people. Athlete’s foot can usually be treated with over-the-counter antifungal sprays and creams. P.S. Some antifungal treatments for athlete’s foot are not considered safe for children, older people, and pregnant or breastfeeding women, so be sure to consult your doctor or pharmacist. Home treatments for athlete’s foot may bring short-term, temporary relief, but medical answers are your best bet for effective, long-lasting results. At our office, our aim is to prevent, not just repair. Don’t wait for fungal infections, skin conditions, and aches and pains to disappear like magic, because they won’t. Come see us instead for prompt, personal attention to your feet’s every need. Office hours are by appointment at 3143 Hwy. 6 South; call 281-980-3668.

Managing Male-Pattern Hair Loss

Male-pattern hair loss or balding is reported to be responsible for ninety-five percent of hair loss in men. The loss of hair is due to changes in the male hormone (testosterone) and can also be caused by inherited traits from a person’s relatives. Hair follicles become more sensitive to the testosterone and shrink over time, resulting in little or no hair growth. One over-the-counter solution that is applied to the scalp for hair loss is Rogaine (minoxidil). It acts by opening up the blood vessels and increasing the blood flow in the scalp, which activates hair growth. It must be applied consistently or any new growth will reportedly be lost. A prescription drug taken by mouth called Propecia (finasteride) blocks the production of the male hormone responsible for hair loss. Common side effects of finasteride are dizziness and headache. 09-21-16 - Ed’s Pharmacy - 2 x 4.5

★ LIGHTHOUSE, FROM PAGE 1 envisioned a life in ministry as a 14-year-old in the mid-1990s. He later played basketball at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. At the age of 21, he helped organize a church in Fort Wayne that grew to nearly 600 members. He moved to Houston in early 2009 to succeed retiring pastor Willie Jones at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. However, in September of that year, Jones announced he would no longer be retiring – leaving Henderson in limbo.

of Senator Cornyn, Congressman (Pete) Olson, DHS, FEMA and other agencies who ensure this program is available annually are much appreciated and deserving of recognition.” In October 2018, the Stafford City Council approved the submission of the grant application to hire six full-time firefighters to

augment its personnel – which currently includes 10 full-time, 32 part-time and 43 volunteer firefighters – to ensure adequate personnel are on-duty and available to respond to emergencies in Stafford. A goal is of the grant program is to help fire departments increase their deployment ca-

pabilities and attain 24-hour staffing, thus assuring their communities have adequate protection from fire and firerelated hazards. “Firefighters are on the front lines of keeping our communities safe, and they deserve every resource possible at their disposal,” Cornyn said in a news

release. “I applaud area leaders for their work to obtain this grant.” The grant will be paid over course of the next three years. For the first two 12-month periods, federal funds will pay for 75 percent, with 25 percent coming from the city of Stafford. During the third year, the city will pay

65 percent of the costs, while federal funds will account for the final 35 percent. The next step is requesting acceptance of the grant from the Stafford City Council. If the grant is accepted, Di Camillo anticipated new personnel beginning employment by March 2020.

“That crushed my heart and spirit and really put a damper on my confidence, because I left everything behind in Indiana that I had built through God’s help,” Henderson said. But as he was leaving the church, Henderson said a lady reached out to him and said, “God showed me you were supposed to lead my family.” The woman said her and her family would get a group together to start a church if Henderson was willing. Lighthouse Church was born from that meeting, with more than 200 people listening to Henderson preach his first message in a

tiny, sweltering room at the Humble Civic Center in October 2009. To get from that small room to a massive building in Sugar Land, however, took another twist of fate as well as a pair of fortuitous encounters.

“He saw my wife and me and told us, ‘I don’t know why, but God told me you were supposed to be ministering in Sugar Land,’ ” Henderson said. “I didn’t take it seriously at first, because I thought I was right where I needed to be.” Fast forward a few years to a cruise ship in Mexico, where Henderson met Rhema Ehiemere while they were both preaching. “I told him I wanted to open up a ministry because I believed in his gift and wanted to give him an opportunity,” Henderson said. “(Rhema) told me straight up that he lived in the Sugar Land area.” Ehiemere is now the lead

pastor for Lighthouse South. Henderson still can’t believe how things have transpired and feels Sugar Land chose him more than the other way around. And earlier this month – seven years to the date after Bismark made his statement to Henderson – Lighthouse South opened.

“This is the way of the world, and so the church must also be able to deliver its message to the front door as opposed to asking people to only walk through the doors,” Henderson said. “We have to innovate so that we may stay relevant.” Moving forward, the church will also look to offer professional counseling services for the Fort Bend area and open branches of its school and day care to service children with an education rooted in Christianity. Lighthouse South also will seek to build facilities for both recreation and community events offering prayer and financial services. It’s an expansion – and a project – Henderson never saw coming when he arrived in Houston a decade ago. But now that it’s here, he hopes to bless Fort Bend County the same way it has blessed him. “Most of the greatest things in life are not planned,” he said. “They’re part of a fortuitous set of events that are destinyinclined.”

Unexpected blessings In 2012, Henderson and his wife were vacationing in Cape Town, South Africa, where they encountered Bishop Tudor Bismark. Bismark knew the couple was in the Houston area and had heard Henderson preach before. He then offered a statement to the Hendersons.

Moving with the times Lighthouse South will offer streams of current and past sermons and services will be available online, as will Facebook Live streams of sermons as well as oneon-one video prayer chats and a free app featuring podcasts and other information about the church.

Dean Anthony Ambler said about 70 percent of graduates stay in the general area in which they study. And with efforts such as George’s recent partnership creating the county’s first technology task force, there could be more such opportunities in the coming years. “This is obviously of benefit to the economy of Sugar Land and Fort Bend as it continues to expand at an impressive rate,” Ambler said. “Being closer to the students and their families and future hiring companies means that we can adapt more readily to the changing needs of the

workforce.” The biggest benefit of the new building, Neal said, is that the recruiting and communication chain is now shorter for area companies and the school, enabling easier transitions. The school has representation on student advisory boards from the economic development agencies of Fort Bend and Sugar Land as well as from local industries. “We know we’re producing graduates that have the skill sets businesses want,” Neal said. “It really sets these students up for success, because they have a good idea of what the company is about before they even take on the job. Getting those students to

stay in the region is a win for everybody.” In a similar vein, Ambler said the university will increase its attempts to reach elementary, middle and high schools in the Fort Bend area through outreach programs and career fairs in an effort to set them up for success before they reach the college level. “We intend to be more aggressive in reaching out to show them how exciting all branches of technology are, and that they can have a lifetime career that changes every day,” Ambler said.
