Eighteen days after State Rep. Ronald Eugene Reynolds entered the Montgomery County Jail as an inmate, prisoner number 232573 penned a letter to the Fort Bend Star in response to a reporter’s letter requesting a jailhouse interview. Reynolds’ letter, dated Sept. 25, blamed racism in Montgomery County for his being incarcerated and also answered multiple queries, including how he fought being discouraged, how he could still be a voice for constituents, and if he still believed in the crimi-
nal justice system. (Editor’s note: Reynolds’ complete letter can be read in the Opinion section on page 3.) Reynolds was asked why he decided to turn himself in for the misdemeanor crimes he was convicted of in 2015. Reynolds has continually sworn his innocence and exhausted his appeals to the convictions for barratry, which is commonly called ambulance chasing. Last November, a threepanel appellate court upheld the initial decision by Montgomery County jurors that he worked with a convicted felon to solicit clients for his law firm. Texas law states that attorneys cannot contact clients
within a 30-day period of an accident. The offense is punishable by up to a year in prison. As a result of the conviction, he was not allowed to practice law and eventually filed bankruptcy since he was barred from making a living as a lawyer. On Sept. 7 the Missouri City Democrat voluntarily revoked his appeal bond and turned himself in to the Montgomery County Courts. He was taken into custody and booked, photographed for a mug shot, and given a prisoner number and sentenced to a year in jail. “To put things in perspective, I was convicted of misdemeanor – Solicitation of Professional Employment, in

Montgomery County. There is absolutely no evidence that I knowingly permitted Robert Valdez (the convicted felon) to contact accident cases within 30 days of an accident,” Reynolds states in the letter.
“To add insult to injury, I was sentenced to the maximum of 1 year in jail. Even though I had NO criminal record and a strong record of public service. While there are numerous Anglos convicted of violent felonies that receive probation and less time than me. It’s a fact that African American and Hispanics receive more harsh sentences and punishment than Anglos for the same crime,” Reynolds wrote. A cursory review by the Star of convicted Texas politicians found that Reynolds is not the first state legislator convicted of a crime. Former Texas House of Representatives Republican Joe Driver,

Superintendents report on the State of Schools By Joe Southern JSOUTHERN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Three local school superintendents gave their yearly report to the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce Wednesday at the Safari Texas Ranch during the chamber’s 11th annual State of the Schools luncheon. More than 500 people packed into the facility to hear Thomas Randle of Lamar CISD, Charles Dupre of Fort Bend ISD, and Robert Bostic of Stafford MSD talk about the accomplishments and plans for their respective districts. The following are summaries from each report:
Thomas Randle, Lamar CISD With 33,500 students, 4,900 employees, and a budget of $295 million, “We’re the number seventh fastest growing school district in the state of Texas,” Randle said. “We added over 1,000 students this past year.” “By 2022 we’re projected to have over 44,000 students. By 2027, over 55,000 students in Lamar CISD. We have over 41,000 new homes in the next decade that’s going to be built in our school district. We’re going to need 12 new elementary schools over the next decade. If you’re in the construction business, stay close! There’s a lot of work to be done,” he said.
Randle said that since 2003, voters have approved more than $1.3 billion in bonds, with the most recent being $445 million last year. Plans are under way for construction of High School No. 6, Middle School No. 6, three elementary schools, an alternative learning center, plus facility and technology upgrades and new buses. He said the new high school will be built in the booming area around Brazos Town Center. He said the district is a 5 Star school district and they are striving to model character traits at all levels. He said they will not ignore or ratio-

Jerry Parks. Classic Chevrolet in Sugar Land hosts the event each year. “Call today for a booth and a chance to win serious bragging rights,” Parks said. “Just like with the chili, we will be awarding a trophy to both our Crowd Favorite and our Judge’s Choice, chosen by honorary judges: the Johnson Development marketing team. For schools and churches, we are waiving the bake off $100 entry fee. We just ask that you bring extra cakes,
cookies and pies we can sell to benefit our Fort Bend County first responders.” For those who make a mean bowl of the official “state food” of Texas, the Chili Challenge is your challenge. “We’ve moved the Chili Challenge to the fall, hoping for some ‘chilly’ weather,” said Classic Chevy Sugar Land owner Jeff Sebastian. Chili categories include Texas Chili, Spicy Chili, Bean

It’s time for this red state to bleed a little blue Anyone who knows me well or has read my columns for any length of time knows that I am just a tad bit on the conservative side. As a journalist I strive to maintain political neutrality and afford equal access to people of all parties. My personal politics, however, run a deep red. That’s why I find it very hard to write this next sentence. It’s time for Texas to bleed a little blue. It’s been said that too much of a good thing can be bad for you and I think that holds true in politics as well. Republicans have had such a stranglehold on so many levels of government for so long that it is creating problems. Specifically, I see complacency and disenfranchisement. More than just see it, I’ve experienced it. For quite some time now Democrats have been talking about a Blue Tide this November. I think a Blue Tide would be bad for the
FAITH, FAMILY & FUN JOE SOUTHERN EDITOR
state, but a Blue Trickle is necessary to maintain a system of checks and balances. I think one of the reasons Democrats are so well organized and forceful this year is because they’ve had enough of the status quo. They’ve been put down and ignored for a long time. In the past they’ve run token campaigns against the Big Red Machine with less than marginal success. This year I see more than token campaigns. I see unity and determination among Democrats. The marquee matchup
is the U.S. Senate race between Republican Sen. Rafael “Ted” Cruz and Democrat Rep. Robert “Beto” O’Rourke. My general observation so far is that O’Rourke is running a positive, grassroots campaign that is appealing to a lot of people in this area. The Beto signs seem to outnumber the Cruz signs locally. Cruz, on the other hand, is running a negative, antiBeto campaign and seems to be relying on establishment support and the benefits of incumbency. It appears to me that his campaign is centered around tearing down his opponent rather than building on his accomplishments. I have moral issues with that approach. I still won’t vote for O’Rourke, but I’m going to have to hold my nose and pull on the hip waders to pull the lever for Cruz. On a local level, I generally support the local Republican candidates,
but I’m finding my support weakening over time. A lot of it has to do with my wife’s healthcare plan. Most people don’t know this, but Sandy has been working on a national healthcare plan ever since the Obama Administration rolled out the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). She has studied this topic and fine-tuned her plan over several years. And she knows what she’s talking about. Sandy has a master’s degree in health care administration, a nursing degree, and is employed by the UT Health in the Texas Medical Center. Her plan, in a nutshell, places the emphasis on preventive care over emergency care. Getting anyone in government to pay attention to her is nearly impossible. We did get to meet with U.S. Rep. Pete Olson at his office on Aug. 25, 2017. The meeting was interrupted by a thunderstorm that knocked
the power out. It was the first wave of storms from Hurricane Harvey, and everything we discussed was quickly forgotten. Undaunted, she has reached out to the offices of Gov. Greg Abbott, Sens. Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, and State Sen. Lois Kolkhorst. None of them has responded to her. Not even so much as an acknowledgement that they received her request. All these elected officials are Republicans. If this is how they treat people within their own party, I can just imagine what it’s like for Democrats, independents, and people of third parties. That’s why I say it might be time for this state to bleed a little blue. How can we expect to be heard if we are under the leadership of a single, large, deaf, party? Additionally, our school districts are suffering from less state funding and being tasked with more unfunded
mandates. In the last Legislative session, we heard a lot of talk from legislators going in that they supported public education, but their votes spoke otherwise. I’m looking specifically at Sen. Kolkhorst and Sen. Joan Huffman, both of whom represent parts of Fort Bend County and both of whom sit on the Senate Finance Committee. There are other issues as well, but I won’t belabor the point. To be sure, our elected officials are generally doing a good job, but without competition, they grow complacent. With a party monopoly in power the disenfranchised have nowhere to turn. As much as I love living in a deep red state, I think a little purple might do us all some good in the long run. Even the Republican Party can benefit from having a few wounds to lick. It’s through failure that we learn and grow. Success is built on failure, not monopolies.
The complete letter from jail by Rep. Reynolds (Editor’s note: Reporter Theresa D. McClellan wrote State Rep. Ron Reynolds, who is serving time in the Montgomery County Jail on a conviction for barratry, or ambulance chasing, requesting an interview. He wrote her a letter in reply and the complete text is as follows.) Theresa, I received your letter yesterday. Thanks for reaching out to me. I write this response to you with no computer to spell check, no Internet to research, nor Google. First of all, I’m in great spirits. My faith has never been stronger. What the devil meant for evil, God is using for good. To put things in perspective, I was convicted of misdemeanor – Solicitation of Professional Employment in Montgomery County. There is absolutely no evidence that I knowingly permitted Robert Valdez
to contact accident cases within 30 days of an accident. I appealed my case and lost. My attorney is currently working on the last two legal challenges to my case. Unfortunately, Montgomery County has a long history of racial discrimination and disparities within their criminal justice system. You can look at the case of Clarence Brandley for one of the cases that made national attention. To add insult to injury, I was sentenced to the maximum of 1 year in jail. Even though I had NO criminal record and a strong record of public service. While there are numerous Anglos convicted of violent felonies that receive probation and less time than me. It’s a fact that African American and Hispanics receive more harsh sentences and punishment than Anglos for the same crime.
My faith in God is strong, but my faith in our criminal justice system has diminished. My faith teaches me that “all things work together for the good of those that love the Lord are called according to his purpose,” Romans 8:28. “I’m encouraged knowing that many of God’s most faithful servants were wrongly imprisoned including the Apostle Paul, Joseph, Peter, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently stated, “the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands during moments of comfort and convenience, but during times of challenge and controversy.” I am more determined and committed than ever to fight for my constituents and those unjustly treated within the criminal justice system. I decided to surrender
my appeal bond so that I could serve my time and be out before the start of the 86th Legislative session. I get out on Jan. 4, 2019, and the session starts on Jan. 8, 2019. I also chose this period because the holiday season is November and December and things slow down so that I wouldn’t miss much in my district. My constituents have been extremely supportive of me during this difficult time. Many have written, posted on social media and called my family to express their support. I’m so blessed to have such a supportive family, friends and constituents. They know that I’m a strong man of faith that has been a dedicated, faithful public
servant for our community for decades. Despite the naysayers who have always tried to smear my name, I remain confident, positive and committed to being an humble servant doing God’s will! I have a renewed spirit and sense of purpose to be a change agent. I will continue to speak truth to power and fight to have affordable healthcare, adequate funding for our public schools, gun control reform, jobs, equal pay for equal work and criminal justice reforms. The fate of my law license has not been determined and is still in jeopardy. Regardless of the outcome, I will continue to be a voice of the voiceless
and for the least, last and lost. I believe that “a setback is a setup for a comeback.” I’m not bitter, I’m better. My outlook on life has never been greater. I’m blessed to have my health, strength, a sound mind and the most supportive wife, children and constituents. I intend to use my experience to highlight the continued racial inequities within our criminal justice systems. This will make me a stronger advocate and provide hope to others through my testimony. I believe that God is not finished with me yet and the very best is yet to come! Sincerely, Ron Reynolds
Letters to the Editor Keep Blue Ridge Landfill open Dear Editor, It has come to my attention that the city of Pearland is attempting to shut down the Blue Ridge Landfill. This is startling news for multiple reasons. First, Pearland is in Brazoria County – the landfill is in Fort Bend County. What right do they have to interfere with our businesses? Second, many municipalities in Fort Bend that are not as well off as Pearland residents and depend on the Blue Ridge Landfill (one of the largest in Texas) as a considerable source of tax revenue. So a num-
ber of wealthy people built houses near the landfill, didn’t like how it smelled, and then decided to try and shut it down without thinking how that might affect other communities? Not too surprising. Third, guess who this action is going to affect most? Folks living paycheck-topaycheck who can barely afford to pay their bills as they are. Now we have to pay for rising trash fees because Pearland decided to build their new milliondollar homes next to our landfill? Why isn’t Pearland focusing on any number of
the other environmental issues that could actually be harmful to their health? Instead, they have ignored the surplus of environmental hazards that surround them in their own county and have hired law firms to shut down a major business in a separate county. I hope Pearland will take a step back and think carefully about their actions before deciding to move forward with this. The Blue Ridge Landfill serves and affects far more than just Pearland. Thank you. Esteban L. Suarez Richmond
Election a time to bring change to Missouri City Dear Editor, The election results next month in Missouri City are very likely to make huge changes in the governance of our town. One of Missouri City’s most pressing goals is to promote commercial growth so that the city’s tax base will increase. Voters can play a key role in this by choosing elected officials who will provide innovation and initiative in this effort. Newly elected officials will need to ensure that Missouri City continues to be a community rated as one of the more progressive and safer places to live in Texas. The new city council and mayoral candidates understand growth as a priority and many use it as a key part of their platform. A major reason for an aggressive attitude toward development in Missouri City is that we very much need new businesses that pay both property and sales taxes. One of the incumbents seeking office touts that during his administration a large amount of “taxable property” has been brought into the city’s jurisdiction.
He really can’t say that new tax sources have been established because many of these new businesses don’t pay property or sales taxes due to tax abatement (incentive) agreements or because they are wholesalers and pay no sales taxes. Missouri City will need elected officials who are serious about increasing the town’s real tax base and bringing in new businesses that we all can enjoy. Missouri City has publicized that the city is one of the most diverse and inclusive of any city anywhere. But, the city council is composed of all men and only one woman. Is that supposed to be inclusive and representative? What residents can do about this is look seriously at the female candidates for city council and mayor and their platforms and qualifications. For women to have their views and opinions considered is an important matter and obviously women can relate to their own segment of the population better than men. This is a great opportunity too for women to change the demeanor of the city council. We need a
kinder and gentler Missouri City Council and electing women would substantially help that situation. Even more significant, the female candidates we have running for mayor and city council are eminently qualified. We have business owners, an attorney, a city planning expert, and a non-profit manager, all with degrees and advanced degrees. Let’s upgrade our city council and make it more diverse and inclusive, just like our town. Lastly, Missouri City has become a town of young families with one of their main focuses being on a family lifestyle. Golf is a good sport but our town has many other appealing traits. Most importantly, we need to advertise that Missouri City is a vibrant, progressive suburb of Houston, not a retirement community focused on golf. Please read for yourself the platforms of the city council candidates and decide for yourself whether their future picture of the city is in accord with your own. Howard E. Moline Missouri City

Travis comes way back to beat Dulles 54-51 By Bill McCaughey FOR THE FORT BEND STAR
Travis came back from a 32-14 halftime deficit to beat Dulles 54-51 last Thursday at Mercer Stadium. The Tigers stormed back in the third quarter to take a 39-38 lead with 1:36 to go in the third quarter. Dulles quickly responded with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Peters to Cord’Dric Walton to get back the lead at 45-39 at the end of the third quarter. With 5:59 to go in the game, Kaelen Shankle scored on a 6-yard run to put Travis up 47-45. The Vikings, however, were not finished as Peters scored on a 3-yard run to reclaim the lead 51-47 with 4:24 to go in the game. Travis then marched down the field, and with 1:32 to go in the game, Shankle scored on a 10-yard run to put Travis up 54-51. Dulles then began what they hoped would be the game-winning drive, but on a third down and eight play with 58 seconds to go, Travis cornerback intercepted a pass and the Tigers ran out the clock. “I knew they were going to throw to number 1 (Ainias Smith). He’s their best receiver. So, I just knew they were going to him. I was able to get on top of him and make a play on the ball. My teammate, Parker Washington, had good coverage on that play and I think he tipped the ball to me,” defensive back Cameron Oliver said. Washington had a career night for the Tigers, catching 12 passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns. “I really want more games like this. I keep striving for more. I couldn’t do it without my quarterback (Eric Rodriguez) and my teammates. I was just trying to get anything I could get,” Washington said. Even though Travis trailed 32-14 at halftime, the Tigers were confident coming out for the third quarter. “We just said we need to get our minds focused and go out there and do what we do. It was a pretty rough first half, but we got it together. We got our team together
and we were ready for the second half,” Washington said. Middle linebacker Zach Zimos, who had 13 tackles, including 9 solo tackles, didn’t think there was a lot of concern in the locker room at halftime. “We knew what they were doing, their strengths and weaknesses. We just had to come out in the second half and execute. Adversity goes a long way, so I am excited to see what this season holds,” Zimos said. During the halftime Travis Homecoming program, Zimos was named Homecoming King. Captain and center Justin Gwalchmai thought the Tigers won the battle in the trenches. “The offensive line did pretty good. After we talked about it in the locker room, we came back in the second half and dominated. I just felt we did really good, but we can play better. We just stuck with our game plan. They are a really good team and a really good opponent. They came out and did their stuff, but I think we wanted it a little more,” Gwalchmai said. Travis quarterback Erick Rodriguez completed 17 of 31 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns, and Shankle rushed 12 times for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Dulles quarterback Cameron Peters completed 13 of 23 passes for 300 yards and five touchdowns. Cord’Dric Walton caught six passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns and Ainias Smith had four catches for 29 yards and one touchdown. Myles Heard rushed 22 times for 174 yards and one touchdown. “Our kids settled down at halftime, caught their breaths, and refocused on the job at hand,” Travis head coach Trey Sissom said. “Special teams made some big plays to start the second half with onside recoveries that got momentum in our favor. Offensively, we ran the ball much better in the second half behind the efforts of Kaelen Shankle and Aundre Smith. Parker Washington
physical football right from the first whistle. We still have a lot to work on and get better at, but that is what the regular season is all about. Our goal is to get better each week and I believe the team is focused on that goal,” Marshall head coach James Williams said. Willowridge was led by Vaughnte Frederick, who rushed 29 times for 121 yards and one touchdown and completed 18 of 31 passes for 137 yards and one touchdown.

showed just how special a player he really is, and our defense made just enough stops to seal the win. Defensive back Cameron Oliver rebounded after two first half breakdowns to secure the win with a huge interception.” Bush 63, Kempner 39 Bush remained undefeated as they beat Kempner 63-39 last Thursday at Hall Stadium. The Broncos jumped to a 35-15 first quarter lead and never let Kempner get close despite the Cougars rushing for 414 yards. Bush was led by Donte and Demetrice Jones, who combined for 144 rushing yards and four touchdowns. Kempner’s Jordan Shelton rushed 25 times for 306 yards and five touchdowns. Ridge Point 49, Austin 24
The Ridge Point Panthers were up 28-0 at the end of the first quarter and raced to a 49-24 win over Austin last Saturday at Mercer Stadium. Panthers’ running back John Norman scored three touchdowns as he rushed for 78 yards on 10 carries. Quarterback Will Pendergrass completed 11 of 16 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown. Austin quarterback Tre Larsen completed 21 of 36 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns, all of which were caught by AJ Hanse who had nine receptions for 133 yards. “This is another total team effort. Our offensive line, Nick Wilson-Haymond, Chace Fleming, Collin Sharp, Troy Cavazos, Caleb Rodkey, Kyle Schultz and Aaron Molina, is really starting to come around and play better each week,” Ridge Point
head coach Brett Sniffen said. “Kicker Kyle Ramsey is proving to be a force on special teams as well with his kickoffs going out the back of the end zone.” Marshall 61, Willowridge 27 The Buffaloes raced to a 34-7 halftime lead and rolled to a 61-27 win over Willowridge last Friday at Hall Stadium. Marshall’s Korey King had three touchdowns, first on a 27-yard pass from Malik Hornsby, then on an 80-yard kickoff return, and finally on an 87-yard pass from Hornsby. Jerry Davis rushed eight times for 132 yards and a touchdown, Devon Achane had six carries for 112 yards and a touchdown, and Hornsby had nine carries for 41 yards and two touchdowns. “I am proud of the team for coming right out and playing
Elkins 42, Clements 7 Clements was in front 7-6 at the end of the first quarter, but Elkins stormed back to beat the Rangers, 42-7 last Friday night at Mercer Stadium. Elkins’ quarterback Cameron George completed 11 of 16 passes for 215 yards and three touchdowns, and he rushed six times for 59 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Granson caught two passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Xavier McIntyre had 16 tackles including nine solo tackles, and Bryce Bradley had 12 tackles and two sacks. Clements’ quarterback John Perry completed 11 of 17 passes for 71 yards and one touchdown. Angleton 14, Hightower 13 Angleton’s Kendall Archie scored the game winning touchdown on a 10-yard run with four minutes to go in the game to give Angleton a 1413 win over Hightower last Friday at Angleton. Hightower’s Chantz Ceaser led the Hurricanes’ offense as he scored on a 10-yard run and a 20-yard pass. This Week On Thursday, Clements plays Dulles at Mercer Stadium and Marshall plays Waltrip at Hall Stadium. On Friday, Austin plays Travis at Mercer Stadium, Willowridge plays at Northside, and Hightower plays Texas City at Hall Stadium. On Saturday, Bush plays Ridge Point at Mercer Stadium and Elkins plays Kempner at Hall Stadium.
Texans drive late in overtime to beat Dallas, 19-16 By Bill McCaughey FOR THE FORT BEND STAR
The Houston Texans beat the Dallas Cowboys 19-16 in front of the largest home crowd (72,008) in Texans’ history last Sunday night at NRG Stadium. The Texans relied on their stars in overtime. The Cowboys had the first possession in overtime but decided to punt on fourth and one at the Texans’ 42 yard line. Starting at their 10-yard line, Houston moved the ball to the 24-yard line where Deshaun Watson hit DeAndre Hopkins for 49 yards, putting the ball at the Dallas 24 yard line. “It was man-to-man and Deshaun (Watson) put the ball on the money, so I could catch it. (Bill) O’Brien called the perfect play to give me
the opportunity to win the game,” Hopkins said. “I mean that’s D-hop (Hopkins). He’s a playmaker. He’s one of the best – if not the best – receivers in the NFL, so we rely on him. In those situations, he came up big, and playmakers make plays whenever we need them,” Watson said. “That was a situation where we needed to make a play and I threw it up for him to make a play and he did what he had to do. He did a great job of getting us down there into field goal range and making sure that he protected the ball and he did what he did.” Three plays later Ka’imi Fairbairn kicked a 36-yard field goal to give the Texans their second win of the season. Fairbairn also had field goals of 20, 21, and 19 yards. “(We had) a lot of ups and downs, you know every
game’s like that. You got to roll with the punches, you know I missed early. We were able to bounce back, and I’m glad we got the job done,” Fairbairn said. Hopkins’ big catch and run made up for a fumble earlier in the game. “Yeah, DeAndre’s a playmaker, he’s a great player, we’re always trying to get the ball in his hands. He came right up to me (after his fumble). He said, ‘I’ll make up for that.’ He came right up to me right after that play and he said, ‘Coach, I’ll make up for that’. Then, obviously he did,” Texans’ head coach Bill O’Brien said. The Texans would not have found themselves in overtime if they had been able to score when they reached the 20 yard line, the red zone. For the game, they scored one touchdown out of the six times they were
in the red zone. Even worse, they only scored one touchdown out of the five times when they had a first and goal situation. “Yeah, it’s bad. We got to get better. It’s just we tried everything down there, nothing really worked. So, we got to go back as a coaching staff and look at it, players, everybody. We all have to look at it and see what we can do to be better, because we’re moving the ball. We move the ball pretty well, but when we get down in there, we got to score touchdowns. Once tonight, we came away with no points, twice, whatever. So, we got to get better there,” O’Brien said. The Texans lone touchdown came in the second quarter when rookie receiver Keke Coutee caught a 1-yard pass from Watson. For the game, Watson

(281) 499-4555 TREATMENT FOR CHILDHOOD EAR INFECTIONS
Ear infections occur very commonly during childhood, particularly in the first 2 to 4 years of life. Children who are bottle-fed, attend daycare, or are exposed to cigarette smoke may be at an increased risk of an ear infection. Otitis media is the medical term for middle ear inflammation. Acute otitis media is an ear infection in which fluid, or pus, accumulates in the middle ear. Symptoms of this type of ear infection include eardrum redness, pain, and fever. Irritability, decreased appetite, trouble sleeping, and mild temporary hearing loss are other signs of a possible ear infection. Middle ear infections sometimes resolve within 2 to 3 days without medical treatment. However, antibiotics may be prescribed for 5 to 10 days of treatment, depending on the individual child. Antibiotics will not get rid of fluid in the ear and will only minimally reduce pain. For these reasons, along with many others, doctors may recommend pain relieving medications and wait to see if the infection resolves in a few days before prescribing antibiotics. Nonprescription pain relievers and fever reducers, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, may be given to alleviate the discomfort associated with an ear infection. Antibiotics are more likely to be prescribed for children with more severe or recurrent ear infections.

BUNION SOCKS Manufacturers are producing podiatric socks that are designed to help people who have painful bunions. While these socks are not meant to cure bunions, they can be worn to reduce some of the associated foot pain. Since a bunion is a bony bump that protrudes from the side of the big toe joint, it is easily irritated by pressure and friction inside a shoe. Bunion socks are made from acrylic fibers that cause less friction than cotton fibers. The socks have extra padding to protect the sensitive skin over the bunion. Some socks even have a cushioned toe pocket that encases the big toe. The pocket promotes better toe alignment by separating the big toe from its adjacent toe. HINT: Padded socks take up extra room in shoes, so be sure to wear socks when trying on shoes. Longer or wider shoes may be needed to accommodate the added thickness. Next month is American Diabetes Month, conceived to communicate the seriousness of the disease and the importance of proper diabetes control. We’ve seen the results of untreated and self-treated diabetic foot problems, and we cannot advise strongly enough for diabetics to seek professional care. Whether you are dealing with diabetes-related problems or feet that just hurt, we hope you’ll call us for an appointment at 281980-3668, 3143 Hwy. 6 South.

#trending Heal + hy Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital introduces program to prevent amputations From staff reports FOR THE FORT BEND STAR
Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is creating
a multi-disciplinary service to help patients avoid limb amputation due to severe vascular disease and wounds in the foot or leg. The new Limb Salvage
Program enables specialists from the hospital’s Wound Care Program and its cardiovascular and general surgery services to coordinate and expedite the diagnosis and treatment of patients who have wounds in the foot or leg, or ulcers due to diabetes or vascular disease. Foot and lower leg amputations are a serious health issue in the United States, with more than 180,000 performed each year. About half of the major amputations are performed without any prior diagnostic evaluation. Amputation patients face
an increased risk of depression, significantly higher lifetime medical costs and high revision or re-amputation rates. In fact, statistics show that 5-10 percent of below-knee amputees – and 15-20 percent of above-knee amputees – die in the hospital following their procedures. “The majority of these amputations are not the result of trauma; they become necessary after patients suffer infection and severe tissue loss due to inadequate blood flow caused by damage to blood vessels from diabetes or blockages caused by vas-
cular disease,” said Dr. Charlie Cheng, a boardcertified vascular surgeon with Houston Methodist Cardiovascular Surgery Associates and the director of the Limb Salvage Program. “Skin tissue requires adequate blood flow to heal properly, and for patients with diabetes or an underlying vascular issue, even a small cut or scrape on the foot or leg can quickly become serious because there simply isn’t enough blood flow to the wound to allow healing,” he said. “For these patients, time is of the essence, and getting

Q: A:
Why do I sometimes feel fatigued after socializing with family and friends?
Studies show that older adults expend more energy in listening AuD, FAAA situations when compared Terry Snook to younger adults. Listening requires more attention and more cognitive resources and as a result becomes more difficult. With hearing loss staying engaged in conversation demands even higher concentration, further increasing the work or the “cognitive load” of the brain. Today’s advanced technology used in hearing devices minimize the extra effort that people with hearing loss need to participate in conversation and engage in other everyday activities. The newest technological advances enhance the ability to hear in even the most difficult listening environments such as noisy restaurants or social gatherings. For active adults, new hearing instruments also offer wireless connectivity that allows audio from mobile and landline phone, TV and other entertainment devices to stream directly into the user’s hearing device. There is no reason for people to allow untreated hearing loss to make it difficult to keep up with conversation or to join in everyday activities. With a variety of hearing instruments available today, there is a solution to benefit every type of hearing loss.

the proper diagnosis and treatment quickly can be the difference between recovering from a wound or losing their toe, foot or leg.” Cheng said that for many patients, simply treating the wound itself without restoring blood flow to the affected limb is not enough. Through the Limb Salvage Program, wound patients immediately receive diagnostic ultrasound studies to evaluate for arterial and/ or venous disease in the affected limb. If necessary, they are promptly scheduled for treatment, such as an arteriogram and endovascular procedures for balloon and stenting, open surgical bypass, or venous interventions. The entire process – from initial visit to revascularization – can now be completed within a few days rather than weeks or months, thereby saving valuable time. Once blood flow is restored, physicians with the Houston Methodist Wound Care Program at Sugar Land continue to help the patient with a variety of leading-edge treatments, including compression wraps, antimicrobial dressings, bioengineered skin substitutes and hyperbaric oxygen therapy, Cheng said. Patients typically benefit from a dramatic improvement in their wound once revascularization is complete and reduce their risk of further wound development. While patients with diabetes are often instructed to take special precautions with their feet and legs, individuals with vascular issues may not recognize they have an issue until they develop a wound or ulcer that won’t heal, Cheng said. These recommended changes do not change the character of our existing zoning districts or City, modify requirements for multi-family, or remove safeguards that are currently in place. Rather, they enhance the quality of life for our residents and businesses by permitting additional compatible uses, placing additional restrictions and regulations on certain uses, and continuing to protect single-family residential neighborhoods from undesirable encroachment. this time, I have practiced in Fort Bend, Montgomery, Harris, Brazoria, Galveston, Jefferson and other counties in and around Houston. Having this experience in various courts, I have seen what works and does not work. I can bring effective and efficient changes to the county court system that will positively impact the residents of Fort Bend County. When a Fort Bend County resident is in front of the court, whether by choice or otherwise, I believe they are looking for a swift and fair resolution for their issue and to be treated justly. In order to provide this, I am committed to the following: 1. Reducing backlog and ensure that cases are automatically set for hearings and trials once pleadings

Allowing for submission hearing through written pleadings, rather than mandatory attorney appearances thereby benefitting their clients in saving attorney fees. 3. Collaborate and meet with the constituents in this County and the attorneys that practice in this court on a regular basis to ensure that concerns are addressed properly and appropriately. square miles we are surrounded by some of the largest school districts in the state and I would say even in the nation, which makes it really, really competitive in order to get resources, in order to get teachers, in order to keep technical folks that come in and out of our schools,” he said. “Stafford is 3,700 kids and about 500 employees and some of the best people in America that you’ve ever met.” Bostic talked about the district’s record bond issue of $62 million approved last year. Although that may be small by the standard of the other districts, there are only 18,000 residents in Stafford. “What makes Stafford really happen are people,” he said. “That’s what makes it happen. Our teachers are rock stars and our staff are rock stars.” Being a small district means everybody does more than one job. “Everybody, including the superintendent, does two, three, six, eight, 10 things,” he said. Observing that the district scored a B on the state’s controversial grading system, Bostic
said they will do better. “We go a B, so what? We’re going to raise that, too,” he said. “No one comes to school and says, hey, let me give you my second or third best.” He talked about their philosophy of Keep it 100. “Some people would say 97 percent of our kids did well. At least 3 percent of those kids didn’t do well. But those 3 percent are 100 percent of somebody’s child,” he said. “We want 100 percent of our third-graders to read on or above grade level, no excuses. We want 100 percent of our seventh-graders to take the ACT. We want 100 percent of our eighth-graders to take the PSAT. That’s what we want. We want 100 percent of our 10th graders to take the SAT or TSI. Finally in 12th grade, we want 100 percent of our kids to be able to graduate college or career ready.” Bostic gave the example of Stafford High School’s principal being a Stafford graduate 20 years ago. “Our goal is that our students and staff are ready to lead boldly in the world of tomorrow,” heT:10” said.

Needville Harvest Festival seeking sponsors From staff reports FOR THE FORT BEND STAR
The time to celebrate Needville Harvest Festival’s 35th anniversary is near, with the event set for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 19-20. Established in 1983, the Harvest Fest kicked off with a bang as large crowds gathered in the downtown area for lots of food, fun, and family-friendly events. After several years, continued growth necessitated
a move to the 16-acre Harvest Park, located at 3001 Violet St., where nearly 5,000 now attend the annual event. Organizers said that in order to make the festival a continual success, sponsors are always needed, as is community support. President Chris Janicek said sponsors are listed on all event information and advertisement, and are spotlighted at a dinner in their honor the first night of the festival each year. “We’re counting on our
sponsors to help us make this year’s event our best one yet,” said Janicek. Needville Harvest Festival, Inc., is a non-profit organization that raises funds for current and longrange projects for Harvest Park, which is utilized by the entire community. All proceeds from the Harvest Festival are used for the development and maintenance of the park and for scholarships for graduating Needville High School seniors. Among the most recent
improvements to the park are: a paved roadway that winds through the facility; restroom and building expansions, including a large, covered pavilion; a playground with benches; the addition of covered picnic tables and barbecue pits; lights for the pathway and parking lot; and more. Plans for future improvements include additional playground area and equipment, and another covered pavilion. In order to make that happen, Janicek said sponsors and attendance by
the general public are vital. “The Harvest Festival is two big days of fun and excitement for all,” he said. “From the barbecue cook-off to family-friendly activities, the Harvest Fest has something for everyone.” Opening day events this year include a barbecue cook-off and judging, and continues the following day with a fun run, more than 60 craft and food vendors, a talent show, Little Miss and Mr. contest, Texas Outdoors displays, a kite
exhibition, queen’s contest, a live auction, Bayou Boys shrimp supper, a Halloween costume contest, and much more. The ever-popular Kidz Zone features everything from pony rides to David Gish’s Wonder Show. Lawn mower races always provide plenty of excitement, and raffle prizes include a John Deere Gator and a Gravely lawnmower. For more information, contact Janicek at chris. janicek@yahoo.com or 281-468-9314.

H CHILI, FROM PAGE 1 Chili and Specialty Chili. Teams need to submit a $100 entry fee per category or tent space (fees for first responder teams are waived). Don’t forget to decorate booths for a chance to win the coveted Spirit Award trophy. With many competitors there will be plenty of chili and dessert samples for everyone to try. “That’s right,” Parks said. “This is a family event. For $2/ticket or $5/family, you can come out and eat all the chili you want, topping it off with homemade desserts sampled from our bake off.
H REYNOLDS, FROM PAGE 1 who served from 1993 to 2013 on the state Appropriations and Public Safety Committee, admitted in 2010 to years of double billing the Texas House for expenses that had already been paid to him by his own campaign fund to the tune of more than $50,000, following an investigation by the Associated Press. He pled guilty to a third-degree felony of abuse in his official capacity as a state lawmaker as a consequence of the double billing. He was fined $5,000 and given five years probation. The maximum penalty for the crime is 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. According to state newspapers and Wikipedia, Driver’s plea bargain allowed him to keep his voting rights in the legislature, avoid being a convicted felon and collect his state retirement of $57,000 a year when he retired as a legislator in 2013. Carlos “Charlie” Uresti was a Democratic State Senator and State Representative from the San Antonio area from 1997 until his resignation in 2018. Following an FBI investigation, Uresti was found guilty last February of 11 federal felony charges related to his alleged involvement in a Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. He was sentenced three months ago to 12 years in federal prison. Since Reynolds faces misdemeanor charges, he can keep his state position. He is running unopposed in the Nov. 6
Don’t forget to bring a pocket full of dollars to vote for your favorites. Remember, 100 percent of what we collect goes directly to our first responders, our heroes.” Those heroes – like Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls, EMS Chief Graig Temple and Richmond Fire Chief Michael Youngblood – will also be engaging in four-way tug-of-war contests, rock wall climbing and the demolition of a car with sledgehammers. “You are all welcome to join our first responders in these unique and challenging activities,” Parks said. “We’ll also have carnival food, live music, and fun games – including a game truck – for the kids. There will be fire trucks,
police cruisers, ambulances and SWAT units on site. This is can’t miss fun!” Classic Chili Challenge and Dessert Bake Off honorees and beneficiaries include: Behind the Badge, police and fire/EMS departments from Sugar Land, Missouri City, Stafford, Richmond, Rosenberg, and Meadows Place, along with the sheriff and constable departments of Fort Bend County. “My wife Tiffany and I are excited to again be a part of this event that benefits the men and women in our community committed to keeping our families and businesses safe and sound,” Sebastian said. “We look forward to seeing all of you on October 13.”
election. Reynolds said his attorney is working on the last two legal challenges of his case but he also noted, “Unfortunately, Montgomery County has a long history of racial discrimination and disparities within their criminal justice system. You can look at the case of Clarence Bradley for one of the cases that made national attention.” Brandley is the black high school janitor who was framed, convicted and placed on death row in 1980 for the rape and murder of a 16-year-old visiting white female athlete whose body was found stuffed in the loft of a Conroe High School auditorium days before classes started. Because he was black, Montgomery County law officials hid or lost evidence that pointed to white suspects. He was exonerated just days before he was set to be executed by the state, attracting attention from “60 Minutes” and other national news organizations. Books were written about the case and his case was highlighted in the National Registry
of Exonerations, a project of multiple law schools, including Michigan State, University of Michigan and the University of California. Brandley never received an apology or compensation from the state. He died of pneumonia Sept. 2. in Montgomery County. Reynolds said in his letter that he decided to turn himself in so he can serve his time and be out before the start of the 86th legislative session. He said he gets out Jan. 4, 2019, and the session starts on Jan. 8. “I’m encouraged knowing that many of God’s most faithful servants were wrongly imprisoned including the Apostle Paul, Joseph, Peter, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela,” he wrote. “As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. eloquently stated, ‘the ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands during moments of comfort and convenience, but during times of challenge and controversy.’ I am more determined and committed than ever to fight for my constituents and those unjustly treated within the criminal justice system,” said Reynolds.
