It’s possible there will still be a Nehls leading one of Fort Bend County’s crime-fighting offices following the next election cycle. It just wouldn’t be the one most residents have become accustomed to seeing. Last week, Fort Bend County Precinct 4 Constable Trever Nehls’ campaign team announced he would forgo another term as con-
stable to potentially make a run as the next Fort Bend County Sheriff on the Republican ticket. His twin brother Troy Nehls currently holds the sheriff position, but announced earlier this year that he would not seek another term as he considers a run for the District 22 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, which Pete Olson will vacate at the end of his current term. Trever Nehls is currently serving as a colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves and is not expected back stateside until early 2020,
according to reports. “I am honored to help my brother while he’s serving overseas in defense of our country,” Troy Nehls said last week in a statement on behalf of his brother. “I will continue to encourage my brother to run for Sheriff of Fort Bend County. He has the skill set, experience and proven servant leadership. He would make an excellent sheriff.” The filing deadline for candidates in the 2020 elections is Dec. 9, with primaries set for March 3, 2020.

New details emerge in area store clerk shooting From Staff Reports
Some new revelations have come to light about the events leading up to the shooting death of a Sugar Land convenience store clerk during an Aug. 31 robbery. The Sugar Land Police Department said 24-year-old Treveon James Young of Dallas is suspected of pulling the trigger in the incident, during which multiple suspects got away with nearly $1,300 according to media reports. Young is now listed among the Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers’ most wanted suspects, according to a report from the Houston Chronicle, and police previously said he may be hiding in the Houston or Dallas area. Court records say Young allegedly planned the attempted robbery, choosing that particular store due to the lack of a security window around the cash register area according to the report. On the night of the incident, officers responded to WB Food Mart at 13003 West Bellfort St. around 8:30 p.m. after customers reported a man, later identified as 63-year-old store

Harvey Baker Jr. just wants to follow his dreams and his older sister’s footsteps. The 11-year-old Sugar Land resident has gotten a rare opportunity to advance his dream of stardom while learning from some famous names in the music industry – with some family help along the way. Baker, a sixth grader at Garcia Middle School in Sugar Land, has spent the last year recording songs and music videos as one of the newest members of Acapop! KIDS a cappella group.
Comprised of 25 students ages 10-14 and founded by Pentatonix co-founder Scott Hoying, Grammy Award-winning arranger and producer Ben Bram and Pentatonix manager Jonathan Kalter along with creative director, a cappella arranger and producer Shams Ahmed, the group partnered with Warner Records to officially launch the first two videos from their 10-song album on Oct. 18 “We’ve worked really hard on this first album and I’m excited for everyone to hear it. I still don’t believe this is happening,” Harvey said. “This is such an amazing opportunity and I’m blessed I was picked.”
Harvey said his love of music and performance was cultivated and inspired by his 20-year-old sister, Kaylah Sharve’ Baker, a member of a cappella group Citizen Queen. His road to Acapop! KIDS, however, is all his own. It began last summer with a grueling audition process. More than 1,000 students from around the country had to make it through three rounds of auditions – two by videotape performing a song of their choice, and a final in-person audition in Dallas. Harvey is involved in

FBISD to pilot campus-based mental health clinics By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Steve Shiels
Several local schools could soon have counseling and resource centers that will be the first of their kind. Fort Bend ISD announced during an Oct. 21 board meeting that is has received a $1.5 million grant from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s Criminal Justice Division to pilot
eight school-based mental health centers around district campuses within the Hightower, Marshall and Willowridge high school feeder patterns under the Victims of Crime Act of 1984 (VOCA). The grant will be used to cover the cost of the mental health clinics’ startup as well as the services provided by clinic staff. It is part of the district’s restructured behavioral health services efforts, according to FBISD.
FBISD began planning for the grant following an August 2018 meeting with State Rep. Rick Miller that showcased such clinics in Austin, and applied for the grant this past February. “We will pilot these programs beginning in those feeder patterns, and then seek to expand them district-wide over the course of the next three years,” FBISD Director of Behavioral Health and Wellness Steve Shiels said during the meeting.
All FBISD students, parents and staff who have been victims of crimes – domestic violence, witnesses to a crime, those impacted by crime and victims of bullying and more – will be eligible to receive free counseling and therapeutic services from board-licensed clinicians when the centers open next year.

others’ quality of life. The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston recently presented its annual Charity in Action Award to Sugar Land resident and volunteer Christiane Galvan at the organization’s annual meeting. Galvan was honored for her work with the Catholic Charities’ Refugee Resettlement Program, which welcomes and assists newcomers to the United States as they begin life in a new culture, helping refugees and other government-approved new arrivals achieve economic self-sufficiency. Part of Galvan’s job with the program included tutoring individuals in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. She tutored one Burmese refugee for almost one year, preparing him for his citizenship test – which he passed – before attending his oath ceremony. “Christiane is tireless, patient and encouraging with clients,” Cynthia N. Colbert, president and CEO of Catholic Charities, said in a news release. “All of the clients she meets are grateful for her time and assistance.”

Forget ‘playing the right way,’ just enjoy this Astros’ spectacle Let me preface this column by reiterating that my love for baseball and Astros fandom can be traced back to around my middle school days in the mid-2000s. One of the men donning those ghastly brick red jerseys they wore back then, Hall of Famer Craig Biggio, to this day remains my alltime favorite Astro. I played the way I did – hustling out every grounder, catching every pop fly with two hands – not necessarily because coaches drilled the practice into my skull, but because I saw its practical application in action. Jeff Bagwell is still the greatest Astro in the franchise’s 58-year history, though second baseman Jose Altuve may knock on the door in about a decade. Watching that duo made up much of my childhood fandom. But with all due re-
Landan Kuhlmann LEAD REPORTER
spect to the two faces of the franchise and what they accomplished, this is the most fun crop of Astros to watch in franchise history. No longer do I follow the team solely for their win/loss record. The men behind the uniforms are entertainingly eclectic, and the most joyful group I’ve ever seen. It’s not even close, and won’t likely ever be topped, at least during my lifetime, and we need to enjoy it while it lasts. I say that not just be-
cause of the winning, which has seen them become just the eighth team in MLB history to win 100 or more games in three straight seasons and make two World Series appearances in those three years. No, what makes this current crop of Astros what I believe to be the most beloved – and interesting – group in the franchise’s history is the simultaneous collection of both talent and personality, melded together for a concoction so perfectly suited for this city and for baseball as a whole. It sits in such stark contrast to the era of baseball I grew up watching in middle school, yet I can’t get enough. Personalities ranging from All-Star and current MVP candidate Alex Bregman’s brash cockiness to
new outfielder Michael Brantley’s perpetual curmudgeonly scowl, from George Springer moonlighting as DJ Funky Fresh to Jose Altuve’s workmanlike hitting clinics that eventually give way to a smile lighting up a room, the temperaments around the team are endless. You’ve even got outfielder Josh Reddick’s WWE obsession leading to championship belts for the player of the game last season as well as Bregman and first baseman Yuli Gurriel’s Euro step celebration following each win. What’s more, the players’ personalities rub off on each other, and bonds the players. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a crop of players this close for any team in my life, and that’s 100 percent because of their efforts
to make themselves accessible. Always seemingly the ticked off elder statesman at the beginning, the personality of Brantley – who the team has given the moniker “Uncle Mike” – has gradually begun to shine through. From his stoicism has burst forth the occasional smirk, and even a smile from time to time, though the occurrence has been rarer than a Gerrit Cole loss for much of the season. There’s even an anecdote of how he trolled fellow outfielder Jake Marisnick with a season-long prank, constantly swiping the hats he’d wear to the ballpark and convincing Marisnick they’d been lost before playfully returning them all to him in a box at the end of the season. The reason? Payback for a Marisnick stunt during
Spring Training, specifics of which are in the wind. “I don’t remember what you did,” Brantley said in an article on The Athletic. “But here’s your hats back.” Go back a few more years, and you’d remember another anecdote that has been circulated. When Gurriel first came to the United States in 2016 after playing 15 seasons overseas, he was reserved, unsure of how he fit in with the clubhouse and sticking to the Spanish-speaking players in the locker room. As the story goes, none other than Bregman was one of the first to come over and greet him – and speaking to him in Spanish. Bregman first took Spanish

Managing Graves’ Disease
Graves’ disease is an autoimmune disease that leads to an abnormal release of hormones from the thyroid gland. An autoimmune disease causes the body’s immune system to attack healthy cells. Thyroid hormones help control how the body uses energy. When a large amount of thyroid hormones are produced, heart rate and other body functions, such as food digestion, speed up. This leads to the symptoms of Graves’ disease which include trouble resting, irritability, anxiousness, shaky hands, and frequent bowel movements. Factors such as genetics, stress, and infections may increase the risk of being diagnosed with Graves’ disease. Antithyroid medications, such as methimazole and propylthiouracil, may help manage symptoms of Graves’ disease. Methimazole and propylthiouracil work to decrease the amount of hormones the thyroid makes. Side effects of both drugs include itching, dizziness, and an upset stomach. Methimazole and propylthiouracil may be taken with food or milk to help minimize feelings of stomach upset.

But never before had he dived headfirst into something close to the magnitude of Acapop! KIDS. “At first was I was nervous,” he said. “Because when I saw I was performing in front of them, it was like, ‘Oh my goodness it’s them,’ since they’re famous.” His mother, Shannon Baker, shared the sentiment as her son made his
way through the gauntlet before emerging as one of the chosen few. “These people are huge – people know who Pentatonix are. It was scary for me, too,” she said. “But this is something that’s his dream and he wants to pursue. To see it happen for him is just amazing – finding out your child is one of those who’s been chosen is incredible. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” Rare bond Helping Harvey through it all is someone not afraid to push his buttons – his older sister. Despite spending much of
her time in California with Citizen Queen, Shannon Baker said Kaylah has been as invested in Harvey’s success as anyone. In between her schedule with the group, she has coached him over the phone and via Facetime on audition pieces and part tracks sent to applicants. “(Kaylah) is hard on him because she knows how good he is. He can be a bit shy at times – he loves to sing, but he’s a little reserved at times until he gets on stage. Then he lights up,” Shannon Baker said with a laugh. “She’s always on him. If he has a song to rehearse, she’ll

coach him through it.” Guided by his version of a personal coach, Harvey said he’s learned subtle performing nuances such as standing straight up, projecting his voice and articulating his words that have paid dividends as the group has recorded the album. “It helps me get into the song and groove with it,” he said. “All the songs we’ve done are so good, and I like to groove and dance to the songs.” The rare give-and-take is quite the sight for Shannon Baker as she sits back and watches her children conquer the world together.
“As a parent, it’s just amazing. For (Kaylah) to take on that role and be able to help him is incredible to see,” she said. “It’s so awesome to see her take an interest in her brother and help him follow his dreams. … When she’s here, they’re singing together all the time.” Over the past year, Harvey has missed some school days to record the album, crisscrossing the country from Sugar Land to Los Angeles. At times, dozens of takes have been required before the group
can be kids again – eat snacks, drink juice and take a load off. On the surface, it’s not for the faint of heart or those easily discouraged. But despite self-described exhaustion at times, the grind appears to have made Harvey even surer of the path he wants to take. After all, it’s in his blood. “I just want to be like (my sister) is,” he said. “I want to follow my dreams, inspire other people and make her proud.”

@FtBendAthletics:
Willowridge flies past Milby, sets up key 11-5A clash Branscomb snagged his second interception of the season.
By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Willowridge’s offense had been humming heading into last week’s matchup with Milby, and it showed no signs of letting up in a wire-to-wire victory over the Buffaloes. The surge is coming at just the right time for the Eagles, with a massive District 11-5A bout looming this weekend. Willowridge won its third straight contest with a 69-24 victory over Milby last Thursday night, jumping out to a 38-17 lead by halftime and never looking back. It was the Eagles’ third consecutive game scoring at least 48 points, and the fourth time this season coach Richard Lazarou’s offense has scored at least 60 points. The high-flying Eagles (6-2, 5-1 district) will face their stiffest test of the season this week as they clash with undefeated Manvel (80, 6-0) for bragging rights and potentially the District 11-5A championship. The first-place Mavericks, who have a one-game lead over Willowridge and Marshall with two district games remaining, are allowing opponents barely 14 points per game while putting up nearly 52 points per contest themselves. Against Milby, quarterback Rufus Scott

accounted for 247 total yards (160 passing, 87 rushing) and five touchdowns (three passing, two rushing) to lead the Eagles’ attack, which is now averaging nearly 50 points per game on the season. Running back Tyrone Ross (130 yards, one TD) and Javion Chatman (184
all-purpose yards) also had strong performances for the Eagles, while Mar’quise Garrett and Lidarian Carter both caught two touchdown passes. Keshunn Lewis (10 tackles) and Andre Williams (11 tackles, one tackle for loss) led the defensive charge for Willowridge, while Robert
Travis remains lone unbeaten in 20-6A A week after topping Ridge Point in a thriller, the Travis Tigers showed no letdown last week against Clements, defeating the Rangers 57-20 Saturday afternoon at Mercer Stadium. Eric Rodriguez tossed three touchdown passes for Travis, while Colin Mushinksi and Aundre Smith both tallied multiple rushing scores. Senior receiver Parker Washington – who has given a verbal commitment to Penn State – also hauled in two scoring tosses. Travis (8-0, 6-0) will again put its undefeated season on the line Friday night against Kempner (4-4, 2-3) at Hall Stadium. John Perry tossed two

FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper
BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS
ENCHONDROMA TUMORS
An “enchondroma” is a noncancerous tumor that can affect the long, thin bones of the foot. The tumor (or tumors, as they can also develop in clusters) begins during childhood in the cartilage that lines the inside of the bones and continues to grow as the bones do. While the growths themselves are usually painless, they can cause complications by weakening the surrounding tissue and leaving the bones vulnerable to frequent fractures, as well as causing the foot to become deformed. In most cases the only recommended treatment is to monitor the lesions’ growth unless problems occur. When they do, the tumors can be surgically removed, and healthy bone grafted to the area. P.S. Patients with Ollier’s disease or Maffucci’s syndrome are more likely to develop multiple enchondroma tumors, and the chances that the tumors will become cancerous are slightly higher as well. It’s always a good idea to listen to your feet since they often have lots to tell you, including giving you clues about the rest of your body’s wellbeing. When your feet tell you there’s trouble somewhere, as your podiatrist, we will work as a team with you and your other healthcare providers (if appropriate) to keep you and your feet healthy and pain free. Feet that feel good make the rest of you feel good, too, so why not give us a call, 980-3668, and start the process today. We’re located at 3143 Hwy. 6 South.

★ASTROS, FROM PAGE 3 lessons during prep school in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and became more fluent during his time with the U.S. 16-and-under and 18-andunder national teams. From that moment, the two have become inseparable, morphing into a duo frankly deserving of their own reality show. On the surface, they couldn’t be more different – one a cocky rising superstar from New Mexico, the other a seasoned vet-
eran of nearly two decades playing baseball between Cuba, Mexico and the United States. But dig beneath the surface, and there’s a common thread – their love of baseball and the city of Houston. Well, that and playfully insulting the other on each other’s Instagram or Snapchat stories in Spanish. I could go on, but this space wouldn’t be nearly enough to recount the countless examples of such stories. And that’s not even touching on their onfield shenanigans, which
includes everything from bat flipping homers into oblivion to Brantley and Springer’s tire-changing celebration after the other homers. That’s what makes this team different, and what endears them to the fans of this city. They’re playing a kid’s game for millions of dollars, and having a blast doing it. But the era I grew up watching, that Biggio and Bagwell played in, never would have seen such “antics” despite the same underlying concept. The name of the game then
See us online www.FortBendStar.com
was more gruffness than rambunctious behavior, the game’s atmosphere more business-like than encouraging personalities to shine. I would never say that any era shows the “right” way to play – to each their own. I’ve never really ascribed to that, and I still loved watching those early 2000s Astros teams. In their purest form, sports are entertainment, however we choose to enjoy them. So regardless of the result of this World Series, sit back and enjoy the ride, on and off the field.
★CLINICS, FROM PAGE 1 "We wanted to remove the barriers of money, travel, and even time for our families by providing therapeutic services and support on campus where students spend a majority of their days, Shiels said. The district said anyone who has not been the victim of a crime, but still wants counseling, may still utilize the service, but must use Medicaid or private insurance to cover the cost of service. FBISD said the tentative goal is to have the centers established with services available by early January 2020.
