A news release from the DA’s office said the arrest came after a woman said Ruiz stopped her vehicle earlier this month before coercing her to engage in a sexual act while he was on duty. A subsequent joint investigation by the Texas Rangers, Brazoria County District Attorney’s Office, Arcola Police Department and Manvel Police Department led to Ruiz’s arrest. Sexual assault is a second-degree felony pun-
ishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Official Oppression is a Class A Misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine. “The utter violation of public trust that these allegations represent is heinous and disgraceful,” District Attorney Brian Middleton said in a statement. “My office will prosecute these criminal offenses to the fullest extent possible under the law.”

All-faiths Thanksgiving service unites community By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
When Rabbi Joshua Lobel arrived at Congregation Beth El in Missouri City in 2014, he had a vision of unity. “Inside, we all have the same feelings and emotions of gratitude (during Thanksgiving),” he said. In response to that concept, he created an annual event he said highlights the diversity of Fort Bend County while reminding people they’re all the same at their core. The Fort Bend Interfaith Council (FBIC) held its fifth annual all-faiths Thanksgiving
service, with the theme of “Peace in our Hearts, Peace in the World,” on Monday night at Christ Church in Sugar Land. Lobel, who has since left Congregation Beth El to lead Temple B’nai Israel in Clearwater, Florida, rallied several area faith leaders to form the council in 2015 as a call to action in response to the county’s ever-growing diversity. “When I began (at Beth El), one of my priorities was to build an interfaith community where we could learn, pray and do good works, because I felt it was important to be able to bring people together as a community,” Lobel said.
“I wanted to move us to a point where we’re living with each other in a more meaningful and relationship-oriented way.” The Fort Bend Interfaith Council is made up any religious group that “believes in building meaningful relationships” and seeks to promote dialogue and understanding throughout People of faith pray during the 2018 interfaith Thanksthe state’s most diverse giving service hosted by the Fort Bend Interfaith Council. county through events (Photo by Ejazali Karmali) such as the annual Thanksgiving service. Clear memories, full stomachs, can’t beat it There’s no place like home. As a kid, I can’t count the times I thought to myself, “Man…I can’t wait to get out of this house,” or (mostly) jokingly thought I wanted to run away from the rules and stipulations of my parents. But as an adult, I will admit there is a more-than-occasional longing to return to a simpler time in my childhood home. And the upcoming holiday is the perfect chance for reflection on those childhood memories. This Thursday, as I gather around my parents’ new wooden table that’s shined to perfection just for the occasion, it will be one of the
Landan Kuhlmann LEAD REPORTER
only times all year that my entire family spends time together as one – just the way it used to be. From quiet dinners with just my parents, sister and myself sitting around the table to loading up the car and driving out to my dad’s hometown of Fredericksburg and my aunt and uncle’s country home, this
holiday is full of memories I’ll always cherish. Whether it was listening to my sometimes-obnoxious Aggie cousin and my University of Texas graduate father duke it out during what used to be the schools’ annual Thanksgiving clash or playing a simple board game at my family’s dinner table to hold us over until a turkey coma set in, there’s never been anything quite like the holidays. We’ve all gone our separate directions in many ways as the years have passed by. I’m working a job I love despite the sometimes odd hours. My sister has now been married for several years. My dad has
retired and my mom is just a few years away from retirement herself. My aunt and uncle still live in that same country house, but my cousin is now married with two kids and makes his home down in Meyerland. My parents’ home has changed in many ways since those early Thanksgiving meals. A little more than two years ago, they decided to remodel their home, transforming it from a place to raise a family into a space they would enjoy in retirement. Then, as they were in the final stages of work, Hurricane Harvey ravaged Houston – throwing a wrench in the plans. They had to start
over from scratch, and we wound up having our annual Thanksgiving dinner with my sister and her husband at their home. In due time, they have recovered. The tile floor I knew as a kid has been replaced with one that needs a “Caution: Slippery” sign if you’re walking around without shoes on. That old wooden island has given way to marble, with little flecks of silver interspersed among the dark gray. But every Thanksgiving, it’s like nothing’s changed. The venue may shift from time to time, but what cannot ever be replaced or taken away are the memories you make with the ones you love.

Thanksgiving has never been a grand spectacle with our family, and I don’t see that changing any time soon. But that’s the way it’s always been, and being back at my parents’ home never fails to instantly transport me back to simpler times – if only for a few hours. It’s all about the simple pleasures that come with laughing and joking about old war stories from your family’s past, all while stuffing your face with all the turkey and mashed potatoes you can handle. As Woody Harrelson said in Zombieland: “Enjoy the little things.” I agree wholeheartedly. They can’t be beat.

How to Treat Pink Eye
Pink Eye, or conjunctivitis, is an inflammation and irritation of the lining of the eye. It can be caused by bacteria, a virus, or allergies. Pink eye is considered highly contagious and can be spread from person to person with hand-to-eye contact. Symptoms include eye redness, itching, crusting around the eyes or milky discharge. If pink eye is due to an allergy, it can be treated with overthe-counter (OTC) antihistamine eye drops such as Visine Eye-Redness Relief (tetrahydrolozine) or Zaditor Eye-Itch drops (ketofifen). Viral infections tend to resolve on their own in about two weeks. Bacterial infections are treated with antibiotic eye drops such as Tobrex (tobramycin), Ciloxan (ciprofloxacin), and Vigamox (moxifloxacin). When inserting the drops, it is important to not touch the affected eye(s) with the tip of the applicator beacuse it can spread or worsen the infection. 11-30-16 - Ed’s Pharmacy - 2 x 4.5

FOOT BURSITIS
Bursitis is a painful condition that occurs when the fluid-filled sacs (bursa) that cushion your joint become inflamed. When bursitis affects your foot, you will notice your heel is swollen, hot, and painful to touch. This is usually caused by excessive strain placed on the feet by running, sports, standing all day, or carrying a lot of extra body weight. Shoes that are tight fitting or lack proper support are also possible causes of foot bursitis. You can usually treat this condition yourself by resting your feet in an elevated position, massaging your feet and changing your footwear. Your doctor may also recommend stretching exercises to help your foot heal and help you avoid pain in the future. P.S. Foot bursitis can be the result of a condition called Haglund’s deformity, which occurs when a bony spur develops on the heel from rubbing against the inside of the shoe. We believe in helping you help yourself. We’ll make recommendations as to how you can help keep your feet healthy and happy despite the problem you’re dealing with, whether it’s bursitis, a nail disorder, a chronic condition, or hereditary concerns. For preventive care to treatment of an acute condition to surgery to correct foot deformities, we welcome patients of all ages at 3143 Hwy. 6 South. Marshall outlasts A&M Consolidated
Ridge Point falls in state semis By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
The Marshall Buffalos have long been known for their offensive firepower, with backfield running mates Malik Hornsby and Devon Achane leading the charge for an offense averaging more than 50 points a game this season. In order to advance Friday night, however, it was the Buffalo defense that needed to come up with a crucial stop as Marshall (11-1) survived with a 32-27 victory over A&M Consolidated (11-1) in a Class 5A Division II area round matchup at Cy Fair ISD’s Pridgeon Stadium. With time winding down, A&M Consolidated quarterback Gage Pahl heaved a last-ditch pass into the end zone. But the pass was broken up, preserving the Marshall win and sending them back to the regional round for the fifth time in

seven years. Offensively, it was the Devon Achane show once again, as the senior running back rushed for 228 yards and three more touchdowns. In doing so, Achane reached 100 rushing touchdowns for his high school career. Brandon Tyronn also ran for two scores on the night after not scoring a rushing touchdown all season to
help the attack. And when faced with the prospect of stymieing a Tiger offense that was prolific in its own right late in the game, the Buffalo defense held strong. Marshall will face either Huntsville (8-3) or Crosby (6-5) in the region round. The HuntsvilleCrosby game was played after press time, so go to fortbendstar.com for an updated schedule.
The quest for state redemption has come to an end for the Ridge Point Lady Panthers. After fighting back out of a 2-0 set hole, the Lady Panthers (46-5) fell to Plano West (40-5) Friday night in five sets (25-21, 25-11, 18-25, 21-25, 15-13) at in the Class 6A state semifinals at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland, ending their season. Despite the loss, however, 2019 will be a season that many will remember for years to come. A season after finishing with a school-record 47 wins on their way to the state final, the Lady Panthers followed up with a 46-win campaign in 2019. Over the last four seasons, the Lady Panthers’ graduating class has helped rack up 150 wins, brought home three consecutive District 206A championships and punched a postseason

ticket every year. After the Lady Panthers had never won more than 27 games in a season during their first five varsity seasons, the group never failed to win fewer than 28 games in four campaigns. Following a loss to Austin on Oct. 18, 2016, the group did not lose a single District 20-6A match for
the rest of their time at Ridge Point. In the coming year, head coach Lauryn Bailey looks to face an uphill battle to replace a loaded squad that will graduate nine seniors, three of whom – Reagan Rutherford, Nia McCardell and Claire Jeter – earned All American honors in 2019.

Marshall’s Hornsby picked for All-American Bowl By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM
Those watching the Marshall High School football team the last two seasons know how easy its offense has made the game look at times. The engineer of the Buffalos’ prolific attack has now been recognized as one of the best seniors in the country. Quarterback Malik Hornsby, the No. 6 dualthreat quarterback recruit in the nation, was officially selected for the 2020 AllAmerican Bowl during a celebratory event at the school Wednesday afternoon. Hornsby will play in the 20th annual East vs. West game at noon Jan. 4 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, where 100 of the country’s top high school seniors will showcase their skills in front of a national television audience on NBC. “It feels really great. I’m thankful to my family and my team to be the first one coming out of Marshall to play in this game,” Hornsby said. “I couldn’t do it without my coaches and my team, especially my offensive line. Without them, I wouldn’t be here today.” Along with former Marshall tailback Jerry Davis and current backfield mate Devon Achane, Hornsby has led the most explosive attack in District 11-5A
since taking over the starting job Sept. 29, 2018, against Sterling. Marshall has gone 21-2 in his 23 starts, averaging nearly 51 points per game and earning a berth in the Class 5A Division II state title game last season. “He came in very mature, seasoned and extremely focused at wanting to play and wanting to get better,” said James Williams, Marshall’s second-year head coach. “He learned our system very quickly, meshed with the team quickly, and the guys gravitate to him now.” Over the last two seasons, Hornsby has amassed more than 5,100 total yards and 82 touchdowns (46 passing, 36 rushing) in the Buffalos’ black and gold. What has most struck Williams, though, was Hornsby’s desire to shore up every aspect of his game. Following a 2018 season in which he was a firstteam All-District 11-5A selection with more than 2,700 total yards, Williams noted Hornsby put in offseason work on fundamentals and footwork to improve his passing accuracy in 2019. And though the raw numbers (58.9 percent completions this season compared to 58.6 in 2018) may not indicate much improvement, Williams knows what his eyes have seen and that the results

speak for themselves. Hornsby had 23 touchdown passes without an interception heading into last week’s second-round playoff game against A&M Consolidated. “(Malik) doesn’t want to be known as a running quarterback,” he said. “He wants to be a quarterback; he’s just blessed with that natural running ability.” It certainly has been noticed, and not just at the high school level. Hornsby holds more than 25 major-college scholarship
offers from programs such as Alabama, Florida State, Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M and the University of Houston. He will announce his commitment shortly before the AllAmerican Bowl. “Thank you for getting me to where I am today, and I hope the support doesn’t stop until I’ve accomplished my goal,” he told supporters Wednesday. That’s a given, Williams said. “We know (Hornsby’s)
future is very bright,” he said. “We’re going to be
supporting him all the way to the end.”

Such was the response to one of two Houston-area openings that police were out directing traffic into and out of the parking lot while lines were out the door. (Photos by Landan Kuhlmann)
★ IN-N-OUT, FROM PAGE 1 customers poured in. “They’re obviously excited that we’re here, and we’re excited to be in Stafford. We’re very blessed.” Resident reaction in the days leading up to the opening echoed that sentiment. “I went to a high school down the street from the OG In-N-Out! Feels like coming home,” Veronica Weizenecker wrote in response to a Facebook post advertising the opening. Added Fernanda Uribe, “We moved to Houston from California four years ago. Now there’s no way we’re moving back.” Even though the restaurant did not officially open until 9 a.m. Friday, Charlesworth said there were people lining up outside the front doors by 4 a.m. “They’ve been thanking us and telling us they wish we would’ve been here sooner, but they’re glad we’re here now,” he said. “We just appreciate that they’re taking time to visit us and they’re being patient with us today.”
