Stafford voters, who are charged with selecting leaders for their city council and school board, recently had their first chance to hear from the group of candidates that will be on the ballot later this month. Stafford MSD trustee Manuel Hinojosa, an unop-

posed incumbent in Position 2, and Stafford City Council member Virginia Rosas moderated a candidate forum held last Thursday. Position 1 on the SMSD Board of Trustees also will be on the May 1 ballot, with early voting scheduled for April 19-27. The candidates vying for that spot, vacated by new city council member Xavier Herrera, are Dawn Reichling, Edward E. Rec-

Grab your popcorn, blankets and lawn chairs and enjoy a family-friendly movie night. The Missouri City Parks and Recreation Department and the Mayor's Youth Commission have collaborated to provide residents a free monthly outdoor movie series benefiting local organizations. The “Friday Night Flicks” events will be held at Community Park, located at 1700 Glenn Lakes Ln.. Seating begins at 6:30 p.m. and movies begin at dusk. Food will be available for purchase, and a playground for kids is nearby. On April 16, the city will show “Wonder Woman.” In lieu of selling tickets or charging a fee, the city will collect new or gently used household goods in support of Fort Bend Women's Center. On May 14, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" is scheduled to play to benefit the Missouri City Animal Shelter. Accepted items to donate include dry dog food, dry cat food, bleach, blankets (no larger than a throw blanket), chewy or crunchy dog treats, clumping cat litter (Arm & Hammer Brand or Black Box) and toys for dogs and cats without plush filling. The city showed "Onward" on March 19 in support of Star of Hope and collected clothing, shoes, hygiene products, books, bottled water, canned goods and nonperishable foods from attendees. Erin Cummings, founder of YESYoga in Sugar Land, has helped create a community of fitness lovers thanks to her offering of free weekly classes at Sugar Land Town Square. But the Kansas native and Wichita State University alumna had to grow a new social network from the ground up in her new home. “It was just me and my husband when we moved down,” Cummings said. “We didn’t know anyone.”

She said coming to the Houston area was a bit of a

culture shock for her, but that she appreciates the opportunity for her two children to be exposed to different cultures and to learn about different people and their stories. “I like to picture Sugar Land as the world,” Cummings said. “You don’t actually need to travel anywhere because you can usually find it here in Sugar Land. It’s so diverse.” Her YESYoga classes have provided people in Fort Bend County with an outlet for pent-up stress and frustration and a social connection to counter the isolation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

After immersing herself in teaching yoga, Cummings became a certified instructor, racking up more than 1,000 hours of training and opening an online studio in January 2018. She followed it up with a brick-and-mortar studio in October of that same year. She started out offering free-pop classes in 2018, and began free “Sundays on the Square” outside her studio at 16140 City Walk in 2020. In a June 24 Facebook post, she switched to donationbased pricing and lowered membership prices to $99, but said YESYoga would con-

tinue to pay teachers at their normal rate. YESYoga, Cummings said, was designed to be “a place for people who were burned out and felt unworthy and lonely and just needed a place to find each other.” “We called it YESYoga because we wanted to be a yes for something bigger,” Cummings added. “We wanted to be a yes for more than being a mom or more than just showing up for your job every day.” Michelle Joseph, a Rosen-

At The WIDE School in Missouri City, Creative Director Marjon Aucoin said art is a means of self-expression for students. It’s not about how they’re different, according to Aucoin. It’s about the common thread they have of expressing their emotions through creative exploits. “We’re using art as an avenue for understanding,” said Aucoin, who runs the school with her older sister, Maryam. The Missouri City private school, which serves 230 students from kindergarten through eighth grade, is a “place where children are supported as they Wonder, Investigate, Discover and

ested in,” Aucoin said. “That’s my job in life, to introduce them to who they are and use it as an avenue to express themselves.” That is certainly the case for at least one student at the school, eighth-grader Addison Young. “At my old school, art was an elective – I never really liked it until I came here, and this is my first year doing art,” she said. “I’ve sewed for a while, but I had never done any art pieces or won any competitions.” That outlet, in turn, has led to several of the school’s students placing well at art and writing competitions since the start of this year. Most recently, Aucoin’s daughter Perrin won the 3rd-5th grade category for "Free Education for All,” in the Houston Bar Association’s Law Day Contest on March 25, while London Casser took second place with

"The Equality Committee for an Anti-Racist Country." Luna Baba won the HBA Law Day’s 6th-8th grade category for her piece, "The First Amendment." “Some of these pieces they’ve worked on for months. You’re teaching them now that working hard can affect anything – not just art,” Aucoin said. On Jan. 28, students Baba (sixth grade), Ryan Kuo (fifth grade), Tirza Chazaro (eighth grade) and Taylor Finley (seventh grade) were named Best of Show in their respective categories in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s student art contest. Kuo’s piece entitled “Moo!” is set to go to auction this Sunday. Then later in January, several students took home top regional honors in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards put on by the Alliance for

Young Artists and Writers. Young and fellow eighthgrader Myles Tran won the Gold Key Award, the contest’s highest regional award. From there, they automatically advanced to national judging in New York City, which took place in March. “We only have six eighthgraders (at our school), and four of them placed in the competition. Thousands are submitted, and that one I was just completely blown away by because I didn’t know how we’d do,” Aucoin said. Young said her piece entitled “It’s Not That I Don’t Want to Listen,” was a representation of her struggles with concentrating on her work in the classroom at the public school she previously attended. “When I came here it was way different in terms of how we learn and what we do to

It made me think back to my last few years in public school,” she said. “It’s not that I didn’t want to listen, it was just that I didn’t find interest in it so it shows information going in one ear and out the other.” For Tran, his piece called “The Takeover” was aimed at representing the struggles in his home when the COVID-19 pandemic took over. The house, he said, represented the world and how coronavirus had ripped the building apart. It was also a self-portrait of his own mental and emotional state amidst the pandemic. “Making that art piece really showed what was going on (during that time),” he said. “It showed my worrying, how I was stressed out during all this time.” Those explanations, Aucoin said, are the essence of the WIDE School’s aims beyond the accolades. She said the artistic outlet allows for creative ways in which to illustrate their innermost emotions which may not come out easy through typical means of expression. And it’s those moments that have occurred so far this year – and those that may still be to come – that Aucoin said will be burned into her memory. “(The art pieces) are often self-portraits. They may not be a representation of what they look like, but they’re an expression and representation of how the children feel,” she said. “To see these kids lay everything out on the line, talk about their most vulnerable times and the things they’re challenged with or hope for – and get recognition for it – is just the best moment in any educator’s career.”

Column: Easter gives birth to new hope Almost exactly a year ago today, my family took a leap of faith at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and a period of great uncertainty, doing something they had joked about for years. They decided to take home four baby chickens and raise them in the yard – or “on the homestead” as my dad tends to say in tongue-in-cheek fashion – in a largely suburban and urban setting. It is a relatively large lot compared to others in the vicinity of the surrounding Chicago suburbs that allows for a sizable garden and room for hens to roam around freely. It was an enormous project that necessitated consistent research from my sister, who in effect became the mother hen, along with my dad and my broth-

er to build a proper chicken coop and a run that was weatherproof and predator proof. During that time, much has changed, and so much hasn’t. The chickens have since laid hundreds of eggs, which have gone into delicious omelettes and flatbreads and countless other culinary projects around the house. It has also given me and my other sister in New York a chance to bond during a year that felt like a decade

and made the time apart more bearable. I have been fortunate to have made more frequent visits and to form a genuine connection with these adorable, fluffy creatures even if I thought it was silly or even an absurd idea at first. I know backyard chickens and other farm animals are far more common in Texas and in the more rural parts of Fort Bend County, and I was exposed to farming when I made trips to Wisconsin with my sister and spent part of my summer on our uncle’s dairy farm milking cows and cleaning up their dung, among other things. So this Easter, when we were stuck watching our church service virtually and unable to hug our grandmother as we kept our distance from her dur-

ing our brief holiday visit, I felt it was especially appropriate and a rare sign of optimism from beyond that we had, as my sister has so aptly coined it, a “four-egg day” on Easter Sunday. As she explained to me, most chickens can only lay one egg per day, and for them to all do so on the same day is not an everyday occurrence, especially since the youngest of the lot only started laying eggs last month. Even before that, we had spent all day decorating the eggs as has been our annual tradition, but we had the added bonus of having our own fresh eggs that were each different shades of red, green and brown by virtue of having four different breeds of chickens in our coop — a British Buff Orpington, a Rhode Is-

land Red, and two that are known as Olive Eggers. And it seemed like a very fitting note to conclude a much-needed trip to visit family, all the while reminding me the common threads which bind me to multiple places, something that people in a place as diverse as Fort Bend County are bound to appreciate. Property owners in Fort Bend County could see an increase in their yearover-year values when receiving their 2021 valuations, according to a news release from the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District (FBCAD). Those property owners should have already received their 2021 Notice of Appraised Value or will receive it in the coming days, FBCAD said. According to the news release, the average home value will increase by 6.47 percent for residential properties, while the average value will change by 4.6 percent for properties with a homestead exemption. FBCAD also said the average commercial property value will increase by 9.33 percent “Throughout the past year, the local residential

Antihistamines Help Reduce Allergy Symptoms

The spring season often makes it difficult to breath in those who have allergies to pollen. The body’s immune system produces proteins called antibodies to fight anything that enters the body believed to cause harm like an infection. The reaction of the immune system to pollen or a trigger causes the immune system to release chemicals, including histamines. This causes inflammation of the skin, the sinuses or our breathing pathways. Antihistamines are a class of medications that help reduce common allergy symptoms caused by the body’s histamine release. Some antihistamines require a prescription and others are available over the counter at a pharmacy. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can work up to twelve hours, but it can cause sleepiness. Second-generation antihistamines such as Claritin (loratadine), Zyrtec (cetirizine), and Allegra (fexofenadine) are taken once daily for all day allergy relief and produce less sleepiness. Because antihistamines cause sleepiness, it may be better to take them at bedtime.

The Ridge Point High School softball team has been heating up as the season moves along, and the Lady Panthers put their power on display last week as they continued their quest for a fourth consecutive District 20-6A crown. Blane Simmons and Grace Janik both hit grand slams while combining for 11 RBIs in a 19-2 win over Clements on March 30, while Alexa Semeyn also homered. Janik then had two more hits and two RBIs in Ridge Point’s 6-0 win over Austin on April 1. Semeyn and Callie Mayes had two hits apiece. It was the 10th multi-hit game of the season for Semeyn, who has a .537 batting average this season. Pitcher Malyn Simmons had two wins for Ridge Point (16-7) in the circle last week, including a complete game with nine strikeouts against Austin. Eventually, she needed a change of scenery and found YESYoga through an internet search in 2019. “I think people are missing that these days. There’s no self-care,” Joseph said. “I think that’s where you get into mental health dangers because nobody’s paying attention to themselves.” Joseph said she brought as many of her friends as possible to experience a class with her, taking advantage of Cummings’ initiative to allow participants to bring a guest for free each month, though she said that slowed down when the pandemic hit last year. Lauren Somers, a Minnesota native, has been a client of YESYoga from the beginning, attending the pop-up Town Square sessions three months before the studio opened. Like Cummings, Somers said her husband got a job in the oil and gas sector that sent them to Sugar Land. While the classes are primarily attended by women, men also are welcome to attend the classes, and the couple has attended classes together and made some new friends in the process while introducing her

new friends to the other attendees. Cummings said YESYoga has also offered kids yoga programs in the past, like the Halloween Yoga event she held in 2019. “It’s always a breath of fresh air going in feeling connected and saying hi to people who you might have had class with a few times before,” Cummings said. “But also welcoming new people that are just joining and you can show them the ropes or whatever we’re doing that day.” Due to the economic impact of the pandemic, Cummings decided in June to offer a donation-based payment method to make her classes more accessible. In addition, Cummings has created a scholarship fund for her alma mater, Wichita State, aimed at creating more female entrepreneurs. She said the funds will be awarded on a rolling basis for the next five years. “I just really wanted to help another woman who had a creative idea to feel successful and get her business off the ground,” Cummings said. Everywhere she’s been, Cummings has sought to create a family atmosphere with her yoga classes. And her friends and yoga students and even her Lululemon ambassador colleagues stepped up for her during a time of need, when her dad

spent more than two months in the hospital recovering from a motorcycle accident in Texas. “The people here were just amazing,” Cummings said. “One of my clients if they were friends of mine would bring me food at the hospital and they would come take

my class and see how I was doing. One of the ladies at Lululemon started a GoFundMe for my dad’s hospital bills. People just really showed up for me.” She said she knew at that point that the studio had to keep going. “I went from this lonely per-

son in Houston as a mom to now having two kids and feeling like I had a whole bunch of women and community around me that supported me,” Cummings said. When COVID-19 cases began to spike in 2020, Cummings said she felt that support again, and wanted to

This is the first time, however, that his artwork has made it to this level of the competition. “I was just shocked that I was in it – I entered the competition mainly just to test my skill level,” he said. “I wasn’t expecting it to make it auction ever.”

But his art teacher, Tammy Bui, was not surprised that Amomoy became the first SMSD student to have artwork reach HLSR’s auction. "Every year I see the selected pieces and I know our students' work is that good, too,” Bui said in a news release. Kuo of The WIDE School also is seeing the fruits of his labor. His monochromatic cow painting, he

said, had no elegant meaning behind it, but was fun to draw. “I like cows, because they’re hard to draw, and I really wanted to challenge myself,” Kuo said. “I’ve always liked bulls and the minotaur and things like that. … I like the creativity of art, I like the colors that are flowing and moving. I like how the piece expresses yourself when you draw it and how emotional it is.”

The WIDE School is a private school in Missouri City and has served Fort Bend-area communities since 2001. Creative Director Marjon Aucoin, who runs the school with her sister, said having a student place in the rodeo’s prestigious competition was among the best moments in the school’s competition history. “Some of these pieces they’ve worked on for months,” she said. “You’re teaching them now that working hard can affect anything – not just art.” Their hard work appears to be paying off for Amomoy and Kuo, who both deflected praise. They said their favorite part of the rodeo art competition is seeing how it’s ending up. “I’m honored – there are no words I could say, really,” Amomoy said. “I feel like there were so many before me who deserved this title. I want to continue making records and history.”

“We have to change our system,” John said. “A lot of companies are moving to Texas. If we work hard together, we can bring more modern businesses to Houston, to Stafford. We have enough space.” The school board candidates were asked to define their most important responsibility for a school board member. Thompson and Rector emphasized improving communication with parents. “As trustees, we should be transparent with the parents,” Rector said. “Also, trustees should be involved

in the community and going out in different neighborhoods of Stafford to see what they need and what can be done better inside the schools.” Thompson, who said she had been in Stafford for 10 years and has two children in the SMSD system, said she has been involved with community service in the city. “My mission is to make sure all students at Stafford have academic achievement,” Thompson said. “To me, the most important responsibility of the school board is communication.” Smith did not attend the

forum but submitted a written statement that was read by Rosas. “I am not a newcomer,” Smith said. “I have consistently showed interested and concern for our city but also what’s best for our students.” Reichling said her goal was to earn the trust of SMSD parents. “They need to be able to reach out to us,” she said. “We need to be a presence in the community that they see and that they know that they can trust. That’s what I want to be, someone they know they can trust, whether they have a problem, a concern, a

question, or even an idea of something that can be done in a school.” Mendonca said the school board needs to set a vision for the district for the superintendent, administrators, and teachers to implement and goals for them to achieve. “Trustees are not involved in the day-to-day operations of the school district,” Mendonca said. “We help with the overall plan, like the board of directors of a corporation. Whether it’s something major or it’s something that affects one campus, we’re the ones who set the tone for the district.”

Almost anywhere you go, you can enjoy a bagel nowadays that will accommodate any dietary requirement or taste. Nutella? Check. Hummus? Check. Dairy-free cream cheese? Check. But where can you go if you’d like to close your eyes and pretend you’re enjoying an authentic New York bagel on a spring day in Central Park? The answer is Boulevard Bagel & Cafe in Sugar Land. Some of the fondest food memories of my childhood were my frequent trips with my dad to Jewish delis in Chicago, where I had corned beef hash between a sliced “everything” bagel, the Swiss Army knife of bagels. However, out of my own neglect, and possibly in part due to the overwhelming variety of other dining options in Fort Bend County, I have not given these amazing round creations the attention they deserve. On the final day of Lent, I ventured on over to Boulevard Bagel to finally cross off an important item off of my bucket list: a Lox Sandwich ($10.99) on an Everything Bagel, generously seasoned with poppy seeds, sesame seeds, onion flakes, garlic flakes, pretzel salt, and pepper.
