Missouri City hires firm to investigate city manager By Matt deGrood MDEGROOD@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Missouri City’s municipal government has hired a law firm to investigate allegations surrounding new City Manager Charles “Tink” Jackson, who was placed on administrative leave about three months into his tenure.. The city council met last week in an unrecorded special council meeting to authorize hir ing Austinb a s e d D e D e Church & Associates to handle the invest igat ion, Jackson according to Tara Crain, spokesperson for the city. Crain did not respond to a follow-up phone call seeking more information about the cost of the investigation or more details about the allegations surrounding Jackson. Attendees at last week’s early morning meeting told the Fort Bend Star that the council held no discussion outside of executive session other than the vote on the law firm. Members of council have declined to comment on the matter, saying they don’t comment on personnel matters. The firm describes itself as a team of experts that can provide training and videos, investigations of complaints, executive coaching, climate surveys, affirmative action plans and Title IX guidance, among other services, according to its website. Jackson has been on paid administrative leave with the city ever since the council emerged early April 5, after spending more than three hours in closed executive session, and opted to place Jackson on leave, pending an

An investigation into Stafford MSD Superintendent Robert Bostic’s contract will determine which of two documents is valid, school board vice president Greg Holsapple told the Fort Bend Star last week, more than a month after the board of trustees voted to hire a law firm to investigate. Trustees have not received any updates

about the investigation, but are eager to hear something soon so the district can move forward, Holsapple said. “This is not a big deal, more of a nuisance,” Holsapple said. “In my personal opinion, I voted against this investigation. The reason is that it’s going to cost a lot of money. We haven’t gotten a bill for it yet, but I honestly think this could have been worked out personally. But some on the board wanted the investigation.”

Holsapple’s comments about the investigation are the first public words to the Star about the matter since trustees in a 5-1 vote hired Austinbased Sara Leon & Associates, PLLC to

investigate the superintendent’s contract and a Level 3 grievance filed by the CFO. Stafford MSD officials in the weeks since that vote have been tight-lipped about the matter. District spokes-

person Gracie Martinez last week referred all questions about the matter to the board of trustees. And the district is fighting the public release of documents connected to the investigation. In response to an open records request submitted by the Fort Bend Star, the district’s legal representatives filed an appeal to the Texas Attorney General’s Of-

An unforgettable life

New FBISD elementary school to bear name of late student By Matt deGrood MDEGROOD@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Fort Bend County residents and leaders in the days since the school district announced its 54th elementary school would be named after Alyssa Ferguson shared remembrances that wouldn’t be out of place discussing famous figures from the county’s past. But whereas many of the district’s other schools are named after former board members, educators or famous county figures, Alyssa Ferguson Elementary School’s namesake is a former student who left her mark on the district before her untimely death in 2018 from cancer. “As a committee, we felt Alyssa’s life provides a great example to our students on how they can utilize the profile-of-a-graduate attributes in serving as compassionate citizens and servant leaders,” FBISD board President Dave Rosenthal said. The board of trustees recently approved the school’s name at a board meeting. Alyssa Ferguson Elementary School is set to open in the fall of 2023 at 13000 Heri-

Stafford boys, Ridge Point girls fall short at state tourney By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

The inaugural trips to the state soccer tournament for two local high school teams ended in heartbreak late last week. Stafford’s boys and Ridge Point’s girls both fell short of a championship, with each team losing in the state semifinal matches of their respective classifications to bring historic seasons to a close for both programs. The Spartans’ boys’ team

saw its season end with a 71 loss to Boerne in the Class 4A semifinal on Wednesday at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown. Aron Maldonado scored the lone goal in the match for Stafford, which finished the best season in school history with a 20-64 record and the program’s fifth district championship over the last seven seasons. It was the deepest playoff run in program history. This season was the fourth time in head coach Ruben Perez’s nine seasons that Stafford had reached the regional

tournament, but the first state trip for the program. “We accomplished some goals that we had set earlier in the season,” Perez said. “We wanted to win (the) district, navigate through the playoffs, then break through the regional tournament. ...I told them at the end of the game that they’re going to look back and see all the great things that happened through the season.” Stafford will lose 15 seniors

Memorial Hermann relaxes many COVID-related restrictions By Adam Zuvanich AZUVANICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Memorial Hermann Health System has relaxed some of its restrictions related to COVID-19 amidst a continued decline in cases and hospitalizations across the Houston region. Effective Monday, the visitation policy for the hospital system's inpa-

tient facilities returned to pre-pandemic, campusspecific guidelines, and masks are now optional for visitors when in nonpatient care areas. Masks continue to be required in patient care areas, the hospital system said. Additionally, health screenings are no longer required upon entry for patients, visitors and hospital staff. Pre-procedure COVID testing will continue to be required

for specific procedures, while patients with proof of up-to-date COVID vaccination and no COVID symptoms are exempt from pre-procedure testing in many cases. The new guidelines apply to Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, 17500 W. Grand Pkwy. S, along with other Memorial Hermann facilities in Fort Bend County. Masks continue to be required at Memorial

Do small things with great love Matt deGrood MANAGING EDITOR

I think we should all take a moment this week to appreciate just how much Fort Bend County’s Alyssa Ferguson was able to achieve in 15 short years. Fort Bend County is replete with examples of residents who’ve lived impressive lives. Some of them we’ve even written about in the pages of the Fort Bend Star. Take Benjamin Franklin Williams and Larry Callies as just a few recent examples. What separates Alyssa Ferguson from all those other figures, however, is that old quote from Mother Teresa, “We can do no great things, only small things with great love.” Ferguson, a Missouri City resident who died from brain cancer in 2018, didn’t have a chance to live long enough to acquire long lists of titles and awards. Rather, she took the time she had to always think of others, and

to use the power she had to benefit as many as she could. And that is quite frankly remarkable, especially from someone so young. Alyssa’s father, Scott Ferguson, told the Fort Bend Star last week that his daughter dreamed of one day becoming a third-grade teacher. While she never got that chance, now generations of students will have the chance to learn from her example when they walk through the doors of Alyssa Ferguson Elementary, which will open its doors in the fall of 2023. And the lessons that Alyssa Ferguson had to offer are lessons from which all of us could learn. I wish I had had a chance to meet Alyssa Ferguson. While I only got to know her by way of those who loved her, I suspect her passion for life and caring for others would have been infectious. In today’s world, it’s easy to be gripped by a sort of existential angst, a feeling that with all the woes and struggles of 2022, the biggest issues are somehow beyond our control. But as Alyssa made so clear with her life, it’s not incumbent on us to solve all of life’s ills.

Maybe it’s making friends with someone in unfamiliar territory, or perhaps it’s sharing resources with those less fortunate. The particulars of how we might help those around us will differ from person to person and perspective to perspective. The important thing is that we each do our part to make our small corners of the world a better place. Not all of us might go as far as Alyssa, who used her only Make-A-Wish to help build a well in Zimbabwe. But if we can even emulate that brave 15-year-old a little bit, the world will be a much better place. If you aren’t sure where to start, maybe try giving some money to the organization building wells in Alyssa Ferguson’s honor. From there, maybe make a point to brighten someone else’s day. The options are nearly limitless. But it is through simple acts of kindness and care that we can best honor Alyssa Ferguson’s contributions in Fort Bend County. While Ferguson might have made the biggest impression in Fort Bend ISD, her passion for improving lives is too important not to remember across the county.

Willowridge alumnus named school’s new head football coach By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

The Willowridge Eagles have found their new head football coach, and it’s a homecoming of sorts for the new man in charge. “Just walking around the fieldhouse yesterday, I got chills,” Kendron Penson Sr. said Thursday. On April 12, Willowridge named Penson Sr. as the school’s new head coach and athletics coordinator. Penson Sr. graduated from the school in 1995, and he was also a member of the Willowridge squad that made it to the area round of the playoffs. He replaces Ramon Chinyoung, who left after last season Kendron Penson Sr. to take a coaching job with the NFL’s Denver Broncos. Penson Sr. has been the assistant head coach and offensive line coach at Hightower High School for the past four seasons. During his time at Hightower, the school said Penson Sr. has coached eight future college lineman, including five Division I players. As the assistant coach last year, he helped guide the Hurricanes to an 11-3 season and a berth in the Region III-5A final against eventual state champion Katy Paetow. Willowridge went 4-5 last season, missing the playoffs for the first time in four years. The program has been in a bit of a playoff drought, with just five postseason appearances and two playoff wins in the last 18 years. The Eagles have not won a postseason game since 2016, despite making three playoff appearances in that span. And Penson is eager to get to work on restoring his alma mater’s program to playoff glory. “It’s very humbling (to be back),” he said. “I got my start right there at Willowridge. I’m in tune with a lot of the coaches that groomed me – what the kids say is ‘Pay it forward,’ and that’s what I’m doing right now. It’s time for me to groom the next generation, teach them and have them playing at the level our coaches had us playing at in ‘95.” He can’t wait to get started. “I’m excited to bring it back and put on that blue and silver, and represent my old high school,” Penson said. “It’s near and dear to me. Nobody’s going to take care of home like a person that stays there. That’s the most exciting thing.”

Elkins’ Payne gaining rising profile on diamond By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

When Elkins High School head baseball coach Brent Schmidt leaves the field most nights, he said there’s usually one last player still taking swings in the cage. That would be sophomore Braylon Payne, who Schmidt said is a fairly rare combination of work ethic, natural skill and physicality. Payne has emerged as one of the Knights’ leaders on the diamond this season, Schmidt said. “He’s always the one (I tell) ‘be sure to lock up,’” Schmidt said. “Because he’s still doing something to get better.” The work Payne has put in appears to be paying off in a big way for the 6-foot, 150-pound sophomore. Entering play this week, Payne was hitting .452 with a 1.255 OPS in 24 games this season, helping the Knights to a 15-8-1 record and 7-3 mark in District 20-6A. “The thing that’s been in place since the day I met him is the work ethic and that love for the extra work,” said Schmidt, who is in his third year as head coach. “You combine that with the natural physicality that he’s got, that’s what has really helped him excel.” Payne’s work ethic and skills have been years in the making, as he started playing baseball at the age of 4 and said he never entertained much of anything else. “It’s just something I loved, and I always tried to do really well in it… Before I really knew what was going on, my parents put me in baseball,” Payne said. “Then as I started growing up, I saw that I was really good and that I could do some great things with it.” Fast forward to the present day, and Payne is doing a little bit of everything on the diamond for Elkins. His .452 batting average and 1.255 OPS are both second on

the team entering play this week, while his .750 slugging percentage leads the Knights. He is also the team leader in hits (38), runs scored (25), stolen bases (21) and extra-base hits (13) entering this week, all while being tied for the team lead with four homers and 22 RBIs. He's a jack of all trades, Schmidt said, that powers the Knights’ offensive engine. “He really sparks us – as he goes, that’s how we go,” Schmidt said. “…Baseball ebbs and flows, and momentum is a huge thing. Having him consistently playing the way he has, has really sparked everyone else.” Rising star Payne’s play on the diamond has already started garnering some college interest, as Schmidt said recruiters from Houston, Texas, Texas A&M and Rice have all come out to see the speedy center fielder. Prior to the season, he was Perfect Game’s 31st-ranked recruit in the state in the class of 2024 and 7th in the state at his position. But his coach said there is even more untapped raw potential inside his star, and that Payne has not let the attention distract him. His elite speed may be the shining star of his game to this point, but Schmidt also noted Payne’s improved bat speed and arm strength –

which had him throwing in the mid-80s this fall – as aspects that have begun to manifest themselves. Payne also hit a growth spurt and gained about 30 pounds over the offseason, which has been a game changer when combined with his natural skill. “The tools are starting to really pop because of the pure physicality,” Schmidt said. “… And he’s still raw. There’s a lot of room for growth, both physically and in terms of learning the game to go from ‘good’ to ‘elite.’ He has all those intangibles lined up to be able to do that for himself.” Payne echoed his coach, and said Schmidt’s decision to put him at the top of the lineup despite a tough freshman year – during which he hit just .182 with a .497 OPS – helped flip the switch entering his sophomore campaign. “He showed some confidence in me,” Payne said. “He made me realize I have something great, and that I could go far with it.” Always evolving There are numerous stats that could prove just how well Payne has played. He hits for average as well as for power, and has blazing speed on the bases that makes him a threat to run each and every time he reaches. But what sets him apart,

his coach said, is an insatiable hunger to be even better. “Once you start to think you’ve got this figured out, that’s when you get passed and when you stop getting better,” Schmidt said. “(Braylon) has got that makeup and constant hunger to improve. This is the kind of season that a lot of guys could really hang their hat on – but he’s still got that hunger.” Most notably, Payne said he changed his approach at the plate this season. Or more accurately, developed one. “Really, I just started focusing on trying to hit the ball as hard as I can, and it’s been working out,” Payne said. “When I go up to bat, I know if I can hit a ball hard somewhere, it does the job. Last year, I didn’t really have an approach (at all).” As a center fielder and hitter, Payne said he models his game after MLB Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. And his evolution already reminds his coach of Griffey, Schmidt said, in more ways than one. Along with the inherent natural ability that enables his performance on the diamond, Payne is always wearing a smile on his face no matter the situation according to his coach. And while it may pass under the radar for many, it’s a crucial part of why he’s been so successful. “That’s where the grounded (nature) comes from, because he just loves to play the game of baseball,” Schmidt said. “… You can tell that his love for the game, and the fact that he’s having fun at all times, keeps him focused on the process.” Payne said earlier this month he knows his game isn’t close to its full potential – and that drive to maximize it is what keeps him grinding every day. “I just tell myself that I haven’t done anything yet,” he said. “I realize that I still have a lot more room for growth.”

Consecutive Foster no-hitters highlight performances on diamond By Landan Kuhlmann LKUHLMANN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

No-hitters are rare. Even more rare? Doing so in backto-back games, at any level. But that’s exactly what the Richmond Foster Falcons accomplished last week. The Falcons swept a pair of games from Hightower last week, holding the Hurricanes hitless in both outings. Chase Batten held it down on April 12 with 11 strikeouts in a 100 win, while Jackson Low also accomplished the feat paired with seven strikeouts in an 11-1 win on April 14. Elsewhere in 24-5A, Rosenberg Terry rallied from down three runs in the seventh inning to walk off against Angleton (5-4) on April 12 to keep its hold

on the district’s final playoff spot. There was also a shakeup in District 20-6A, as the Austin Bulldogs used a seventh-inning triple from Harrison Golden and subsequent single from Will Liner to walk-off district-leading Ridge Point on April 12. In softball action, the Elkins Lady Knights inched closer to their first playoff berth in six seasons with an 11-8 win over Dulles on April 12 thanks to three runs in the seventh inning. Elsewhere, George Ranch recovered from a late Ridge Point rally to knock off the Lady Panthers 5-4 in nine innings on April 12 on the strength of four hits and four RBIs from Karrlauhn Deas. I am a 76-pound shepherd mix who just wants a place to call home. I like to say HI when someone walks by my kennel in my very deep woof - please don't let that scare you off, I am just a vocal guy. Not only am I handsome, but I'm smart too! I know "SIT", "SHAKE", and loveeeeee playing with balls. Seriously I don't even let them go when I'm getting belly scratched. I don't have much energy, I just need a walk and some playtime to wear myself out, after that, I'm all about relaxing. My heartworm treatment has been fully sponsored!

Cross Creek Ranch holding Saturday arts market By Adam Zuvanich AZUVANICH@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

The work of more than 20 Houston-area artists and artisans will be on display and available for purchase this Saturday at the Cross Creek Ranch Art Market & Home Tour in Fulshear. The free event is scheduled for 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Cross Creek Ranch Welcome Center, 6450 Cross Creek Bend Ln. In addition to art, music, refreshments and family-friendly activ-

ities, there also will be 15 professionally decorated model homes open for touring. The original artwork and handcrafted items to be featured include paintings, sculptures, woodwork, jewelry, soaps and wreaths. The participating artists and artisans often exhibit their work in Houston at the First Saturday Arts Market and The Market at Sawyer Yards. Among them is Fulshear resident Eugenia Algaze Garcia of Mindful Art.

“What makes the art market unique is that all the art and handcrafted items exhibited are original creations,” Rob Bamford, general manager of Cross Creek Ranch, said in a news release. “Attendees are sure to find a one-of-a-kind piece to wear or display in their home.” Cuisine from food trucks such as Pak Man and Mary Had a Little Party will be available for purchase. The event also will include music, face painting, balloon and

caricature artists as well as “giant art photo opportunities.” For more information, visit www.crosscreektexas.com/artmarket.

H SOCCER FROM PAGE 1 from this season’s team including Maldonado – their leading scorer – but will likely return players such as second-leading scorer Jonathan Rivas. Maldonado and senior defender Daniel Torres were named to the Class 4A boys’ alltournament squad. And though it may have ended with a painful memory that will sting for the near future, Perez said he was determined to help his team focus on what they accomplished energizing a community that buoyed their play throughout the postseason, with fan buses and student sections cheering them on. “ I reminded them ‘you made history.’ When you look back at this season, there’s a lot to be proud of,” he said. “...I have a lot of thanks and appreciation towards all the fans, families, and friends we had with us all season long.” Ridge Point girls fall in extra time Later in the week, the Ridge Point Lady Panthers’ quest for perfection came to an end with a 4-2 loss to Rockwall in extra time on Friday morning. The Lady Panthers took an early lead Friday thanks to a goal from University of Houston commit Charlotte Richardson in the 12th minute, then got a late equalizer from Dayo Tennyson in the 76th minute to force extra time. However, they eventually succumbed to the Yellowjackets’ attack, which scored twice in the last five minutes of extra time to come away with the win. Ridge Point finished the program’s historic season with a 26-1 record and the first state trip in school

The Star requested a copy of the grievance filed by the chief financial officer, a copy of the contract executed between the district and outside law firm and written correspondence about the superintendent’s contract among board members and administrators. Holsapple last week said the board hadn’t received any updates about the progress of the investigation since hiring the law firm, but

H JACKSON FROM PAGE 1 investigation into allegations surrounding him. The motion to place Jackson on leave came shortly after Councilperson Vashaundra Edwards made a motion to dismiss Jackson. Edwards asserted her motion was based on evidence released during the closed session that Jackson had allegedly violated the city’s charter requirements about ethical tenets and hiring and firing individuals in his office. Aside from those brief comments that prefaced a 6-1 vote in favor of plac-

history. Main - who was also the District 20-6A Most Valuable Player - and Tennyson were named to the UIL’s Class 6A girls’ all-tournament team for the Lady Panthers. “It really was a roller coaster the entire match,” head coach Evelyn Torres said. “...The girls showed a relentless effort. I’m just so proud of them and how hard they’ve worked to get to where we were. We couldn’t have asked for any more from them.” Six seniors – Kaia Brown, Carlyle Burch, Megan Mercado, Emily Warnken, Devon Roundtree, and Lauren Walker – will graduate from a Lady Panthers squad that helped usher in history for the school. However, they look to be well set for another run next season with plenty of firepower returning. Among likely returners for Ridge Point include Oklahoma commit Zoe Main and Tennyson as well as defender Georgia Mulholland (Baylor), Richardson, and forward Hannah Warnken. Also set to return are goalkeepers Molly Thompson and Alicia Audu, who helped the Lady Panthers with 23 combined clean sheets over the course of the season. Ridge Point will likely start next season as one of the favorites to make it back to Georgetown again - a feat Torres believes they are prepared to achieve. “I think we’ve created a great foundation, a great journey for the girls to achieve knowing that we’ve already walked this path before, and we can walk it again,” Torres said. “It’s going to take more effort, more energy, more everything – because we’re going to have the target on our back next year.”

said he hoped more details would arrive soon. “I’m concerned because the longer it takes, the more money it’s going to cost the district,” he said. “It takes funding away from school kids.” In Holsapple’s telling, the district is in possession of two superintendent contracts prepared by different law firms. The purpose of the investigation is to determine which of the two is valid, he said. “I’m here to assure everyone that there’s no issue where the board wants to get rid of the superintendent,” he said. Even if the investi-

ing Jackson on leave, no one associated with the city has provided more information about what led to the sudden reversal regarding Jackson’s tenure. Jackson has not responded to requests for comment as of Monday afternoon. The city has not responded to the Star’s open records request for a letter detailing allegations against Jackson that was filed 12 days ago. By law, the city has up to 10 days to respond to that request by either providing the document or filing an appeal with the Texas Attorney General’s Office. That deadline is set for

Africa. “It’s an honor,” said Sandy Ferguson, Alyssa’s mother. “It’s been five years since she passed, and to know she’s still remembered and had such an incredible heart is an incredible legacy. Every kid who walks through the doors of the school will have a chance to see what she has done and realize that, even as a kid, they can make a difference in the world, in their school and in their communities.” The Ferguson family had only moved to Fort Bend County in August 2013, and Alyssa Ferguson enrolled at Baines Middle School in FBISD, her father, Scott Ferguson, shared with the Fort Bend Star last week. From the beginning, Alyssa Ferguson was cut from a different cloth than many other students. “She always had a heart for others,” Scott Ferguson said. “Even as a little kid, when we’d pass someone who was homeless, she’d always say, ‘We have an extra room, why can’t they just stay with us?’” Alyssa Ferguson was diagnosed in January 2014 with medulloblastoma, a brain tumor with an 80 percent treatment success rate, Scott Ferguson said. “We just never dreamed we’d be in that 20 percent,” he said. “You assume those 20 percent are those with additional medical issues.” While doctors have a lot of success against the type of tumor, they only have one treatment for it, Scott Ferguson explained. If that doesn’t work, there aren’t many other options, he said. Over coming months and years, Alyssa Ferguson’s life became a series of radiation treatments, doctors’ visits and surgeries, Scott Ferguson said. But through it all, Alyssa Ferguson remained devoted to school and maintaining a positive attitude, he said. “She became friends with all the other kids going through treatment,” he said. “There was one boy there from China who didn’t speak English. She didn’t speak his language, so she downloaded a language app and became friends with him. He came to the house for dinner one time.” And even as more of her time be-

gation determines the district had been using the wrong contract, Holsapple said he is confident board members would work with Bostic to keep him in place. “The superintendent is doing a bangup job, and we’re happy with him,” he said. “A couple of board members may have other feelings, but I can say that’s not the general consensus.” Board member Dawn Reichling did not respond to a request for comment about the matter as of Monday afternoon. Per the terms of the superintendent’s contract signed in February 2021

Wednesday. Jackson earns a yearly salary of about $210,000, in addition to a $600 per month vehicle allowance and a $90 per month phone allowance, according to public documents. The city council authorized spending $23,000 on a search firm before it hired Jackson, whose two predecessors, Anthony Snipes and Odis Jones, were given severance payments totaling almost $1 million. Snipes was fired in a 4-3 vote by the council in February 2020, and Jones’ subsequent tenure ended with a 5-2 vote to fire him in April 2021.

came occupied with trips to doctors and trials in Boston and elsewhere, Alyssa Ferguson worked to keep up at school, her family said. “She kept fighting and kept going to school the entire time,” Scott Ferguson said. “She made good grades, was in band and involved in church and her youth group. She stayed active all the way until she went into hospice.” Some of Alyssa Ferguson’s actions during her battle with brain cancer left an indelible impression on elected leaders in Fort Bend County as well. “I learned about this incredible young lady when I heard what Alyssa did with her wish from Make-A Wish Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana,” former U.S. Rep. Pete Olson said. Where many children use their make-a-wish to meet a favorite athlete or visit somewhere, Alyssa Ferguson opted to use hers to build a well in a village in Zimbabwe called Murehwa. Alyssa Ferguson came up with the idea because, years earlier, she’d read a book called “A Long Walk to Water” by Linda Sue Park and decided this was her opportunity to help, Scott Ferguson said. “Amazingly, she told Scott and Sandy that, ‘The only reason I got this wish is because I got sick. I should use it to help someone. I didn’t earn it,’” Olson said. Alyssa Ferguson’s family held out hope that she would eventually recover and they would all take a visit to the village, they said. after Alyssa’s death, where they discovered what a difference the well made in the lives of the villagers, they said. “It was just beautiful to see how water was changing the whole village,” Scott Ferguson said. The population of the village has almost doubled in the years since, and more children have been able to attend school because the well sits next to a school, Scott Ferguson said. Before, they had to spend their days traversing to a water hole, but now can attend classes and fill jugs of water on their way home, he said. To keep their daughter’s memory alive, the family has set up a foundation to continue building wells, Scott Ferguson said. The foundation is called the Alyssa Ferguson WorldChangers Fund, and it has helped build eight wells and counting across the world, including ones in Myanmar, India, Haiti and South Sudan, Scott Ferguson said. Now, the Fergusons hope that generations of students will have the opportunity to learn from their daughter’s example, they said. And the Fort Bend County community was unanimous in agreeing the honor was well-deserved. “For those of you that never knew Alyssa, I want you to know this is a beautiful recognition from Fort Bend Independent School District,” said Sugar Land Councilperson William Ferguson, who is not related to Alyssa.

Review: Lupitas shows why it is Sugar Land staple By Matt deGrood

Lazy Dog expanding to Stafford By Landan Kuhlmann

MDEGROOD@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Some of my fondest memories involve long conversation among friends over a bowl of chips, some salsa and tasty Mexican food. On a recent trip to Lupitas Mexican Restaurant in Sugar Land, 3121 State Highway 6, I couldn’t help but notice the place’s potential for that sort of hometown Tex-Mex experience. Almost deliberately, the flashiest thing about the Sugar Land staple is this abundance of pinatas and wild art on the ceiling and brightly-colored placemats. This isn’t the sort of place to experiment with atypical combinations of flavors and fusion foods that have become so popular elsewhere in the Houston region. Rather, Lupitas sticks to the basics and largely nails them. I spent some time reviewing the menu, and considering several different menu items. If my visit hadn’t happened on a weekday work lunch, you can bet I would have added a margarita to the order as well (it certainly seemed tempting even then, once I’d glanced at two patrons at a nearby table enjoying several). Ultimately, I settled on the green chicken enchiladas plate that came with rice and beans along with the two chicken enchiladas. The portions were generous and came atop a hot

plate that would remain so through the entirety of my visit (as I would discover when I tried to lift it to take leftovers). A big bowl of chips and solid salsa gave me an opportunity to pregame the meal I was about to eat, and thus have enough leftovers for lunch the next day. The enchiladas themselves were solid. The sauce tended on the sweeter side that provided an interesting contrast to the melty excellence of the Monterey jack cheese and the chicken waiting inside.

The rice and beans also served their purpose, providing some additional flavors and textures to serve as a change of pace to the sweetness of the enchiladas. All in all, I enjoyed my visit to Lupitas. It’s easy to see how this Sugar Land restaurant has evolved into a community staple during its decades in business. After all, no city is complete without the sort of homey Tex-Mex restaurant that’s the perfect place to settle in with friends and family to swap stories and overindulge on
