EDITOR’S PREVIEW Joe Southern Editor

Why you should be a believer in bioenergetics

At

first I was skeptical of bioenergetics, but now I’m a believer. To be honest, it sounded like some far out, new age, Asian mystic hoodoo to me. Energy waves? Acupressure points? Yeah, whatever. As Dr. Ferryl McClain started explaining it to me, I began to grasp the concept. Then she demonstrated her BioScan machine on me. The results were stunning; they freaked me out! Without knowing anything about me or my medical conditions, she accurately detected nearly every single problem I was having and even found some I didn’t know about. To do the scan, she attached a small device to my shirt so it touched my chest. She then wet a paper towel, wrapped it around a brass rod, which I held in my hand. Taking out a small probe, she touched it to different points on each of my fingers and toes. That was it. The computer

did the rest of the work. This blend of Eastern and Western medicine evaluated the energy levels of my organs and different bodily systems and accurately detected problems I was having. It gave insights into undetected problems I was having. With a little more detective work and follow-up visits with my doctor and referred specialists, I’m beginning to make changes in my life that will make me healthier and happier. These are changes I would have never known to make had I not had the bioenergetic scan. Please, do not just take my word for it. I want you to read the story inside this edition of the Fort Bend Business Journal and then consider for yourself if taking proactive measures to improve your health and quality of life are worth the investment.

Fort Bend ISD focuses on giving small businesses a chance By Theresa D. McClellan Theresa@Fortbendstar.com When Fort Bend County’s largest employer speaks, people listen. So when the Fort Bend Independent School District (FBISD) wanted to make sure that small businesses had an opportunity to participate in the contracting and procurement of construction jobs, they set an annual goal of 25 percent participation from small business. Big businesses listened and the school district exceeded its goal as small business owners nabbed $48 million worth of contracts, according to Jeannette Boleware, the district’s Small Business Enterprise Program (SBEP) coordinator. A large part of their success is thanks to Boleware who was recently recognized by The Greater Houston Business Procurement Forum Committee with the R.A. Wiltz Minority Business Advocate of

Small business entrepreneurs learn what it takes to get a school district contract. (Photo by Theresa D. McClellan) the Year Award. Boleware was honored because of her contributions to the minority business community in the Houston area. To make sure small business owners have a place at the table, Boleware hosts information and networking sessions that attract big businesses looking for

certified sub-contractors and small business owners eager to prove their worth. “Whatever we do, we should create an environment conducive for learning,” Boleware said. “Not only should we have an excellent teacher in the classroom, we should have an excellent classroom environment for that student to succeed. That means state-of-the-art building, state-of-the-art furniture, state-of-the-art IT and state-of-the-art teacher.” “I’m very passionate about growing businesses because if our businesses are growing, it’s a better future business for our children. We can lead by example and this is something our children can see,” she said. The FBISD Board of Trustees adopted SBEP after voters approved the $484 million bond in 2014. Those projects are still ongoing and primary contractors must use “good faith efforts” to hire certified small business as subcontractors SMALL BUSINESS CONTINUES pg 13

Fort Bend Star shines brightly at 40 By Joe Southern Jsouthern@Fortbendstar.com A Georgia peanut farmer was in the White House, Grease was the word, and disco was king 40 years ago when a “West Texas broad” named Beverly Carter published the first edition of a weekly newspaper called The Southwest Star. Today The Fort Bend Southwest Star, commonly called The Fort Bend Star, serves a community vastly different than the small towns that dotted Fort Bend County in 1978 when Carter set out on a mission to “provide news of local events, meetings, and honors, and to provide a media through which local businessmen and merchants can reach the consumer.” Sugar Land, Missouri City, Stafford, and other communities of eastern Fort Bend County have grown and changed significantly since the launch of the Star, but the newspaper’s mission has never changed. “We pride ourselves on being a free

publication. We love delivering a product to our readers and doing it for the sake of keeping our community informed,” said Jonathan McElvy, who, with Frank Vasquez, purchased the Star last year and have been publishing it since 2014. When Carter began printing the paper from an office at the corner of Murphy Road and Highway 90A, she began with a staff of of Delivering the News 10, including herself, her children Michael Fredrickson and Sherry Nitsch, and seven other women, 10am -2pm mostly former teachers and many of them Texas Tech alumna. “We hate to admit it, and it is probably not very professional to do so, but we feel 12016 University Blvd, Sugar Land it is our duty to inform you that the Free Admission Sponsorships and SOUTHWEST STAR is for the first 200 Vendor Space available the latest in a long attendees, succession of harethen reduced CALL TODAY! brained moneyadmission until 2pm 281-690-4200. making schemes that

the group pictured above has attempted. We only hope it will not be as ill fated as some of the others,” Carter wrote in her first opinion piece, written as an introduction of the staff. Eventually she penned a regular column called Bev’s Burner, where the she kept the heat on local politicians and the pressing issues of the day. Carter passed away in 2013, recognized statewide as a pioneer for women in journalism with a reputation for her dogged pursuit of the truth and accountability in local government. “She was feisty, determined and unflappable in her quest to give the community a voice in their government. She started the newspaper by pounding the streets, council chambers, government offices and beer joints of Fort Bend to bring her readers some insight into their community through her fledgling newspaper,” the Star wrote in an obituary. As the Star rose in prominence in the community, Carter branched out. She started the Fort Bend Business Journal in 1982 and in the 1990s she launched the Fort Bend Community TV cable channel as well as Star Digital Studios, a video production company, which was operated by her daughter until her untimely death STAR ANNIVERSARY CONTINUES pg 21

SMALL BUSINESS CONTINUED from pg 2

for their construction and renovation projects. To bring the two together, Boleware holds informative sessions and focus groups open to contractors, subcontractors and other small businesses that are interested in partnering with the district and learning more about projects included in Phase 3 of the 2014 Bond Program. Attendees also learn more about construction and non-construction small business opportunities. “Every time I come I find another nugget, as she calls them. She (Boleware) makes sure the workshops are valuable,” said Robin Boykin, an independent land consultant and business development specialist with EOG Resources. She works with IT and live mobile technology. For Michael Doucette of E Contractors USA LLC, the sessions help him build relationships and make connections. E Contractors is a small business that was named among the top 25 businesses in SubContractors USA. With a staff of 32 people, it is one of the fastest growing small businesses in the country. “We are a small business and we help

pass on to other small businesses. There is a lot to learn so get ready for the big world,” Doucette said. Doucette appreciates the learning available because potential subcontractors are hearing the same message about requirements and how they can easily be disqualified for a contract if they have not followed the paperwork rules. For example, some subcontractors need to carry $1 million in liability insurance as opposed to the $25,000 they maintain for private jobs. “There are needs for copper guys, electricians, framers. I’ll give it to somebody so this is a good place to be,” said Doucette. For Jacobs Engineering Project Manager Gaurav Agarwal, the June 27 meeting was a chance to explain the number of projects remaining in Phase III of the 2014 bond. They range in size from the $9 million worth of renovations and construction at Mission Glen and Walker Station elementaries and Garcia and Hodges Bend middle schools to the $44 million construction of the career and technology center. “We are not contractors or architects. We are the eyes and ears making sure the

NOW OPEN

work gets done on time,” said Agarwal. All solicitations issued by the district include a Small Business Program Participation Form (Section J) that is to be completed and submitted with the bid response. The section asks for the small business classification of the business entity. The section also asks each business entity to state if it will be performing alone or will be using subcontractors. All prospective construction general contractors shall submit with their solicitation response a Small Business Plan. The Plan should include information concerning subcontracting opportunities the subcontractor will pursue if awarded a contract with FBISD. Workshops are held each month for those who are interested in partnering with FBISD. To find out when the next workshop is, or for more information on the program, visit www.fortbendisd.com/ Page/920 or call Jeanette Boleware at 281327-7697.

The Magic Touch

BIOENERGETICS LETS YOUR BODY TELL YOU HOW IT’S DOING

COVER STORY

BY JOE SOUTHERN

If

you want to know what’s going on inside your body, just let Dr. Ferryl McClain touch your fingers and toes with her magic wand. Actually, the probe she uses is neither magic nor a wand but it might as well be given the detailed and highly accurate assessment of the body her BioScan machine produces with just a simple touch. The technology is a blend of Eastern and Western medicine that has been around for decades but largely ignored in American medicine. McClain, a pharmacist in Missouri City, wants to change that. “The science has been around for about 30 years. It started in Europe,” she said, noting that it is commonly used in South America, the Far East, and Canada but is almost unheard of in this country. “In America it’s like a totally new concept,” she said. “I feel like it’s more accurate than a typical blood test.” Her bioenergetic office is located inside Haeckerville Pharmacy near Sienna Parkway and Highway 6. There she uses her BioScan machine, which measures the body’s energy levels through acupressure point readings. The process involves having a connector placed on the patient’s chest while the patient holds a brass rod in one hand. McClain uses a probe to touch each acupressure point on the patient’s fingers and toes. The computer analyzes the data and produces a very detailed report. The report reveals physical and emotional stressors and any imbalances in organs, glands, and other body systems. It also scans medications and pairs them specifically with any detected condition. “It tells you not just the right drug, but the right dosage,” she said. She said having an accurate report and pairing it with the correct medication, whether they’re prescription, over the counter (OTC), or natural vitamins and supplements, can save a patient time and money. “Taking the wrong drug period, including herbal and OTC, can actually set you back physically and financially,” she said. Since only a medical physician can

14

diagnose and treat a medical condition, she can assist with referrals. “I am basically a concierge pharmacist and will not only figure out what the correct prescription drug protocol is for them but also contact all the necessary providers,” she said. “I will examine all the natural health options out there and match them to what they actually need which will save money and increase vitality of life.” Vernishia Glenn of Houston first went to McClain about two years ago to be evaluated for medical issues she was having. “The report coincided with my medical August 2018 H The Fort Bend Business Journal

report,” she said. “She (McClain) knew things that were going on with me that I didn’t tell her.” It also revealed something ominous. “She said I had parasites,” Glenn said. McClain was able to pair a medication to combat the problem. “She told me things that were working within me that the doctors were not picking up,” Glenn said. Not only did McClain discover the parasites, she successfully reversed the situation. “After a month the parasites were gone,”

she said. There were other issues that Glenn’s bioenergetic scan revealed and she has been working with McClain to remedy each condition. “It’s awesome technology and I’m glad to have been introduced to it,” she said. McClain was introduced to bioenergetics 18 years ago when she developed panic attacks during a pregnancy while living in Tennessee. As a second-generation pharmacist, she became intrigued by the technology and is now one of its biggest ambassadors and expert in the science. She purchased her machine 18 years ago and has successfully used it on herself, family members, and numerous clients. She said it has an incredibly high rate of accuracy. That’s why it baffles her why more doctors and other allied healthcare professionals are not using it. “My dream is that pharmacists will take ownership of bioenergetic screening since it can ensure successful medication outcomes,” she said. “Also, we can use this technology to triage patients to get them into either preventative care mode or refer them to an immediate medical physician care mode if they have a health issue they are unaware of.” Over the years McClain has helped people discover conditions they knew nothing about. One of those people is Mike Aldrete, a pharmacy owner in the Houston area. “The machine kept saying there was something about my left arm,” he said. “It came up as probable skin cancer on my left arm. I thought it was crazy. Look at me, I’m fine.” Then he remembered having a blister on his left elbow that wouldn’t heal. “She advised me to see a dermatologist. It was developing into skin cancer, I believe” Aldrete said. With a zinc salve matched to his condition by the computer, he was able to heal the condition. “It’s gone now and it never came back,” he said. It also detected a problem with his blood pressure, which he is now treating. “The machine is a miracle. More people need to know about this machine,” he said. He said it changed his life. “Imagine seeing a lot of specialists all at one time,” he said. Bioenergetics combines the ancient Chinese methods of acupuncture with biofeedback technology. McClain said each part of the body emits electrical energy, The Fort Bend Business Journal H August 2018

which the machine detects. It detects imbalances and stressors in organs, glands, and other systems of the body and can tell if issues are new and developing or if they’ve been a problem for years. “The best time to make changes about your health is when you’re feeling good and healthy,” she said. The BioScan, she said, is a great tool for catching health problems before they manifest themselves physically. The report she gets back is colorcoded, indicating the health of the organ or system tested. Green is healthy, yellow is stressed, red is weakened and black is critical. “People get their results a lot faster than a blood test and it gets to the root of the problem,” McClain said. “The data is instant.” She said most BioScan machines in use in the country are used by

chiropractors, acupuncturists, and naturopaths, but in a capacity limited to the work they do. McClain offers different packages ranging from $111 to $777. People who want a simple evaluation of their health can get the $111 scan, and if they want to upgrade to find a solution the cost is another $111. The most popular package is MSA Level 2 – Team Defense, which scans the body and determines which drugs work best. The cost is $222. Because it’s not mainstream medical technology, insurance companies do not cover the cost up front yet, however, some may reimburse the expense. McClain said if the patient has a pre-tax medical card, such as a Flex Card, they could use that to pay for the service because she is a pharmacist. “Bioenergetics saves money and mental stress in navigating all the prescription and OTC options out there and protection from things we Bioenergetic Pharmacist may be doing to Haeckerville Pharmacy, ourselves that 9402 Highway 6, Suite 400, Missouri City we are not Phone: 832-628-6894 aware of,” she Email: info@bioeworks.com said. Schedule an appointment: www.bioenergeticworks.as.me.

In most cases, ailments McClain discovers are many times caused by mismatched daily usage of OTC drugs, vitamins and herbs. The BioScan detects which are the correct daily vitamins and herbal supplements. She noted however, that not all products are equal. “I will use the BioScan to match you with right product, which could easily save up to $1,500 yearly in avoiding products that don’t work and implementing products that do work,” she said. While visiting McClain at Haeckerville Pharmacy, visitors can enjoy an oldfashioned soda fountain, shop for gifts, and find a wide variety of healthcare products for sale, including the drugs, vitamins, and supplements recommended through the BioScan. Owned by Waylon Haecker, the pharmacy has a warm, inviting atmosphere and offers curbside service. To learn more about bioenergetics, contact McClain at www.bioeworks.com, call 832-628-6894, email info@bioeworks. com or visit her at Haeckerville Pharmacy, 9402 Highway 6, Suite 400, Missouri City. from pneumonia in 2011. Carter and the Star won numerous state and national awards over the years, with the halls and walls of the former office on Techniplex Drive covered with plaques and certificates and numerous others stuffed in boxes and tucked into corners. “County residents have consistently been able to obtain in-depth reporting from the straight shooting Carter, along with her unique take on politics, policy, community, religion and virtually any other subject that intrigued her. Known for her strong sense of public integrity, Bev and her ‘Star’ reporters pounded the pavement in Fort Bend to bring their readers insightful and concise information about their community,” the newspaper wrote in Carter’s obituary. “News without spin was the norm from Carter, and her investigative

reporting brought much notoriety to the small, community newspaper that grew into a staple of the Fort Bend community.” On occasion, Carter made the news, having been interviewed for the television shows “48 Hours” and “Nightline.” She also filmed a segment for Discovery ID’s “Behind Mansion Walls.” The episode aired shortly after her passing. Over the years, the Star changed with technology. From its early days as a black and white publication with pages made up on large, paper paste-up grids, the newspaper moved into the computerized era, added color, and continued to improve print quality and capabilities. As the Internet age emerged, the Star kept up with the times, creating an online presence at www. fortbendstar.com. Today, the Star has added social media sites on Facebook and Twitter. Between the print and digital worlds, the Star’s audience has never been bigger. August 2018 H The Fort Bend Business Journal

“More people read the content of The Fort Bend Star now than they ever have in the 40-year history of this publication, McElvy said. “The same can be said for the Houston Chronicle, the New York Times and the Podunk Daily Bugler. There isn’t a newspaper anywhere in this nation that doesn’t have more readers today than it did 10 years ago. Frank Vasquez, publisher of the Star, said the newspaper remains a vital media for businesses to get their message out to people. “We reach a broad spectrum of the community, he said. “The Star is delivered to 35,000 households in Fort Bend County, plus we have our online readers from the website and social media followers. Our combined audience continues to grow. That makes us the oldest, most reliable and viable source for local businesses to advertise their products and services. The Fort Bend Business Journal H August 2018

Although newspapers in general are struggling for financial stability in a time of rising costs and shrinking revenues, their role as government watchdogs, community flag-wavers, and a marketplace for goods, services, and ideas has never been more important at the community level than they are today. The first 40 years of The Fort Bend Star have been a remarkable journey and the years to come promise to be filled with wonder, excitement, intrigue, and prosperity. “Our job is not to chase down national politicians. We aren’t responsible for printing dossiers. We don’t have an editorial staff of hundreds who each take two weeks to write one story on a favorite cause, McElvy said. “What we do is so much different, and I humbly believe it is so much more important for the people who live and work in our community.
