AMANITA
Amanita is a smart & spunky girl who would make an AMAZING best friend forever! An amazing volunteer took her home for the thanksgiving holiday and here is what they said about their furry house guest: Amanita is the best girl!! We loved having her in our home, she was the perfect house guest. She is dog-friendly (her and my dog have the same exact play style, so they LOVED each other). She seems to be potty trained! She didn’t have a single accident in the house. We were home the whole time but we didn’t crate her while she was with us and she slept through the night really well without accidents. She LOVES toys. It looked like she had a toy bender - literally played with every single dog toy we had. She loves squeakies/plushies (and takes them to cuddle with), chew toys/bones, literally every kind of toy. She loves tug of war, too! Adopt Amanita: https://bit.ly/3XPgYmX

Ana Hernandez, of Splendora, somewhat haltingly came forward. Admitting she was nervous, she said she was there in honor of her son, Marine Lance Cpl. Armando Hernandez, who died on June 29 while serving on Okinawa.
"This year it has been hard to hold our hearts together," she said. "We thank you so much."
Jana Dunkel Owens, mother of Marine Cpl. Casey Owens, was a featured speaker.
Owens spoke movingly about her son, who as a youngster decided he wanted to become a Marine because he admired the dress blue uniform.
While serving during the war in Iraq, the vehicle he was riding in struck a "double-stacked" improvised explosive device. The ensuing explosion caused Casey to suffer multiple, severe injuries.
Owens said that while her son had to undergo several surgeries and reha-
bilitation stays over many years at different Veterans Administration hospitals, he always tired to cheer up his fellow veterans and stand up for them if he felt they weren't being treated with respect.
She said her son, despite his normally positive outlook, experienced bouts of depression and addition until he ultimately became "one of the 29." He was buried at Arlington Cemetery in Washington, D.C. "He was my hero," she said.
Following the speeches, the gathered dignitaries removed the black cloth covering the monument, followed by a bugler playing "Taps."
Members of the Gold Star Families in attendance were next invited to place flowers at the base of the monument, followed by a moving rendition of "God Bless America" sung my Kayleigh McCarter, the 2022 Jr. Sugar Land Super Star.

Last week, on the 81st anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack, I reported on the unveiling ceremony of the new Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Sugar Land Memorial Park. The monument honors the families of U.S. service members who have lost their lives to wounds they have suffered.
It was a somber event, as you might expect. But with the late-afternoon sun providing a Golden Hour backdrop to the proceedings, it was very moving.
I mentioned in my introductory column a few weeks ago that I'm a veteran of the U.S. Navy. I was a Navy Journalist aboard the USS Ranger, an aircraft carrier based in San Diego, California.
During my five-year hitch, I made three deployments
to the Western Pacific and the Persian Gulf, including Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
As I like to point out whenever I discuss my time in the Navy, nothing I did was particularly heroic. As a Journalist (that job title doesn't exist anymore, having been subsumed into a new rating called Mass Communications Specialist), I worked in the ship's Public Information Office.
Among our duties, we wrote stories and press releases, put out the ship's newspaper, operated the ship's television station, interacted with the civilian media.
When two Gold Family mothers spoke at the event at Sugar Land Memorial Park, I thought back to Operation Desert Storm. While I personally never experienced any particular danger, I knew how concerned members of my family were.
Their remarks resonated strongly.
While I never thought of the military as a lifetime career and left after my first enlistment, I knew that it was a valuable experience to have had when I was young, and never regretted having joined.
Eager to rejoin civilian life, I didn't expect to ever miss being in the Navy, living full-time in cramped spaces aboard a huge ship with a working airport just a few decks (that's "floors," to you landlubbers) above my head.
After a year or so in other jobs, I took my first reporting job at a small suburban newspaper in
San Diego (just a stone's throw from the huge San Diego Naval Station). Not long afterward, though, I returned to my hometown of Houston and ultimately resumed by journalism careeer.
And while I often thought back fondly to my Navy days, and drew upon those experiences sometimes in my reporting and writing, I didn't believe the military had much relevance to my current life. That is, until a few years ago.
Like many of you, I have watched in disappointment as the partisan divide in this nation (which has always existed to some extent) has become more and more infused with vitriol and distrust. Sometimes, despite my best efforts,
I've allowed myself to take part in that. The reasons behind this new divisiveness have been examined by people much smarter than me, and are far too complex to delve into in this column.
Back when I served, I don't remember a lot of political discussion among my shipmates, event during election seasons. As it happened, I served under three Presidents of both major parties - Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, and Bill Clinton. They were each our Commander-inChief, and we followed the orders they gave.
Even after the quick, decisive victory in Operation Desert Storm, we could all laugh at Dana Carvey's impersonation of Bush on "Saturday Night Live."
When I think about those days, what I think about most is the values that the military imparted: devotion to duty, honor, respect, accountability. I don't remember anyone demonizing people of different political leanings.
It's been a long time since I served in the military, and I don't have any firsthand experience with what it's like there now.
There have been reports of a rise in extremism in the ranks. I'd like to believe that is the exception, not the rule. My instincts tell me that must be true.

Review: Juicy Seafood Buffet offers solid variety of options
a futuristic feel.
When I went to college, there was a Chinese buffet restaurant across the street from campus. Truth be told, it wasn't the most inviting place to eat, but the food was plentiful and reasonably priced, which of course is what's most important to college students. I knew people who practically lived there.
Making my rounds along the Highway 6 corridor in recent weeks, I noted the Grand Opening of a new Chinese restaurant, Juicy Seafood Buffet. It seemed a great place to try my hand in my new vocation of writing restaurant reviews.
The restaurant, in the space of a similar buffet that closed early in the pandemic, beats my old college haunt by miles in terms of decor. It's a big, open space, but with partitions cordoning off sections to give them a somewhat more intimate feel. The walls are darkly colored, and there is LED lighting along the ceiling to give place something of
When you go to a buffet, of course, the main point is the selection. And Juicy Seafood Buffet doesn't skimp on that score.
True to its name, the focus is on seafood. There is indeed a lot of it, in all kinds of varieties. Crab, lobster, shrimp, oysters, mussels - it's all there, cooked in various ways. If seafood is your thing, you're bound to find what you crave most.
There's also a full sushi bar, which I skipped on this visit but plan to check out on my next visit.
But it's not just seafood. You'll find all of your other favorite Asian buffet dishes, from chicken to beef, dim sum, traditional soups. There's also a section with dessert offerings, fruit and vegetables.
The atmosphere is convivial. People went about making their selections and returning to their tables. Toward the end of my meal, a nice Asian couple asked if was my first time there, and we struck up a nice conversation.
As to the prices. Juicy Seafood is a bit more expensive than similar places
I've been to, but I chalk that up to the more extensive variety of offerings. A typical college student might not make it an everyday hangout, but if you're in the mood for Asian-cooked seafood once in a while, this might be your pick.
