owdy y’all, and welcome to Sugar Land and Fort Bend County! We’re so glad to have you here. If you’re new to our little corner of paradise then there is a lot you need to know, so settle down into a comfy chair with a tall glass of iced tea and get ready to explore this amazing corner of the world we call home. One of the first things you’ll learn about people here in Sugar Land and our neighbors in Missouri City, Stafford, Meadows Place and everywhere else this side of the Brazos is we’re a little different. Actually, we’re a lot different. This is one of the biggest melting pots of race, religion and culture on the planet. That’s a good thing and something we’re mighty proud of. We are a healthy mix of blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, Indians, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Jews and/or probably a little Jedi, Sith, Vulcan or Klingon thrown in just for good measure. Seriously though, it’s not uncommon to see a mosque down the street from a church. In the summer of 2016, while the rest of the country was escalating racial violence and police were getting murdered, the

residents of Sugar Land came together in Town Square and with the blessings of prayers by a Joe Southern priest, imam and rabbi we held hands and made a video to challenge other cities to unite in their diversity. Not only did we set aside our differences as friends and neighbors, but we also found unity as we cheered our very own Sugar Land Skeeters baseball team to its first Atlantic League championship. We came together to celebrate the Olympic gold and silver medals brought home from Rio by favorite daughter Simone Manuel. We heaped praise on former Olympic champion Steven Lopez. We found a lot of cheer and celebrate throughout the year. Sugar Land is a worldclass city and a place where you can enjoy world-class entertainment in our new Smart Financial Centre, enjoy professional baseball at Constellation Field, tour numerous museums or spend some leisure time in one of our many parks. The city recently annexed Cullinan Park and is making huge im-

provements. New parks and trails are under development, including a new festival site and the second phase of the Brazos River Park, not far from the Smart Financial Centre and the city’s outdoor plaza there. When it comes to museums, we’ve got the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land and the new Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Museum. Later this year the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation Museum will open in a new, permanent home. Of course, all of this is tip-of-the-iceberg stuff when it comes to really exploring and appreciating everything Sugar Land has to offer. That’s why we invite you to flip through the pages of this guide to help you navigate all that our community has to offer. From Science on a Sphere to the Dig Pit, Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land has it all. With events for both children and adults, including field trips and exhibitions, there’s sure to be an activity for the entire family year round. The Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land opened in the fall of 2009, and has been expanding ever since. The sprawling area is a result of a public-private partnership between the City of Sugar Land, Sugar Land 4B Corporation, Newline Communities and the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The 43,000-squarefoot facility was once a dormitory and storage facility for the Central State Prison Farm. Completed in 1939, it is one of Sugar Land’s oldest existing buildings.

“The Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land is pleased to bring exciting science education exhibits to the Fort Bend community,” said Museum Director Adrienne Barker. “With attendance over 100,000 a year, visitors of all ages enjoy fossils, geodes, dinos, meteorites and more on display in our six exhibit halls. We encourage all science lovers to come explore.” Permanent exhibitions include the Life, Earth and Space Science exhibitions and The Hall of Paleontology and Discovery Works. The museum continually serves as a world-class science education resource in Fort Bend County. Other areas of interest at the museum include student labs, summer camps, and field trips. Highlights include a fullsize tyrannosaurus rex named Devil Rex, exotic frogs from several continents, a full-size Science on a Sphere globe – a 10-foot wide globe suspended from the atrium ceiling.

There’s also rare crystals from the Deccan Plateau in India, and an array of trilobites (or fossils) from around the world. Young paleontologists will enjoy the Dig Pit where children can uncover fossil replicas using small beach shovels provided by the museum. WHAT ARE THOSE? “These are carts volunteers open that contain ‘touchable’ artifacts,” mentioned Barker. “In the wildlife cart we have a zebra hoof, a leopard paw, an elephant tooth and a full skunk pelt. We have fabulous fossils in our paleo cart, as well.” All Scouts, including Webelos can earn their next merit badge, belt loop or pin with a little help from the many adventures and trails offered by the Houston Museum of Natural Science

Discover Fort Bend’s newest, interactive children’s center By Theresa D. McClellan For the Fort Bend Star

It’s sweet how an old sugar mill turned into a children’s museum can bring on the smiles. That’s exactly what happens at the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center in Sugar Land. The interactive museum located in the new Imperial Market, is an example of what can happen when a historic building is repurposed. At its grand opening last June, it attracted more than 2,500 visitors. Because the exhibits are continually changing, the museum continues to draw attention. All of the exhibits are used as platforms for learning for infants through children 12 years old, with specific measurable educational outcomes

for each. The curious child will be very happy. The popular museum was developed through massive community efforts including $4 million in gifts from 250 corporations. Johnson Development gave more than $5 million to restore the facility while the Houston Children’s Museum gave more than 10 years and over $1 million to make the center world class, said community promoter Nancy Olson who is also the wife of U.S. Rep. Pete Olson. The Discovery Center at 198 Kempner Street is located on the first floor of the old packaging warehouse for Imperial Sugar. The silos can be seen from U.S. 90. The museum is part of the redevelopment of the historic sugar mill being done by Johnson Development. In Kidtropolis youngsters can have their own city experience playing and learning

in pint-sized local businesses such as HEB supermarket, Wells Fargo Bank and a half of a Mercedes Benz. Visitors earn income by working in Kidtropolis and earning money in a way that models real life. By taking on the roles of producers, consumers and decision makers, the visitors get hands on experience with money management and financial planning. Other exhibits include How Does It Work,, Cyberchase, Dragons and Fairies, Tot Spot, Can I Do That and Faces of Fort Bend. Each of the titles draws the visitor into the museum. For example, the Dragons and Fairies is an exhibit on the culture and tradition of Vietnam. It uses traditional folktales as a vehicle to engage children and families in conversations, activities and resources related to learning more about Vietnam and the Vietnamese people. Cultural competency is important. During the week of Feb. 10-16 the center celebrated the “Spirit of Sankofa Wonderweek” to dive into African American History. On-going activities include making a straw rocket in honor of Mae C. Jemison, the first black female astronaut. Creating your own Gullah style quilt using colorful scraps of fabric. Plans are underway once

construction for Imperial Market is completed the Discovery Center will provide “PlayWorks” an outdoor playground where you leap, jump, crawl and climb up on the Discovery Center’s south side.

All activities and exhibits are included with the $12 admission per person. Children age 1 and under and Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center Members are admitted free of charge. Children

Sugar Land Town Square, in the heart of the City of Sugar Land, has shopping, community events, and great restaurants. Anchored by Sugar Land City Hall, the Square is growing with the community, while satisfying the varied tastes and styles of the population. The development of Sugar Land Town Square began in 2003 when Planned Community Developers partnered with the City of Sugar Land to create a new, unique downtown destination where Sugar Land residents could live, work, shop and relax. “Sugar Land Town Square is the heart of the community and a place where you can shop, dine, play and stay,” said Taylor Scott, event program manager for Sugar

Sugar Land dubbed ‘destination location’ after Smart Financial Centre opening By Subrata Barot For the Fort Bend Star

Newcomers to Fort Bend County and Sugar Land will experience fine living, dining, retail and recreation in the area – and many of the other suburbs of Houston provide the same. What other suburbs can’t provide, however, is the city’s newest, world-class and state-of-the-art indoor event and performance venue – Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land. Located on the corner of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard,

the $84 million Smart Financial Centre is a massive 200,000-square-foot facility, which is set to bring culture, the arts and the who’s who of Hollywood and Broadway to Fort Bend County. From Jerry Seinfeld, who graced the venue earlier this year at its grand opening with two standup comedy performances, to Reba McEntire – the performance venue has already hosted several high-profile stars. And A-list entertainers like Sting, Billy Crystal, Chris Rock, Santana, Journey and Rod Stewart are slated to perform in the coming months. “Smart Financial Centre offers residents and the

Greater Houston region the opportunity to attend firstclass performances in a state-of-the-art facility using the latest acoustics and audio visual technology,” Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman said. “It complements other venues such as our minor league ballpark, Constellation Field, home of the 2016 Atlantic League Champion Sugar Land Skeeters and our new festival site. It’s an ice rink but there is yearlong fun to be had at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center for public and private skaters. From ice hockey, figure skating and broomball to private parties for schools, churches, companies, friends and family, the center at 16225 Lexington Blvd. wants to be the coolest place in Sugar Land. They offer figure skating development and classes for beginners through

advanced levels. Competition shows, exhibitions, recitals and the U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills Program encourage participation from the young to the young at heart. They have a highly qualified professional coaching staff that includes national coaches and former World and Olympic competitors. Each coach is a member of at least one of the following organizations recognized worldwide: Ice Skating Institute, U.S. Figure Skating, U.S. Figure Skating Basic Skills and the Professional Skaters Asso-

ciation. Party planner Carrie Gould has summer events encouraging folks to bring their day camp attendees for pizza, ice skating, broomball or street hockey and 30-minute lessons. Scouts can come as a troop and earn a SLICE badge with any troop skate. Winter events include classes like The Mighty Mites, designed to teach the fundamentals of hockey skills from the basics of skating, building all the way up to game skills such as stick handling, passing and shooting. vate lessons, and Sugar Land Ice has youth and adult leagues as well as summer clinics and camps. The Legends of Music begins May 13 and registration ends March 1. The show is similar to the Nutcracker on Ice but with contemporary music featuring the works of Lady Gaga, Frank Sinatra, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Tina Turner, Elton John and Michael Jackson. Citizens of Sugar Land stood together Sunday afternoon on the steps of City Hall to proclaim to the world their unity in diversity and to challenge other communities to do the same. The event was hastily organized in the wake of shootings of police officers in Dallas the previous week and heightened in urgency when earlier in the day three police officers in

Baton Rouge, La., were shot to death. The purpose was to create a video that shows people of Sugar Land of all races, ethnicities and religions standing together to decry the racism and violence that has been tearing the country apart. City Councilwoman Amy Mitchell and Michele Fisher served as emcees of the event. They called the police officers in attendance to the stage amid great applause. “As you can see, our message is loud and clear: We stand behind our police,” Mitchell said. “Sugar Land stands together in support

Those are the men and women who altogether protect us, not only through times of extreme events, weather,

etc., but they’re always here for us.” He also thanked the volunteers who pulled the event together on such short notice. “This was organized by our citizens to recognize our community, not only the diversity of our community but also the support of our police, fire, EMS, emergency management and dispatch,” he said. The remarks were followed by comments and prayers from representatives of Islamic, Jewish, Christian and Hindu faiths. “God created us different

so that we may recognize and appreciate one another,” said Imam Tauqer Shah of Maryam Islamic Center. “He did not create us in different ways so that we would be divided as a race, religion and ethnicity. But instead it was to be a recognition and appreciation of his diversity. It was to build tolerance, understanding and acceptance of each other. “Today we gather here for a cause to reaffirm our position of peace and unity. We stand together to show that we have far more in common that unites us rather than divide us. We stand

united against evil, bigotry, hatred and extremism of all kind and any form. We stand side-by-side because we care, love, respect our neighbors.” He was followed by Rabbi Joshua Lobel of Congregation Beth El in Missouri City. “We stand here as one before The One. The one God of heaven and earth, the creator and sustainer of our world. … Open ourselves up to understand all sides of an issue.

Skeeters set to defend Atlantic League title By Joe Southern jsouthern @ fortbenstar.com

The Sugar Land Skeeters are doing something this season the baseball team has never done in its previous five years of existence. They are defending the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball championship. The Skeeters begin their title defense at Constellation Field on Thursday, April 20, against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The team will celebrate its championship season from April 20-26 with special promotions and events during the sevengame homestand versus the Bluefish. The Skeeters road schedule begins on Friday, April 28 when they travel to Lancaster and Southern Maryland (April 28-May 4). The Skeeters won the 2016 championship in spectacular fashion, making a late-season dash to clinch a playoff spot and then sweeping the York Revolution in the divisional series and the Long Island Ducks in the championship series. The championship came in just the fifth year of the franchise and was the third playoff appearance for the Skeeters. It was an improbable accomplishment for a team that struggled to keep a winning record all season and nearly collapsed at the end with a 4-14 skid that ended with a four-game series sweep and a sixgame run in the playoffs. “They stuck together and pulled it through the tough times,” owner Bob Zlotnik said during a postseason celebration last October. The Skeeters were 3535 and five games out of

They came on strong in the second half, building a three-game lead before hitting the skid and sliding toward the brink of playoff elimination. The Skeeters rebounded and went 10-0 at the end, eliminating the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs from playoff contention, sweeping the York Revolution for the Freedom Division title and downing the Liberty Division champion Long Island Ducks for the league crown. “The team did really well. We kind of had our ups and downs during the season,” Zlotnik said. Team President Jay

Miller earned his 11th championship ring as a baseball executive. “To win it my first year here is really great fun,” he said. “We have a great team, great ownership and great fans and that just made it fun.” Among his stated goals at the start of the season were leading the league in attendance and winning a championship. “We got one of the two,” he said. “Next year I’ll have the same two goals.” Going into the 2017 season, the 20th anniversary season for the Atlantic League and the sixth season for the Skeeters, the team

We stand united.” The final copy of the video will include a challenge from Zimmerman to other mayors across the country to create their own video projects to spread a message of unity and respect.

Sugar Land receives $500,000 donation for Cullinan Park development The Cullinan Park Conservancy’s recent contribution of $500,000 to the City of Sugar Land is a milestone in the future development of Cullinan Park – 754 acres of mostly inaccessible forest and wetlands north of Sugar Land Regional Airport. The donation was made possible, in part, by The George Foundation’s commitment of $1 million and the Wortham Foundation’s award of $250,000 for park improvements. Sugar Land annexed the park earlier this year after signing historic agreements with the conservancy, the City of Houston and the Houston Parks Board. Future development of the property has long been targeted by the community and is consistent with the conservancy’s efforts to preserve the vast natural resources of the park. “The Lucie H. and Joseph S. Cullinan Park has long been considered a natural oasis in our

region,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Joe Chesser. “We’re extremely excited for this once-in-alifetime opportunity to open up this rare amenity for the community. To put this in perspective, this parkland is about the size of Central Park in New York City and nearly doubles the size of Sugar Land’s park and green space. “While we intend to preserve its passive nature, we believe it will grow into an amenity that’s just as important. The need to do what was best for the park, not just for any one city, led to the formation of historic agreements to preserve and open up the park for greater enjoyment.” The city is now operating and maintaining the park, which includes enhanced security; trail cleanup; lawn maintenance; and new lighting systems, signage and entry gates. Future planned improvements include trails and boardwalks that allow greater access to existing

lakes and wetlands areas, as well as locations for canoe and kayak launches into Oyster Creek. Site amenities such as picnic pavilions, benches and interpretive signage have also been identified. Planning and design will begin this year with construction to follow. The land is currently owned by the City of Houston and Houston Parks Board and now located within Sugar Land’s city limits. The annexation by Sugar Land was the result of visionary leadership by members of the conservancy and elected leaders in Sugar Land and Houston. The lands of Cullinan Park were first settled in 1828 by Alexander Hodge, a member of Stephen F. Austin’s Old 300. For more than 150 years, the property was used for raising cattle, sugar cane and other crops. In 1989, Cullinan Park was acquired by the Houston Parks Board and City of Houston and opened in 1991 as a nature preserve with improvements funded by

the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The Cullinan Park Conservancy was formed as a non-profit corporation in 2010, as a project of the tax-exempt Houston Parks Board. The Conservancy seeks to enhance and protect the natural beauty of Cullinan Park. The conservancy is focused on a number of efforts that will help enhance the Park’s status as – in the words of its major donor Nina Cullinan – a “place of beauty and peacefulness in the city.” These efforts include mapping the park, surveying its vegetation and birdlife, planning for its trail and bridge renovations, arranging for park cleanups and organizing a photo con-

test about the park, its wildlife, landscapes and visitors. “It’s an exciting time for Sugar Land and the entire region,” said Chesser. “With commitments from all parties aimed at preserving the natural beauty, improving the accessibility, and continuing the development of the park, the impacts of this historic agreement will be felt for years to come. Sugar Land begins annexation of New Territory and Greatwood neighborhoods By Subrata Barot For the Fort Bend Star

Sugar Land is set to grow by more than 30 percent on Dec. 12 of this year. The annexations of the New Territory and Greatwood Municipal Utility Districts (MUD) will increase the current population of Sugar Land from 87,367 to 117,000 residents. At Sugar Land City Council’s Nov. 15 meeting last year, council members unanimously approved the annexations of both areas. The city’s 2017 fiscal year budget was also amended to begin the pre-annexation work to provide the areas

with city services starting Dec. 12. At present, both New Territory and Greatwood are part of the city’s extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) and receive their public safety services from the Fort Bend County. Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman said the annexations have been part of Sugar Land’s planning for the past 10 years. He added that city officials worked with elected representatives of both MUDs and homeowner’s associations to negotiate Strategic Partnership Agreements (SPAs) which outlined each party’s various responsibilities and timing for the future annexations. As part of the SPAs, a sur-

charge was put in place that residents of New Territory and Greatwood paid to fund the annexation costs. Current Sugar Land residents have not paid toward the eventual annexation. And annexation will not increase costs, taxes or impact city services for current or future city residents. Starting Dec.12, both communities will receive the same benefits as current Sugar Land residents including high-quality police, fire, EMS, parks and recreation, public works and other services. New Territory and Greatwood will be temporarily placed within City Council District Two and City Council District Four, respectively.

The newly annexed areas will be able to participate in the mayoral and at-large elections in May of 2018. “The new residents will get to experience firsthand the superior services provided by our staff and public safety personnel,” said District Four Councilmember Harish Jajoo. “They will also have ac-

cess to various city facilities and amenities. We are committed to having a seamless transition in December. Our staff has worked very hard in planning a smooth annexation.” All parties are still in the initial stages of the annexation. City officials started community outreach exercis-

es in January to explain how the annexation process will affect Sugar Land’s annexed community. Discussion topics will include explanations of city services, public safety discussions with both city and county officials and information on important contacts in the city.
