WELCOME TO SUGAR LAND AND FORT BEND COUNTY Howdy y’all, and welcome to Sugar Land and Fort Bend County! We’re so glad to have you here. If you’re new to our little corner of paradise then there is a lot you need to know, so settle down into a comfy chair with a tall glass of iced tea and get ready to explore this amazing corner of the world we call home. JOE SOUTHERN One of the first things you’ll learn about people here in Sugar Land and our neighbors in Missouri City, Stafford, Meadows Place, Richmond, Rosenberg, and everywhere else in Fort Bend County is we’re a little different. Actually, we’re a lot different. This is one of the biggest melting pots of race, religion and culture on the planet. That’s a good thing and something we’re mighty proud of. We are a healthy mix of blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, Muslims, Hindus, Christians, Jews and/or probably a little Jedi, Sith, Vulcan or Klingon thrown in just for good measure. Seriously though, it’s not uncommon to see a mosque down the street from a church or even near a temple. This is a place proud of its history, touching such events as the Texas Revolution to the Old West and on to outer space via our NASA neighbors in Houston. Fort Bend County is home to many astronauts, professional athletes, noteworthy politicians, artists, musicians, and descendents from Stephen F. Austin’s Old 300 colonists. This is the home of champions, including the Sugar

Land Skeeters baseball team, which won its first Atlantic League championship in 2016. Olympic champions Tara Lipinski, Simone Manuel, and Steven Lopez have called Sugar Land home. Sugar Land is a world-class city and a place where you can enjoy world-class entertainment in our new Smart Financial Centre, enjoy professional baseball at Constellation Field, tour numerous museums or spend some leisure time in one of our many parks. The city recently annexed Cullinan Park and is making huge improvements. New parks and trails are under development, including a new Crown Festival Park and the Brazos River Park, not far from the Smart Financial Centre and the city’s outdoor plaza there. When it comes to museums, we’ve got the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land and the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Museum, and the new Sugar Land Heritage Museum. This is in addition to the Fort Bend County Museum and George Ranch Historical Park in Richmond, the Rosenberg Railroad Museum, and several other museums and galleries. Of course, all of this is tip-of-the-iceberg stuff when it comes to really exploring and appreciating everything Sugar Land and Fort Bend County have to offer. That’s why we invite you to flip through the pages of this guide to help you navigate all that we get to enjoy on a daily basis. To help you stay on top of the news and events happening locally, please be sure to read the Fort Bend Star each week. It’s free to you, part of our way of saying welcome, we’re glad you’re here! Sincerely, Joe Southern Editor, Fort Bend Star

Old school baseball purists are going to have a lot to look forward to this season when the Sugar Land Skeeters take to the field for their seventh season at Constellation Field. After six years under the management of Gary Gaetti, the Skeeters have called on Pete Incaviglia to helm the baseball club as it aims to reclaim the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball championship trophy that it won for the first time in 2016. “I am going to put together a team that you and the community and the organization will be proud of and we will play the game the right way. I’m a little bit old school,” Incaviglia said. Incaviglia, 53, was a leftfielder who played 12 years in the major leagues with six different teams – including two stints with the Houston Astros – without playing in the minors. He was an Oklahoma State University standout who was the eighth overall pick in the 1985 amateur draft by the Montreal Expos. Incaviglia refused to play in the Expos minor league system, so he was traded to the Rangers. As a result of the trade, Major League Baseball made a rule prohibiting a team from trading a drafted player until he has been under contract to the club for at one year. In 2015 the rule was changed to allow teams to trade drafted players after the World Series concluded. “The Skeeters are one of the best organizations in independent baseball. I’m very honored and privileged to be their second manager,” Incaviglia said. Team President Jay Miller has known Incaviglia for a long time and was thrilled to bring his old friend to Sugar Land. They met when Miller was an executive for the Texas Rangers. “I have known Pete since 1985 when he was a first-round pick of the Texas Rangers,” he said. “I am very excited to work with Pete and know he will do an outstanding job as the manager of the Sugar Land Skeeters. We are lucky to have Pete with us. Great days are ahead for the Skeeters.” Incaviglia said his relationship with Miller and his respect for team owners Bob and Marcie Zlotnik made it an easy decision to come to Sugar Land. “The Zlotnik family is a baseball family,” he said. “They put their trust in me and I’m going to do my best to not let them down.” The leftfielder bring a very impressive baseball pedigree to town. He played for the Rangers from 1986-1990. He spent 1991 with the Detroit Tigers, 1992 with the Astros, 1993-94 with the Philadelphia Phillies and then spent a season in Japan with the Chiba Lotte Marines. He came back to the Phillies in 1996 but was traded to the Baltimore Orioles where he played into the

1997 season. He concluded the year with the New York Yankees. He split his last season in 1998 between the Tigers and Astros. “I’ve played a long time for some old school managers, Sparky Anderson comes to mind, Jim Fregosi, Joe Torre … I think a little bit of everybody I’ve played for has kind of rubbed off on me,” he said. “Art Howe is not only kind of a mentor of mine and he’s a local guy, but he’s one of the nicest human beings I’ve ever met. He gave me one of the best compliments of my career. He looked at me towards the end of my career and said that you might make a pretty good coach or manager someday.” Much like the legendary Babe Ruth, Inclaviglia was known for his power but also his tendency to strike out. He led the league in strikeouts in 1986 and 1988 and had 1,277 career strikeouts. He still owns single-season NCAA records with 48 home runs and 143 runsbatted-in. Incaviglia began his coaching career at a hitting coach for the Tigers’ AA affiliate Erie Seawolves. In 2007 he was named the inaugural manager for the Grand Prairie AirHogs in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball. He left for a year to be the manager of the Laredo Lemurs and then returned to the AirHogs as the hitting coach. Although Incaviglia never played in the minors, ironically, he has spent all of his time in the minors since retiring as a player. During his introduction to Sugar Land, the Skeeters front office staff expressed excitement at having Incaviglia on board. “His background includes being one of the best players in college baseball history,” said Ira Liebman, “The Voice of the Skeeters.” “In the minors, he’s an accomplished minor league coach and manager.” While introducing Incaviglia, team co-owner Kevin Zlotnik also introduced former major leaguer Jackie Moore, whom the Skeeters are wooing to be a part-time bench coach. The 78-year-old Moore graduated from Bellaire High School in Houston and played for the Detroit Tigers for one season in 1965. He was a coach for the Texas Rangers during five stints totaling 12 years. He spent 32 years as a coach for eight different major league teams and managed the Oakland Athletics from 1984-86. Moore was the inaugural skipper for the Round Rock Express in 2000, which is where he became friends with Miller. Zlotnik said when former manager Gary Gaetti stepped down after six years, that opened a floodgate of interest in the position. “The interest in the position cemented our belief that we’re the gold standard for the Atlantic League and all of independent baseball. We had dozens of candidates reach out from affiliated

SUGAR LAND HERITAGE MUSEUM AND VISITORS CENTER OPENS By Joe Southern JSOUTHERN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

The future of Sugar Land’s history is now neatly nestled in its past. In February, the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation and the City of Sugar Land opened the museum and visitors center on the second floor of the old container warehouse that was once part of Imperial Sugar’s refinery operation. The Sugar Land Heritage Museum is centrally located within the Imperial Market, an entertainment-centric destination center that is repurposing the old sugar refinery to include upscale retail and restaurant space, class A office space, a luxury residential complex and a high-end boutique hotel. The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation itself was created to preserve the artifacts and history of the refinery when it closed in 2003. The foundation was established in 2008 and has been working for 10 years to reach this point. “This plan has been in the works for a long time,” said SLHF Administrator Kim Icenhower. “We always wanted to be at the site of the sugar factory.” Sugar, as the city’s name implies, has been at the heart of the community that got its start in 1828 as the Oakland Plantation. Surviving the Texas Revolution and the Civil War, the plantation that became Sugar Land became a company town in 1907 with the establishment of the Imperial Sugar Company. The last sugarcane crop in Fort Bend County was harvested in 1928. Imperial Sugar closed its mill and focused its efforts on refining imported sugar. The company ran the town until 1959 when it officially incorporated into a city. Imperial Sugar ceased operation of the refinery in 2003, ending a major chapter in the city’s history. Preserving that history fell to the foundation, a nonprofit organization established in 2008. Upon entering the museum and visitors center on the second floor – one floor up from the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center – guests are first greeted by a giant, neon Sugar Land sign. The front desk and a small shopping area behind it serve as the visitors center. Further in is the first installment of the museum. A large 3-D timeline of the city’s history comes complete with a computer kiosk that provides supplemental information about the people, places, and things that made the

city what it is today. The majority of the space is currently decorated with paintings and signs depicting exhibits that will soon be built. Behind the main area is a classroom area filled with historic photos of the community. Behind that room are the offices and storage area of the foundation. That’s where the majority of the foundation’s artifacts reside until they can be adequately cataloged and prepared for display. “We’re still in the process of unpacking,” Icenhower said. Just getting to the stage of having a museum has taken a lot of cooperation and coordination from several different entities. According to the SLHF’s website, “The City of Sugar Land, the Imperial Sugar Company, and Cherokee Investments developed a partnership approach to the creation of a community-based heritage museum which would collect, preserve, and exhibit the collection on the refinery site. … The City of Sugar Land has provided the seed funding for the formation of the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation along with generous support from Kempner Fund, Cherokee Investments, Johnson Development, Imperial Sugar, the Fort Bend Museum Association, and community representatives.” Johnson Development, which owns the refinery site and is redeveloping it as Imperial Market, made the space available to the city and foundation. Sugar Land’s investment in the museum is an important part of an effort to establish a cultural arts district in Sugar Land, one that builds on successful efforts such as the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land, the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land, the expansion of public art and more. “We have received generous support from many in the community, including a recent donation of $150,000 from Larry Johnson, of Johnson Development,” said SLHF Board of Directors President Martin Nicholas. According to Icenhower, museum exhibits will be developed as funding becomes available. In the meantime, the SLHF will continue to raise funds by offering its historic walking tours of old town Sugar Land on the second Saturday of each month. The popular tours are $10 for adults and begin at 10 a.m. at the museum. For more information about the museum, the foundation, and the history of Sugar Land, visit slheritage.org or call 281-2752030.

KRB DENTISTRY GIVES COMMUNITY MUCH TO SMILE ABOUT

By Joe Southern JSOUTHERN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

For Dr. Kauser Bari, dentistry is more than just healthy teeth and beautiful smiles. Dentistry is a way to help people and improve the quality of life in her community and the world. She and her staff at KBR Dentistry are on a mission to make life better for the people in their community and working on teeth is just a means to that end. “I feel like I want to do more. I don’t want to be just a dentist. I want to see what I can do with my talent, with whatever potential God gave us … beyond just taking care of teeth,” she said. “I want to take care of the people, take care of the community, just be a part of it so they don’t feel like they’re being an outsider when they’re coming in. And also for us it’s a big thing to be part of the community. Each and every person on our staff just has that enthusiasm, that

passion to serve. And I feel like to serve God is to serve the people. That’s why we talk about dentistry with integrity because in serving God we have to make sure we serve the people.” Bari knows full well the stigma associated with dentistry and works hard to make the experience of coming to KRB Dentistry in Rosenberg pleasurable rather than dreadful. “We offer them nitrous oxide to help them relax. We offer them soothing music. In each room we have a TV to distract them and music of their choice; whatever they like to make them feel comfortable. To make them feel like they’re getting a spa treatment, hopefully, as much as we can because going into somebody’s mouth is not easy,” she said. KRB Dentistry offers a wide range of services for people of all ages. Bari insists each person receive the highest quality of care for the lowest possible price. “She used to say, ‘what’s the use of practicing dentistry if the prices are so high that the people can’t afford it?’” said Dr. Zarina Shaikh, who is one of the seven dentists at KRB

Dentistry. “That was another thing that drew me in. I could tell she truly wants what’s best for her patients. That’s the type of atmosphere we have here, it’s not money-driven, it’s quality-driven.” Bari’s husband, Riffat Bari, handles the business side of the business. “I never want to look at the numbers. I don’t think to this day I’ve looked at how much anything has made because I feel like if you’re paying attention to the money you can’t pay attention to what the patient really needs, so basically that’s how I look at it,” Bari said. “It’s like a family business and we’re all like family, even my staff, they’re like my kids.” One day soon she hopes her daughter, Sabah Bari, will join her in the practice. “Now my daughter is in dental school and hopefully she will be joining me. I look forward to that,” she said. Bari’s mission to help others extends well beyond the walls of her office.

St. Lawrence Church of Sugar Land, and we’ve served the community there, at the border of Mexico and Laredo, and we’ve taken care of over 2,000 people there, providing them dental care, medical, eye exams. But for us, basically, people who have not been to the dentist for like 30 years they came to us and got their work done and got them out of pain, get their cleanings done, get their extractions, we’ve done that,” she said. Bari is also involved in the schools. “I’m also on the Lamar CTE board. We help the students with scholarships and we try to provide them with some kind of space; the students come over here to get maybe a mentorship and try to see what it feels like to be in the dental world, if that would interest them,” she said. “So, CTE is continued technical education for the students to see what is outside for them, outside of school … try to shadow

someone like myself as a dentist, or the dental assistant or the front desk to see what position they would like to work with in the future. So this is how we work with the community.” As important as it is for KBR Dentistry to be involved in the community, they want the community to feel welcome and comfortable at the office. “But here, coming back to the office, we’ve expanded because the people felt like this was just a kids’ place, so we’ve separated that,” Bari said. “We have the adult section – try to make it more like a spa – and we have the kids section, to make it more like fun with an under the water theme. We make you feel like you’re in an aquarium or beaches or Disney World with Nemo, Moana, Jake and mermaid, and just make it a fun activity. And the office, we try to keep the atmosphere light and lively.”

Shaikh got to know Bari through common volunteer work. “I actually volunteer at a community clinic where Dr. Bari volunteers as well. I got to see how she worked and I really loved her work ethic and how she was with patients and I knew that I wanted to be in that type of environment as well because we had the same type of ideals. So I started working here and I’ve been here for about three years,” she said. Dr. Adel El-Deeb joined KRB Dentistry in the fall of 2017 and, like Shaikh, was attracted by Bari’s philanthropy and approach to dentistry. Originally from Cairo, Egypt, El-Deeb grew up in Stillwater, Okla. He had been doing cancer research at MD Anderson in Houston when a couple of oral surgeons swayed him toward dentistry. He went to dental school in Washington, D.C., and did a

“We also go out into the community. We do community service. We go to the schools, we teach them oral hygiene; we want to talk about preventive care, so when they come here all they need is a check-up and a polish,” she said. “So we teach them how to take care of their teeth so we can avoid cavities.” Bari is active in civic organizations such as the Rotary Club and Like-Minded Community. “We also go out to Like-Minded Community businesses to help with the community wherever there’s a need, whether it’s food, whether it’s clothing, anyone that needs anything, we go and try to help them out,” she said. “Once a month we have the food bank and us in partnership serving the community food that they need for the month. “We also go to mission trips. I’ve been to Laredo and we meet with the church,

12 KBR DENTISTRY CONTINUED residency in New York before a common friend suggested he’d be a good match at KBR Dentistry. “I love it. It’s phenomenal. The staff is wonderful. The doctors are amazing. The patients and the demographic in this area is awesome,” he said. “I get to help everyone. One of the things that attracts me the most about this office is that there’s a wide range of ages for my patients. It ranges from three months to 100 and I love it.” This year marks 10 years for KBR Dentistry. For Bari, it has been a long journey to get to this point. “I’m from India. I came when I was 8 years old. I was raised in Baltimore, Maryland, and I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Maryland,” she said. “There I was taking Spanish and they said, ‘Why are you taking Spanish?’ and I said, ‘Maybe someday I’ll move to Texas and I’ll need to know Spanish.’ So now I speak Spanish fluently and that helps me communicate with my patients and that’s very important to me. When I got married and moved here in 1991 I went to dental school here at UT (University of Texas) … Now I’m a faculty member at UT as well, I’m an associate professor and I love mentoring.”

Before opening her own practice, Bari worked for South Texas Dental and other places for about 15-20 years. “At South Texas Dental, I was the lead dentist there at several locations, and then I became partners with Dr. (Iraj) Jabbary at ABC Dental and I had two offices but I worked at six locations. I helped them start about six offices at ABC Dental,” she said. Bari said opening an office in Rosenberg was ideal for her. “I really felt when I came to Rosenberg that it was a blessed place. This is where I felt I could be a part of the community, actually doing what my calling was – to help with the people, to help the community grow, to be a part of not just the patient but the whole family and make them feel at home with us,” she said. “So when they walk in I want them to feel like they’re part of a family. Most people, when they come into the dentist office, they’re really scared. So, when they come in I want them to feel the warmth, give them a hug, give them love, make them feel comfortable, and give them the treatment that I would want to give to my family.”

Shhhh. The Missouri City Branch Library is closed for now but reopening as a technological wonder this summer. The branch at 1530 Texas Parkway closed for renovations last July and will reopen this summer doubling its space with 9,600 more square feet, and a three-story addition to the existing library. The additional space will be used for a computer lab, study rooms, and meeting spaces. The current 18,462-square-foot library was built in 1992 when computers weren’t so prevalent. “The area served by the Missouri City Branch Library has grown and changed considerably. No one could have imagined how much the digital age would change all of our lives. Use of electronic resources – such as computers, the Internet, WiFi, and circulation of digital ebooks and audiobooks – have all shown increases at the Missouri City Branch Library, so the addition of a computer lab will definitely help us meet those needs of our library patrons,” said County Librarian Clara Russell. The renovation will also include an expansion of the library’s meeting room space, which is used for library programs and community gatherings. “Our adult and teen programs have really seen an increase in attendance, so the additional space being added to that room will be very helpful for all of our programs,” Russell said. Programs that attracts visitors to the library include their pajama night story times at 7 p.m. on Mondays giving families an evening option for activities presented during the day. On Tuesdays, children can hear stories, watch movies and participate in age-appropriate

crafts. And adults will have access to computer classes, classes for job hunters and more. They had computers in the old library, but now they will have a dedicated computer lab with 53 available computers. Members will also be able to check out Nooks for seven days and Launchpads for a week. The library’s technology system will be upgraded to allow RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) capability, which will speed up the check-out/check-in of library materials. New RFID self-check stations will be installed in the adult and youth areas. The Missouri City Branch Library is one of the 11 libraries in the Fort Bend Library system. While it is closed, residents can visit the nearby Sienna Branch Library, located at 8411 Sienna Springs Blvd. in Missouri City. Other libraries nearby include the Mamie George Branch Library, 320 Dulles Ave. in Stafford, the First Colony Branch Library, 2121 Austin Parkway in Sugar Land, and the Sugar Land Branch Library 550 Eldridge. “The library’s resources that can be accessed through our website – such as the databases, Homework Help, Ask-a-Librarian chat, Cloud Library and OverDrive eBooks, Hoopla movies and music, and other online services – will still be available from any computer outside the library that has an Internet connection,” Russell said. The George Memorial Library in Richmond, the main library in the system, has the largest collection of materials – about 700,000 – in the Fort Bend County Libraries system. It has a particular focus on large-print books, parenting, Spanish-language books, teen materials, literacy materials, and text books from LCISD and FBISD. The library also houses the Genealogy and Local History Department on the second floor of the building; the department’s resources focus on the southeastern United States and includes materials relating to the history of the South, federal censuses, genealogy, and the Civil War. The Joe Grillo Science Center is located in the Children’s Department on the first floor. WiFi Access George Memorial Library provides free WiFi access to the public throughout the building.

Contact the Adult Reference Department at George Memorial for more information and connection instructions to use your personal laptop at the library. Computer Lab George Memorial Library houses a new computer lab with 18 computers and an instructor’s computer, as well as a large screen to show computer/Internet screens, video tapes and satellite downlinks. When the lab is not being used for training purposes, it is open to the public. Patrons may reserve some of the computers at this branch. This facility is scheduled for renovation providing more space as the administrative offices will be moved to a new building. BAPS SHRI SWAMINARAYAN MANDIR SHINES IN STAFFORD By Theresa D. McClellan FOR THE FORT BEND STAR

In the middle of Southwest Houston, beyond the gridlock of Highway 90A, and adjacent to a residential neighborhood of apartments, stands a stunning massive marble white structure offering peace to all who enter. This house of worship called a Mandir – the first Hindu temple of its kind built in North America – is a study in ancient architecture, artistry, and beauty. Located in Stafford at the intersection of E Street and Brand Road, 1150 Brand Road, the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir was built according to ancient architectural scriptures of India dating back 5,000 years. It is a shimmering example of the diversity of faith and culture Fort Bend has to offer. Entering the red gates surrounding the 22-acre property and one is transported to another place and time. It doesn’t feel like Texas anymore, except for the hospitality. There is ample parking, including multiple handicapped spots, but the elevator is only used by the monks living on site. Visitors willing to climb the multiple sets of marble stairs, which have hand railings, can expect a feast for the eyes with intricately carved deities, animals, flowers, domes, pillars and nooks everywhere. The 33,000 pieces of Italian marble and Turkish limestone

making up the temple were shipped to India where artisans sculpted them, then shipped to Stafford where hundreds of local volunteers and artists spent more than 1.5 million hours over a 16-month period piecing them together in interlocking tongue and groove fashion without the use of iron or steel. The Mandir, which is free and open daily to the public, is also a way to share with the community the Hindu rituals, traditions, and beliefs of the Swaminarayan Sanstha, a worldwide Hindu socio-spiritual organization dedicated to spiritual growth, community service, peace, and harmony, said one of the guides on the grounds to greet visitors and give tours. Because it is a house of worship, and visitors are entering sacred spaces, there are modes of conduct such as removing shoes, wearing modest clothing so no bare legs and arms, no touching the carvings and no photography inside. Guidelines are prominently listed on the property and guides eagerly invite people inside and explain what they are viewing. The Hindu faith is an icon or idol based religion with the belief in multiple gods as well as an understanding of one Supreme Being. The multiple gods are divine creations of the one God allowing different names and forms of God to be worshipped in the same facility, explained a guide. Worship consists of a pattern of devotional rituals, ceremonies, and practices observed throughout the day, every day.

Throughout there are carvings of deities, sages and exemplary devotees who are sources of reverence and spiritual inspiration because they encourage cultivation of universal values such as honesty, empathy, non-violence, and devotion to God. The exterior surrounding wall of the Mandir has carvings depicting stories of devotion. There area also various depictions of classical dance and music and intricate lacy marble carvings that seem to float inside the overhead domes. The detail of the craftsmanship is breathtaking. Depending on when one goes, visitors can witness and participate in prayers, where they will see some devotees prone on the floor or seated cross-legged. There are separate entrances for men and women, a special room where shoes are removed and left behind, and outside a massive calming pool with nearby benches allow one to bask in silence. In separate buildings on the campus, there is a prayer room and a cafe and gift shop. When their sixth spiritual successor and current guru Mahant Swami Majaraj made his first visit to North America and Stafford last summer, more than 3,000 devotees came to the Mandir to see him, according to news reports. For more information on tours and visiting hours, visit www.baps. org/Global-Network/North-America/Houston.aspx.

SUGAR LAND TOWN SQUARE MIXES UPTOWN WITH URBAN FOR GROWING COMMUNITY By Donna Hill FOR THE FORT BEND STAR

Sugar Land Town Square, in the heart of the City of Sugar Land, has shopping, community events, and great restaurants. Anchored by Sugar Land City Hall, the Square is growing with the community, while satisfying the varied tastes and styles of the population. The development of Sugar Land Town Square began in 2003 when Planned Community Developers partnered with the City of Sugar Land to create a new, unique downtown destination where Sugar Land residents could live, work, shop and relax. “Sugar Land Town Square is the heart of the community and a place where you can shop, dine, play and stay,” said Taylor Scott, event program manager for Sugar Land Town Square. “We also

host over 270 events per year in the plaza including live music, movie nights, dance lessons, car shows, singing competitions, magic shows, food and fashion events and so much more.” One of the fastest growing cities in Texas, Sugar Land’s population has grown from nearly 25,000 in 1990 to about 85,000 today. It is conveniently located just a few miles southwest of Houston. When it comes to food, there’s no end to the variety of restaurants. Finicky eaters – never fear. Mention food, and chefs and management agree they have “the largest collection of dining options in Sugar Land with enough options to satisfy any foodie or picky palette.” Shoppers and foodies alike can prepare themselves for fresh retail experiences as new stores come to Sugar Land Town Square includ-

ing Bacon Brothers Public House, Venetian Nail Spa, The Sugar Refinery Grub and Grogs, Boardroom Salon for Men and Vino & Vinyl will be opening in the next few months. “We are continuously working to elevate the tenant mix with diverse and unique shopping and dining options,” said Jennifer Fogle, director of retail leasing. An evening of dining and entertainment is a new addition this year with the added shuttle service to and from the Smart Financial Centre during its scheduled concert events. Visitors can now shop and dine at Sugar Land Town Square, followed by shuttle service to and from Smart Financial Centre. Since 1951 Chuck Charlton of Charlton Auto Body in Stafford understands customers and treats them like family. The foundation for the success of Charlton Auto Body has always been focused on the customer, and it’s been that way for three generations. “My grandfather, E.C. Charlton, moved to Stafford in 1950, and opened up the business in 1951, and later named the company Charlton’s Garage and Auto Sales. In 1970 my dad, Johnny Mack, took over the company. When he retired in 1982, I took over,” Charlton said. Chuck kept the same phone number and business name, and built “Charlton Auto Body into what it is today.” It’s been 24 years in a very active auto business focusing on collision and insurance work. “If you wreck your car, that’s the kinda work we do – fix any damage. We’ve repaired them clear up to the value of the cars, so we’ve seen it all. And we work on all vehicles,” he said. As a successful small businessman in Stafford, Charlton is firmly established in the industry, yet has no plans for expanding the business. “I like to keep the business small so I can keep an eye on all aspects of the company,” he said. Charlton is candid about car tips after a collision.

Then

“Number one, insurance companies try and get you to go to shops that work for them. I tell everybody you don’t have to work with shops that work with insurance companies. Most are so big, and they don’t have the hands-on experience we have here at Charlton’s. I tell people you have the right to choose the body shop of your choice. We have a great customer data base and a lot of customers, and most of our work is word of mouth,” he said. He stays away from cars during the weekend, but talks to customers over the phone if they need him. After discussing any damage issues, Charlton said, “I really don’t recommend customers take the car to the storage lot. Tow it to the house and I’ll get it out the next morning.” Not a tinkerer of cars in his spare time, Charlton does like his trips to Mexico. It’s one of his favorite fast vacation getaways. “We can get there in two hours,” he said. He’s happy to note that customer satisfaction is the key to success of the family business of Charlton’s Auto Body. “Our customers are not just a name and a number here, you know. We become friends with them, too,” he said. “Bring your car to Charlton’s. Where you’re treated as family and not just another customer,” he said.

AREA GEARS UP FOR ANNUAL RE ENACTMENTS OF TEXAS REVOLUTION By Joe Southern JSOUTHERN@FORTBENDSTAR.COM

Texans are proud of a great many things but one of them for certain is our unique history. Any Texan worth his or her salt will be quick to tell you that Texas is the only state in the union that was once its own nation. The struggle to become a nation took place in 1835-1836 during a war with Mexico often referred to as the Texas Revolution. Each spring as the anniversary of the war rolls around, scores of re-enactors don period clothing, equipment and weaponry and charge out onto the hallowed battlefields to re-live those glory days and to remind new generations the importance of remembering the Alamo. On the trail of Texas Independence As General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna and the Mexican Army pursued Texian rebels from San Antonio to what is now Houston in 1836, so can modern-day history buffs and travelers follow in the footsteps of these historic warriors as annual battle re-enactments and hiving history programs spring to life across the land.

The following is a list of events taking place this year to commemorate the 182nd anniversary of the Texas Revolution: Feb. 23 – March 6 The Alamo
 300 Alamo Plaza,
San Antonio The state’s most hallowed and revered historic landmark is quietly hosting a series of events to commemorate the siege and battle between the Mexican Army and the Alamo defenders. The General Land Office is not allowing re-enactment and living history groups to fire guns or cannons as they have in the past, so don’t go expecting much bang for your buck. Do go for a solemn pilgrimage to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. There will be daily activities at the Alamo to commemorate the 13-day siege, culminating with the annual Dawn At The Alamo on Tuesday, March 6, at 6 a.m. Re-enactors representing both armies pay homage in recognition of great sacrifices made by both sides at the Alamo. March 3-5 Texas Independence Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site 12300 Park Road 12 Washington, TX On March 2, 1836, 59 delegates bravely met here to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. The event will be commemorated with numerous activities, including battle demonstrations by the Texas Army, plays, music, food, historic demonstrations and more.

March 24-25 Goliad Massacre Presidio La Bahia 217 U.S. 183, Goliad

`The Goliad Massacre occurred on March 27, 1836, during the Texas Revolution when nearly 500 prisoners of war from the army of the Republic of Texas were killed by the Mexican Army near the town of Goliad. This is traditionally the biggest and best of the Texas Revolution re-enactments. Visit Texian and Mexican camps and witness battle re-enactments, including the very poignant candlelight tour Saturday night and the somber death march and execution Sunday morning.
April 7 The Runaway Scrape George Ranch Historical Park 10215 FM 762,
Richmond In the spring of 1836, thousands of Texians fled from their homes as Santa Anna’s army began marching toward San Jacinto. Visit the 1830s Jones Stock Farm and see the Texians in action as they struggle to retreat during the re-creation of the Runaway Scrape and Engagement at Thompson’s Ferry.
April 21 San Jacinto Day San Jacinto Monument 1 Monument Circle, La Porte San Jacinto Day Battle Reenactment and Festival One of the largest battle re-enactments in the state is the centerpiece of the admission-free annual San Jacinto Day Festival, held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the grounds surrounding the San Jacinto Monument. The re-enactment recreates the events leading up to Texas winning its independence from Mexico 181 years ago at the decisive Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 1836. There will be lots of food, vendors, music and more.
