Taurus Mechanical brings integrity to the air conditioning business

T

alking with John Theriot, owner/operator of Taurus Mechanical, about his heating and air conditioning business reminded me of my father. Red Southern has spent more than 50 years in the business, the last 15 to 20 on his own. Theriot has been in business over 30 years, the last 20 or so as a selfemployed business owner. The stories he told me about hours spent contorted in people’s attics and time spent getting to know the customer and finding out what he or she needs sounded very familiar to me. The emphasis on quality and doing a job right the first time is a trait common to both men. Between the familiarity of his story and Theriot’s easygoing manner, I knew right away that I liked him and could trust him. There are a lot of people in the business who would rather deal with machines than people. Theriot isn’t one of them. His business is people and he is acutely aware of it. One of the things I like about Theriot is that he is not afraid of hard work. Throughout his career he has climbed

the ladder to upper management positions. He has also not forgotten where he comes from. He understands the value of mentorship and passing on his knowledge to the next generation. Several of his former technicians now run their own heating and air conditioning businesses. When things get hot in Houston, he often finds he gets so many calls that he has to triage them. His priority is typically the elderly and young mothers with newborns. He looks out for those who need his help the most. That speaks volumes about his character. He told me stories of how he helped people lacking in means to get where they needed to be in the comfort of their own home. He spoke of big industrial jobs that he was proud of. They’re the same kinds of stories my dad tells. By the way, anyone who can remind me of my dad is OK in my book! I can only hope that the genuine warmth of this air conditioning guy comes out in this month’s cover story. Please read it inside this edition and decide for yourself if he’s the kind of guy you’d want working on your air conditioning unit. I think you’ll agree that he is. Joe Southern

UNCLE HONEY’S serves up treats as sweet as its name By Theresa D. McClellan For the Fort Bend Business Journal It’s a taste that brings back memories. Willie Richard was flattered when a customer told him she gave the mildly sweet treat to her father who took one bite of Richard’s homemade teacake and was moved to tears. “It reminded him of his childhood and his mama. That was all right, pretty awesome,” said Richard, the owner of Uncle Honey’s Home Style Desserts, located at 1250 Texas Parkway in Stafford. Others have told him their grandmother makes the best teacakes. “I say that’s alright, we’ll take second to grandma,” he said. Richard, who has such a passion for baking that he quit his nearly six-figure job in the energy industry to pursue his long-time love of being an entrepreneur, and his wife Renae Richard, who left her

position in general contracting to join the business, own the bakery. The Missouri City couple recently attended a Missouri City Super Heroes function to learn how to expand their three-year-old business by engaging with the city. They also connected with senior organizers present and want to pursue the idea of hosting tea parties at senior complexes for senior citizens. There are many things that make the company stand out, including their love of hiring senior citizens. “I call them our senior saints,” said Renae Richard. Baker Elmena Brewer, 72, is one of those saints who came marching in through the door with a feisty personality and a love for creating sweet treats. She enjoys making confection creations for children and was recently tweaking her chocolate skeleton cake in the back of the bakery. She got the job a couple years ago after a friend asked the owner if he

would be baking for Thanksgiving and he responded he didn’t have enough help. “She said, you will now, and called me and said oh you’ve got to meet him. I said, ‘who in the world is Uncle Honey,’ recalled Brewer. He got the name of the store from the younger nieces and nephews who were surprised to learn his name was Richard since his wife always called him honey. “They heard me talking using his first name, they asked who was Richard and I said that’s my husband,” recalled his wife. They ran from the house as if they had a prized secret anxious to share with the other children. “Oooh, Uncle Honey’s real name is Richard.” The moniker stuck and was deemed perfect for the business. Brewer said she loves the family atmosphere of the fiveperson shop.

(Photo by Theresa D. McClellan) “I also love being here because this mind is constantly going and I can be creative here,” said Brewer, whose nickname is Miss Cookie. Richard said his background was the process where you push a button and if the machine runs fine it’s a great day. “Miss Cookie is responsible for those pumpkin cakes and brownie cakes. She is a wealth of knowledge and for her, it’s hands on,” he said. They have expanded beyond southern teacakes to include ooey-gooey cakes, blackout cakes, Russian cakes, blackberry cobbler, and Richard’s favorite, banana pudding cake, which he calls two treats in one. “The ooey-gooey is a concoction that came out of our culture,” said Brewer, a New Orleans native.

And while teacakes are a European tradition, southern teacakes, said Richard, came from the minimum rations of flour, butter, and sugar that slaves used to create a treat for their family. “It’s so much more than a cookie,” said Richard. Another senior employee, 70-year-old Joyce Gregg, said she was looking for a part-time job after retirement. She helps her daughter with her school-aged grandchildren and after retirement, she was looking for something with flexible hours so she could still be with the grandchildren. So she works from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. packaging products, waiting on customers, and filling in wherever she is needed. “I love the atmosphere here. I worked 41 and a half years at a job and never had

such closeness. They are warm, gentle people and a lot of places don’t look to the elders and for them to be the age they are and to hire my age. A lot just shun them away and they embrace. That’s what I like,” said Gregg. Gregg was familiar with the teacakes as her mother made them. She saw a display at the Pyburn’s Grocery store on Fondren for teacakes and was not impressed with the taste. “I was looking for my mom’s,” she said. She returned and saw another display from Uncle Honey’s teacakes and tried them. She opened them in the car. “These are so good these are madea’s,” said Gregg, who turned the car around to get more. Richard’s younger brother Jarvis Richard makes deliveries to all the stores. Now the teacakes are in 10 stores and Richard said he entered an HEB contest. They were impressed with his story but wanted him to fill an 18-wheeler with the product and ship it in a day. He said they aren’t at that level yet but he hopes to someday have shops strategically around the area. “All my life I wanted to be an entrepreneur,” said Richard, who started working odd jobs when he was 13 giving his mother money to help raise his siblings. Richard, now 56, worked 21 years in the baking industry for Mrs. Bairds Bakery until they were bought out and he lost his job. “When I got terminated at age 45, being a manager I had no college degree and I said what in the world am I gonna do,” he said. He tried selling insurance and was frustrated and his wife said, “honey, you don’t have to do that.” Then he worked UNCLE HONEY’S CONTINUES...page 18

ost anybody can install an air conditioning unit but not everyone who does will make the effort to make sure the job is done correctly and to the complete satisfaction of the customer. It’s that integrity and commitment to quality and customer service that has kept Taurus Mechanical in business in Sugar Land for more than 30 years. John Theriot founded the company in 1986 after the company he was working for abruptly shut its doors. “I got my Houston municipal license and completed most of the jobs that were already outstanding for the company and then started my own company under a DBA

(doing business as) of Taurus Construction, at the time,” he said. Finishing jobs for a business that had gone under reflects the integrity by which Theriot has conducted his business and why customers continue to use his services and refer him to others. “I still have customers that were with me back in 1986,” he said. Theriot knows that his business is about people, not the mechanics. “All they have to do is give me a chance to show them what I can do,” he said. “I am competitive with everybody else in this area, that’s how I’ve grown and have the clientele I do and keep.” “He does always want to be sure his customers are happy,” said Sheryl, his wife of 30 years. “He’s always relaying back to me that this job went really well; they really liked this and that. He’s very conscientious

of how they see his company.” “I take pride in what we do,” Theriot said, adding that, “I am a member of the Better Business Bureau with an A-plus rating.” “When I walk into a person’s home it’s different than being just a client to me. I’m going to do the job just like I’d do it in my own home,” he said. When the sweltering summer heat hits Houston, calls for service usually means there is more at stake than just someone’s comfort. “I try to get to as many people as I can that call in that day, or at the most the next day. We do take priorities for the senior citizens because they’re the ones that come first, or a young mother that just had a baby and it’s 100 degrees outside, we do go there,” he said. Senior citizens comprise a high percentage of his business.

“I do 70 percent residential and out of that residential I’d say a good percentage of that would be elderly,” he said. “I feel there’s a need to take care of them in the right way and fashion. As far as cost relation, I try to beat out quite a few of the competitors around here on pricing, but I am a ‘one trucker’ and have been for years. I also work out of the home because I don’t think I need a storefront. I never have because I have to go to the customers’ house to fix their A/C’s.” When Theriot moved from his home in Port Arthur to Houston in 1983, he began working as a helper in the field for Airflow Engineering. By the time the company went out of business he had worked himself up to the position of operations manager. Now out of a job, he and a partner began

working for themselves doing a variety of construction jobs. “When I first started the company I was with Terry King. He was a partner of mine. Both of us, our birthdays are in May and we kind of came to the thing of Taurus, the zodiac sign,” he said. “We chose that name and when he left and went to work with his dad … I just kept it going and ended up changing the name to Taurus Mechanical, because I wanted to stay with A/C because I knew more about it. I have more depth in it than any other part of the industry.” Theriot struggled initially with the cash flow side of his upstart business and went back to doing industrial construction. “I went to work up and down the ship channel building refineries. Worked myself up to being a project manager after being a pipe superintendent,” he said. He kept the air conditioning business going on the side, but after marrying Sheryl in 1988 and having the first of their two children a few years later, he had to make a decision about continuing as an employee or take his burgeoning business full time. By the mid-1990s he was a one-man heating and air conditioning operation. Over the years he has hired several technicians, but, considering himself to be a teacher and mentor, has watched most of them go off and start their own businesses. “I want you to learn enough to stand on your own two feet and go make a living for your family,” he said. In many ways Theriot considers his customers like family. “I stay a little bit longer on a call than I should because I find out a little bit more about them,” he said. “As I’m getting older, probably 60 percent of my clientele I can drive to their house without a GPS. I know the area well.” Theriot understands that many of his customers are on fixed incomes, and

Sheryl and John Theriot have been married 30 years. repairing or replacing outdated air conditioning units can be costly and a huge stress. If possible, he will troubleshoot a problem on the phone, as some cases don’t require a visit. A flip of a switch can often solve a problem. On the commercial side, he has done some very high profile jobs, including 11 local Planet Fitness centers, Nino’s, Vincent’s, and Grappino’s restaurants, Revolution Studios, Twenty-Two Fifty Interiors, and now GolfTEC, to name a few. Although Theriot works out of his house, he does keep supplies in a small warehouse in Stafford. “I keep most of my material and stuff in it just to have stuff readily available whenever the parts houses are closed on the weekends,” he said. Not only does he like to be prepared for weekend emergencies, he also keeps abreast of changes in the industry. “There are so many different brands and the innovation of air conditioning business changes so quick; it’s just like computers. You have to update every two years or so on your technology,” he said. “We have to keep up to date and go to classes to keep up with the technology of

some of the different brands,” he said. “I use a lot of RUUD equipment, yet you have to stay up to snuff on Trane, American Standards, Carrier, York equipment also.” Of all the brands he works with, RUUD is his preferred brand because of its reliability. Theriot works on all the major brands and said the key to any of them performing well is proper installation. “If they’re installed correctly to begin with, they’re going to run better,” he said. Theriot makes sure that he and his technicians do their best to do every job correctly and affordably. “I pride myself on all the jobs I’ve done in the past and continue to do whatever I can to keep maintenance contracts with a lot of commercial jobs I’ve done,” he said.

UNCLE HONEY’S CONTINUED...pg.13

for Petro Chemical, servicing equipment up and down the coast. On his three consecutive days off, he was in his home kitchen trying to create the perfect teacake. He tried and created and gave away tons of teacakes until he said he created the perfect mix of delicately sweet, crispy and cake texture. His pastor’s wife tasted them and dubbed them “the best teacakes in the whole wide world,” which he uses as a slogan. The church ordered 80 dozen and Richard’s wife noted while watching him in the kitchen, “honey, you look so at peace when you are baking.” Once he decided to step out on faith and pursue his passion, he took all his vacation three years ago and announced he would not continue in the energy industry. His wife found the Stafford site and their business has slowly grown to have product in 10 stores and 90 percent of their business is repeat traffic and word of mouth with new customers. His mother, who lived with them, bought him his first commercial mixer before she died and he vowed he would

not let it go to waste. Once he perfected the taste of his teacakes the business was off. Renae Richard said the success of their business is because they have been faithful to God, asking God to order their steps.

“This is God’s work. It’s all because of him The Scriptures says he will bless the works of your hands and that’s exactly what it is,” she said. “We’ve got a team like no other and it makes me proud to see what God is doing.”

The Grid reveals new look for old TI site New tenants named By Theresa D. McClellan Fort Bend Business Journal

hen people talk about Stafford’s upcoming go-to spot called the Grid, it’s so much more than burgers. The revamping of the former Texas Instruments site bordered by Highway 59, Airport Road, Murray Road/FM1092 and Kirkwood Road into a $550 million multi-use entertainment, housing, and office space site has city officials excited. Additionally, the recent unveiling of new businesses had some agog over Stafford nabbing the Houston area’s first In-N- Out Burger franchise. The Street Level Investments development features more than hamburgers. During a Stafford Economic Development meeting, president Wen Guerra told the council he was more

excited about the Drive Shack, a New York-based golf entertainment concept site, which is expected to tee up the visitors to Stafford. Felecia Evans Smith likened the Drive Shack to its nearest competition, Top Golf. “It’s Top Golf on steroids; it’s so much, much more and it will be in Stafford,” said Evans Smith president of the East Fort Bend Development Authority. Developers have signed leases from Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar, Outback Steakhouse and Pluckers Wing Bar, which have locations in Katy or Sugar Land. There are also plans for a health club, theatre, dog park, residential units, rooftop patios, and food halls with live entertainment venues in the project that will be unveiled in sections. The first section is scheduled for the first quarter of 2019. “I’m excited about the whole

development itself for the Stafford residents and the entire Fort Bend County area,” said SEDC Executive Director Patti Worfe. “I’m pleased with the fact that they are working to try and bring things that are different and we all benefit. They are not trying to steal from Sugar Land or Missouri City but to bring new things to the area and make people come here,” said Worfe. Since the September unveiling, Worfe said her office has been receiving multiple calls from parties interested in the area. She informed the council of a restaurateur who wants to get into The Grid and another vendor for hotel linens who is interested. “I’ve got a lot of phone calls from potential tenants both restaurants and retail and I send them back to Street Level leasing agents. I’ve already got a request for office space and that is set for 2020 when it comes on board. There is an

OAKBEND MEDICAL CENTER

exceeding expectations in Wharton From Staff Reports When the Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton closed its doors in November of 2016, the sign on the front door directed people to a hospital 20 minutes away. That can seem like an eternity if the patient is in pain or in need of urgent medical care. After a long and sometimes bumpy ride, OakBend Medical Center took on the challenge to establish a hospital in the building that formerly housed Gulf Coast Medical Center and bring emergency and medical services back to Wharton. In the first eight weeks after opening OakBend Medical Center Wharton, the hospital is exceeding expectations. From the opening on June 4 through July 30, the hospital’s signature No Wait Hospital Emergency Room has seen more than 1,500 patients. The radiology department has been busy as well, handling more than

1,300 patients with its CT, ultrasound and x-ray services. When the hospital first opened, services offered included the emergency, imaging, inpatient and observation (for short stays). Since that time, the hospital has added telemetry services to assist the nurses in monitoring inpatients’ vital signs and on July 11, OakBend began doing endoscopic procedures such as colonoscopy and upper gastrointestinal studies. In the near future, outpatient surgical services such as eye, orthopedic, hernia repair, gall bladder removal, foot procedures will also be available in Wharton. There is more to come as OakBend works on providing other types of inpatient physician services that will enable us to treat more complex conditions. The hospital’s medical group, OakBend Medical Group, has several of its doctors working part time in Wharton to serve the community. Dr. Long Cao, cardiologist; Dr.

Amber Dobyne, OB/GYN and Dr. Sadia Durrani, OB/GYN work every Thursday afternoon and Dr. Fred Speck, orthopedics, works every Tuesday afternoon at 10119 US Highway 59 in Wharton in the offices of Mark Marconi, D.O. Appointments can be made by calling 281-238-7870. OakBend has been fortunate to have some of its cardiologists provide classes to the EMS (ambulance) departments of Austin County, East Bernard, El Campo and Wharton. It was an opportunity to not only introduce OakBend to the area EMS departments, but to also begin a long term relationship. “OakBend Medical Center was eager to open its doors in Wharton,” said Joe Freudenberger, CEO of OakBend Medical Center, “We believed that the community deserved exceptional healthcare and we are making that happen. We are proud to include Wharton as part of our family and we look forward to a long lasting partnership.”

excitement in the air and people are feeling it,” Worfe said. “For a while it did not look like the project would happen. It has been a long time coming and a couple times I questioned if it would get here and I’m excited for all of us. It’s a great day for Stafford,” said Worfe. Evans Smith, president of the East Fort Bend Development Authority, which oversees the public and private side of 192 acres, said this project will “bring some new life to this end of the county. “We were missing entertainment and venues that are different. Haven’t had this since The Fountains opened in Stafford. Now, this will be a great location and people will make it a destination. I’m excited about the economic potential because of the fact that it is on this side of the county and you won’t have to travel to the Houston area for entertainment, dinner, and hotels,” she said. For the last six years, the city has been exploring what to do with the 192 acres of the former Texas Instruments campus after the company moved to Sugar Land. Street Level Investments developers had a $500 million proposal for the property that they say could become a

regional attraction for Stafford with shops, a central park, restaurants, highend apartments, food halls with artisan chefs and a hotel. About $500,000 from the hotel tax will be used for advertising to generate tourism and attract more money to the area. The developers created partnerships

with the Stafford Economic Development Corporation, Fort Bend County, and the city. “I’ve had a young man come and say, I’m so excited that we will have a place that my friends will want to come to. It’s great to have a neat place we are proud of and looking forward to spending our time and money here,” said Worfe.

Get healthier, save money with bioenergetic scan A must read for Flexible Spending Account (FSA) users By Joe Southern The Fort Bend Business Journal It’s that time of year when the holidays are approaching and cold and flu season is on the rise. With careful planning, people can take steps to protect and improve their health and spend wisely while doing it. Many Americans have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or a Health Savings Account (HSA) that allows them to pay for medical expenses with pre-tax dollars. For some, those funds run dry on Dec. 31. That’s why Dr. Ferryl McClain, a bioenergetic pharmacist, encourages those who want to stay healthy and become healthier to visit her office inside Haeckerville Pharmacy near Sienna Parkway and Highway 6. Her bioenergetic scans are cutting-edge technology that is not yet covered by most insurance companies. They can, however, be funded by HSA and FSA accounts. Getting a scan done now, especially for those with use-it-or-lose-it accounts, is critical for those who want to improve their health while going into what is typically an unhealthy season. She uses her BioScan machine to measure the body’s energy levels through acupressure point readings. The process involves having a connector placed on the

patient’s chest while the patient holds a brass rod in one hand. McClain uses a probe to touch each acupressure point on the patient’s fingers and toes. The computer analyzes the data and produces a very detailed report. With the use of her BioScan machine, McClain can detect ailments and proper function of organs in the body. The same machine scans medications, vitamins, and such to make sure they are helping and not causing more harm. “I’m finding that 80 to 90 percent of the vitamins patients are taking are actually hurting them versus healing them,” she said. Bioenergetics is a holistic system that combines Eastern and Western medicine to help heal the entire body and prevent disease. “In America it’s like a totally new concept,” she said. “I feel like it’s more proactive than a typical blood test.” McClain said patients are best served while they are healthy because the BioScan can detect things before they manifest themselves physically. It helps people of all ages from children to seniors with everything from ADHD and allergies to typical ailments that send people to see their doctor. With supplements, the correct pharmaceutical protocol, or simple changes in diet, McClain can help people restore and improve their overall health.

“The patient gets to pick their own path to wellness and I simply match them to the correct options,” she said. With bioenergetics, McClain advises not waiting until you are sick before coming in. “Bioenergetics is for those who are healthy. Let’s get you more health because you don’t know what you don’t know,” she said. “I help you build up your health so when bad health times hit, you have a reserve to draw from and you can still stay in the health zone.” McClain said most people don’t pay attention to their health until they get sick. Her approach is to try and prevent illness. “Most medical models go from disease to health,” she said. “Preventative medicine is basically avoiding disease and staying healthy. Bioenergetics takes you from either disease or health to more health.” When a patient undergoes a bioenergetic test, they are given a score of their health. “The goal is for 70 to 75 percent of the organs to be in green (healthy levels). Bioenergetics is a process we work through together and the patient can choose how aggressively they want to work for that goal and have a scientific tool to measure that improvement,” McClain said. To learn more, call 281-915-0793 or email info@bioeworks.com. To schedule an appointment, visit www.bioeworks.com.

TSTC alum finds success in hobby turned career From Staff Reports

As a child, Harlingen native Hunter Warner would help his father and friends work on cars and trucks. So wasting no time at all, when he was faced with figuring out his future after high school he enrolled in the Diesel Equipment Technology program at Texas State Technical College in Rosenberg. His only challenge was having to move away from home for the first time. Although there were other diesel programs in the valley, the now 20-year-old knew TSTC was the right fit for him because of his financial situation, it was a two-year program versus four-year and it was a brand new campus. “I had always heard about TSTC and it always came highly recommended by teachers and friends,” said Warner. “So when I heard about the new campus in Rosenberg and the new diesel program, I jumped on it. But moving away is never easy.” Like with any move, there were expenses to cover and for Warner who was a college student, there was also tuition, books and supplies. Fortunately, Warner received the TSTC Texan Success Scholarship and was able to transfer his sales representative position at Discount Tire to the Rosenberg location. “Although moving away was hard, it was overall a great experience and way of growing personally and professionally,” said Warner. “The training I received was invaluable. It laid my foundation.” Warner said he is a hands-on learner, so the majority of class time spent at the TSTC diesel lab working on assignments and projects with equipment actually used in industry helped him succeed. “School is not my forte. I learn by doing, not reading,” said Warner. “And although I did consider other colleges, TSTC stood out because of its hands-on learning.” Before Warner walked across the commencement stage in December 2017 to receive his certificate in diesel equipment technology, he had a job waiting for him with Ag-Pro Companies in Harlingen. “It was such a relief knowing I had a

He works hard and has ambition.” In fact, Warner will be attending a week-long session at John Deere School getting further training on electrics and hydraulics. Warner describes his job more as a hobby than actual work because he loves it so much, and he credits TSTC’s Placement Officer Judy Cox and his diesel program instructors for helping him open this chapter.

The Texas economy added 15,600 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs in September. Annual employment growth for Texas was 3.3 percent in September, marking 27 consecutive months of annual growth. “Texas employers continue to contribute to our state’s success with private-sector employers adding 16,700 jobs in September and accounting for an impressive 402,500 jobs over the year,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chair Ruth Ruggero Hughs. “Texas’ continued addition of jobs over a 27-month period demonstrates the competitive advantage and market

opportunities available to our Texas employers and world-class workforce.” September’s annual growth in the state’s goods producing industries was strong at 6.9 percent. Over the month, construction added 3,000 jobs, followed by the manufacturing industry with 2,800 positions, while mining and logging employment expanded by 2,600 positions. In Texas’ service providing sector, financial activities added 5,800 positions over the month, and led all industries in job growth for September.
