There’s no place like home The movie “Wizard of Oz” spawned the evergreen phrase, “There’s no place like home,” which has become one of the world’s most wellknown statements. And this month’s featured organization does its best to make its residents feel at home every day. Tucked away near Missouri City, Quail Valley holds the distinction as Fort Bend County’s first master-planned community, which has seen multiple generations of residents since its official inception in 1969. The community sits on a tract of land that was originally owned by Dr. Hampton Robinson, who purchased much of the acreage from Ruth Dew Lalley. Legend has it that Quail Valley got its name due to a stream of quail that made it their home.

Hampton Robinson, Jr. later bought more land in addition to his father’s property. His modern design house, which remains in the neighborhood, was completed in the late 1950s. The community will soon celebrate 50 years of making those within its neighborhood feel at home, whether they’re lifetime residents or cross-country transplants. There will be events commemorating the neighborhood’s heritage, which has stood the test of time entering its fifth decade of existence. So inside this month’s Business Journal, read the story about how Quail Valley came to be and how it’s celebrating its roots all the way through to the present day. You might just wind up feeling like a part of the community yourself.

HOPSKIPDRIVE Offers transportation service for Fort Bend kids By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Fort Bend County resident Aliya Qureshi

had been jobless for years, so getting her 14-year-old daughter to and from activities wasn’t difficult. But she saw how her friends and working moms in the area were struggling

to balance their child’s activities with fulltime employment, so she stepped in to help while also helping herself. Qureshi has become one of HopSkipDrive’s first drivers in the Greater Houston area for HopSkipDrive, a transportation service for kids. “I remember my friends having to leave their jobs and go pick up and drop them off (before returning to work),” she said. “I think this system will be welcomed here, and everybody will be happy with it. It’s very safe and secure for the kids.” HopSkipDrive launched service in the Houston area, including Fort Bend County, on Aug. 26. Since its inception in 2014, the company has served families and schools in Arizona, California, Colorado, Virginia and the Washington, D.C. metro area. Joanna McFarland, the CEO and cofounder of HopSkipDrive, she said was struggling to get her son to karate lessons after school when she attended a birthday party five years ago and realized other moms had transportation challenges. “I jokingly said, ‘We should throw money in a hat, buy a van, and have moms in the neighborhood drive all the kids around’,” McFarland said. “One of my cofounders looked at me and said, ‘Yeah, let’s do that.’ ” McFarland and co-founders Janelle McGlothlin and Caroyln Yashari Becher, who have a total of eight kids who attend five different schools, were full-time working moms in Los Angeles when the company was born. They have driven more than 625,000 kids to over 6,000 schools with “nannies on wheels.” Parents can use the HopSkipDrive app or website to request rides to and from school or extracurricular activities for children ages 6 and older. Rides can be reserved as little as eight hours in advance or by 7 p.m. the night before for morning rides, and parents can customize ride instructions such as carpool line and pickup and drop-off notes such as sign-in/out requests. “As a working mother of two, I understand how challenging it is to balance your children’s ever-changing daily schedules with workplace demands,” McFarland said. “Parents shouldn’t have to CONTINUES...

choose between their careers and their children’s education and activities, but that tough choice is very real for countless families. We want parents to take comfort in knowing they have a caregiver to rely on to get their kids where they need to go, safely and without worry.” In order to become a “CareDriver,” a person must have at least five years of caregiving experience and pass a 15-point certification process, which includes background checks and fingerprinting. Before the ride, parents receive a photo profile of their CareDriver, which they can share with their child and their school. Parents can book and track rides from start to finish through HopSkipDrive’s mobile app and get live text notifications. Each child also has a code word the CareDriver will use to confirm the ride. In addition, HopSkipDrive’s Safe Ride Support (SRS), staffed with former 911 operators, EMTs, childcare specialists and parents, monitors every ride in real time. Rides start at $17 – comparable to the hourly rate of a driving babysitter – and increase according to time and distance to a destination. The

service also partners with school districts to simplify specialized transportation for students with special needs, youth in foster care and school choice placements that don’t fit neatly into a bus routing plan. “We do far more than most families even do to find a nanny or caregiver,” McFarland said. “It was personal to me, and I realized there really wasn’t a solution out there so we decided to create one. “We wanted to design it for our own kids, with safety from the ground up. We thought about what it would take for us to feel comfortable and tried to incorporate that into the product.” Barely a week into her endeavor as a driver, Qureshi has already seen the impact those measures can have on a child and parent’s mind. “It provides immediate peace of mind,” she said. “This is a very good thing they’ve brought here.” For more information about HopSkipDrive, visit hopskipdrive. com and download the app to check service availability. Schools can learn how to partner with HopSkipDrive by emailing partnerships@hopskipdrive. com.

QUAIL VALLEY

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF BEING HOME BY LISA GLENN Quail Valley, Fort Bend County’s first master planned community, has been home to at least three generations of families and residents from Texas and all over the world. This year this community celebrates its 50th anniversary and is planning a celebration on Nov. 15 to applaud this vintage subdivision for its small town feel, unique homes, and tight knit community that has weathered the storms of change with the grace of a steel magnolia.

In 1969, developers Jim Mac Naughton, Tom Overstreet and Bob Kerry envisioned the 2530 acres of land along Oyster Creek as a large country-club oriented community of homes around a golf course. As time passed and more people relocated to Quail Valley from surrounding areas and its development became the single most important factor contributing to Missouri City’s subsequent development and growth. In 1985 Mac Naughton gave up control of

The land that is Quail Valley was originally owned by Dr. Hampton Robinson, who purchased much of the acreage from Ruth Dew Lalley, and at that time the land was considered the family’s “country home.” It was said he named it Quail Valley because a great many quail made it their habitat. Eventually his son, Hampton Robinson, Jr. acquired more of the property and his modern design house, featured in the Houston Chronicle, was completed in 1958 and still stands within the subdivision.

As of 2007, the original portion of Quail Valley was made up of 15 sub-divisions and over 3000 homes governed by the by-laws and deed restrictions of the Quail Valley Fund, overseen for many decades by Cecil Willis, who eventually became a Stafford City Councilman. Looking back the rich history of Quail Valley is the underlying infrastructure that makes it so unique! The Quail Valley Country

Club hosted the Houston Open in 1973 and 1974, though it was then a different combination of holes than what is played today at the now Quail Valley Golf Club. In the 1970’s this iconic community was also the home to many of the Houston Astros and Houston Oilers. Former Houston Oiler Coach Ed Biles, player Greg Bingham, and Scout Miller Mc Calmon all still reside within the community. At that time there was also a “Newk’s Racquet Club,” that started with the four La Quinta Courts (no longer there); yet as the club’s membership grew, six more courts went under construction in 1975 along with the Recreation Center which was built around the standing basket ball courts and eventually Little League Fields. In 1976 John Newcome joined the scene to build a beautiful tennis facility that would include six covered courts and eight outdoor courts. Over time it would host the Annual Dean Scott Tennis Tournament each year which was fun for all. In 1999 “the ugly ole” wall at Cartwright Road and Murphy Road came down giving passers-by a beautiful vista of the golf course and lake beyond, framed by a landscape design donated by Quail Valley’s John O’Malley, owner of Legacy Landscape Management, Inc. The City of Missouri City, Quail Valley Proud, and the Quail Valley Fund all partnered to make the then “new look” a reality. The spherical sign between two beautiful Live Oaks finally gave the community “the sense of arrival” it truly deserved! In 2005 the building of the Fort Bend Tollway exiting into neighboring Lake Olympia Subdivision gave Quail Valley’s housing market a shot in the arm with a an easy access gateway for residents and visitors to travel to and from Houston, the Medical Center or out of town. “There’s no place like home,” said Dorothy from the Wizard of OZ. Like her survival of a wicked witch and a tornado, Quail Valley survived the upheaval of the Renaissance Golf Group’s take over and deterioration of the community’s centerpiece, the Quail Valley Country Club. In November, 2008 Voters city-wide approved a $17.5 million parks bond referendum to support Quail Valley and other city parks projects. The Quail Valley Fund also gave the city $150,000 for improvements. “People who had bought a house on the golf course, had a house on a pasture,” said Charlie Butera, former President of the Quail Valley Fund, in a 2010 Houston Chronicle article. The settlement with Renaissance Golf Group LLC ended an eminent domain case that had been set for trial and that cleared the way for ongoing redevelopment of the 390-acre club as a municipal golf course and park. “This action is in the best interest of our city,” CONTINUES...

said then Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen. The Quail Valley Golf Course is alive and well, host to hundreds of tournaments and a programming site for First Tee of Houston. In 2011 our country was struck with the horror of “9-11,” and Quail Valley responded the following May with a “Kids, Bike, Dog and Wagon,” Memorial Day Parade that is now an annual event to remind our young ones not only of the sacrifices of that day, yet the sacrifices our military, our police officers and fire fighters make each day of the year on our behalf. Allen Owen wears a big top hat and leads the parade in a golf cart following a Missouri City Fire Truck which kids of every age get to experience before and after the event. The sense of community this neighborhood holds dear is also home to The Woman’s Club of Missouri City (the city’s oldest social club), service organizations such as the Exchange Club of Missouri City noted for their lively St. Patrick’s Day Tournament, and the Oyster Creek Rotary Club. It is also the setting for the Quail Valley Garden Club, “Quails,” and the Quail Valley and Thunderbird Book Clubs just to name a few. These social clubs and organizations interchange and network, raising funds for worthy causes all knitting a nest of real care and concern, the kind Mr. Rogers talked about when he said, “Won’t you be my neighbor.” Yes, there is no place like home and no place like Quail Valley where neighbors are truly neighbors!

Among activities available for Quail Valley residents is couples tennis, as shown here. - Contributed Photo The Quail Valley Fund represents residents during the 2006 Snow Fest Paradise. - Contributed Photo

Free cleaning for woman battling breast cancer By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Lorna Broomfield, who owns a local housecleaning business, knows firsthand how chemotherapy treatments can drain energy from a person as they battle cancer. Sugar Land resident Susan Phillips is engaged in such a battle and unable to perform her typical housecleaning duties due to limited mobility following multiple surgeries. Broomfield is now helping Phillips through a nationwide partnership called “Cleaning For A Reason” that has connections in Fort Bend County. Cleaning For A Reason is a nonprofit organization that provides free housecleaning services to women undergoing cancer treatment. Since beginning in 2006, Cleaning For A Reason has partnered with maid services such as Broomfield’s You’ve Got Maids Sugar Land to clean for more than 30,000 women in the United States and Canada. For Broomfield, the cause hits close to home as her sister lost her battle with

cancer in 2017. That experience inspired her partnership with Cleaning For A Reason. “I remember each time she completed a treatment, she always said she didn’t feel good for quite a few hours,” Broomfield said. “I just thought giving the gift of a clean home could provide a little bright spot in their day. They’re always so grateful for it, and they can focus just on themselves for just a quick minute without having to worry about it.” Enter Phillips, who is currently battling HER2positive – an aggressive form of breast cancer that has required multiple surgeries You’ve Got Maids of Sugar Land franchise owner this year. ANTICIPATION BUILDING FOR STAFFORD’S GRID PROJECTS By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Though it was previously said to be behind schedule, “The Grid” continues to take shape in Stafford. Signs are now up for some of the soon-to-open tenants, such as the Greater Houston area’s first In-N-Out Burger. Construction of the California-based fast-food restaurant – which is expected to be completed this fall – appears to be stirring up a strong reaction. “Animal Style (burgers) will soon be had!” Dawn Boyd said in a comment on The Grid’s recent Facebook post advertising In-N-Out. “A little taste of Cali, I can’t wait!” Construction continues on the 192-acre development positioned on what used to be the campus for Texas Instruments between West Airport Boulevard and South Kirkwood Road off Highway 59, which developers hope will help make Stafford a destination city. And residents aren’t the only ones enthused about the possibilities the development will bring.

Construction continues on a hotel planned for The Grid in Stafford. The 192-acre project has multiple confirmed tenants such as Aloft Hotel, In-N-Out Burger, Whiskey Cake Kitchen & Bar and Outback Steakhouse. (Photo by Landan Kuhlmann) “We are excited to become a part of the vibrant Stafford community and the new mixed-used project known as ‘The Grid’,” In-N-Out said in a statement released in August, according to a report from ABC 13. In addition to a diverse mix of retail shops and entertainment venues, The Grid will also include 500,000 square feet of office space and a network of pocket parks, The Fort Bend Business Journal H October 2019

jogging and bike trails upon completion, which developers hope is by 2021. The development also includes plans for a dualconcept hotel split between Aloft Hotels and Element. Work on the hotels began in June, with a targeted completion date of early 2020. GRID CONTINUES PG 14...

range and golf shop – are both expected open in November as Phase 1 of the project takes shape, according to multiple media reports. Pluckers Wing Bar is another confirmed tenant, while StreetLevel Investments – the developer on the project – remain in negotiations with other tenants for the development, such as movie theatres and craft breweries, according to the project’s website.

StreetLevel’s Brian Murphy told attendees at a Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce breakfast in March that project construction for the $500 million endeavor had been set slightly behind schedule by delays from events such as Hurricane Harvey and more, but that they still hope to be completed by the 2021 target. cleaned by Broomfield on multiple occasions. “Between battling infections from multiple surgeries and chemotherapy treatments, and then raising multiple teenagers, I’ve had a lot of things going on,” Phillips said. Broomfield and You’ve Got Maids provide women with two cleaners for two hours for the entirety of a cancer treatment period, customizing the service to their individual cleaning needs. Since opening in October 2018, the business has provided service to six cancer patients. “When I heard all about what it was all about, the idea automatically attracted me,” Broomfield said. “I thought it was a great way to give back to the community.” It was initially an odd

arrangement for Phillips, who had never before enlisted a maid service. “I’ve always done my own cleaning,” she said. “With limited funds, housecleaning is just not something we can justify spending money on. Up until the surgeries, I had two hands and I used them.” But with her and her family now having been the beneficiary of Broomfield and You’ve Got Maids’ partnership with Cleaning for A Reason, Phillips is grateful and calls them a “godsend.” “It’s such a relief to have someone come in and clean without you having to worry about it,” Phillips said. “After they go, it’s like you’re walking through an entirely new house. It’s like the cleaning fairies came in. We’ve got so much on our plates right now, it was such a relief to have someone take that off our plates for a while.”
