Missouri City dance studio making dreams come true Robin’s Dance Studio may not seem like much at first glance, making its home just off Glenn Lakes Lane in Missouri City. But once inside, dreams have been coming true since it first opened in 1973. Robin Kelley first opened her studio in Stafford more than 40 years ago, eager to offer an expanding repertoire of dance classes and training to students of all ages. Current owner Melanie Pede began dancing at Robin’s when she was 6 years old and has now been teaching ballet, tap and jazz at the studio for 18 years since returning as an instructor when her two daughters began dancing. She took over the studio from Kelley in 2007 upon her retirement and has continued the tradition of of providing instruction of classic dance technique and performance skills as well as teaching the students to be respectful, grateful and polite. But to hear her talk about it, the students
are blessing her more than she could ever bless them, through performance at their annual shows and more. Further, when she spoke about programs such as Hearts in Motion Dance Academy, which the studio provides for children with Down syndrome, the compassion in her voice was palpable. She says seeing the joy on young faces through dance is more reward than she could give them – even though rewards have included trips to Disney World to learn from industry professionals. She may have called the children inspiring, but to me there’s no more inspiring quality than the desire to give back and help create lasting memories. That’s exactly what Robin’s Dance Studio is doing in Fort Bend County. Be sure to check out their story inside today’s Business Journal, and give them a visit. You won’t be sorry.

GEORGE LAUNCHES COUNTY’S FIRST TECHNOLOGY TASK FORCE By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com A task force aimed at creating more jobs for an underutilized workforce, while simultaneously launching Fort Bend County forward as a major technology hub, is under way. Fort Bend County Judge KP George announced in August that he has partnered with Tom Webb, vice president of strategic initiatives and customer relations for Sugar Land-based Heavy Construction Systems Specialists, to launch the county’s first technology task force. “This partnership is critical because we often refer to HCSS as the ‘Google’ of Sugar Land,” George said. “Tom and his team have a shared vision with the county that we are strategically positioned in the metro area, graduate and house dense concentrations of highly educated professionals, and enjoy a great quality of life – all essential aspects for tech companies.” George said several factors make Fort Bend attractive to technology companies. “As one of the most diverse and educated communities in the state situated with a strategic geographic advantage in the Houston area, Fort Bend County is a natural fit for tech and innovation companies,” he said in a news release. “Our unparalleled workforce, strategic location, high quality master-planned communities and excellent schools stand out among the region as a top destination for 21stcentury businesses.”
L to R: Jeff Wiley, Fort Bend Economic Development Council President & CEO; Andrew Van Chau, Principal/Owner Quo Vadis Strategies LLC; Fort Bend County Judge KP George; Tom Webb, VP Strategic Initiatives & Customer Relations; and Jay Neal, Associate VP and COO for University of Houston at Sugar Land. (Contributed photo) Should those companies choose to make their home in Sugar Land, Webb said an area with an overabundance of employable technology workers would be buoyed. “I’ve had this vision for years and believe that Fort Bend has all the components and more to be a regional technology hub,” Webb said in a news release. “… Fort Bend has a highly educated workforce with a strong background in (information technology), and we have one of the most diverse workforces in the entire country. That is important for a technology company that wants to go global.” The University of Houston’s Sugar Land campus is a Tier One university with a heavy focus on technology. Sixty percent
of the school’s undergraduate programs are within the College of Technology, while 30 percent of its master’s programs are within the technology college, according to the county. Webb said he plans to keep the core task force between 8-10 members, though there could be subcommittees depending on need. Their first order of business, he said, will be to capitalize on Fort Bend County’s assets, which includes being close to oil and gas companies and international shipping channels. “Then, we want to aggressively recruit other technology companies,” he said. “We want quick wins and then put together a long-term vision for Fort Bend. Every tech hub in the world has a specialty, so that’s something we have to consider.”

From Staff Reports An area entertainment hot spot has reached a milestone as the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land celebrated its one millionth customer last month, according to a news release from the city. Prior to a performance by Rascal Flatts on Aug. 29, Sugar Land Mayor Joe Zimmerman, Smart Financial CEO Larry Seidl and Smart Financial Centre General Manager David Skinner recognized the millionth fan, who received prizes such as a guitar signed by the members of Rascal Flatts and a suite for an upcoming performance. Zimmerman also issued a proclamation on behalf of the city recognizing the millionth fan and the significant milestone

Can a repair facility save me from paying my deductible?
An honest repair shop will always say “no” to saving deductibles. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance carrier. It basically Chuck Charlton says that if you have a collision loss, you are responsible for the first portion of repairs (your deductible) and the insurance company will pay the rest. If the final repair cost is less, you’re still responsible for the predetermined deductible amount. Any reduction should correctly go back to the insurance company. There are legitimate ways to reduce your cost. An appearance allowance (credit towards your deductible usually for minor cosmetic repairs not completed) is one way but must be consulted with your insurance company. Be wary of the repair shop that offers to save you your deductible. Are they completing all repairs or is your safety being jeopardized with an inadequate repair?
May God Bless our Men and Women in the Military

ROBIN’S DANCE STUDIO MISSOURI CITY STUDIO CREATING MEMORIES THROUGH DANCE
COVER STORY
LANDAN KUHLMANN
BY
Robin’s Dance Studio is more than 40 years old, but it’s still dancing its way into the hearts of the community in Fort Bend County. Robin Kelley founded Robin’s Dance Studio (RDS) in Stafford in 1973 to share her love of an expanding variety of dance education for boys and girls of all ages, before consolidating it to a spot just off Highway 6 in Missouri City a few years later. Current owner Melanie Stinson Pede began dancing at Robin’s when she was 6 years old, quickly finding a love of dance that continued through high school. She has now been teaching ballet, tap and jazz at the studio for 16 years since returning as an instructor when her two daughters began dancing. She took over the studio from Kelley in 2007 upon her retirement and has continued Kelley’s tradition of providing instruction of classic dance technique and performance skills as well as teaching the students to be respectful, grateful and polite. “RDS is considered a family,” Pede said. Now consolidated to one building at 3643 Glenn Lakes Ln. in Missouri City, the studio offers dance instruction for ballet, tap, jazz, hip-hop, pointe, lyrical and Leaps & Turns for ages 3 and up. Students then get to show off what they’ve learned at the studio’s annual holiday performance at Stafford Civic Center. This year’s event is scheduled for Dec. 13. The studio also puts on an annual recital at the Stafford Performing Arts Centre, which is scheduled for May 9, 2020. Students have the opportunity to perform in a musical theatre production number in the recital, where past performances have included The Lion King, Oklahoma and Aladdin. Robin’s Dance Studio also offers a Company Dance program, which provides students the opportunity to travel to regional dance conventions and competitions, perform outside the studio and participate in master classes taught by industry professionals. This past summer, the dancers travelled to Walt Disney World and participated in the Disney
8
Performing Arts Dance Workshop. “We hope to provide fun memories, good friendships and a love of dance that continues for a lifetime,” Pede said. A most special program, however, is the most meaningful of all. Robin’s Dance Studio also offers the Hearts in Motion Dance Academy for children with Down syndrome. This program offers a Saturday morning class focusing on increasing dance and coordination skills while also enhancing their selfrespect, self-discipline, social interaction and determination. RDS students assist the class and perform with the dancers in their annual recital. “This program was inspired by the pure innocent joy these children possess and the desire to share the love of dance with them,” Pede said. “Watching them experience the freedom and happiness dance provides each week is an inspiration to all of us.” For more information on the studio’s classes, registration, programs and performances, visit robinsdancestudio.com or call them at 281-499-3921.

Construction on Grand at Aliana now underway By Landan Kuhlmann LKuhlmann@fortbendstar.com Josh Friedlander of NewQuest Properties knows that with Fort Bend County expanding, there’s no such thing as too much shopping. The area will soon see signs of another development in Richmond aimed at serving one of the nation’s fastest-growing counties. NewQuest Properties has begun work on the first phase of its planned 400,000 square-foot mixed-use development, coined the Grand at Aliana. Friedlander said the company’s work began on the land at the northeast corner of West Grand Parkway South and Airport Boulevard in 2017 before officially acquiring it in 2018. Anchors for the project – situated between the Aliana and Harvest Green subdivisions in Richmond – will include 24 Hour Fitness and Burlington Coat Factory along with Five Below and Ulta Beauty. Restaurants such as Jason’s Deli and Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, as well as service centers such as Timewise and Express Oil, are also among confirmed tenants. There also will be green space between the restaurants for families to play and picnic. “To get this sort of center with strong anchors is pretty special,” Friedlander said. “There’s not many of these power centers coming up these days.” Friedlander said NewQuest has long coveted the intersection of West Airport and the Grand Parkway, which shares a border with the existing Target superstore. He said the Grand at Aliana will essentially become an extension of the superstore. The company hopes to complete construction of the site’s 200,000 square-foot first phase and deliver its first tenants in the second quarter of next year. The rest of the property is slated to be completed and delivered by the end of 2021 or early 2022. Friedlander said there is still leasing space available. For potential leasing opportunities, call NewQuest at 281-477-4300 and ask for Friedlander or David Meyers. “A lot of it is still just land where we can build all different sizes of property,” Friedlander said. “There’s still plenty of space left, and we’re still hoping to attract more quality restaurants, retail and medical services.” The Fort Bend Business Journal H September 2019
