For decades Canada has been home to some of the finest and most recognized children’s entertainers in the world. Now, a new generation of children’s musicians and performers has emerged – including Will Stroet, West Coast wonder and star of the wildly popular Kids’ CBC series Will’s Jams! After discovering he had a knack for writing songs that strongly resonated with kids, Stroet took a leap of faith and left his teaching position in 2009. Since then, he has recorded nine albums, in English and French, with his latest recording, Wordplay, earning him a Juno Award nomination. He’s hosted over 1,700 shows in this country and abroad, won a West Coast Songwriters Award and has been nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards. His list of achievements is lengthy and his alma mater recently honoured him with the UBC Education Top 100 Alumni Award. A father of two children and hero to thousands more, Stroet is also a board member with ArtStarts in schools, which supports art and creativity amongst BC’s youth. 6

How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5
Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. Ce ltara CELTIC/ROOTS Tuesday, February 19 • 2 PM • $15 St. Albert Community Hall Celtara, one of Alberta’s premier Celtic acts, has been able to
stay firmly rooted in tradition while creating a body of work that bubbles with originality. In 2007, the quintet burst onto the local scene with their debut album Until The Morning Light. Then in 2011, Bonnie Gregory, Andreas Illig, Tami Cooper, Steven Bell and Mark Arnison released More Than One True Love – which received strong support from CKUA Radio Network. Seven years later in 2018, the group celebrated their lasting musical friendship and communal creative energies with the long-awaited release of Seven Long Years. “This album was largely a live, off the floor session,” said Bonnie Gregory, a fiddle and harp-playing singer perhaps best-known for her outstanding work with Corb Lund. “Initially, we were primarily an instrumental band, but we’re much more song-driven now as you can hear on the new album. We’ll pick traditional songs, but with a great deal of work on arranging, we end up making them our own […] not that we still don’t love doing jigs and reels,” she added.

The Ultimate Golden Girls E x per ie nc e! COMEDY/THEATRE/PUPPETRY Saturday, February 23 • 7:30 PM • $39 Over the course of seven seasons (’85 – ’92), The Golden Girls owned television airwaves. Audiences ate up the weekly escapades of four older women – three divorcees and one widow – and their believable, yet highly charged and seriously funny interactions that consistently churned out wave after wave of laughs. The chemistry between Beatrice Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan, and Estelle Getty was simply sensational and critics responded in the same fashion as fans by rewarding them with three Golden Globes and 11 Emmys. In fact, all four stars also took home Emmy Awards, a significant and rarely repeated achievement. Now, nearly 35 years after its debut, a quartet of wise-cracking puppets named Dorothy, Sophia, Rose and Blanche are touring across the continent armed with the same jaw-dropping lines and taboo-breaking themes for a new generation of fans. Midnight cheesecake in the kitchen, hushed conversations on the lanai, snowy memories of St. Olaf and even poor Stan Zbornak all add up to a timeless and unforgettable twentieth century comedy classic. 14

Three beloved stories by Eric Carle, an award-winning and innovative children’s book illustrator and author, are retold on stage through the magic of black light and whimsical puppets. The Very Hungry Caterpillar follows the adventures of a tiny and, you guessed it, hungry caterpillar as he eats his way to becoming a beautiful butterfly! Then, high up in the sky, Little Cloud playfully transforms himself into a variety of creatures and objects – everything from an airplane to a shark. The Mixed-Up Chameleon, on the other hand, is bored with his life as he predictably sits and changes colour all day. After an adventurous trip to the zoo, he attempts to emulate the beautiful animals he sees before coming to the conclusion that there is value in being his unique self.
Mermaid Theatre of Nova Scotia has earned international recognition for their imaginative approach to storytelling with visuals that are augmented by the precise and thoughtful narration of the legendary Gordon Pinsent and a sympathetic musical score from Steven Naylor. From China and Ireland to the United States and Bahrain, this incredible show continues to tour the world and mesmerize countless youngsters. Eric Carle is a great fan of Mermaid Theatre who, according to the author, “creates a delightful performance” while “honouring the simplicity and integrity” of his books.

Lorraine Klaase n WORLD Wednesday, March 27 • 7:30 PM • $35
A Montréal-based singer and recording artist, Lorraine Klaasen, was born and raised in Soweto, South Africa. An outright force as a vocalist and live performer, her deep cultural roots are on full display as she immerses herself in the classic Township Music of her native country. Lorraine’s mother, legendary South African jazz-singer Thandie Klaasen, was her first inspiration and mentor, along with many other South African musical giants who were frequent visitors to the Klaasen family home. With material from her 2008 Africa Calling album, 2013 Juno Award-winning A Tribute to Miriam Makeba, as well as songs from her new and ambitious release Nouvelle Journée, a rich musical tapestry and cross-cultural journey will make it a night to remember. For this performance, Klaasen will sing in the Tsonga, Sotho, isiZulu and Xhosa languages of South Africa, as well as English and French. It shouldn’t come as a surprise, but her live shows are bolstered by the same infectious playing that has been a defining element of not only her albums, but also her career. 22
