WELCOME messages
Welcome to the Arden Theatre’s 2012-2013 season.
With the approach of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, our Government is pleased to celebrate all that makes Canada a remarkable country, including organizations like the Arden Theatre. For almost 30 years, this theatre has contributed to the cultural vitality of St. Albert and indeed Alberta as a whole, offering residents and visitors first-class performances designed to attract audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate everyone involved with the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
O
n behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to welcome everyone to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
Located in the heart of downtown St. Albert, the Arden Theatre is the city’s cultural soul, connecting community members in all walks of life to the joy of artistic performance. In the theatre’s seats, people of all ages have been captivated by the music, drama, magic and fun of the theatre’s diverse programming. As well as hosting internationally acclaimed entertainers, the theatre’s stage has showcased school performances and dance competitions, giving local talent a taste of the limelight. Just as important, the theatre’s lobby echoes 29 years of laughs and spirited conversation between friends, family and community members. My thanks to the numerous staff members, volunteers and arts enthusiasts for their dedication to supporting and promoting the Arden Theatre as a cherished cultural hub in St. Albert. Without further ado, enjoy the performance!
The Honourable Heather Klimchuk Minister of Culture and Community Services MLA, Edmonton-Glenora

W
elcome to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season! I invite you to take flight with the Arden and cultivate inspiration through rich artistic offerings. With an engaging and diverse program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, and film, your imagination will be soaring to new heights. Whether it’s their first appearance on our stage – like the iconic Cowboy Junkies or comedian Brent Butt, or they are returning due to popular demand – like the delightful Lunch at Allen’s or well-loved Matt Andersen – I am confident that whatever your mood or preference, you’ll find something this season that will excite your senses. For our younger audiences, we have a wonderful selection of family programming that promises a fun-filled and educational ride for children through the wondrous world of silly science, the quintessential sounds of New Orleans, and a multimedia presentation where the stage becomes an artist’s studio. St. Albert Children’s Theatre also brings to the Arden stage an adaptation of the wildly popular novel and blockbuster movie Legally Blonde, The Musical. Thank you to the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society, the many dedicated volunteers and the Cultural Services staff, for your efforts, year after year, in uniting us all with rich artistic experiences. Thank you for your ongoing support of cultural expression in our community. Now please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

DEL BARBER & BEN SURES Friday, January 25, 2013 8 pm Pre-show beer tasting at 7 pm in Progress Hall. For Winnipeg-based contemporary folk troubadour Del Barber, the ability to pen catchy hooks is a homecoming – a reconciliation of restlessness and experience. His third and latest album, Headwaters, is a collection of parables, hymns and manifestos, flowing through finely crafted confessionals and twang-kissed tales of desires lived, left and lost. As a 2012 Canadian Folk Music Award Nominee for Solo Artist of the Year, Del Barber tells warm, sincere and timeless stories with a tune in his heart and a guitar in hand. Drawing from his upbringing on the expansive Canadian prairies, he weaves in and out of charming and witty anecdotes and into song, claiming an ever-growing musical career that just keeps getting better. Ben Sures, a veteran of the folk and roots music scene, shares the Arden stage with Del Barber in this quaint double-header. His 2005 award in the prestigious John Lennon Songwriting Competition, for his song Any Precious Girl, is evidence of his originality and tenacious ability to flawlessly pick his way to the top of the guitar heap while telling an absorbing story in words that only the craftiest of lyricists could pen. His material comes from a special place and what may seem like pleasing folk-pop, but actually packs a lyrical and melodic punch that keeps on punching, long after the music’s over. Say hello to your longlost friend whose schoolyard musings now encompass a whole world of joy, sadness and everything-in-between, as can only be observed by a true character who has never lost the gift of observation and seeing things differently. sponsored by

Hot 8 brass band

The Hot 8 Brass Band was born and raised in the heart of New Orleans, where the infectious buzzing of trumpets, trombones and tubas make up the very pulse of the city. As the premiere purveyors of roof-raising, hip-hop charged and jazz-infused marching band music, the Hot 8 Brass Band performs with a trademark energy that turns their shows from a concert to an outright party. Since their recording debut in 2007, they have become a mainstay as one of New Orleans’ great musical resources. Having become a metaphor for the post-Katrina city, the band has preserved and endured in the face of unthinkable circumstances, encouraging a renewed sense of purpose through the most devastating of times. Having earned a reputation around New Orleans for adopting a contemporary style with deep African cultural roots, the Hot 8 have become the premiere Second-Line parade band for the city. At Second-Line parades, brass bands play and supporters follow along, dancing and clapping to the joyful thumping of intensely rhythmic flavours. Held nearly every weekend from September through June, these parades are powerful expressions of freedom and community, but since Katrina, they express an even deeper message. Hot 8 has emerged as a group that epitomizes the Sunday street sound of New Orleans, but has embellished with their own edge. Members of the Hot 8 Brass Band have toured in Japan, Italy, France, Spain, Finland, England and Sardinia, and the band has been featured in both Spike Lee documentaries, When the Levees Broke and If God is Willing and Da Creek Don’t Rise. Although many of the current members began playing together in high school, over time the line-up has inevitably shifted. Their latest album, The Life and Times of..., joins a collection of critically-acclaimed recordings.

“This place is called Kumsheen in our language… The place inside the heart where the blood mixes.”
Starring: Robert Benz, Lorne Cardinal, Craig Lauzon, Sera-Lys McArthur and Michaela Washburn Director: Bradley Moss Set and Lighting Designer: Cory Sincennes Costume Designer: Jeff Chief Sound Designer: Dave Clarke Stage Manager: Candice Charney
Bitingly funny and brutally honest, this highly acclaimed play takes us to the bottom of the river, to the heart of a People. Floyd and Mooch, raised in residential schools, are confronted with their past when Floyd’s daughter Christine returns to Kumsheen after twenty years. Her arrival unleashes a flood of memories and secrets forcing each of them to face the truth underlying not only their own history, but the history of a Nation. A moving story of redemption, humanity and survival.

CHARLES ROSS:
ONE MAN LORD OF THE RINGS ™
Wednesday, January 30, 2013 7:30 pm It seems like an impossible feat, but like Frodo saving Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron, one man rises to the occasion. Endorsed by Gandalf himself (well, actor Sir Ian McKellen), Canadian comic Charles Ross faithfully evokes every character, casts every spell, fights every battle and shrinks Peter Jackson’s epic film trilogy down to a hilarious fantasy-filled homage to one of the most popular series of all time. Alone on an empty stage, dressed in black, and assisted with simply a headset microphone and evocative lighting, Charles conjures segments of visual impact and memorable dialogue from The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, to create an enthralling work of physical and vocal virtuosity.
“It’s funny. Its sheer physicality is impressive as hell. And, should you happen to belong to that hopelessly nerdy subset of the population that can pick a Sindar elf out of a lineup of Noldor elves, it’s something else, too: something meaningful. Something moving. Something Precious.” – Washington City Paper Having already proven his interpretive abilities with his celebrated Off-Broadway show One Man Star Wars Trilogy, the longer and more complicated Lord of the Rings™ was the only logical next step for this sorcerer of the stage. Throwing himself about with abandon, Ross morphs through riveting stage fights, harrowing rescues, and brilliant sound effects in a brilliant re-enactment that is truly an amazing spectacle to watch. Brace yourself to be completely transported to another place and time through Charles Ross’ exceptional skill and your own wild imagination. “Based on the literature of J.R.R. Tolkien and produced with permission of The Saul Zaentz Company d/b/a Middle-earth Enterprises f/k/a Tolkien Enterprises, Berkley, CA. “The Lord of the Rings,”“The Fellowship of the Ring,”“The Two Towers,” are trademarks or registered trademarks of The Saul Zaentz Company d/b/a Middle-earth Enterprises”.

JEREMY FISHER R & EMM GRYNE Saturday, February 2, 2013  7:30 pm Two-time Juno Award nominee Jeremy Fisher is a storyteller that inhabits a one-of-a-kind musical landscape – timeless, yet imbued with a modern insight and perspective. The Ottawabased musician, whose tunes have a road-ready quality marked by years of busking with just his guitar and harmonica, recently released his fifth album, Mint Juleps. The acoustic-driven collection of songs represents both the sophistication of his music and the spontaneity and humour of his live shows that brings in audiences time after time. The combination of his trademark whimsy and wit found in his lyricism, with a strong visual component, has Jeremy Fisher bringing back the nearly forgotten art of making a great record from start to finish, and forging a career path that is built to endure. Emm Gryner has crafted a career that has allowed her musical freedom and the ability to follow her passions wherever they lead. For over 15 years, the Ontario-based singersongwriter has given a voice to the joys and sorrows that make a life well lived. Through her tales of life and death, love and regret, and the past and future, her poignant sound resonates deeply with anyone that hears it. Known as a powerful and soulful live performer and outstanding writer and lyricist, Gryner continues to propel herself forward towards an ever-growing list of enviable accomplishments. Her latest album, Northern Gospel, serves as a collection of love letters to the majestic Canadian landscape in which Emm calls home.

BRENT BUTT
Saturday, February 9, 2013 7:30 pm Easily recognizable as the star of the smash hit TV series Corner Gas, Brent Butt became a household name through comic celebration of his humble, small town Saskatchewan roots. But this stardom for Brent didn’t happen overnight. Honing his comedy skills since an early age, Brent began like any other comedian, working the standup circuit. Between headlining top clubs, touring internationally and eventually securing television specials, Brent secured himself as one of the funniest people in the country. His efforts in creating Corner Gas earned him numerous accolades, including an International Emmy Award nomination, and the title of “Funniest Show on TV” as voted by TV Guide readers. For six seasons Corner Gas ruled the airwaves, and is still a hit in being aired as re-runs. While Brent continues to devote time to writing, executive producing and even directing, his original passion of stand-up will forever hold many untold achievements for one of Canada’s brightest stars.

Old Man Luedecke
Old Man Luedecke is one of Canada’s best loved and most intriguing roots singer-songwriters. His memorable melodies, poetic sense and charisma appeal to anyone searching for new growth from old roots. On his latest album, Tender Is The Night, his music moves beyond his beloved solo, banjo-driven folk tunes and is rounded out by a Nashville band from beginning to end tenderly pushing the boundaries of his storytelling. With skillful precision and a storyteller’s heart, Luedecke’s narrative-driven folk songs are playful, coy, and soul warming. Rich in metaphor, heart and instrumentation, Tender Is The Night muses on love, art and purpose.

“Beneath the sheer delight that spills from Luedecke’s upbeat banjo licks, lurks more of the songwriter’s superb lyricism, filled with vulnerability and vibrant language.” – Exclaim Magazine
