MAYOR

OF ST. ALBERT

It’s time to celebrate! For three decades, the Arden Theatre has provided our community with the gift of memorable artistic experiences. Talented artists from far and wide and even from our own backyard, have brought their passion for music, dance, theatre, comedy and film to our city to share with you, our friends and dedicated patrons. While we reflect on 30 years of cultivating vibrant cultural expression past and present and toast the Arden Theatre for the significant impact it has had in the city of St. Albert, we hope you do the same. What has been your unforgettable moment here at the Arden? I invite you to share your story with us during this 30th anniversary year. Without your dedicated support, we wouldn’t have such a milestone to celebrate. Thank you and enjoy this commemorative season.

PRESENTER Welcome to the 30thAnniversary season of the Arden! Before beginning my work here at the Arden Theatre, I was a long time patron of this venue, attending countless performances with my family throughout the majority of my life. The Arden is a vital part of the community of St. Albert, and the greater Edmonton region, and I know firsthand what kind of impact it has on the lives of its patrons, both young and old. I look forward to celebrating this milestone anniversary with you and hearing about your favourite memories from the past 30 years at the Arden.

message from the

Minister of Culture As Minister of Culture, it is my great pleasure to welcome everyone to the 30th anniversary season of the Arden Theatre. Another season at the Arden means another invitation to the people of St. Albert and the whole capital region to welcome, and to share, a world of great performance. How many lives have been touched by brilliance here, over thirty years? How many moments of enchantment have been shared, how many ordinary evenings have been turned into magic, how many artistic dreams have been given the push they needed to become reality? We cannot know for sure, but each of us in these seats cherishes the personal and collective treasure that has built up here over three decades, and promises to do so, we hope, for evermore. The Government of Alberta is pleased to help support the Arden Theatre through the Alberta Foundation for the Arts. My thanks to the City of St. Albert, the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society and especially the audience, for helping to build this cultural treasure. Whether this is your first time at the Arden or you have made your contribution throughout the past thirty years, you are an indispensable part of the magic.

Danse Lhasa Danse A co-production of PPS Danse and Coup de coeur de francophone Thursday, January 16

|

7:30 pm

Quebec’s PPS Danse merges dance, words, and music into one voice to embody the spirit and soul of the late musician and Canadian treasure, Lhasa de Sela. In this original tribute, seven dancers, four singers, and five instrumentalists come together to present a dazzling multi-disciplinary celebration of a singer-songwriter whose voice was silenced by cancer in 2010. Lhasa was a woman of great wisdom and spirituality, and her luminous, poetic music allowed listeners to celebrate life with confidence and without hesitation. Danse Lhasa Danse is a spectacle of impassioned elegance; a heartfelt homage that resonates with emotion.

“Ultimately a magnificent evening in which dance was able to show how it can convey what words or lyrics cannot express. A context that could not be more perfect for Lhasa, whose extra bit of soul that touched so many people around the world transcended her lyrics.” – DFDANSE

Quebec choreographer, dancer and director Pierre-Paul Savoie founded PPS Danse in 1989, and has since become renowned for creating multidisciplinary works that feature strong images and raise relevant issues. Openness, creativity, humanism, sharing and commitment are the forces that continue to drive the company’s activities. These values are manifest in the production of original choreographic works and in PPS Danse’s involvement in showcasing contemporary dance.

Bruce McCulloch YOUNG DRUNK PUNK Monday, January 27 | 7:30 pm Edmonton-born comedian, writer, director, and legendary member of Kids in the Hall, Bruce McCulloch brings stand-up, live music, and assorted autobiographical insights to St. Albert in his one-man show, Young Drunk Punk. Directed by Blake Brooker, Bruce McCulloch’s new solo show chronicles his journey from wild early days as a ‘young punk’ in 80’s Alberta, to his flannel plaid days and futon nights in 90s Toronto, to becoming a ‘pajama-clad dad’ living in the Hollywood Hills. From a scowling teenager to father of two, this evening of comedy, peppered with moments of surprising poignancy, proves that although this infamous ‘Kid’ may be all grown up, his singular brand of humour and signature wit remain firmly intact.

“A definitive image of McCulloch, at once the silliest and most cynical of the Kids, and that sensibility is reflected in his new solo show” – NOW Magazine

Bruce McCulloch has written or performed several one-man shows including Two-Headed Roommate, Jazz Stenographers, Slightly Bigger Cities and most recently, The Pink Dot Stories in San Francisco. He has two spoken word/comedy/music CDs, Shame-based Man and The Drunk Baby Project, and co-wrote, starred in, and was executive producer of the Kids in the Hall 2010 reunion project, Death Comes to Town. Bruce is also known as the creator of ABC’s Carpoolers and has appeared in episodes of Workaholics and Arrested Development. Please note: This performance contains adult content and coarse language.

Fatoumata Diawara Wednesday, January 29

|

7:30 pm

“The most beguiling talent to hit the world music scene in some time...” – The Telegraph

Born in Côte d’Ivoire, raised in Mali, now based in Paris, Fatoumata Diawara has had a life covering a gamut of contemporary African experiences. Having fought parental opposition to her artistic ambitions and the cultural prejudice faced by women throughout Africa, to ultimately earn success as an actress in film and theater, Fatoumata is now immersed in the medium she was always destined to make her own: music. Inspired by Wassoulou tradition, jazz, and blues, Fatoumata Diawara has created her own unique contemporary folk sound with a distinctly African spin. At the centre of it all is Diawara’s spellbinding voice, accompanied by rhythmic guitar playing, to create gorgeously melodic songs that draw powerfully on her own, often troubled past. Her debut album, Fatou, is almost entirely her own work, self-composed and arranged, with her own backing vocals and percussion. It breathes with the natural warmth, confidence, and spontaneity that are the essence of Diawara herself.

Little time or appetite to make the change

School site swap not very likely BY peter Boer Staff Writer A suggestion that could see St. Albert’s newest elementary school built in Kingswood instead of Erin Ridge North appears to be a non-starter. At Monday’s city council meeting Coun. Cam MacKay asked administration to explore an idea first put forward by council candidate Sheena Hughes – move the elementary school Cam announced by the maCkay province last month Councilor from Erin Ridge North to Kingswood, then move the francophone high school pegged for construction at Eldorado Drive to Erin Ridge North. Such a move, said Hughes, would address concerns of Erin Ridge sheena residents about the hughes size of the high school Candidate compared to the area of the school site, and worries about heavy vehicle traffic and parking at the Eldorado site. “I just tried to think of some kind of solution,” said Hughes. “It just occurred to me this is an alternative.” The city doesn’t have title to the site Hughes is suggesting it explore. The land in Kingswood has long been at the centre of an ongoing dispute between developer Canterra and the city. Canterra is supposed to hand the land over to the city but will only do so if the city guarantees a high school won’t be built on the site. President Murray Brown has been previously quoted as saying high school students don’t make good neighbours. The city has said it will not issue any development permits to Canterra until it hands over the land. This kind of swap could finally bring some peace to the ongoing dispute, Hughes said. See “School site,” page 4

WILD WEATHER – A large storm cloud passes over a field of canola northwest of St. Albert on Monday as a stretch of cold, rainy weather finally subsides, making way for hotter temperatures this week.

City reviewing flood plain maps BY peter Boer Staff Writer

The city will have another look at its flood plain data for the sake of caution but is confident little will need to change in the wake of the province’s policy change on housing development within flood areas. The province announced Sunday anyone who builds or rebuilds within identified 1:100 year flood plains in Alberta will not qualify for disaster relief in the event of a flood. The changes come on the heels of massive flooding last month in southern Alberta that has left many homes uninhabitable. Stephen Khan, St. Albert’s

MLA, confirmed Thursday that policy change is province wide, not just for those areas that recently flooded. “The premier is very clear that the policy is not just for the area in southern Alberta. It’s a policy for all of Alberta moving into the future,” Khan said. But city officials maintain the policy change should have very little impact on St. Albert. As the rules currently stand, building anything in St. Albert’s flood plain is forbidden. “It’s pretty clear in the land use bylaw that it is prohibited,” said Carol Bergum, the city’s senior long-range planner. It does allow for some structures such as util-

ity infrastructure or temporary outdoor shelters, but that’s about all, she added. Bergum said the city is looking at its flood plain mapping

and also reviewing maps in the province’s possession to make sure both are as up to date as possible. See “Flood plan,” page 4

ApRIL BARtLEtt/St. Albert Gazette

WATER WORRIES – The RiverHouse Restaurant and several other buildings in that area are described as below the flood line. The city says no other flood risk areas exist in St. Albert.

Gregory Alan Isakov Friday, January 31 & Saturday, February 1

|

7:30 pm

For more than a decade, singer-songwriter Josh Ritter has built a praised career on tender balladry and delivering deeper truths through his music. Once named one of the “100 Greatest Living Songwriters” by Paste Magazine, Josh Ritter has perfected his trademark heart-rending wordplay with the release of his newest album, The Beast In Its Tracks. Reflecting a personal journey, Ritter turns pain and anger into intimate songs that exude empathy, kindness, and optimism. In 2011, Ritter also made his debut as a published author with his New York Times best-selling novel, Bright’s Passage. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Gregory Alan Isakov has been traveling all his life. Songs that hone a masterful quality beyond his years tell a story of miles and landscapes, and the search for a sense of place. His song-craft lends to the deepest lyrical masterpieces, with hints of his influences, Leonard Cohen and Bruce Springsteen. His degree in horticulture might seem contradictory to a life spent in motion, but Isakov finds balance in the quiet concentration of the work, creating roots that keep him connected to home. His new album, The Weatherman, reflects the nature of his external surroundings as much as his inner experiences.

7:30 pm

The California Guitar Trio’s relentless passion for following its muse has served them well. The acoustic group’s fearless multi-genre explorations have driven 14 albums and nearly 1,500 gigs over their 22-year career. It has also proven that a zerocompromise musical approach can yield an ever-expanding audience. When it comes to bridging diverse genres of music, the Montreal Guitar Trio, which CBC described as “the hottest guitar ensemble in Canada,” has quickly established itself as a force to be reckoned with. For more than 13 years, the trio’s virtuosity, rigor, creativity, and dynamic stage presence have been winning applause around the world. When performing together, they become a “phenomensemble”, shattering stylistic expectations of what is possible when six guitarists share a stage. Through their artistic exploration of progressive rock, jazz, world music, and classical genres, they fuel a fearless fire of power and intensity that burns any boundary that limits the string instrument. They play arrangements of each other’s material, as well as innovative takes on rock standards by legendary groups like Queen, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and more. California Guitar Trio and Montreal Guitar Trio’s collaborations yielded the concert recording, +Live.

Spotlight on

H32 & H33

With the Arden Theatre’s recent renovations we launched the Take a Seat campaign, encouraging patrons to sponsor a seat, but with a twist. We also wanted to know why they chose specific seats. Everyone has their favourite seat, and we’re learning that every seat has a story. When Bryan and Linda Reed sponsored their regular seats, we were curious to find out what made H32 & H33 so special. As long time Edmonton Folk Festival goers, the Arden Theatre was known to them, but really not on their radar. As time went on they began to take note of the great programming the Arden offered, year after year. Finally they took in a performance, and were hooked. “We then fell in love with the Arden, both the staff and what they accomplish. The variety at the Arden has introduced us to many wonderful new experiences and has created many wonderful memories. When it came time to decide which seats we wanted, there was no doubt. We chose H32 and H33 specifically because they are easily accessible and have a great view of the entire stage.” - Bryan Reed What are YOU waiting for?
