WELCOME messages
Welcome to the Arden Theatre’s 2012-2013 season.
With the approach of Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017, our Government is pleased to celebrate all that makes Canada a remarkable country, including organizations like the Arden Theatre. For almost 30 years, this theatre has contributed to the cultural vitality of St. Albert and indeed Alberta as a whole, offering residents and visitors first-class performances designed to attract audiences of all ages and from all walks of life. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I want to congratulate everyone involved with the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
The Honourable James Moore Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages
O
n behalf of the Government of Alberta, I would like to welcome everyone to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season.
Located in the heart of downtown St. Albert, the Arden Theatre is the city’s cultural soul, connecting community members in all walks of life to the joy of artistic performance. In the theatre’s seats, people of all ages have been captivated by the music, drama, magic and fun of the theatre’s diverse programming. As well as hosting internationally acclaimed entertainers, the theatre’s stage has showcased school performances and dance competitions, giving local talent a taste of the limelight. Just as important, the theatre’s lobby echoes 29 years of laughs and spirited conversation between friends, family and community members. My thanks to the numerous staff members, volunteers and arts enthusiasts for their dedication to supporting and promoting the Arden Theatre as a cherished cultural hub in St. Albert. Without further ado, enjoy the performance!
The Honourable Heather Klimchuk Minister of Culture and Community Services MLA, Edmonton-Glenora

elcome to the Arden Theatre’s 29th performance season! I invite you to take flight with the Arden and cultivate inspiration through rich artistic offerings. With an engaging and diverse program of music, comedy, theatre, dance, and film, your imagination will be soaring to new heights. Whether it’s their first appearance on our stage – like the iconic Cowboy Junkies or comedian Brent Butt, or they are returning due to popular demand – like the delightful Lunch at Allen’s or well-loved Matt Andersen – I am confident that whatever your mood or preference, you’ll find something this season that will excite your senses. For our younger audiences, we have a wonderful selection of family programming that promises a fun-filled and educational ride for children through the wondrous world of silly science, the quintessential sounds of New Orleans, and a multimedia presentation where the stage becomes an artist’s studio. St. Albert Children’s Theatre also brings to the Arden stage an adaptation of the wildly popular novel and blockbuster movie Legally Blonde, The Musical. Thank you to the Friends of the Arden Theatre Society, the many dedicated volunteers and the Cultural Services staff, for your efforts, year after year, in uniting us all with rich artistic experiences. Thank you for your ongoing support of cultural expression in our community. Now please sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

CBC’s The Irrelevant Show Saturday, March 16, 2013 7:30 pm Back for its fourth season on CBC Radio One’s national airwaves, the hilarious cast of The Irrelevant Show brings you a buffet of award-winning comedy sketches and songs, recorded before a live audience. From the everyday to the surreal, typical sketches from the series delve humorously on popular culture; from scenes about family life to relationships, dating to the workplace, to all-out flights of imagination, The Irrelevant Show will leave you in absolute stitches.
“The live recordings are a fantastic experience. The actors are performing the sketches for a live audience for the first time; the crowd gets to see sound effects and music created right in front of them: suddenly the whole show comes to life right before your eyes. And the audience loves it when things go wrong — our cast is made up of very funny improvisers — often the between-sketch banter is a highlight of the night.” – Peter Brown Led by head writer Neil Grahn, the writing team includes members of the cast – Mark Meer, Donovan Workun, Jana O’Connor, Marianne Copithorne, and Leona Brausen – as well as writers from Edmonton’s rich comedy community, including Chris Craddock and Dana Anderson. At the final live show this season, musical guests Sheldon Elter and Ryan Parker from Edmonton cult band the Be Arthurs, and gifted actor/singer Jocelyn Ahlf accompanied by the legendary Jan Randall on piano, share the Arden stage with some of Edmonton’s funniest people. An award-winning program at the 2009 New York Festivals and a Canadian Comedy Award winner for Best Radio Clip, The Irrelevant Show offers something for every comedy taste. sponsored by

Ron Sexsmith
Wednesday, March 27, 2013 7:30 pm A songwriter with a rare depth of spirit and a matchless understanding of human nature, a Ron Sexsmith show is an intimately heartwarming affair not to be missed. With 13 albums to his name, this Juno award-winning artist has collected mountains of sweeping acclaim from critics and artists alike. Ron Sexsmith is, quite simply, a Canadian treasure. His latest release, Forever Endeavour, is invariably underpinned by an acceptance of life as it actually is, especially when the record pairs him again with the same producer who, for two decades, has framed his music in its most sympathetic surroundings. He sings here of the inevitability of regret, the fragility of life and love’s redeeming power in poetic, gently affecting songs that perfectly distil the pitfalls of being human.
“I really do think this is the record I’ve been trying to make my whole career... It really came together this time with the songs and the production and my voice, where I was singing the way I heard in my head.” – Ron Sexsmith

savoy family cajun band
Friday, April 5, 2013 7:30 pm When it comes to Cajun music, the Savoy Family Cajun Band are indisputable experts. Marc and Ann Savoy have been playing together since 1977 and with the addition of their two sons, Joel and Wilson, this family of gifted players revives old tunes, from dance hall favourites to sweet French ballads, with a salty Louisiana flair. Maintaining a more acoustic approach to this genre of music, the Savoy Family Cajun Band takes pride in drawing considerable power from four acoustic instruments.
“Musically, they sure ain’t no stuffy preservationists; whether a bitter lament or an earthy hard-driving breakdown, with Marc’s squeezebox, Ann’s guitar, and their highly capable sons Joel and Wilson on fiddle and keyboards, the Savoys cover the Cajun spectrum with a dazzling mixture of spiritual joy and virtuoso voltage.” – Los Angeles Times Apart from making spicy and soulful music together, Marc Savoy has received the National Heritage Fellowship Award; Ann has written a book on the genre – Cajun Music, A Reflection of a People; Wilson, as a member of the Grammy Award-winning Pine Leaf Boys, has also appeared on HBO’s “Treme” series; and Joel, before he created Valcour Records, was a founding member of the Red Stick Ramblers. But together, The Savoy Family Cajun Band brings the raw energy of southwest Louisiana to the stage, peppered with humorous and informative anecdotes about life in the Cajun heartland, making their live performances a true experience of life on the bayou. sponsored by

The year is 1955. Desperate to escape the chicory-pulling, stall-cleaning, hay-baling drudgery of Rural Route life in Ontario, Peggy Ann Douglas has a plan. Following in the footsteps of starlets Debbie Reynolds and Lee Meriwether, Peggy Ann will simply become a Hollywood star by first winning the local pageant. Her quest to the top meets firm opposition from her hard-edged father but is secretly supported by her nurturing mother. But since farm life doesn’t exactly instill grace, poise and charm, can Peggy Ann sing, twirl and pivot her way into the hearts of judges, or will shaky nerves and a “Puritanical Work Ethic” sabotage her efforts? Based on a true story and brimming with love, comedy, and a staggering work ethic of its own, Miss Caledonia is a delightful exploration of optimism and harsh realities down on the farm. Dora and Canadian Comedy Award winner Melody A. Johnson, along with the delightful accompaniment of Alison Porter on fiddle, will have you in the palm of her hand on her quest for the tiara in Miss Caledonia.

Cowboy Junkies
Friday & Saturday, April 19 & 20, 2013 7:30 pm Extraordinary then, extraordinary now. For over 25 years, Cowboy Junkies have remained true to their unique artistic vision and to the introspective, quiet intensity that is their musical signature. Their collection of lauded albums, including The Nomad Series (an ambitious four-volume release over an 18-month period), chronicles a creative journey reflecting the independent road the band has elected to travel. Such an artistic path, along with their distinct mix of blues, country, folk, rock and jazz, has endeared them to an audience unwavering in its loyalty. Cowboy Junkies were formed in Toronto in 1985 after guitarist and songwriter Michael Timmins and long-time friend and musical partner, bassist Alan Anton, recruited Michael’s sister, singer Margo Timmins and brother, drummer Peter Timmins to join them. Their latest effort, The Wilderness, is a poignant and gently disarming alt-rock album that shares that same sweet sense of melody and the same haunting voice that made The Trinity Session so remarkable. Cowboy Junkies returned to Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity for a single day in November 2006, where they were joined by Ryan Adams, Natalie Merchant and Vic Chesnutt to revisit the repertoire of The Trinity Session in celebration of its 20th anniversary. The resulting film, Trinity Session Revisited, released as a DVD/CD in January 2008.
