What a pleasure it is to be back at The Arden Theatre! I’d like to send a huge thanks to Neil LeGrandeur for doing such an excellent job programming a season that truly is Yours To Discover. Over the past year, I’ve made some discoveries of my own, many I never thought possible, as I embarked on an exciting new adventure – motherhood. However, one of my best discoveries was how much I missed the theatre and all of you! We have lots to catch up on and I can’t wait to hear about the artistic endeavours you’ve made over the past year and performances you’d like to see on our stage next season. Find me in the lobby or send an email to cnorth@stalbert.ca with your suggestions because The Arden Theatre is Yours to Discover. How close is freedom for four abducted children? By AnnA Borowiecki Staff Writer In a surprising turn of world events, Dr. Saren Mahmudi-Azer, an Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly kidnapping his four Canadian children last August has been detained by Iranian officials says his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a media conference in Ottawa Tuesday. She stated that the Iranian authorities, acting on Canada’s red Interpol notice, detained her ex-husband on June 12 in the province of West Azerbaijan. “He has appeared in Iranian courts, is currently out on bail with mobility restrictions, and will make another court appearance in the coming weeks,” Azer said. The St. Albert raised, Vancouver Island resident added her ex-husband is being monitored and is slated to appear before the courts in Urmina, Iran. Before he allegedly abducted the children, Saren Azer was a widely respected physician on Vancouver Island with a gold-plated career. See “Azer,” page 5

Kenney’s bid to unite right gets reaction By DoUG neUMAn Staff Writer Former federal cabinet minister Jason Kenney’s plan to seek the Progressive Conservative leadership and unite the right has prompted mixed reactions across the province and in the St. Albert area. Many who hold conservative views welcome Kenney’s announcement, delivered Wednesday in Calgary, but there are indications he may not receive such a warm reception from the PC party he hopes to lead into a merger. ACADIAN | FOLK

Thursday, November 9 | 7:30 PM | $36 Vishtèn brings its signature style of upbeat, modern Celtic-Acadian

music to The Arden Theatre stage. The francophone trio is comprised of twin sisters Emmanuelle and Pastelle LeBlanc from Prince Edward Island’s Evangeline region and Pascal Miousse from Québec’s Magdalen Islands. All three grew up surrounded by music, dance and old-time kitchen parties. Together they have been polishing their musical style for over a decade, re-invigorating traditional songs from both cultures and creating new compositions laced with rock and folk influences. They also have prolific careers as solo artists and composers. To create their original sound, they draw on an impressive instrumental repertoire, playing fiddle, guitar, piano, accordion, mandolin and jaw harp with ease. The fast-paced, intricate footwork of Acadian step-dancing adds percussion to the mix; its lively rhythms will surely be a memorable highlight of the show. Vishtèn has recorded five award-winning albums and performed at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. The group has shared its unique high-energy music to great acclaim on tour in Canada and abroad. 2016 was an outstanding year for the band. They earned four Music PEI Awards, including Acadian/Francophone Artist of the Year, and four East Coast Music Awards, including Roots/Traditional Group Recording of the Year.

“These young francophone musicians have impregnated their traditional repertoire with all the richness of their heritage that distinguishes the character of the east coast on this continent.”

jadea kelly Psweet alibi FOLK | POP

Friday, November 10 | 7:30 PM | $32

Two of Canada’s most compelling female acts combine forces for a thrilling

double bill of atmospheric folk arrangements and soulful harmonies. Ontario-born Jadea Kelly wows audiences with her honest lyrics, expressive melodies and lush voice. Her sound is a blend of musical styles from roots to rock. Kelly won 2016 Contemporary Singer of the Year from the Canadian Folk Music Awards. She has toured North America and Europe and had one of her songs featured in a CBC Television montage tribute to Terry Fox during the Rio 2016 Paralympics. Rounding out the evening is Winnipeg-based Sweet Alibi. Since forming in 2009, the talented trinity of Jess Rae Ayre, Amber Rose and Michelle Anderson has shared energetic roots-style musings and soaring folk-inspired vocals with audiences across North America. Setting the framework for their sound, Ayre and Rose share lead vocals. Ayre brings a slow sultry sound, while Rose delivers a more pure and traditional vibe; together they sing open, heartfelt songs lifted by Anderson’s balanced lilting harmonies. In 2014, the band was selected Roots Group of the Year by the Western Canadian Music Awards. Their album Walking in the Dark was featured on CBC Radio 2’s Top 20 for seven consecutive weeks.

“If you can imagine Patsy Cline writing songs with Feist, you kind of have an idea of where Jadea Kelly resides within the musical spectrum.” – The Pop Stereo USA “If Mumford and Sons and the Supremes had a love child it would be named Sweet Alibi.” – CBC Radio 2

William pRince FOLK | ROOTS

William Prince considers himself a storyteller as much as a musician, provoking listeners to think and discover. His country, gospel and folk rhythms resonate with the lyrical poignancy and authenticity of everyday living. He connects with audiences through rich tunes underscored with raw emotion. Lean acoustics and warm slide-guitar complement his compelling baritone voice that echoes Johnny Cash and Leonard Cohen — and his father, Ed Prince, who was an acclaimed gospel musician in Manitoba. As a child, William Prince was introduced to music through his father’s career and the DJ service his parents operated. Ed taught him how to play guitar and sing and instilled the importance of perfecting his craft. Prince has dedicated his energy to that refinement since he began writing and performing his own music at age 13. In 2016, Prince won a Western Canadian Music Award for Aboriginal Artist of the Year. In 2017, he garnered a Juno Award for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year. The album, which took ten years to perfect, has a soulful resonance that is inspired by his personal experiences. Its title track, “Earthly Days,” tells the story of his deep relationship with his wife and the privilege he feels in spending his life with her.

“[Prince’s] voice and songs evoke Leonard Cohen, Willie Nelson, and more than a dash of Barry White.” 16

CHRISTMAS

Friday, December 8 | 7:30 PM | $35 Enjoy the sounds of the season as the beloved Ennis Sisters bring a musical Christmas collage to The Arden Theatre for your family to enjoy. This East Coast folk act mixes original songs, holiday classics and festive recitations into a fresh celebration of the season that’s sure to kindle your holiday spirit. Growing up in an Irish home in Newfoundland, Maureen, Karen and Teresa were surrounded by traditional music as they listened to their father play button accordion. That Celtic heritage can be heard in the melodies the sisters play, many of which incorporate traditional instruments such as the tin whistle and bodhran drum. From early on, the trio’s talents were clear; their 1997 debut album, Red is the Rose, won Folk Album of the Year from the Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. Since then, The Ennis Sisters have explored styles such as folk, country and pop. No matter the genre, the siblings’ music is built on a foundation of honeyed harmonies accentuated by strong voices that add clarity and power.

“World renowned and celebrated songwriters.”

michael bernard fitzgerald FOLK | POP

Friday, December 15 | 7:30 PM | $34

In 2011, Michael Bernard Fitzgerald was awarded the Emerging Artist

prize at the Alberta Music Awards. In 2016, he was nominated as BreakOut Artist of the Year by the Western Canadian Music Awards. If you listen to his music, it’s easy to hear why. With his big-heart, big-sound blend of acoustic, funk, soul and pop, this Calgarian has proven himself a musical wonder. His natural charisma allows him to effortlessly connect to fans with joyful energy. In the early days of his career, Fitzgerald’s independent spirit led him to create his music at home, recording songs and making DIY copies to sell. As he became more experienced, he moved away from performing only cover songs and began writing his own. Fitzgerald’s most recent record, I Wanna Make It with You, was released in 2016. Its ballads are filled with honest intimacy, and its upbeat songs are reminiscent of the music of 80s and 90s legends like Bryan Adams and Bruce Springsteen. These days, Fitzgerald’s performances are increasingly known as grand affairs, sometimes with dozens of other musicians and dancers joining him on stage, including Steve Winwood, Third Eye Blind, Sam Roberts and a recent pairing with the Calgary Philharmonic.

“An incredible songwriter with a powerful presence everyone should discover.” – CBC Music/Sonica 24
