Message From The
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Welcome to A Christmas Carol! It’s our 20th anniversary of A Christmas Carol, and we’re celebrating with a brand new adaptation, written by Edmonton’s own David van Belle, and starring St. Albertborn Ted Dykstra as Scrooge! We’re so glad you have joined us for this magical new production of the story you know and love, filled with music (a live band!) and beautiful new sets and costumes. Over my three years as Artistic Director of the Citadel, I have been delighted to meet so many Edmontonians who consider our production of A Christmas Carol an important part of their family holiday tradition. To me, that’s what theatre is all about – the joy of bringing people together, young and old, to celebrate and share.
The Citadel’s production of A Christmas Carol has affected the lives of so many people, both in the audience and on the stage. Over the years, countless children have had an opportunity to experience their first acting experience in this production. Many of the young performers have gone on to flourishing careers as professional actors. For instance, this very sweet photo of a very young Cynthia Jimenez-Hicks and Braydon Dowler-Coltman, who were both in the children’s chorus of the production in 2003. Now, over 15 years later, Cynthia and Braydon are both professional actors and have returned to the production to play Belle and Young Ebenezer! My immense thanks to the incredible work of the hundreds (and I mean hundreds) of actors, designers, craftspeople, technicians and stage managers who have lovingly brought this new production together. And to David van Belle for crafting such a beautiful adaptation of this timeless story. I am so proud to be a part of it all and so excited to share it with you. Thanks so much for making the Citadel a part of your holiday celebrations, we’re so glad you’re here! Merry Christmas!
Daryl Cloran, Artistic Director

PLAYWRIGHT’S Notes
Charles Dickens is often referred to as “the man who invented Christmas.” His iconic novella A Christmas Carol is associated with a Victorian renaissance of attention to what had previously been a somewhat minor holiday in Great Britain. If you walk into a Christmas ornament store, many of the designs evoke snow-covered gingerbread-y houses from Dickens’ 1840s, with women in bonnets and petticoats and men in top hats singing earnest carols. A Christmas Carol has a huge part in our city’s holiday life too—for the past 20 years Edmontonians have returned to hear Scrooge’s tale of redemption told over and over again. It’s a responsibility I don’t take lightly. When Artistic Director Daryl Cloran and I began envisioning a new version for the Citadel, we knew that we needed to invite audiences into a world that had the same warmth and nostalgia that has kept them coming back year after year. At the same time, we wanted to create a setting that would reflect where Edmonton has gone in the past 20 years, and explore how our understanding of ourselves has changed in that time. In our discussions, we found an opportunity for these discoveries in a new setting, one that’s also closely associated with Christmas, due to a beautiful collection of Christmas songs and classic Christmas movies—that of the late 1940s and early 1950s. These Christmas cultural icons responded to a world that was healing from family separation, profound loss, and war—a perfect setting for a story of redemption. It’s an overwhelming honour to have been asked to write this work, and an even greater privilege to create it with an enormous team of exceptionally talented artists of all kinds. I hope it brings you light during a dark time of the year. Have yourself a merry little Christmas, and may God bless us, every one. – David van Belle

COST OF LIVING MARTYNA MAJOK’S COST OF LIVING began as a monologue in 2015. It expanded to a one-act and then to a full play and premiered Off-Broadway in 2017. The next year it won a Pulitzer Prize for drama. Cost of Living struck a chord with audiences and with critics. It also smashed to bits a number of longheld theatre fantasies. Cost of Living begins on the Citadel Mainstage on January 11th and will run through February 2nd.

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean Majok (Ma-yok) had long written about people who experience disability and those nameless, faceless characters who exist mostly in background shadows. In her works, she has taken the marginalized and given them centre-stage. Cost of Living also says a lot about audiences. For too long those with disability were regarded as “others” by assumed able-bodied audience, media and the theatre industry. It made audiences uncomfortable to see visibly disabled bodies onstage: “Frailty is a walking reminder of our mortality and when someone looks at a disabled body on stage they are thinking about the fallibility of their own bodies – and death,” says Majok in a recent interview. Turned out that Cost of Living is part of a cultural wave that has demonstrated that able-bodied audiences were ready to accept the humanity of those they saw as less than or disadvantaged. Cole Sibus, who has down syndrome, plays a major supporting role in the new television series Stumptown, Peter Dinklage, an actor with a common form of dwarfism has become something of a matinee idol on Game of Thrones and Michael J. Fox has continued his distinguished acting career with advancing and noticeable Parkinson’s Disease. Up until Cost of Living and other productions that have contributed to the disabled actors being on stage, disabled characters tended to be played by able-bodied actors: Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot, Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything. (Both won Oscars for their portrayals.) The movies generally had those with disabilities inevitably overcoming their diagnoses and “winning the marathon” or they were long-suffering saints rather than real people with complex, whole personalities and motivations beyond being as able-bodied as possible.

COST OF LIVING In an interview with Foreshadowing, Christopher Imbrosciano, who plays one of the four leads in the Citadel production of Cost of Living and has cerebral palsy, told us recently, “We’ve reached a point now that we can show what we really are and audiences are definitely ready for it. The change is amazing. Producers and directors are realizing that we have stories that have to be told just as anyone else’s does, and the disadvantaged need to be seen on stage telling them.” Imbrosciano has long since learned to live functionally with his disability. “I think my CP has enhanced both my capacity for compassion and empathy as an actor. When I started there were a lot of people in the theatre who didn’t know how to deal with it. But all that has changed. I’ve had a really successful career and, sure, part of that is because I have cerebral palsy but nowadays, roles are coming at me because of the way I act. And that’s pretty cool.” The actor certainly has an impressive career going for him. Besides his long association with Cost of Living (he was the understudy in the original Off-Broadway production), he played the lead in England in My Left Foot – The Musical, appeared on Broadway in an Agatha Christie thriller, in regional theatre in The Cripple of Inishmaan and was featured on the television series, The Good Wife (among many others).

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean Cost of Living tells of two relationships. John (Imbrosciano) is studying for his PhD. He is rich, entitled and has a chip on his shoulder. John has Cerebral Palsy, a condition categorized by impaired muscle coordination that can affect, balance, speech, motor-skills, nervous system functioning and sometimes cognitive abilities. People are diagnosed with CP as children and it is not degenerative. He employs a caregiver for daily tasks such as bathing, dressing and shaving. John hires Jess (Bahareh Yaraghi), a rootless caregiver who is working in bars. The two abrasive personalities chip away at each other. After a traffic accident, the angry and acid tongued Ani (Teal Sherer – the actor is paraplegic) is now quadriplegic – all four of her limbs are paralysed. She is cared for by her unemployed ex-husband, Eddie (Ashley Wright), who is trying to get back in with her. Who better to lift, feed, and wash her than the man who already knows her so intimately? Jess and Eddie are able-bodied characters but they are navigating their own challenges in life. Cost of Living focuses as much on the caregivers as it does on John and Ani. Majok artfully shows how these four people are bound together by mutual need. Majok only considered performers living with disability for her play. “It was an experiment for me,” remembers the playwright. “Cost of Living begins with just a woman standing on the stage but when John entered in a wheelchair on opening night everybody went so quiet. You could see they felt nervous. Was I about to make fun of a disabled character? Or were they nervous at just the image of a disabled actor on stage? ‘Oh God’, I thought, ‘my play

COST OF LIVING is going to tank.’” Besides the Pulitzer for it’s “diverse perceptions of privilege and human connection through two pairs of mismatched individuals,” it has racked up a wall-filling number of other awards. The playwright needn’t have worried. In talkbacks about the show, audiences have expressed surprise at just how funny it is. Says the playwright, “They were expecting a certain kind of story. I tend to write a lot of plays about very serious issues but I’ve learned to front-load them with humour. People just assume it’s going to be a super serious story so I’ve learned to train audiences early on that they can and should laugh. The characters that are ‘the other’ are the ones that control the humour – and driving it – and I want audiences to connect with that person. Many people assume pity for them and that was one thought I didn’t want to present. People will say, ‘Oh you poor thing...’ or ‘That must be so hard...’ They are assuming that they are suffering daily every minute and thinking about their disability. I wanted audiences to understand that there is much more to their lives than that. Sexuality was also important. I wanted to have sexy scenes and to have a person take agency with their own sexuality and pleasure.”

FORESHADOWING with Colin MacLean EXPLORES THE PRIVILEGES OF THOSE WHO ARE “THE PLAYABLE BODIED BUT AT THE SAME TIME
IT LOOKS AT PRIVILEGE THROUGH THE EYES OF SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS.
”
Majok maintains the running theme in Cost of Living is about people isolated by disability and/or poverty. Critics have noted the beauty of the play resides in the tenderness when guards are momentarily let down. That thought is echoed by director Ashlie Corcoran, who last directed the Citadel’s production of Mamma Mia. This Canadian Premiere is a co-production of the Citadel and the Vancouver Arts Club which Corcoran also directed – she is also Artistic Director of the company. She told a local newspaper there, “The play explores the privileges of those who are able bodied but at the same time it looks at privilege through the eyes of socioeconomic status. As John says, ‘I can do anything I want, except for the things I can’t,’ and I think you could say that for all the characters.” While observing the precepts of the original, Corcoran has put her own stamp on the production – much to the satisfaction of Imbrosciano. He has been with the play since shortly after its inception and is proud to have worked on its development. “Ashlie has been wonderful,” he enthuses. “She runs the most comfortable rehearsal room I’ve ever been lucky enough to be part of. It has allowed us to go as deeply as possible into the play.” It seems to have worked. To paraphrase the comments of a number of reviewers, “The actors dig deeply into their characters displaying a ferocious pride as much as the anguish of their characters” and “You don’t have to look far to see yourself on that stage.” The two stories run parallel and the four characters never meet.
