HENRY HOLE, 1884 - 1954 On the Citadel’s 30th Anniversary, a gift was made by the Company of Harry Hole, James F. Hole, Ralph K. Hole and Robert W. Hole on behalf of the Hole family — in honour of their late father, Henry Hole. STUDENTS CLUB We are thrilled to welcome back our 1000 Students Club Members as they prepare to enjoy the final show of the Citadel Theatre Season. The Maclab Enterprises Students Club is a Citadel Theatre/Robbins Academy program that offers a unique glimpse into the world of professional theatre to a wide range of junior and senior high school students from Edmonton and surrounding areas. n the first three Tuesdays and Wednesdays of our season’s productions, Students Club O members gather to enjoy a small reception before the show and then participate in a highly engaging, interactive presentation/demonstration involving one of the Citadel’s talented theatre artists. Following the performance, students are invited to stay for a lively talkback session with members of the production’s cast and crew. Prior to seeing Make Mine Love, the Students Club will be joined by their host Patrick Lundeen and special guest, the multi-talented artist, Tim Mikula. Tim is a senior player for Rapid Fire Theatre, performing in and hosting weekly shows and workshops at the Citadel Theatre. In addition to being a writer, visual artist, voice actor, and stand-up comedian, he is also the curator of Dr.Jokes, a bi-weekly alternative comedy show in Old Strathcona. Students will get the Tim Mikula chance to learn about Edmonton’s comedy community, and strategies to write their own stand up comedy. Patrick and Tim will also provide a plethora of information on possible arts activities and events that can be pursued by the students over the summer. We have loved having the students join us this year, and look forward to the 2014/2015 season. about the
playwright TOM WOOD Tom Wood is an accomplished playwright, actor, director, and teacher and has worked with every major theatre in Canada and a number in the United States. Mr. Wood has spent seven years with the Stratford Festival and five with the Shaw Festival. For the theatre he has written B-Movie, The play (five Dora Mavor Moore awards and the Chalmers Award for Best New Play) and Clap Trap, a farce, produced at Canadian Stage in Toronto and the National Arts Center in Ottawa. He has also adapted A Christmas Carol (2014/15 will be its 15th season at the Citadel), Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers, a new version of Servant of Two Masters (set in the Klondike), a new version of Uncle Vanya (set in Alberta in 1928), and a new version of Peter Pan (set on the prairies during the depression). His production of Vanya debuted in America, starring William Hurt at the Artists Repertory Theatre for an extended run and rave reviews. Mr. Wood’s latest new comedy, Make Mine Love, is about movie-making in Hollywood circa 1938 and this is its World Premiere. Earlier this season he played James Tyrone in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and he has also played Willy Loman in Death of A Salesman (Sterling Award nomination), and John in Shining City (Sterling Award). His directing credits at the Citadel include Romeo and Juliet, Doubt, a parable, The Glass Menagerie and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

about the MUSIC
Many artists contributed to help create the musical background to the world of Make Mine Love. Five original songs (including the song Make Mine Love) written by Lynn Miles and Keith Glass, form the basis of the score. Composer and Arranger Allen Cole used melodies and themes from those five songs to create the musical world of the play. Orchestrator Ben Christenson then added the instrumentation to create the final product. Throughout the play you will hear various orchestrations of these songs just as you would in the score of the films from the Golden Age of Hollywood. Lynn Miles is one of Canada’s most accomplished singer/ songwriters with ten albums to her credit. She is the winner of multiple Canadian Folk Music Awards, and a 2003 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Solo Album of the Year.
Keith Glass is a founding member, guitarist, and songwriter with Prairie Oyster, and has received critical acclaim, including multiple Juno and CCMA awards.

“There is a lot of comedy in our season this year,” muses Bob Baker looking over the Citadel line-up for the 2014/15 season. Well, that’s heartening because, if you look at the track record, the Citadel excels at comedy – from outrageous (Monty Python’s Spamalot) to sophisticated (Private Lives). It’s been a good year for the playhouse. After a couple of years where the faltering economy had a depressing effect on ticket sales, and with the help of last year’s powerhouse lineup, attendance has climbed quite satisfyingly. “It appears we are out of the bubble at last,” says Baker happily, pointing to a number of shows (Mary Poppins/2 Pianos 4 Hands/A Christmas Carol) that sailed past expectations. The Club, in the old Rice Theatre, is beginning to move. Performers love its redesigned, intimate space and most everything that has played there has attracted large audiences. Down the hall in the Zeidler Theatre those veteran improvisors, Rapid Fire Theatre, have established a growing audience. They became part of the Citadel family two years ago and Baker admits to some reservations. “Initially we wondered if the southside, university crowd that was attracted to improv companies would come downtown. Well, they did. There are lineups of young people to get into the Citadel Theatre and you can see the interest growing.” The 2014/15 season begins with a winning Canadian family drama with the unprepossessing title of Kim’s Convenience. The play sprang from the pen of Ins Choi, a Korean-Canadian actor. As you may have noticed, there is a remarkable dearth of Canadian plays featuring actors of Korean ancestry so he wrote his own. Kim’s Convenience was a hit at the Toronto Fringe and then ran, twice, at Toronto’s Soulpepper Theatre. Since then it’s been produced all over the country and may even be on its way to becoming a television series. It’s a tale as familiar and universal as, say, an Alberta rancher who works a lifetime to make something for his kids – and none of them are interested in raising beef. It’s a serious story told with a light

touch. Kim’s Convenience opens the season on the Main Stage with Previews starting on September 20th. The British smash One Man, Two Guvnors may be the most hysterical import from Old Blighty since Ricky Gervais. It has driven even the often sour British critics (and subsequently critics in New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Australia etc. etc.) into hysterics looking for words to adequately describe this modern adaptation of an 18th century Goldoni farce, A Servant of Two Masters. The convoluted plot can not be properly outlined here – suffice to say it’s about a rascal who is employed by two criminals – one a gangster and the other an upper-class racketeer. If he wants to stay alive, he must keep one master from knowing about the other. This comic gem will also feature live music performed by our own popular ukulele band, The Be Arthurs. Note the date: October 25. The Citadel will turn the heat up in January with Venus in Fur, an intelligent and sexy two-hander. This is another play that started Off-Broadway, and went on to huge acclaim and, last year, was the most produced play in North America. Venus in Fur is a hot little number that features a director lamenting the inadequacies of actors who are applying for a complex role. At the end of a long day an actor, described as “crude, compliant and desperate,” arrives for a reading. Not only is she what he is looking for – she sets in motion an unspoken, but subtly ever-shifting, power battle between the two. “It’s smart. It’s subversive. It’s adventurous and bold,” says Baker.

The relationship between Jonathan Christenson’s Catalyst Theatre and the Citadel has been mutually rewarding. A couple of years ago, Baker commissioned Christenson (who writes the words and music – and also directs) to mount a show for the Citadel. Dipping back into the Gothic canon that so intrigues him, Christenson came up with Hunchback, based on the Victor Hugo novel. The two hoped that combining the Citadel’s formidable development apparatus and Christenson’s stylized flair for the dramatic would result in something quite unique. The result was a grand critical and box office triumph. “The numbers were huge,” enthuses Baker. “We operated at 96 percent capacity for the run.” For this go-round Christenson abandons his beloved gothic tales for a uniquely Canadian one – the story of the Black Donnellys who were massacred by a still unknown posse in Middlesex County in Ontario in 1880. The story is complex, dark and a perfect fit for the two companies. The world premiere of Vigilante opens in the Maclab Theatre in March. Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia is this year’s offering from the Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program. Previous works include Pride and Prejudice, The Three Musketeers and Romeo and Juliet, and since it is to be directed by Tom Wood, that is a sure sign Arcadia will continue to burnish the project’s distinguished reputation. The play is a curious hybrid. It’s a comedy and a mystery. A review in the New York Times noted that it was about “the

Imagine Jim Henson’s lovable sock puppets taking on such issues as homosexuality, marriage, racism, love – and the inability of the overeducated to find a job. Avenue Q opened Off-Broadway in 2003 and received glowing reviews. It then moved to Broadway, England, Las Vegas and continued its naughty ways to theatre stages all over the world. And when the idea began to seem a bit weary – circumstances caught up with it all over again and its themes are as relevant as they were over a decade ago.

The season next year also includes a number of what are called add-ons – which are not part of the mainstage season. As he promised last year during his astonishing 7 week run with his Daisy Theatre, master puppeteer Ronnie Burkett will be back in The Club. Ronnie is a master improv artist and very funny fellow. After taking on such subjects as AIDS, the Holocaust and the end of the world, Ronnie has taken to staging a puppet cabaret which offers some serious views of the modern world – as well as inspired (and often raunchy) nonsensical ones. October in The Club. Theo Fleury was a little guy from Oxbow, Saskatchewan who, against all odds, went on to forge a long and turbulent career in the NHL. He also battled a drug addiction that finally ended his career. In 2009, he co-wrote a biography called Playing With Fire which became a best seller. The book also exposed the sexual abuse he suffered at the hands of one of his coaches. Fleury (and co-writer Kirstie McLellan Day) spun that off into a very successful one-man show featuring Calgary actor Shaun Smythe. Director Ron Jenkins put Smythe on skates – real skates – for the whole show and used some kind of plastic surface that completely apes the properties of real ice – right down to the spray of snow when the performer brakes to a stop. The show reaches far beyond Jenkins’ remarkable production techniques to dramatically capture the life of one of our most colourful citizens. Raoul Bhaneja is one of Canada’s busiest actors. He’s appeared on stages, in movies and on many television shows. He also is an extraordinary blues guitar picker and singer. He’s bringing his new show Life, Death and the Blues, which he bills as a “theatre/ concert hybrid” to The Club in February. He’ll be joined by blues legend Divine Brown and some of the best bluesmen in Canada.

bios REBECCA NORTHAN Lily Arlen
Previously at the Citadel, Rebecca appeared in and created Blind Date, which also played in New York and London. Rebecca’s most recent creation, Legend Has It, played to packed houses at Alberta Theatre Project’s playRites Festival this spring. Next season she will appear in One Man, Two Guvnors (Theatre Calgary), as well as Morris Panych’s new play, Sextet (Tarragon Theatre, Toronto). She has received two Canadian Comedy Awards (Blind Date), as well as being the recipient of a Just For Laughs Comedy Award (improv), and a Betty Mitchell Award (Blind Date). Rebecca has also been nominated for a Gemini, two Sterling Awards, and several Dora Awards. Her film/TV credits include: guest-hosting This Hour Has 22 Minutes (CBC), starring in The Foundation (Showcase), and Alice, I Think (CTV). She can also be seen in the feature films Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, The Rocker, and the upcoming What If. Violet Madsen, Dee Kupp, Dale Dover, Montana Montez Previously at the Citadel, Lisa was seen in Long Day’s Journey Into Night, and last season’s The Penelopiad. She has played stages across Canada, including The Arts Club (Vancouver), Theatre Calgary, The Globe (Regina), Manitoba Theatre Centre, Theatre Aquarius (Hamilton), Odyssey Theatre (Ottawa) and Thousand Islands Playhouse; and throughout the U.S. on tour with Roseneath Theatre. At home base in Toronto she’s appeared at, among others, Canadian Stage, Factory, The Tarragon, Theatre Columbus and Mirvish Productions. Lisa premiered new work at the Blyth Festival for three seasons and was a member of the Shaw Festival acting company for five, performing in eleven shows including Picnic, Widowers’ Houses, Hay Fever, and Man and Superman. Her TV appearances include Murdoch Mysteries; Fringe; Rookie Blue; Magic Beyond Words: The JK Rowling Story; and the role of Edith in Bomb Girls, and her voice can be heard in numerous ads and cartoons including The Doozers; The Mysteries of Alfred Hedgehog; Willa’s Wild Life; Detentionnaire and the very silly new Teletoon/Nickelodeon series Rocket Monkeys. Enid Crotts, Mavis Greenbalm, Maimie Graham Jana O’Connor is delighted to be making her Citadel debut in this wonderful show! Jana is an Edmonton actor, improvisor, playwright and teaching artist. She is also a cast member and writer on CBC Radio’s hit sketch comedy program, The Irrelevant Show. In 2010, Jana was the recipient of a Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Arts Award for her work as an emerging playwright. Her first play, The Lonely Hearts, made its debut at the Edmonton Fringe last year, and is shortlisted for the 2014 Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award for Drama. This summer, Jana will be appearing with her beloved Teatro la Quindicina in Lucy and Mr. Plate at the Varscona Theatre, a play she is co-writing with Jeff Haslam and Stewart Lemoine. Jana dedicates this performance to her very loving and supportive family – mom, dad, Laura, her husband Chris, and their daughter, Olive!

Chester Dobbs, Ramon Guzman, Andy Dandy, Tony Mezzeo Farren is an actor, director and writer. Last season at the Citadel, Farren appeared in Monty Python’s Spamalot for which he won a Sterling Award. Also at the Citadel, he directed the Young Company’s production of Pippin and acted in A Giraffe in Paris. Other acting credits include The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Western Canada Theatre); Waiting for Godot (Wishbone); Marvelous Pilgrims, The Scent of Compulsion, and A Rocky Night for His Nibs (Teatro La Quindicina); Early Bloomer (Concrete); Assassins (Studio Theatre); and Little Shop of Horrors (Mayfield). Farren’s directing credits include The Light in the Piazza (Grant MacEwan University); Aladdin, Sleeping Beauty, Pinocchio, Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood (each of which he also co-wrote) (Alberta Opera); The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story (Mayfield); The Infinite Shiver and Everybody Goes to Mitzi’s (for which he also wrote the lyrics) (Teatro La Quindicina); and The Be Arthurs: Reunion Tour (Edmonton Fringe). Farren is the Artistic Director of Alberta Opera and an Artistic Associate for Teatro La Quindicina. Farren resides here in Edmonton with celebrated actress, Patricia Zentilli, and their incredible three year-old son, Leonardo.

He has appeared in memorable Citadel productions such as Death of a Salesman, The Rocky Horror Show, Billy Bishop Goes to War, Beauty and the Beast, Sweeney Todd, A Christmas Carol, The Drowsy Chaperone (coproduction with the National Arts Centre), The Wizard of Oz, Doubt, a parable, Cabaret, The Pillowman, I Am My Own Wife, Stones in His Pockets and The Mystery of Irma Vep. Recently, John was in Deathtrap (Mayfield) and A Midsummer Night’s Dream and King Lear (Freewill). John is a founding member of Firefly Theatre – Edmonton’s unique circus theatre, with whom he created and performed in Craniatrium, Duck Duck Bang and Primordial Blues. He is also a notable street artist whose works include The Human Fountain which was at the World Cup Daidogei festival in Shizuoka, Japan this year.

Since returning to his hometown of Edmonton fourteen years ago, Bob Baker as Artistic Director has rejuvenated and expanded the Citadel Theatre. Programming season after season of world-class theatrical productions, Mr. Baker has ushered in an era of growth at the Citadel. Four years ago Mr. Baker was instrumental in incorporating four of the Citadel’s existing creative development programs under one umbrella: The Robbins Academy. The Robbins Academy consists of the Eldon and Anne Foote Theatre School, the Citadel Young Companies, The Citadel/Banff Centre Professional Theatre Program and ongoing Play Development activities, creating Canada’s newest and most comprehensive program for creative development in professional theatre. Mr. Baker was honoured with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal for exceptional service, excellence and community involvement, a University of Alberta Distinguished Alumni Award, is a member of Edmonton’s Cultural Hall of Fame and is a recipient of a PACE award from Alberta Association of Colleges and Technical Institutes. Last season Bob directed Monty Python’s Spamalot which received six Sterling Awards, including Outstanding Director and Outstanding Musical Production. He was the Artistic Director during the successful turn-around of both the Phoenix Theatre in Edmonton (1982-87) and the Canadian Stage Company in Toronto (1990-98). Earlier this season, Mr. Baker directed his 50th show at the Citadel, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, as well as the 14th annual production of A Christmas Carol.

bios BRETTA GERECKE Set and Lighting Designer
Bretta grew up in Winnipeg and has lived in Edmonton for the past nineteen years. She graduated from the U of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Interior Design in 1992, and from the U of Alberta with a Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Design in 1996. Bretta is the resident designer at Catalyst Theatre, where she has designed shows which have toured to the UK, Australia, the U.S. and across Canada. She also works at Canadian Stage, The National Arts Centre, Edmonton Opera, Calgary Opera, Theatre Calgary, The Banff Centre, Trinity Laban Conservatoire and The Globe Theatre. She is the recipient of over twenty Sterling Awards, Jessie Richardson Awards, SATA, and Betty Mitchell Awards; The Enbridge Award for Best Emerging Artist; The Global Women of Vision Award; and Edmonton’s Top 40 Under 40.
CORY SINCENNES Costume Designer
Earlier this season, Cory designed the Set for Disney’s Mary Poppins and Set and Costumes for Romeo and Juliet. Cory’s Citadel credits include Monty Python’s Spamalot (Sterling Award), Next to Normal (Sterling Award), The Rocky Horror Show and Little Women: The Broadway Musical. Other theatre credits include Where the Blood Mixes for Theatre Aquarius/WCT; Chicago and Boeing Boeing for Mayfield Dinner Theatre; Mump and Smoot for ATP; Julius Caesar and The Tempest, Freewill Shakespeare Festival; Bigshot for Surreal Soreal/Ghost River and Communion and Woman in Black for Theatre Network. Cory holds a degree in Architectural Studies from Carleton University and a MFA in Theatre Design from U of A. He is a member of Associated Designers of Canada.

Last season, Owen was sound designer for Next to Normal. Other Citadel credits include sound design for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, August: Osage County, Billy Bishop Goes to War, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Wizard of Oz and The Forbidden Phoenix; sound consultant on Three Mo’ Tenors and assistant sound designer for Fire. Selected operation credits include Beauty and the Beast, Guys and Dolls, Westside Story (co-production with Theatre Calgary), Vimy, Noises Off, Peter Pan, 3 Mo’ Divas, The Mystery of Irma Vep, The Sound of Music, Christmas Carol, and The Shape of Things all for the Citadel. Other highlights include Chicago for Troika Entertainment and Cinderella for St. Albert Children’s Theatre. Owen was born and raised here in Edmonton, and studied Theatre Production at Grant MacEwan.
ALLEN COLE Composer/Arranger
Originally from Nova Scotia, Allen Cole has worked as composer, musical director, lyricist and/or book writer on musical theatre works such as The Wrong Son (NAC ), Mimi (with Rick Roberts and Melody Johnson), Anything That Moves (with Ann-Marie MacDonald and Alisa Palmer), and Pélagie (NAC and CanStage). Pélagie toured the Maritimes and Québec in 2005 with a bilingual production presented by Two Planks and a Passion Theatre Company. Allen has composed music for many theatre companies, including the Shaw Festival, Stratford Festival and Soulpepper. He has won numerous awards, including four Doras, and a Best Film Score Award from the Atlantic Film Festival. His musical Rockbound won five Merritt Awards in Nova Scotia, including Best New Play, Best Music and Best Production. Rockbound was published by Scirocco Press and was nominated for the Lieutenant-Governor of Nova Scotia’s Masterworks Award. His funk musical comedy, The Bricklin (co-written with Paul Ledoux), premiered in Fredericton, New Brunswick in July, 2010, and played in Katowice, Poland in 2013. Allen currently teaches musical theatre at Ryerson. He was also Artistic Director of the Caravan Farm Theatre in Armstrong, B.C. from 1996 – 1999.

bios JORDAN DOWLER-COLTMAN Projection Co-Designer and Filmmaker
Jordan is thrilled to be returning to the Citadel after many years. His professional career began as a member of the youth company in several shows, including A Christmas Carol and Peter Pan. He received his BFA in Film at Emily Carr University in Vancouver where he specialized in 3D film. In 2010, Jordan co-founded Skyward Motion Pictures and has directed two feature films Algorithms (2010) and Silhouette (2011) and most recently Canada’s first underwater 3D short film, The Depths (2013). Make Mine Love has been a dream project for Jordan and he would like to thank Victoria School of the Arts, FAVA, Oliver Millar, and his amazing team: Stirling Bancroft - Cinematographer, Craig Anderl - Camera Operator, Justin Brunelle - Key Grip/Gaffer and Larisse Campbell - Production Manager/AD (to whom he would like to dedicate this show). Projection Co-Designer and Animator Owen is honoured to be part of this exciting new show at the Citadel. Owen has been part of the Make Mine Love adventure since the initial “what if” conversations with the design team in 2011. Owen is the Executive Director of Guru Digital Arts College where he is surrounded by brilliant and talented students and faculty. Owen would like to acknowledge the efforts of Jasmine Abbey (illustration/graphic design), Naomi Brierley (motion graphics/photo retouching), Cody Schiebelbein (3D modelling), and Heiko Ryll (videography) in creating the digital side of this show. As a projection designer, Owen melds video, animation, illustration and game technologies into a cohesive part of the overall design of the show. Projection design is a new direction for the Citadel and Owen would like to thank Bob, Tom, Bretta, Cheryl, Bill, and Jordan for their patience and perseverance with our journey of discovery. Lastly, Owen is the luckiest guy on the planet to have the love and support of his wife, Pam, and daughters Molly and Naomi.

bios BEN CHRISTENSON Orchestrator
At three years of age, Benny C sat down at the piano for the first time and has been hooked ever since. In 2003 Ben moved to Iowa to study with vocal jazz arranger Phil Mattson at the School for Music Vocations, and had the opportunity to perform twice at Carnegie Hall with VoicesIowa. After graduating, Ben worked for Celebrity Cruises as a showband musician and bandmaster. After four and a half years and fifty countries, Ben returned to Alberta for the next leg of the journey. Though composition has always been important, studying orchestration really fostered Ben’s love for symphonic and film music. That has led to an advanced computer setup for orchestral mock-ups which Ben uses to produce music for various artists. Orchestration unexpectedly opened the door for musical theatre as well. Since 2011, Ben has performed on Wicked, The Sound of Music, Jersey Boys, Spamalot, and recently Mary Poppins. He also works as a youth and young adult pastor in Wetaskiwin. Ben is thrilled to be a part of Make Mine Love.

Here we are, the final show of our 48th Season and what a fantastic way to bring this wonderful season to a close! A World Premiere and made-in-Edmonton original, Make Mine Love was developed at the Citadel, written, directed, designed and with a majority of performances by Edmontonians. We are proud to bring you this new work and thank BMO Financial Group for supporting Play Development at the Citadel. On behalf of all of us at the Citadel Theatre, we would like to Thank You – our patrons, premier supporters, donors, funders, corporate and media sponsors, for your incredible contribution to this season and for your loyalty and commitment. We witnessed on our stages family dysfunction, piano prodigies, a flying nanny, marionettes, race and real estate, isolation in a connected world, love, death, and Christmas. Whether you are a long-time supporter or have walked through our doors for the very first time, we hope that you found this season’s mix of plays to be entertaining, thought-provoking and truly memorable! We hope that you’ll join us for our 2014/15 Season. The Club at The Citadel has become a favourite for both audiences and artists. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, and BOARD PRESIDENT We are thrilled to report on the continued evolution of the Robbins Academy, where we train professional artists to a higher level, mentor and prepare young adults for a career in the arts, and introduce children of all ages to the magic of theatre. We thank Bill and Mary Jo Robbins for their on-going commitment to this important work and for incenting others to join in supporting us. We would also like to acknowledge the Eldon and Anne Foote Fund and the John and Barbara Poole Family Fund for their visionary support of the creative development of artists and youth at the Citadel over the years. Thank you to all three levels of government for their continued support of the arts in our community. The Citadel contributes to the vibrancy of the downtown Arts District and the social fabric of our city by providing a complex that not only houses our productions, but also provides space and service to many arts and community partners like Rapid Fire Theatre, The Canadian Country Music Awards, The University of Alberta Festival of Ideas, and many more. Again, we cannot thank you enough for your unfailing support.
