We are nearing the end of another hockey season in Edmonton and our attention as the Hockey Edmonton board now turns to the 201617 season. First of all, I would like to thank all the volunteers and supporters of hockey in Edmonton. Our organization works with over 8,500 athletes. The number of volunteer hours needed to make this happen is staggering. Over 6,400 games have been played this past season, coach clinics held, endless number of meetings, fundraisers, Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week, three sessions of Bauer’s First Shift and the list goes on. All this could not have been done without our volunteers and Hockey Edmonton staff. This past year, we saw the new bylaws come into play as well as the operating directives for community hockey. We signed formal agreements with our interlock partners, developed a constitution for the Federation Hockey League and recruited some very skilled and capable individuals to the board. Hockey isn’t just a game; it has many life lessons attached to it. Many of our athletes have learned the hard lesson of good sportsmanship and in life there’s winning and there’s losing. It’s what we take away from that moment that builds our character and how we deal with adversity as we move forward in life. We’ve seen teams giving back to the community, from the Stollery Family Day Classic to cancer fundraising to working at the food bank. You’ve made us all proud as you displayed great citizenship and what it means to be an Edmontonian. We experienced a good example of determination through a story that appeared in our very own Hockey Edmonton Magazine one issue ago. The story of Alex McFarlane gave us a grounding experience when he shared how he worked at McDonalds and saved up enough money to pay for hockey registration and how he took the LRT, bus or rode his bike to his games and practices. His story was an inspiration for all of us; it also displayed the true spirit of our hockey family as they surrounded this young man with support. Moving forward, 2016-17 will see some change with enhanced program development, streamlined elite operating directives and guidelines for community hockey when it comes to tryouts and forming teams. I often remember a famous quote, “Change is the only constant.” As an organization we need to change and adapt to new landscapes within hockey. We need to search for newer and deeper partnerships that will benefit not only the game but the athletes and coaches of Hockey Edmonton. We have to adapt in order to meet the needs of our athletes, grow the game and allow more young people to participate. Over the past three years we have seen a decline in the number of skilled players who can participate at the elite hockey level; we need to create more opportunities in skill and athletic development. This needs to start at our initiation program and work itself up through all categories for all players. We ask the parents to get involved, share your talents, whether it is on or off the ice, you’re always more than welcome. So while we are in the final few games of the season we would like to wish everyone the best of luck in the 2016 Enmax Hockey Edmonton City Championships. Parents, enjoy this time with your young men and women. You will be surprised how fast the years will fly by and you’ll be attending their final midget or junior game. To all the players graduating from minor hockey, your years of minor hockey will be in the rearview mirror but ahead of you, we hope you hold on to the Hockey Edmonton mantra “Hockey for Life.”
We wish you all continued success in your future! Sincerely,
Mark Doram

Welcome to our final edition of Hockey Edmonton Magazine for the 2015-2016 season. This is our Yearbook Edition of the magazine, which features the gold medal winning teams from 2016 Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. Additionally, we have included a number of “spotlights” on players who won gold medals during this event. And in the centerfold, we have included a montage of photos taken during Quikcard Edmonton Minor Hockey Week. Thanks to Ian Jackson and the great group of photographers at Epic Photography for supplying these photos. One of the mainstays in our magazine is the “Spotlight on an Official” feature, where we interview a young minor hockey official. For this edition, we met up with 15-year-old Spencer Acheson, who has been officiating minor hockey for two seasons. We’ve been doing this feature for over 12 years, and it never ceases to amaze me the confidence and composure level exhibited by these young officials. Wrapping up this final edition of the magazine, we have an article on “Pride” hockey tape. The tape is a nod to LGBTQ youth – both an invitation for them to play hockey, and an invitation to hockey teams to have the discussion about acceptance and inclusiveness. We got wind of this initiative in early January, and since this time, it has exploded, with the Edmonton Oilers being the first NHL team to use this tape, and at their Skills Competition which took place in mid-January. That’s all for this issue. With the hockey season winding down, we would like to wish all the participants a great off-season, and look forward to seeing everyone back on the ice in a few short months!

Calgary resident Harnarayan Singh is living a dream. He still cannot believe how fortunate he is to be able to broadcast Hockey Night in Canada in Punjabi, the third most spoken language in Canada. The native of Brooks, Alberta, who now calls Calgary home, is in his ninth season on television. Currently on OMNI, Singh and his broadcasting team of Harpreet Pandher, Taqdeer Thindal, Randip Janda, Gurpreet Sian and Bhupinder Hundal cover back-to-back National Hockey League games every Saturday night, and then exclusive coverage of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA
PUNJABI-BROADCAST
UNITES THE GENERATIONS
[By Jeremy Freeborn / Photos provided by Harnarayan Singh]
T
The interest in watching hockey
amongst the Punjabispeaking communities in Canada is significant. Last season, the Punjabi broadcasts were made available to 20.4 million Canadians. The broadcasts can now also be seen on pristine high definition television, just like the English-speaking broadcasts on Hockey Night in Canada. Singh grew up a fan of the Edmonton Oilers. He was the youngest child in his family and learned about hockey from his older siblings, who had great passion for hockey and idolized Wayne Gretzky. Singh was also interested in the broad-casting element of the game, regularly studying the broadcasters. Singh would do
his own play-by-play broadcasts of the games as he watched, frequently annoying his parents, who would be trying to listen to the games. Singh was also fascinated with the statistics side of hockey. He came by his interest in numbers naturally, as his father has his doctorate in mathematics. “During class, I would be memorizing hockey jersey numbers when I should have been paying more attention to my teachers. I had a Hockey News subscription from a young age, and I was constantly filling my brain with information. My dad was constantly worrying what I was going to do with all of this information about hockey. There came a day when, lo and behold, it paid off.
13
Singh began his broadcasting career during high school. He covered local high school sports at the Brooks radio station. From there he got accepted into the broadcasting program at Mount Royal College, and in his second year was selected for an internship at TSN Sportscentre in Toronto. In 2004, Singh returned to Calgary and worked for the CBC, initially as a reporter. Then prior to the 2008 Stanley Cup final, Singh received a phone call from CBC executives in Toronto. They asked him if he would be interested in broadcasting Hockey Night in Canada in Punjabi. “I could not believe it. I didn’t know whether to take it seriously or not. I never thought it was possible. I was always told Hockey Night in Canada is the cream of the crop. Everybody in the sports industry wants to be part of Hockey Night in Canada. CBC was trying to do something unique and multicultural. I don’t think they initially had any idea how big this would become. Initially our broadcast team received significant media attention throughout India, Europe and Canada.” Then two weeks before the start of the 2008-09 NHL regular season, Singh received a phone call from CBC executives, who were pleased with the ratings of the 2008 Stanley Cup final, and asked Singh to be available every Saturday night to broadcast a doubleheader in Punjabi. “This was unbelievable. I then said thank you, Mom and Dad, for teaching me a second language because without that I would not have this dream. It has been a phenomenal and amazing ride.” Other attempts by sports executives to broadcast Hockey Night in Canada in languages such as Cantonese, Mandarin and Portuguese, have not been as successful as the broadcasts in Punjabi. In fact it is now easier today for many Calgarians to watch NHL games in Punjabi than French because OMNI is more accessible for local television viewers than TVA Sports, which currently has the French-speaking NHL rights. Singh believes India’s strong showing in men’s field hockey, having won a record eight gold medals in the Olympics, results in greater attention among the Punjabispeaking culture compared to many other Canadian cultures. “I think part of it has to do with the strong Indian interest in field hockey. There’s a strong connection to field hockey so it is easier for them to understand the game.
14
We also live in a community that is vibrant and loud. We love our food and music. I think our community loves to get involved in things that are Canadian and I think hockey is so popular here, they became engrossed with it.” Even though the level of interest in hockey is high amongst the Punjabi-speaking population in Canada, there have not been a lot of players in the NHL, who are of Punjabi descent. The first player of Punjabi descent who made it to the NHL was Robin Bawa, who played for the Washington Capitals, Vancouver Canucks, San Jose Sharks and Anaheim Mighty Ducks from 1990-1994. Bawa was followed by NHL veteran Manny Malhotra, whose father is from Pakistan. It should also be mentioned that Edmonton Oilers prospect Jujhar Khaira is of Indian origin. In order to connect with his Punjabi-speaking audience, Singh has created a few interesting phrases that combine the Punjabi and English languages. They include “mareya shot-keetha goal,” which means “he shoots, he scores” and “chaparre shot” which means “slap shot.” Other terms that Singh has created include “dharvaja bandh,” which means “shuts the door” (used by Singh when a goaltender makes a huge save), “saja dha daba,” which means “the box of punishment” (used by Singh when he is referring to the penalty box) and “seetee maarkay balauna hat ja,” which is a line in a famous Punjabi song which is translated into “stop whistling at me.” Singh uses this term when players show dissatisfaction when they are called for too many penalties. Also, when a team is dominating their opponent, Singh suggests that the team must have drank a lot of Chai Tea, the most popular beverage amongst the Punjabi-speaking population. Singh also tries to relate to his audience by showing excitement, passion and entertainment
in his play-by-play. When a player scores, it is common for him to get as excited as a South American broadcaster does when broadcasting soccer.
Singh’s latest accomplishment was winning the 2014 Canadian Ethnic Media Association Excellence in Television Award. Singh received the award at a gala in Toronto.
For the last four seasons the broadcasts have been sponsored by Chevrolet. With Chevrolet as a primary sponsor, Singh has been able to concentrate on his hockey broadcasts and make it his full-time career.
Singh would like all Canadians to know that Punjabi-speaking Canadians are just as Canadian as everybody else, and that Punjabi-speaking Canadians love Canada. Hockey, according to Singh, is “a universal language that brings Canadians together.” In the future, Singh would like to broadcast more hockey games in Punjabi during the season, and also to broadcast Hockey Night in Canada in English.
Singh also tells me a story of how generations of Punjabispeaking families are uniting around the television set to watch his broadcasts every Saturday night. “A most rewarding experience was when I met a grand-mother from Toronto. She had a walker and was dressed in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey over her traditional Punjabi dress. She was over 90 years old, and told me that she had nothing in common with her grand-children because of the cultural gap. Since the broadcasts, she can understand hockey and spends every Saturday night with her grandchildren. We are hearing stories that our broadcasts are the only thing that brings families together. I did not know that our show would have this type of an impact.” Hockey has also been a large part of Singh’s personal life. His wife, Sukhjeet, is a huge fan of the Calgary Flames. Harnarayan and Sukhjeet were married at the hockey arena at the Acadia Recreation Complex in southeast Calgary in 2011. They had a Stanley Cup shaped wedding cake, had their wedding guests wear hockey jerseys, and had their wedding photos taken at the Scotiabank Saddledome with Kelly Hrudey! Hrudey has become a friend and mentor for Singh. According to Singh, Hrudey was one of the people to recommend to CBC executives to have a Punjabispeaking Hockey Night in Canada broadcast, and suggested Singh be the play-by-play announcer. Hrudey has helped Singh with preparation tips for the broadcasts.
Congratulations to players, coaches & parents for a great season LINDA DUNCAN MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT EDMONTON-STRATHCONA www.LindaDuncanMP.ca LindaDuncanMP 780-495-8404

UGLY FEET
How to Deal with Bunions,
Blisters and Heel Spurs
Written by Steffany Hanlen and Patrick Francey | Proskate When it comes to feet, at Proskate we have seen it all. And lets be frank, feet not only come in all sizes, they come in all shapes too! Fitting tens of thousands of feet over the years has given us the up close and personal view of some pretty interesting issues. Bunions, heel spurs, and size differences are just some of the challenges our fitting team deals with in making certain players get the best fitting skates. When skates don’t fit properly, the foot moves inside the boot causing friction, which results in, at best, some minor discomfort. But at its worst, can lead to blisters, heel spurs and skating performance issues. Our skate fit and performance team have learned over many seasons to assess a skater’s foot before recommending a brand and starting a fit. The process of fitting a foot and aligning a blade takes time and expertise. ‘High performance is a result of low tolerances’…the better your skate fits, the better your skating performance. Our goal is to maximize your ability. Fitting around pain or a challenging shaped foot is always done with comfort and performance in mind….no compromises. From a ‘skate fit for performance’ point of view, it is crucial to consider the unique shape of a skater’s foot. Once a bunion or a heel spur develops, skaters tend to panic. Sometimes the pain gets so bad it affects your game. We recommend that you do NOT deal with this on your own. Come in as soon as possible to either store or even better, send us a
photo from your phone in advance and we can assess potential course of action and be prepared for when you arrive. Since we are not medical professionals, we do our best to recommend a solution that is skate fit related but sometimes players wait too long before dealing with it. The last thing we want is to see you in is pain, or worse, getting surgery! The wrong way to deal with bunions or heel spurs is to purchase your next pair of skates a size too big! Don’t make this mistake! This solution may seem to make sense to the layperson, attempting not to put additional pressure on the affected area - but the true course of action is the exact opposite. What our professionals understand when it comes to bone types of issues is skates need to fit properly secure, even more carefully, possibly tighter than what would be considered normal so as not to cause extra movement. If there is any rubbing, heel lifting or any side-to-side movement within the skate the affected area tends to get worse. Each person has a different foot shape, width, arch depth height and toe length. Understanding the differences in peoples feet and performance goals and having over 30 years of experience allows us to make some bold statements when it comes to putting our clients in the correct boot.
16
Our commitment is to your comfort and performance. Although it may not be considered an exact science, the Proskate fitting team have it figured out!

Hockey Edmonton Magazine takes a look at the league’s top players, past and present, to see who really steps up their game when it counts the most. [ An Article By Rob Suggitt ]
W
When the playoffs start
, everyone talks about how players need to step up their game. This happens at all levels, and it definitely happens in the NHL. So which players really do step up their game in the playoffs? We took a look at two categories of players: retired players and active players. In the category of retired players, we included the top 15 playoff points leaders of all time and added in a few other players (i.e. Gordie Howe, Phil Esposito, Guy Lafleur) for good measure. It’s important to note that not only does the level of play become more intense in the playoffs, but the level of competition is higher, so for a player to keep his points production rate in the playoffs is quite an accomplishment. There are no weak teams who make the playoffs after all. Which makes it even more incredible for any players who perform (statistically) at 90 per cent or higher of their regular season production. And for those players who find a way to increase their productivity when it comes to playoff time, it is even more amazing. Standing out on top (and by a large margin) is former Oiler Mark Messier, who dramatically showed increased productivity in the playoffs. (Probably a big reason why he has six Stanley Cup rings, more than any other player who has played in the NHL since the Oilers joined the NHL in the 1979-1980 season.) Former Calgary Flames player Doug Gilmour sits in a solid second place, and there is a large group who reside in the category of unchanged productivity. (I would suggest plus or minus five per cent is close to unchanged in terms of productivity difference.) At the other end of the spectrum, it’s a bit surprising to see four-time Stanley Cup champion Brian Trottier at the bottom of the chart with his Hall of Fame teammate Mike Bossy not too far behind. Steve Yzerman is another Hall of Famer who saw a dramatic decrease in points productivity going from the regular season to the playoffs, but he did lead the Detroit Red Wings to three Stanley Cup Championships, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1998. For Yzerman, Trottier, and a few other players at the bottom of this chart, some of these players changed their game in the playoffs, so this partly explains their “dips.”
18
But this is also true of a few players who sit at the top of the chart. Mark Messier and Doug Gilmour did not allow their defensive game to suffer in the playoffs, but they still found a way to improve on their offensive output. A player (not on this list) who was revered for his playoff prowess is Claude Lemieux, not a point-generating giant in the regular season, but a good regular season performer. Lemieux averaged .65 points per game in the regular season, but true to his “legend,” his performance jumped up three percentage points when it got to playoff time. With 80 playoff goals, Lemieux ranks ninth all time in the NHL, and tied for third (with Joe Sakic) for game-winning goals in the playoffs. Lemieux was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1995, helping the New Jersey Devils win their first Stanley Cup. Lemieux also won cups in 1986, 1996 and 2000. Another big playoff performer is former Oiler, and current hockey analyst with Rogers Sportsnet, Craig Simpson, who dramatically increased his points production in the playoffs. Simpson averaged .78 PPG in the regular season over his career, but in the playoffs, Simpson performed at over a point-per-game pace, gathering 68 points in 67 games in 13 playoff series. Simpson scored the most goals (16) in the 1990 playoffs, and tied Mark Messier for most points (31) that playoff year. With 31 points in 22 playoff games, Simpson averaged an incredible 1.40 points per game. It was enough to help the Oilers win their fifth Stanley Cup in seven seasons, but not enough to win the Conn Smythe Trophy. The award for the most valuable player in the playoffs went to Oilers goalie Bill Ranford, who had a 16-6 winning record in the 1990 playoffs, which was the last time the Oilers won the cup. If it’s any consolation to Oilers fans, there are 16 other NHL teams without a cup in the same span of time. For current NHL players, we took the top 12 active players with the most accumulated points the past 10 seasons, and compared their points per game during the regular season to their PPG in the playoffs. Sitting on top are Blackhawks teammates Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, who performed at almost the exact same pace as their regular season production. This may explain why the Hawks have won three Stanley Cups in the past five NHL seasons.
It’s a bit surprising to see Sidney Crosby perform at “only” 87 per cent of his regular season production, but maybe this is apropos for a player with jersey #87. But still, no one comes close to matching Crosby’s production in the playoffs (1.18 points per game), and only teammate Evgeni Malkin performs at over a point per game in the playoffs amongst current NHL players.

[ The top half of the players have won a combined 48 Stanley Cups, while the bottom half have won 31 Cups. ]
In fact, there are only a handful of players (Malkin, Ovechkin and Jagr) whose regular season points per game percentage come close to matching what Crosby has achieved in the post season. There are a couple of players (not on the list) who have been shown to increase their points production in the playoffs, but the sampling size is somewhat small. Claude Giroux has only played 57 playoff games, but with 61 points in the post-season, Giroux’s average of 1.07 PPG well eclipses his regular season points production average of .90 PPG. Giroux has not won a cup, but came close in 2010 when the Flyers lost out to the Blackhawks in six games. Ryan Getzlaf has averaged .95 PPG in the regular season, and in 67 post-season games, he averaged .97 PPG. Getzlaf tallied an incredible 32 points in 21 games (1.52 points per game) in helping the Anaheim Ducks win the Stanley Cup in 2007. So who will stand out for their playoff performance production in the next 10 years? For the Oilers, will it be Hall, Eberle, NugentHopkins or Connor McDavid? Or maybe Yakupov? Or all five players? They have to make the playoffs first, but with this collection of young talent, it’s only a matter of time.

How to make the > > >
> > PERFECT PASS
Now that you can see your target, or teammate, make sure your pass is to where they’re going to be, not where they already are. The best way to get that timing down is to get out on the ice and practice with a friend. Try adjusting the power of your passes at different distances, so you know exactly how to hit your target in stride.
Hockey always has, and always will be, a team game. To ensure you become a great team player, you need your teammates to get the puck, and there’s no easier way to do that than a crisp, hard pass. This article will help anyone improve their passing, no matter what skill level they’re at. “The image below shows a young player improving his passing all by himself! Because he is using the Extreme Passer Pro from HockeyShot.com he is able to work on his skills without the help of a teammate. This piece of equipment lets anyone practice their passing on, or off the ice, or even in the comfort of their own home.” Here are three steps to follow to improve your assist:
STEP 1 Keep it on the Ice We all know how awesome a saucer pass looks, or a big alley-oop down the middle leading to a breakaway, but the reality is, almost all passes use the surface of the ice to reach their intended target. A common problem for everyone, especially beginners, is keeping those passes on the ice. The solution is simple: Roll baby roll! Rolling your wrists over in a forward motion as you pass causes the blade to stay flat on the ice, and the puck to stay level. This means your pass doesn’t end up in the stands, or worse, the other team’s stick. As long as you roll your wrists, the blade will close each time, and your Extreme Passer Pro will project the puck back to you. Keeping your blade cupped throughout the pass is another easy way to ensure the puck stays flat and on-target. If the blade is open, or wedged, the puck can easily bounce up off the ice. The cupping technique makes sure your blade is always at the perfect angle to send the perfect pass.
STEP 2 Keep it Accurate One of the most repeated rules for any hockey player to remember, is to keep your head up! Not only will this help you avoid any hits, but it allows you to see the ice, and therefore see where you need to pass. It’s way easier to pass to a target you can see than to just hope for the best.
You can also use the angle of your blade to help with your accuracy. Try experimenting with cupping and opening up your blade to send the puck in different directions. Sometimes the smallest adjustment can mean a huge improvement in accuracy.
STEP 3
Keep it Powerful!
Remember that no matter the distance, your pass should always be powerful. This gives it a much better chance of reaching its target before being picked off by the other team. Combine your accuracy techniques with short, strong movements in the wrist to get your pass to where it needs to go in a hurry. Simply snapping your wrists forward in that rolling motion we talked about earlier goes a long way in getting your pass to stay on the ice with speed. If your passes need to go further, or if you’re having trouble getting the zip you want, try leaning into your pass with a wrist-shot motion, only to snap it at the very end. Remember, a strong pass comes from a lot more than just the muscles in your arms and legs. Your blade needs to be cupped, your wrists need to be rolling forward, and that puck needs to stay on the ice! Combining these three steps will go a long way in improving your passing. Make sure to get out on the ice and find someone to practice with, because almost all your passes will be to someone in movement. When you can’t get out on the ice and just want to practice at home or by yourself, using the Extreme Passer Pro is a great way to get all your pass techniques down!

SPOTLIGHT
ON AN OFFICIAL SPENCER ACHESON
In the 15 years of publishing Hockey Edmonton Magazine, the “Spotlight on an Official” feature has been a mainstay. One of the reasons we do this feature is so we can take the helmet off our young subjects (figuratively and literally), so people can see that the officials are young participants in the game, and in many ways, no different than the kids who play the game. I’m always amazed (but no longer surprised) to see the level of confidence and composure (and humility) expressed by these kids, your officials, and this issue’s featured official is no exception. Spencer Acheson is 15 years old, and in his second year as a minor hockey official. We caught up with Spencer, just before he was set to go on ice for an atom game in late January. Spencer took the time to answer a few questions about being a minor hockey official and why he enjoys this role.
[ Photos provided by SC Parker Photography ]
SA Yes, it is actually fun. I don’t do it for the money part.
I really enjoy it, and it keeps me involved in the game of hockey.
Hockey Edmonton When did you start officiating
HE What level of hockey are you currently officiating?
Spencer Acheson I started to officiate when I was 14 years old and I was in Grade 9. This had been my second year as an official and I want to continue to officiate for a long time.
SA I officiate lots of different levels of hockey, typically novice
hockey?
HE Do you remember your first game as a minor hockey official? SA Yeah, I was super nervous. I was afraid to get criticized
-I wasn’t quite sure of my abilities (yet). By the end of the game, everything was fine. It wasn’t that big a deal after all.
HE What other sports or activities do you participate in? SA I enjoy playing volleyball at school with my school team. I play badminton with my brother often during the summer. I play baseball during the spring, and like to snowboard during the winter season.
HE What are your other hobbies and interests? SA I like to read occasionally during my free time as well as
play video games. I also participate in the concert band and jazz band at school were I play the baritone and the trombone.
HE What made you want to become a hockey official? SA My dad was an official when he was my age and
would always tell me stories about when he officiated and how much fun he would have. That made me interested in trying it out for myself, as well as wanting to stay involved in hockey and keep getting exercise by skating three or four times a week.
HE You mentioned the word “fun.” Is it actually fun
being a minor hockey official? 24
and atom. But this year I am starting to move towards lower level peewee and bantam games, as well as learning to do bantam as a linesman.
HE Have you ever officiated during Minor Hockey Week, and if so, what makes you volunteer your time? SA Yes, I did some minor hockey games last year and lots
of games this year, including two Minor Hockey Week final games this year and last year. The thing I enjoy most about volunteering my time is making sure that the kids enjoy playing. On top of that I can use those volunteer hours on job applications. Another great thing is that when you officiate more Minor Hockey Week games you in return will receive more regular season games to officiate.
HE What do you enjoy most about officiating hockey games? What kind of training were/are you provided? SA I really enjoy staying involved in hockey as I no longer play. I also like making sure that the games stay safe and that the kids have fun.
HE I understand your dad (Kevin Acheson) officiated at a high level, including the WHL, international hockey (2002 Winter Olympics), and he’s currently assistant director, officiating for the WHL. What tips from his experience have been helpful to you? SA My dad has been a huge help in making me a better official by giving me lots of great tips and pointers for getting better. Although I think the best piece of advice he has given me is
teaching me how to be a better communicator on the ice, because I think that one of the main reasons some kids are scared to officiate is because they are scared that coaches may take advantage of them on the ice, so being a good communicator on the ice is very useful.
HE Was your dad a big influence on your decision to become a hockey official? SA He no longer officiates but he does work for the WHL as an
officiating boss so I get to go to lots of the WHL games with him. I would watch the officials and start to learn lots about hockey. I would always notice penalties on the ice and my dad would tell me that I would be a great official, so that is one influential reason for me starting to officiate.
HE Did you go out and watch him in action, and if so, what observations did you make? SA I never watched my dad officiate because I was too young,
but I made tons of observations by watching the WHL officials and listening to the advice that they were being given after the game.
HE How have you improved your skills as an official? SA I have taken great strides as an official since my first few
games. My judgment and basic knowledge have improved a lot and I have become a very skilled official.
HE What’s it like to be 15-years-old and dealing with
coaches who are much older than you?
SA I was surprised when I started, and so was my Dad. I thought
I would be a little scared to talk to a coach and then I noticed I was actually pretty good at communicating with the coaches, just by letting them know what I saw on the ice, and why I made (or did not make) a call. Most of the time, they are happy when I explain my decision and that I take the time to speak with them.
HE How do you handle criticism on the ice? SA I make sure that the coaches understand why I made the
call I did and I explain to them my thought process. One other thing that I will do is establish a small friendship by knowing the names of the head coaches before the game starts so that they know that I am going to be serious about my job. Another very
important thing that I always do is after a call I have made that a coach thinks is questionable I explain to that coach that I will always be equal on both sides when calling penalties.
HE Any future aspirations – would you want to do this for a living? SA It would be great to do this at a professional level.
It would be lots of fun, but I don’t know yet. Let’s see how it goes, and how I feel in a couple of years.
HE One final question. Do you have comments you wish to share with parents, coaches or anyone watching minor hockey? SA I would say that to any parent, grandparent, kid, or anyone
else watching a minor hockey game whenever you think that any of the officials have made a close call or a bad call, before you think about criticizing them remember that they are still just kids and are still learning. We are all going to make mistakes at some point and are doing our best. So maybe just take a minute to think about what you are going to say before you say it.
