It aims to sort out the ambiguous scenario of the present architecture style with various innovative ideas and practices. The friendly environment and constantly supporting culture help newbies to overcome design problems and seek out new innovative ideas from each other. Also with the aim of maintaining ethical norms and standards for the best interest of the client, it covers a wide range of activities including architecture, estimation, contract documentation, construction supervision, landscape, and urban design.

Architecture (AFA) is one of the most recognized and well-known architecture firms in Nepal. It is one of the best emerging young firms with the stance of creating a threshold in Nepali architecture firms in global architecture.

AFA values ideas over identity and style over substance. It believes in creating a change while respecting the culture and identity of our own. AFA has been involved in various local, and national projects as well as in international design competitions and made it to the finalists as well as secured a Top 3 position. The environment inside AFA is more like a design studio rather than a typical office environment which totally stands out from most of the design firms in Nepal.

But there are some setbacks. The problem of light and ventilation always questions an underground settlement. To solve this problem, Periscopes are provided on different areas which act as a medium for traveling of light and air. The other problem is fire. In case of some fire hazard, shooting pods are installed which shoot individuals high up on the air. These individuals fall on the ground safely with the help of parachutes.

ne hour studio is a design concept-generating exercise where we were provided an hour to comprehend out-of-the-box ideas.

We are living in a time where land is being invaded gradually by human beings. Vegetation and wild life are being displaced due to our act of building shelters. So, a new conceptualization was made where the settlements were done underground rather than on the ground. This way, forest and water bodies are kept undisturbed. As a result, wildlife are also unaffected.

The initial master plan had a front block that contained washrooms and rooftop restaurant. Parking was provided in eastern direction to the front block. The front block was succeeded by a swimming pool and sauna/ steam to the north. On moving further west, one reaches a gym that

The gym block, which is current;y under construction during the preparation of this portfolio is installed with panel lights, recessed lights and wall lights. The design required to have false ceiling on bathroom area so the lighting system was proposed accordingly. On the other hand, the gym area was left as it is with minimal treatment to give the space an industrial look. So, hanging lights were proposed for this area. Hanging lights consisted of tube lights placed under trays containing small planters.

Landscapes must not be dealt with as a separate entity. The structure should not look as if it’s merely constructed on a ground and supplied with landscaping elements later. However, one ought to get a sense that the shape grew from the landscape. This concept has been centered whilst designing the landscapes of this farmhouse. The design of the farmhouse is rustic in nature with its red brick facade and terracotta tiles. To compliment these features of the building, the landscaping elements are chosen to better suit the style of the farmhouse.

The major idea of this landscaping project was to include vernacular designs that complements the building itself. So, references were searched accordingly. An infinity pool with a wooden deck, a wooden tree platform, zen garden that uses locally available materials, a seating area made using the natural contour of the land, an organic wooden arch bridge, stone stairs and paths, open fire place, amphi-theatre etc were the references which were used to create this landscaping project.

Brainstorming

The preliminary conceptual phase directed us to create landscapes that brings up curiosity either visually or through sound. We created certain vantage points around the site to allow users to rest and explore the place. During the latter phase of conceptualization, zonings were done to create a sense of privacy.

Far from the city lines, one floats on the infinity pool pondering over the lustrous mountains ahead hearing the tranquility of the nature. Looking back, he sees the tropical modern facade opening straight on a small courtyard. A side deck connects to the Cabana where other leads to the Zen Garden. Would you love to stay here?

The fireplace, located on the western side is a space for family gatherings. Curved ramp provide a connection between upper and lower part of the site.

Shrestha 20

Just like in the western side, a curved double layered ramp connects upper parking area with lower zen garden area.

A traditional style entry gate represents the first impression of building and its landscape.

The parking space bounded by a mud plaster wall elevates the design concept further to a new level.

An organic zen garden uses sand, natural stone, wood etc as decorative elements.

JHAPA HOUSING

The project had to be designed for the last plot on Housing Project in Jhapa. Jhapa being a tropical region, the character of self sustainability in terms of lighting and ventilation is always taken into consideration. The main objective was to create an open design, building connection with lawn and garden area and still be able to adapt to the conditions of the local climate. The inspiration for this project was taken from Spanish courtyard type house where the rooms are connected to the courtyard through arcades.

Sujan Shrestha 26

TRANSITION PLANNINGOPEN INVITING

COURTYARDREFERENCES

The initial idea of this project was to create an open courtyard type of house. Due to the hot and humid climate of Jhapa, the house had to be architecturally suitable to live in. Open planning that connects with the nature was the best solution for this project. So, the references were taken accordingly. Spanish courtyard houses which were the major source of inspiration for this project. The materials were taken to sheath building from extreme heat.

Practicum Report27

A northern entry followed by a deck and foyer to give a smooth transitionbetween the interior and the exterior. Service areas buffer the core areas from extreme heat. Visual connections between different spaces are provided to emphasize an open plan.

Sujan Shrestha 28

The bubble diagram portrays a visual relationship between the courtyard and building spaces. Private and semi-private areas are divided by a courtyard.

Brainstorming

Jhapa, being a hot climatic zone requires a building that can sustain a tremendous amount of heat. The design had to be done in such a way that the inside of the building was thermally comfortable and visually appealing. So, the plan was kept open on eastern and northern side while the other sides were architecturally treated to sheath from extreme heat.

Practicum Report29

CONCEPTUALIZATION

The master plan of this project includes a northward facing house that consists of a centrally placed outdoor foyer to create a welcoming entry. On entering the building, one reaches a lobby followed by a staircase. The eastern side of the building is designed as a semipublic space while the western side is designed to be private. The central lobby and staircase act as the bridge between these spaces. The southern side is provided with service spaces like bathroom, walk in closet, store, maid’s room etc. to serve as an architectural shield to the

house from harsh sunlight. However, the northern and eastern sides are glazed to create visual connections to the natural space and ventilation to the house.

While talking about the interior, living room and dining room establish a proper visual connection between the residents. Open kitchen/dining spaces provide a spatial openness to the building. The living room is made double height to give a vertical spatial openness to the building.

Master Plan

N Sujan Shrestha 30

First floor plan follows the same design philosophy as the ground floor plan. With two bed rooms on the western side of the building and one on the eastern side followed by a family space, the first-floor plan is a private part of the building. Each room excluding the family space, are provided with attached bathrooms. Service areas of the building which act as a buffer space from harsh sunlight are the continuum of the first-floor plan. A mezzanine balcony has been provided to create a visual connection between the family members and guests as well. Staircase act as a bridge to connect these spaces just like in the first floor.

As per the requirement of the client, the vice CEO’s office is furnished with beige themed furniture complemented by black essentials. The creamy paint finish of the room is accentuated by the organic wooden textured furniture.

Interior design was started by the creation of a mood board. The client was presented with two options of mood board for interior. Through a meeting, client preferred light color palette interiors. So, the conference room in ground floor and all the rooms above ground floor were designed in the preferred color palette.

Arya is an interior project handed over to A for Architecture for design and construction. The hotel is located in busy location of Thamel, Kathmandu. Standing over 12 storey tall, the hotel is built to represent a Nepalese vernacular architecture. With its front facade facing west direction, the hotel is built to accommodate enough number of vehicles in the basement parking. On entering the hotel, one is welcomed by a lavish double height reception followed by a dog legged staircase to the right. The hotel rooms are built such that they represent a typical hotel room layout with an entry girded by a washroom on the left and wardrobe with a minibar on the right. The room is only big enough to accommodate a queen sized bed along with a study table. Due to its focus on commercial use, the hotel was designed to accommodate maximum number of rooms rather than making them

The idea was to give a feeling of openness to the users in spite of the room's compact arrangement. Colors play an important role in providing a better experience to the users. Light colored interior provides an illusion of open spatial configuration. Whereas, darker colored interiors induce claustrophobia. Considering this fact, a second option to the rustic vernacular interior design was proposed which intended to contrast with the room's dark toned vernacular design.

In order to complement the exterior facade of the building, the interiors were to be conceptualized with a rustic vernacular design. But due to the smaller room size, two different interior options were prepared. One option was to give it

a rustic vernacular looks with respect to the hotel's external facade. The other one was to play with light colors to delude the users to perceiving the room to be bigger than it actually is.

Beige color was chosen as the theme color so as to give the room a warm spacious looks. Bed was specially designed to support this color theme. The queen sized bed faces a minimalistic wall hung study desk and a wooden circular chair.

Cotton fabric has been prized for its exceptional breathability and lightness. Cotton fabric is also incredibly soft, but it has heat retention attributes that make it something like a mixture of silk and wool.

Sheer fabric is fabric which is made using thin thread or low density of knit. This results in a semi-transparent and flimsy cloth.

Linen fabric feels cool; it is also breathable and is stronger and more lustrous than cotton. The more it is washed, the softer it gets. Linen is stronger when wet than when it is dry. It is also resistant to clothes moths and dirt.

The location of the project is on the hilltop of Suryachaur which is blessed by natural views. One can witness the view of Himalayas on the northern side and a view of valley on the southern side. To take the maximum advantage of these visual connections, the design was proposed in segregated blocks. One can experience a feeling of serenity and calmness during their stay at the resort.

Sujan Shrestha 62

Located on the hilltop, the site demanded a structure that complements the slope environment. So, research was done to create structures that consisted of slope roof and are gradually moving upward in a decremental order. Roofings play a vital role in making a building look iconic. Buildings of architect Charles Correa were

studied and inspirations were taken from his works. Kovalam beach resort for example, had a slope roof profile that gradually increases in height to create a sloped elevation. The material used were terracotta tiles which matches with the vernacular roofing material of Nepalese architecture.

All the grains run in the same direction giving the plywood is the bendy property and unmatched flexibility – all without losing its structural integrity.

Wall texture is a substance that is thicker than paint but thinner than a straight drywall compound. Texture applied to walls and ceilings creates small shadows due to the bumps and Whiledepressions.theseshadows tend to disappear in direct light, they lengthen as the light source moves at a sharper angle to the wall. This darkens the overall shade of the surface, thus slightly darkening the wall.

Trash Cash?or

By Sujan Shrestha Thapathali Campus of Engineering

It’s amazing how much garbage we create every day. There is trash in your kitchen, in your bedroom and also in your bathroom. Stuff like wrapping and packaging paper, aluminum cans, peels from fruits and vegetables, and so on that can all be reused and can be worth a lot of money. You can make money by making the planet better as opposed to polluting it as many economic practices do. Recycling and reusing old stuff saves a lot of landfill space, along with a lot of energy and fossils that are associated with them. Even wasted food can be reused and turned into organic fertilizer.

Nepal produces around 1435 tons of waste daily or an annual waste generation of 524,000 tons. Among this volume of waste, 70% waste is bio-degradable. An agricultural country like Nepal has a very high scope of turning trash into cash.

Sujan Shrestha 68

Junk Architecture, one of the recent efforts to save the environment while being economically beneficial. The origin of the use of scrap as a building material can be associated with the shacks in the slums. Though that is not the most desired way of using waste, it is undoubtedly the crudest form of architecture. It is from there that we get an inspiration to use waste material in a more habitable way in our mainstream buildings, providing permanent shelters to the poor and poverty-stricken segments of the society.

How do you emphasize nothingness in a building? How do you design complex spatial circulation while maintaining the appearance of simplicity? How do you become an architect, when you never get a day of conventional architectural education. The answer perhaps lies in knowing the life of one of the most celebrated architects of the 21st century. While different architects take up different approaches creating buildings that have loud and bold statements, the works of Tadao Ando seem to master the art of silence. When one moves through a space designed by Tadao Ando, they are made to experience simplicity. Tadao Ando has mastered the art of creating spaces that dare I say force you to be meditative & be present. But this world famous Pritzker winning architect, did not have a conventional entry into the field of architecture and maybe that’s because his whole life has been very unconventional.

Artificial Intelligence vs. Architecture

Practicum Report71

As humans gain experience for years to sharpen their creativity and the problem solving skills. In a particular design, the possibilities are endless. What if an AI is invented which can spit out the best possible design just by calculation based on some parameters within fraction of a second? May be it can reach a stage where it can design better than human being. The working methods have changed, tools have gotten better, faster. Professions have been constantly changing. Today the jobs of draftsperson have been replaced by softwares. Model makers are replaced by 3d model makers. The future is unpredictable. It is tough to know whether or not our jobs will be replaced. Can AI replace architects? What do you think?ByKewal Lama

Beginning with the country’s culture in Japan there are two main forms of religion which is Shintoism and Buddhism. For Shintoism, it’s about the appreciation of all living things, mother nature and life in general. As for Buddhism, it’s about the acceptance of impermanence and renunciation of attachments and the pursuit of enlightenment. So, the Metabolists believed that architecture should obey the laws of nature and adhere to the cycle of life and death.

the modernist architecture can be understood as a consequence of the fear of disease, a desire to eradicate dark rooms and dusty corners where bacteria lurk. For example: Le Corbusier lifting Villa Savoye off the humid ground to avoid contamination, Mies van der Rohe leaving the walls empty white, bare floors, and clean metal fixtures, etc demonstrate their design solutions for the pandemic at those time. The choices of materials and designs were not just aesthetically fashionable but the main purpose of the building was to function as a medical instrument itself. So the question remains, how will this pandemic reshape the architecture in years to come?

Meta-verse is the name used to name an immersive, collective and hyper-realistic virtual environment, where people will be able to live together using 3D customized avatars.

It was coined by writer Neal Stephenson in his science fiction book “Snow Crash”, published in 1992. The work tells the story of “Hiro Protagonist”, a character who in real life is a pizza delivery boy, but in the virtual world – called meta verse in the story – is a samurai. Some projects have tried to create something similar to a meta verse. One of the main examples is the game Second Life, released in 2003 by Liden Lab. The game is a 3D virtual environment that simulates real life. Users can create avatars and socialize with each other. The game has attracted thousands of gamers, but has failed to fully unite real and virtual worlds.

Architecture in Meta-verse

HOUSEARCASIA OF WORSHIP

Approach: The cultural facet of architecture has always fascinated us, whether talking about history, culture, or religious beliefs and it was this focus that gave us our start. Nepal is a country of cultural diversity where we embrace each other’s culture maintaining unity. So the main idea of the project is to create a place that collectively represents the cultural diversity of the whole nation with its symbolic or any piece of artifact from the original site. As every culture denotes a specific time frame of history, the design tries to reflect a piece of that time.

Practicum Report75

Sujan Shrestha 76

Every built structure consists of a triangular void directed towards a circular void. Wandering around in the tunnel scape, the triangular void shows the direction of the original place. Whereas the circular void contains the artifact from that place. So the people can connect to the place from the site. The rays coming through the artifact towards the space bounded by the 33 vertical structures represent the energy of culture and beliefs being accumulated from all parts of the country energizing the space.

The circular shape directs one’s movement through a series of light and shade, providing a diverse, yet the whole experience of moving in an open environment. The space is open to the sky, creating an orientation of glow and darkness for visitors. The genuine materiality forms an atmospheric homogeneity, evoking the feeling that the space never ends—a trigger of one’s imagination

Covid-19 has changed the lifestyle of people drastically. Previously, we did not imagine our home could be a multi-functional space, from office to a residence, school to hospital, playground to banquets etc. These recent changes in the lifestyle of the people due to the epidemic has brought changes in architecture as well. So, to address these changes the mood board is designed. Light color palette, complying with the theme ‘solo commerce’ was used to create a multi-functional environment. The rooms are designed such that one can work from home and work out from home at the same time.

Word of the Day

Word of the day is a daily task that we interns are assigned to bring a new word related to architecture every day and explain it to everybody in the office by giving examples. KU Exhibition Game Stall Design

Since AFA and Spaces magazine share the same office, we had been provided with an opportunity to exhibit spaces magazine in a stall during KU’s exhibition ‘Prarambha’. We came up with a strategy to draw up visitors’ attention through game. So, a model for an architectural quiz game was designed.

The goal was to throw a ball in one of the nine holes. Players were free to aim for any hole. Each hole had a different set of questions ranking from easy to super hard. The player then had to answer the question. If they got the answer right, we awarded them with different prizes according to the difficulty level of the question asked.

This project, although was way different than what we were supposed to learn during our architectural internship, taught us valuable lessons regarding crowd control and stall management. The project grabbed the attention of many people and we could share our architectural knowledge with them in a way that they would not get bored.

Getting knowledge in a fun way is the best way to get the knowledge. The extra volumes of spaces magazine were distributed among the visitors during the end of the exhibition. Everyone were happy to have the most recognized architectural magazine in Nepal.

AFA has been my friend, a family and an inspiration ever since the day I joined. “A good mentor is better than a boss” as I recall my moments in AFA because I remember me being constantly guided and motivated by my senior architects at AFA. They taught me to embrace my flaws and incompetence and encouraged me to overcome my self-created fears and insecurities. I am very grateful to my Senior Ar. Prajal Pradhan, Ar. Mahesh Maharjan, Ar. Kushum Shrestha, Ar. Karishma Manandhar, Ar. Pratibha Shrestha, Ar. Yushna Maleku, Ar. Prashant Desar who had been my constant support, inspiration, friends and family. My internship has come to an end after the completion of more than 90 days which for me just went away in a blink of an eye. The internship had been a very fun yet challenging journey but I think my journey has only just begun. I have miles to walk and as a long journey lies ahead.
