Project Explanation and My Attitude

Harlem is a community that welcomes everyone. But at the same time, since the days of Langston Hughes, Malcolm X, Zora Neale Hurston, Duke Ellington, Harlem has been the jewel of Black Americans. Since the Harlem Renaissance, Harlem is a perpetual symbol of hope and prosperity and a loving neighbor.

On one side we have what we called “Capitalism City”, a city that is ruled by the hegemony of the Real Estate, and White Culture. In comparison, the Upper Manhattan area, Harlem, became a residential district for low-income people, which is consists of Black and Latino most. Even within Harlem, East Harlem is a region where various cultural ethnicities and races are gathered while maintaining capitalism between black and white culture. This place is like a constantly withering barrier wall that most directly faces the influence of gentrification coming from the south.

According to the interview with a local president of East River House who has been living since 1971, they had suffered severe damage by Hurricane Sandy a few years ago. When the flooding hit every floor facing FDR Drive, they had to evacuate and move out of the house right away, but they didn't. The reason was simply, that this housing is heaven for them. Through this interview, we realized that people who live here don't want a nice, and luxurious life, they just want a life, costs as much possible as less. .

Demographic Change (since 2000) The minority population in East Harlem has been steadily declining since 2000, in contrast to the population growth in the Bronx and Brooklyn. It can be seen that the residents of East Harlem, where the per capita income is low, have been displaced by high flood damage and rising rents to other areas. Taking a closer look at this place, especially around the green subway line, the resident population is increasing, but the East River NYCHA Houses, which was heavily damaged by the flood, have significantly increased the resident population. This illustrates the social structure that has no choice but to leave in search of affordable housing, despite the damage from a massive flood in the future.

There is no space inside the building where residents can gather and relax at all. So residents have to bring their own chairs to the outdoor space to take a rest, of course NYCHA never offered more chairs for the community. NYCHA has a lot to offer, but it doesn't create community facilities other than refurbishing and maintaining the building. They need more chairs to form consensus and share their daily lives with neighbors. .

Now East Harlem is a community that welcomes everyone. But at the same time, because of too many fences, parked cars, and trash heap, these NYCHA houses, operating as a soft space for the neighborhood, have been giving the feeling of insecurity and discomfort. The more resident has felt insecure, the more fences they have built. They need privacy rather than more fences.

Transition NYCHA Houses, as a soft space in the city, is open to the public to visit green spaces because of the low building coverage. Buffer zones will make residents feel more secure which gives them more opportunities to feel the slow transition of environmental stress. The lightness of the additional space in contrast to the existing building can have minimal impact while keeping the existing landscape uninterrupted.

3F-8F Labyrinthine Housing : Variety of Types Conventional house types have been continuously changing to fit modern society, but all have been adapted to Western civilization. People living in this building can enjoy a variety of lives according to their individual needs with a minimum amount of space. Turning the corner reveals a new type of space, such as a narrow and long bedroom, an opposite hallway and kitchen, and an unexpected bathroom at the end of the hallway. Think about it, every time you open a moving door that acts like a wall, a different space emerges. The moment when I have to choose which door to open in which direction in my house. An open hallway built with cristal bricks and a closed living room that expands and shrinks.

MATERIALS Light materials offer many possibilities to continue their relationship while clearly dividing the space. Materials with high porosity, such as wire mesh, have low transparency when viewed up close and are perceived as a single surface when viewed from a distance. The wire mesh surrounding the terrace connected to the room allows sunlight and wind, while at the same time allowing pedestrians to show the identity of the building and the interests of the community as a graffiti or poster slogan.

03 TRIDECEMBER ; EDGE OF THE YEAR YEAR : 2018 03 - 06 TYPE : Graduation Project (Architectural Design Studio 7)_Guesthouse INSTRUCTOR : Min Lee ROLE : Individual Work SITE : Donggyo-ro, Seodaemun-gu, Seoul “At the moment when December and January cross, the Guesthouse of the month 13th open.” The site along the border of Yonhei-dong and Yonnam-dong, and the train tracks and the intersection created an illusion as if it were in the gap between time and space. Using this site feature, I focused on the view of the neighborhood next to the train track and the view of the window from the room.



Front Facade The entrance that seems to suck in pedestrians induces them to experience various spaces inside the guesthouse. Pedestrians may take interest in things that take place on the curvy surface on the second floor.

Site Condition This guesthouse is located in Yonnam-dong between Yonhei Interchange and Gyoung-i railroad. It can be disoriented when people are crossing this district because of the height of the railroad and interchange which blind the surround. This guesthouse can be a milestone by pointing the direction of the Yonnam-dong side.

The Views Travelers are able to experience various views during their stay in this guesthouse. Space of Tridecember is like a space that has captured the time between December and January. The frame that gazes into two different neighborhoods makes you feel as if you are standing on the boundary between two different time zones. The structure that displays the views has various sizes and depths.

➍ Courtyard View The courtyard frame viewed from the dining hall can overlook the center of the building. People feel the continuity of space through curved frames.

➊ Railroad View The size of frame occupying two levels is 9.3m x 6.7m which provides a wide view. As intended, by looking at other neighborhoods and a train passing through, you can see the relative position of the space in the cafe and the lobby.

➋ Entrance View This frame is slightly larger than that of a normal window. Through this frame, you can face people who come in with a large suitcase.

➌ Alley View This frame is half the size of the railroad view frame. The frame facing the curved plate arouses the interest of people passing by the alley. People in the cafe can gaze at passengers boarding the curved surface.

Facade Facing the Courtyard Both the inner facades are facing each other stood for their functional beauty. Horizontal louvers and inclined walls for the terraces prevent the building from weighing the bulky monotonous exterior facade. The external walls facing each other have access to the visual communication of the courtyard and enhance communal events that happen there. Facade Facing the Outward Terraces and tilted walls form a three-dimensional appearance of the building, creating irregular shadows on the facade. Understanding the changes of Sangsu-dong's 2050's environment, this project is mainly concerned with connecting future implications of high-density dust concentration with increasing demands for residence extension in the innovation district. While climate change continues to reveal our vulnerabilities as a species, increasing fine-dust concentration will come to the forefront as a crippling force that will compromise city infrastructure, unless we prepare.


Issue analysis Since smoke and dust from the Dangin-ri power plant blow in the opposite direction of the river, residents of this area have to clean the streets every morning. The dust from the power plant is still found in the alleys, which shows that the building landscape created by the alleys and the terrain is exacerbating air circulation.

Experiment Of Wind Speeds In Sangsu-dong, a constant wind blows due to the influence of the South Han River. In Sangsu-dong, I experimented to measure wind speed and strength with two routes. The sizes of the recorded waveforms of the two routes were distinguished.

Analysis

These four building arrangements are places where the wind stays long and ventilates slowly. Low-rise houses are lined along the curve of an alley, and the spacing is very narrow. When the wind comes in in a narrow and long alley, it stays in the space for a long time and then exits, making ventilation difficult.

Suggestion of Ideal Flow Axis The tendency in the wind direction of the upper layers is useful data to improve the wind flow of the lower layer. Overlapping representative ground wind angles 45°, 60°, 75°, 85°, 125°) on the ground floor, we can infer an ideal average axis (72°) similar to the direction of existing alleyways. Using this ideal axis of flow, I suggested the orientation of the new building.

Volumes that are arranged in 9 intersections have different formats depending on the program assembly method. 6 types that are derived from a cube form are again categorized into 16 types through the mass study. Various mass types can react to the curvy contour of the city.

Approach Located in an irregular plot of land, the design approach of the Sangsu-dong project is to turn this constraint into its unique character.

Truss format is used to limit and cut away building volume as to provide daylight (sunshine) to the lower living areas. Also, the mass arrangement based on simulation allows continuous ventilation in the neighborhood while taking care of sun radiation issues for the lower floor living space.

The sustainable extending system can accommodate the surge of occupancy density of Sangsu-dong. The grid assembly megastructure on the neighborhood is effective as it is extended horizontally and vertically, which can be suggested as a new extevnsion system of future cities.

City Growth The continuous expansion will allow the development of them to the state that allows interaction with the town. Zoning was carried out so that each building plane would contain various programs. Numerous artists living in Sangsoo-dong were induced and this space allows the display of culture, leisure, and art. This megastructure, which has created a path for wind, helps Sangsu-dong grow into a resilient city.

Spatial Sharing Relation

Spatial exposure for living unit build by the location of the outside space location that can face building walls unit buildings is recognized as a priv surroundings of the living unit build that can face two living unit buildin relatively public as the ownership is of facing the living unit building but considered as a shared one. Height According to Hierarchy The outer area is the remaining space artificially created by the architecture from the road. Also, the inner area is a centrifugal space that catches the eyes of a passerby. Therefore, the 'gaze' to the inside can coexist with 'exposure' from the outside. The paradox of housing is that low exposure in a private zone is a must for a house and that space with high exposure in a moderately private zone is also needed.

The more intense the color, the more public space is where it can be exposed to more people. In the personal living space, the living room can be such a space. The building floor plan will show a certain direction of movement that has a gradual difference in height.

Depending on the spatial sharing relationship, public space is located on a lower height that can be freely exposed while personal living space is set for higher levels to avoid visual exposure. If the spatial height is assigned according to the degree of exposure to the inside, the gaze advantage that can be preempted in each space can vary.

PRIVACY ORDER Two living units begin from a different height so that they do not face each other from the same height. Such a system is a methodological interpretation that can control the gaze of apartment housing. A space used for passing away also has a different height from that of living spaces. Sometimes you see the ankle of someone on the upper floor, and sometimes you see the head of someone on the lower floor.

We recycle trash, but most recyclables are incinerated as the recycling process is irrational. I propose a community center, which allows residents participation, by creating various types of bricks from discarded materials. This project will contemplate upon the process of recycling by gathering recyclable trash from the city and display the message of protecting our environment, positively contributing to society.

Urban Community Center This community center is derived from a variation of the basic golden ratio. The urban community center (Recycling for Integrity), which is central to the site, has programs such as an exhibition, open factory, and communal fabrication that can contribute to urban regeneration. In particular, the main program provides an open factory to show the people who live in the surrounding area, giving them a direct view of how waste is recycled, encouraging their environmental awareness. Also, it contributes to regional, cultural, and commercial development by focusing on the programs that can participate.

Community Users

There are three big categories for facility users. Managing partners manage most parts of factories, but the works created with recycled materials are mostly produced by the residents. Residents bring their trash here and can use the factories; trash is recycled as works, and the works are displayed for many to see. Materials coming in from schools nearby are sent to the big factory in the front; because as they are mass-produced, an entrance for huge transportation vehicles are required.

Site Formation The geometric form that derived from the golden ratio is all over the site, forming unique rhythm and logical rules. Narrative Steeped in geological time, the installation recognises the Fayerweather-Avery courtyard as a space that transcends capitalism, conquest and construction. Framing a minute portion of the sky above, the proposal recognises it as an eternal constant of that space. Throughout all history occurring below on the ground plane, the ether above has retained a coherent presence aligned with forces of a global scale. All developments since our stewardship of Mana-hatta, bearing in mind the overgeneralization of ‘our’ within the temporal scale of human civilization, then begins to seem insignificant. Our ancestors understood and respected this, this propos- al serves as a reminder. As such, the design removes visibility of Avery and Fayerweather hall altogether and isolates participants within the vertical relationship between ground and sky. It diminishes products spawned through our acts of conquering & owning space, an aspect so pervasive in now New York City.

Ultimately, Ether Eternal removes our current determinations, demarcations and delineations of the ‘courtyard’ and returns us to an ongoing relationship originating well before us and likely extending long after our time here.

Recycling Landscape A pavilion located in Gwanghwamun square, Korea, that creates the half-circle frame, EXQUISITENESS OF ANGLE, produces a landscape filled with various forms of nature in the day. People gather at the center of the board, and through its turning, they reside in the various angles of the natural environment for a while. At night, it reacts to the nearby streetlamps and provides bright light onto the wide surrounding space, creating a city regeneration pavilion that provides vitality to the vast and empty Gwanghwamun square.

Solar panels The panel that faces the center of the circle is covered by solar panels, taking advantage of an optimal southern exposure to sunlight by rotating according to the altitude of the sun. Taking advantage of the non-shaded plaza and maximizing sunlight exposure, most of the facade will feature solar PV cells to produce a great percentage of the consumed energy to light up at night.

Interlocking System The LED board senses the brightness of the streetlamps and adjusts the light intensity as time passes. Streetlamps and the reflection board together allow cultural activities in this pavilion (EXQUISITENESS OF ANGLE), which will contribute to increasing the city’s resilience for recovery.

LED lighting Efficient LED light fixtures will be used to further conserve energy and limit contribution to waste energy due to the long life of the lamps,. Automatic lighting controls with occupancy sensors and manual controls will be provided.Environmental screens with built in LED lighting systems ensure low energy consumption with an automatized illumination management that provides a long life lasting screen imagery projection.

In Yonsei, the franchise that is famous for the gentrification phenomenon occupies the main road. As a result, the commercial power that has been maintained for a long time is gradually disappearing. Therefore, I would like to build a company and student collaboration shop where students can run at this age. Antenna Shop, Stand Up, is a shop that leads to fashion, art, and commerce by blending the trendy sense of young students with the reputation of the franchise. I classified the space as simply as possible, and created a buffer space to enable collaborative projects.

Unlike the interiors, which vary in a variety of periodicities, the exterior of the building does not change often. The building, which appears to be cut and separated by massive plates, only looks at the front and back. The collaboration zone with a brick facade emphasizes that it is a shop, made with residents using the red brick, which is best used in Sinchon.

Franchise companies can gain unprecedented competitiveness by encouraging and assisting students in inducing free ideas and trends. The floor plan of the building shows a buffer zone forming a collaboration zone between the student and the company.

Since it was the first time to curate the exhibition by students, the budget was not enough, but our aim and expectation were high. To solve the budgetary problem, we utilized previous exhibition materials and purchased only the necessary stuff, wooden panels, and steel frames to minimize the spending. Using a new way of assembling the existing furniture, the long leading table was created. By sorting the model tables in the group and placing the black steel frame, structural stability enhanced, and detail quality improves. Overall comments on the exhibition were exceptional, and the team is maintained to curate all exhibitions in the department.

The central theme of the curation was to provide customized exhibition space for each graduating student since previous exhibition spaces were monolithic. Working as the leading curator of the exhibition, we went through several meetings and feedback with the exhibitors; more than 80 wooden panels (1.2m by 1.2m ) were customized using the CNC device.
