| PREFACE

Pierre Jaquet Droz was one of the greatest craftsmen of his time. Born in La Chaux-de-Fonds in 1721, he was a master watchmaker of genius and vision who marked the history of his profession. Since Jaquet Droz joined the Swatch Group in 2000, it has continued its never-ending quest to perpetuate the history and expertise of its founder. In the summer of 2010, the company moved into its new Atelier de Haute Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds, which will allow the brand to meet rising market demand as well as its ambitious growth targets. Part of the Swatch Group’s Prestige and Luxury Range, Jaquet Droz develops unique products characterized by exceptional craftsmanship. Today, my mission is to cultivate this emphasis on excellence and innovation and continue to communicate our core values of emotion and poetic imagination. At Jaquet Droz, the spirit of the Enlightenment is still alive and well in the third millennium. Let me wish you “Bon voyage !” as you start your journey through the world of Jaquet Droz ! Marc A. Hayek, President of Montres Jaquet Droz SA

Since it was first established in 1738, Jaquet Droz has perpetuated the spirit of innovation and aesthetic refinement of its founder, Pierre Jaquet Droz. The first watchmaker to set up shop in Geneva, this ingenious inventor and man of uncommon vision conquered the royal courts of Europe and China with his stunning creations: fabulous humanoid automata and precious musical watches. Expressing the values of the Age of Enlightenment, this elegant and well-traveled philosophy still forms the core of our identity. Jaquet Droz timepieces have always combined design, materials with the most unexpected mechanical refinements. The most elaborate complications are beautifully showcased with the purity of enamel or the luster of pearls and precious stones. The Manufacture’s exclusive spirit is intact after nearly three centuries, as attested by its exquisite dials, made to order from precious minerals and rare woods, its ultra-select collections and its Numerus Clausus limited editions. At Jaquet Droz, we remain true to our time-honored goal, namely, to push back the limits of the watchmaker’s art for your greater pleasure.

| JAQUET DROZ’S HISTORY

When Pierre Jaquet Droz opened his second watchmaking workshop in London and put his son Henry-Louis in charge of the new branch, he provided a striking demonstration of his strategic audacity and his farreaching vision. In the Age of Enlightenment, London was the commercial decisionmaking heart of Europe, the key business center. He was the first to feel the potential of London, a city which offers a direct access

to the Forbidden City and the Chinese market at that period. Being totally overworked, Henry-Louis delegated a part of his responsibilities and put Jean-Frédéric Leschot, adoptive son of Pierre Jaquet Droz, in charge of the London workshop. The latter was in particular responsible for dealing with Cox & Son, whose agents in Canton planned to open all possible doors to the Far East market and were to represent

JAQUET DROZ’S HISTORY |

Jaquet Droz in China, India and Japan for many years. During the 18th century, in the heart of Beijing, the emperor and the imperial court’s dignitaries collected Pierre Jaquet Droz’s masterpieces. QianLong, the Emperor of Qing Dinasty, was engrossed in European mechanical clocks and automata. He set up a national own private office with hundreds of people working for the importation and

trading of these watches and automatons from Europe. One of the main trading companies with the Qing Dynasty, James Cox London, shipped a lot of Jaquet Droz masterpieces from the Jaquet Droz London Manufacture to the Forbidden City. Jaquet Droz was the first watchmaking brand imported into the Forbidden City. There are a lot of Jaquet Droz automata and pocket watches in the Forbidden City Museum today.

Self-Winding Double-Train Movement Watch Diameter 57.5 mm, in gold and enamel, set with rubies and pearls, centered seconds. Produced by Jaquet Droz in 1785 for the Chinese market.

Double-Train Movement â–¸ Gilt-brass full-plate double-train movement, cylinder escapement, the going train and the striking both being wound by means of two gold oscillating weights pivoted on the edge of the back plate. Jaquet Droz was the only watchmaker to produce selfwinding watches where both the going train and the striking train were wound by means of a gold oscillating weight.

The identity of the Jaquet Droz family was shaped by its history, creations and encounters. With each new venture, the Jaquet Droz signature became increasingly recognizable as the genetic codes of the brand evolved: the Grande Seconde, the figure 8, enameling, watch cases with sensuous curves, watch movements with perfect finishes, Grand Complications, highly exclusive Numerus Clausus limited editions and the use of minerals epitomizing the unique nature of each timepiece in the Jaquet Droz collection.

THE JAQUET DROZ’S 8 CODES

Its elegance is a promise of eternity. Never before in the history of watchmaking has boldness of design been illustrated with such nobility, while conserving the purity that all the Grande Seconde models have been reasserting for over two hundred years. On a single dial, the hours and minutes counter, off-centered at 12 o’clock, embraces the seconds counter, situated at 6 o’clock, with echoes of Avant-Garde poetry, aesthetics at the very core of the identity of Jaquet Droz. From the 18th century to the third millennium, the Grande Seconde has been the eternal source of inspiration for the Manufacture of La Chaux-de-Fonds: a timeless icon in extremely exclusive interpretations which evolve with time and with each new collection. Outlined with pearls or precious stones and clad in Grand Feu enameling or rare minerals, the Grande Seconde represents both prodigious history and the present moment and leaves the promises of the future to the imagination with the majestic elegance of its lines.

CODE N°1 / GRANDE SECONDE

A symbol of light and perfection, 8 has a universal strength It represents the 8 lotus petals

epitomizing the Buddhist’s eightfold path In Africa, 8 personifies creation

Islam teaches that there are 8 doors to paradise

For the Christians, it represents the celebration of the resurrection of Christ, which represents the 8th day of creation

The number refers to the Indian notion of the body’s 8 chakras

In Asia, 8 captures the notion of good fortune

THE JAQUET DROZ’S 8 CODES |

Formed by two subdials on the watch face, this symbol suggests the rarity of limited editions and exclusive models produced in small numbers. Representing infinity and eternity, the number 8 is one of the Manufacture’s most distinctive and magical numerological references. Jaquet Droz subdials play with Arabic and Roman numerals, treating each passing moment as unique. In other words, they offer a new perception of Time.

Grand Feu enameling is one of the expert techniques that constitute the signature of a Jaquet Droz watch. Combining traditional production methods with latest-generation technology, the dial-makers at Jaquet Droz have kept up with the latest developments in timepieces and the technical constraints that they involve. Today, the techniques required to make a thin watch dial of impeccable design have no more secrets for our master craftsmen. Relying on the subtle interaction of ultra-fine powders and precision kilns, our dial-makers are the sole guardians of the formula that yields these magnificent dials, whose color and graining are absolutely unique. Once a piece is finished, it is inalterable. The enamel will retain its beauty and gloss for centuries, withstanding the ravages of time indefinitely. A distinctive signature of Jaquet Droz timepieces since the 18th century, Grand Feu enameling has been reinterpreted by the brand in its contemporary collections.

CODE N°3 / GRAND FEU ENAMELING

THE JAQUET DROZ’S 8 CODES |

At Jaquet Droz, a watch case is like a treasure chest full of mechanical wonders to track time. Handsomely curved and perfectly sized, it was carefully conceived to contain remarkable movements. This design expresses choices, desires and yearnings in the strength of steel, the majestic gleam of white or red gold, the unalterable elegance of the ceramic material, or the lightness of the titanium. The Manufacture believes that each watchcase is absolutely essential, whether it has a screw-type back or comes in one piece. Each one undergoes no fewer than 80 different operations. That’s why Jaquet Droz prizes the hands of its master craftsmen above any manufacturing tool.

| THE JAQUET DROZ’S 8 CODES

Founded nearly three centuries ago, Jaquet Droz has always incorporated cutting-edge watchmaking technology into its time-keeping creations. Jaquet Droz mechanical self-winding and manually wound movements are all engraved with a clover, the secret signature of the founder of the Manufacture. The bridges and plates are adorned with Côtes de Genève ribbing, while the luxurious sunray motif on the oscilling body is visible through the transparent case back: a sunburst or spiral motif for classic timepieces or those with complications, hollowed out for sports watches.

CODE N°5 / THE MOVEMENT

THE JAQUET DROZ’S 8 CODES |

In a never-ending quest to surpass its own achievements, Jaquet Droz takes the inventiveness of its luxury watches – and the pride of their possessors – to new heights. When its founder first established his watchmaking business in 1738, he specialized from the start in ultra-luxurious timepieces that featured musical mechanisms, automata or Grand Complications. This precious sunburst harbors sophisticated complications: tourbillon, minute repeater, equation of time, perpetual calendar, jumping hour or chronograph.Time does not express itself in one dimension alone. This inspired Jaquet Droz to focus on all of the codes connected with its plurality, from the retrograde date hand to the indication of moon phases.

Real luxury is rare. With its one-of-a-kind creations and its Numerus Clausus editions limited to 8, 28 or 88 pieces, Jaquet Droz also masters the art of exclusivity. This is truly the world of Haute Horlogerie, an eternal quest for elegance and technical perfection.

THE JAQUET DROZ’S 8 CODES |

Throughout the ages, man has contemplated the stars and the most beautiful planet of all – his own – in an effort to elucidate the mysteries of Time. In honor of this endeavour, begun at the dawn of time, Jaquet Droz has fashioned inimitable watch dials from noble materials, treasures drawn from the depths of the Earth and from outer space. These dials offer the poetry of meteorites crossing galaxies, the geometry of rutilated inclusions in quartz, the mystery of onyx, aventurine, spectrolite, pietersite... Minerals are like the memory of the Earth and our galaxy.Whether they come from deep within the earth or the far reaches of space, they transform each watch dial into a fabulous journey through the infinity of time.

In the 18th century, the watch masters in the Jaquet Droz family were pioneers in the art of luxury decoration, generating work for an entire generation of craftsmen. Their success and fame increased after the introduction of paillons and painted motifs to decorate the enameled surfaces of watchcases and other masterpieces: pocket watches, decorative urns, snuffboxes and cages for mechanical singing birds. These techniques were finally adopted, but much later, by the enamellers of the time. These special skills are still applied to a few truly exceptional pieces in our collection. By perpetuating tradition, they pay tribute to the meticulous practitioners of a venerable art.

Widely recognized for his watchmaking talent, Jaquet Droz was also a man of great vision. Very soon aware of his potential beyond the Swiss borders, he did not hesitate to establish a Manufacture in London in order to gain easier access to the very promising market that was opening up in China. Subsequently, he consolidated his international reputation by opening a workshop in Geneva, the first ever established in that city. The legend of Jaquet Droz, who owned three watch factories and traveled extensively, especially to Paris, continues to inspire the collections of today and lend them a special significance.

THE COLLECTIONS

Representing a bridge between the Age of Enlightenment and the third millennium, the LEGEND GENEVA collection by Jaquet Droz evokes the union of Haute Horlogerie and poetry, contemporary aesthetics and timeless appeal. Directly inspired by an 18th century pocket watch, the Grande Seconde is a reference to the luxurious and refined models created by Pierre Jaquet Droz in his third watchmaking workshop, opened in Geneva in 1784. In choosing this location, Pierre Jaquet Droz displayed a pioneering spirit, since his manufactory was the first ever organized in this city.

42

| THE POCKET WATCH

The Jaquet Droz Pocket Watch is a watchmaking legend perpetuated over the centuries. Jaquet Droz is now bringing this poetic icon back to center stage. This model, designed in 1785, transcends the generations and is the inspiration of our flagship model – the Grande Seconde Enamel – whose timeless beauty would signal the renaissance of the brand. Produced in a Numerus Clausus of 88 and featuring an ivory or black Grand Feu enameled dial, a manual movement with 40-hour power reserve, the Jaquet Droz Pocket Watch pays tribute to a philosophy that has remained unchanged since the Age of Enlightenment.

When Pierre Jaquet Droz opened his second watchmaking workshop in London in 1774, he provided a striking demonstration of his strategic audacity and his far-reaching vision. In the Age of Enlightenment, London was the commercial decision-making heart of Europe, the key business center. Entering the sports watch field, Jaquet Droz confirms its mastery of the aesthetic and technical concerns of the 21st century, based on the Manufacture’s values over the last two centuries: boldness, a sense of adventure and the love of a challenge. Inspired by the 8 and the infinity, the Grande Seconde SW, the SW Chrono and the Grande Seconde Ceramic compete with the finest examples in watchmaking.

No two identical beings exist: for Jaquet Droz, the essence of each individual is a source of wonder, imagination and creation. The Lancine hand of the Grande Heure is the ultimate expression of such uniqueness. This timepiece is also the fruit of a seemingly unbelievable vision: to live time differently and to appreciate it in a new light, guided only by the elegantly tapered and blued steel unique indicator. This piece offers a new way of finding one’s bearings in the perception of a unique moment... and of taking full advantage of it.

| THE LONGITUDES

With its off-centered dials, bold lines and perfectly engineered mechanisms, expressing the creativity and technical virtuosity of the master watchmaker, this majestic timepiece is a poem to time and space. An ode to here and elsewhere, recited in Roman numerals on the first longitude indicator at 3 o’clock and in Arabic numerals on the dial opposite. The spectacular minutes hand incessantly sweeps its centered dial, maintaining a playful tension with the Serpentine date hand, very different in size and shape. Set off by a large, handsome 18-carat white gold case, The Longitudes is poetry in motion.

| THE TIME ZONES

The complication known as The Time Zones displays the reference time on the off-centered hours and minutes counter at 12 o’clock, along with the 24-hour counter. Then comes the subtle appearance of the “other” time, time to see a loved one again, the local time (or GMT time) with its central hours and minutes indication. In harmony with the Jaquet Droz spirit, the seconds are clearly displayed at 6 o’clock and, to complete the picture, a window at 3 o’clock indicates the date of local time (GMT date).

As the creator of watches, clocks and automatons that were universally recognized for their elegance and finesse, Pierre Jaquet Droz succeeded in making people forget about the phenomenal complexity of the mechanisms and movements required to actually run his masterpieces. In 1738, it was in his first workshop that Pierre Jaquet Droz began to specialize in the production and export of timekeepers endowed with Grand Complications such as a piece of music, a singing bird, or a mechanism striking hour or automatically... The workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds excelled in all fields of mechanical ingenuity. This Complication LA CHAUX-DE-FONDS collection is dedicated to Grand Complications specialties.

| CHRONO GRANDE DATE

To grasp the power of each second and to measure oneself by the time that passes: these are the dual aspirations that inspired the craftsmen of the Manufacture at La Chaux-de-Fonds to design this sporty chronograph – the Chrono Grande Date – in no less than five versions, playing on the virility of steel case with black PVD finish, the subtlety of red gold, the elegance of black opaline or the unique texture of Grand Feu enameling.Yet beneath the distinguished design of these exteriors, the movement pulses with each instant, combining form and content in an unprecedented example of watchmaking poetry.

102 | PERPETUAL CALENDAR

The Perpetual Calendar by Jaquet Droz is a full-fledged horological masterpiece. The interplay of the blued steel hands is particularly representative of this keen sense of merging Haute Horlogerie with poetry. The Serpentine hands are reserved for the Calendar functions – months, days and date – with a double-retrograde indication of the day and date; while the Lancine hands are dedicated to the Time functions – central hours and minutes indication and small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.

106 | PERPETUAL CALENDAR CERAMIC

With the Perpetual Calendar Ceramic, Jaquet Droz makes a strong statement about its Avant-Garde identity in the world of Haute Horlogerie. The Manufacture has pushed the possibilities of the ceramic material to their limits while keeping the retraction index under perfect control. The master dial-makers showed similar technical genius, working to specifications that demanded nothing less than perfection. For this Numerus Clausus of 88, they demonstrated the full measure of their talent by creating a black opaline dial adorned by a black gold ring with a fine-brushed finish.

108 | TOURBILLON

To truly appreciate the value of each passing instant, one must be able to measure it. Jaquet Droz has taken one of its most emblematic models – the Grande Seconde – and incorporated the tourbillon, a complication universally recognized as one of the masterpieces of precision watch-making. After reviewing all of the creative options offered by the figure 8 symbol and the white or red gold case, the master dial-makers at Jaquet Droz decided to place the tourbillon at the very heart of the seconds counter, off-centered at twelve o’clock.

112 | TOURBILLON

Breathtaking, elegant, precise and freed from the earth’s gravitational pull... the Tourbillon from Jaquet Droz accomplish an extraordinary watchmaking feat: to bring together the peak in technical prowess with an aesthetic that is constantly being recreated. With its legendary complication set at 6 o’clock, the genius of the craftsmen of La Chaux-de-Fonds is set free from the constraints of gravity. The hours and minutes dial magnifies the contrasts: the ethereal softness of the silver endowed with sparkling clarity, and the mystery of the black opaline... an interplay of colors in the manner of a painting by an old master, concentrated onto a reduced surface – 44 mm in diameter – and produced in a limited edition of just 8 or 28.

116 | TOURBILLON POWER RESERVE

Jaquet Droz has pushed back the technical limits, by adorning its Tourbillon model with two additional complications: a retrograding date and an 88-hour power reserve indicator. This is a real achievement on a 47 mm diameter surface. It is by shaping the space, choosing black opaline as the backdrop, and positioning the displays to face each other, that Jaquet Droz has overcome this double challenge. With its design reminiscent of Art Deco, and its delicate three dimensional character, the Tourbillon Power Reserve, produced in a limited edition of 28, appears in the space of a single flutter of a wing to take dramatic flight, illuminated by the gold of the watch case and the sober elegance of a rolled-edge hand-crafted alligator leather strap.

A cultural and intellectual bastion central to 18th century history, Paris has always held pride of place for our Manufacture. During the Age of Enlightenment, its founder Jaquet Droz frequently visited Paris, where he presented his models to Marie-Antoinette, Queen of France. Designated the capital of femininity, art and fashion, the city has been famous ever since for its jewellery watches, set with precious stones or pearls. Mysterious and enchanting, the ELEGANCE PARIS collection represents yet another milestone in our unrelenting quest to push back the limits of Beauty.

A dazzling symphony of gems and sparkles. Virtuoso gem-setting. With the Grande Seconde Circled, the Manufacture presents a model of amazing beauty that exalts the art of Time. The pleasure of wearing this luxurious creation at all times is intensified by the radiance of diamonds. This pleasure is embodied in the design of the legendary watch face, with its two overlapping dials. One, at 12 o’clock, marks the hours and minutes; the other at 6 o’clock, which measures the seconds, is larger, as if to assert the primacy of smaller intervals over the traditional perception of Time.

Secondly, modernity, for a watch case taken to new levels by the choice of the materials: ceramic and integrated rubber band set with 4 diamonds. Then beauty, evidently, in the iridescent mother-of-pearl dial with a hint of red on the seconds hand. Finally, daring in the choice of a color so intensely present and rarely used in the world of watchmaking: white.

Dazzling and feminine, The Heure Astrale and Petite Heure Minute immediately project both the radiance of their design and the purity of their shapes in a subtle asymmetry that is characteristic of Jaquet Droz: showcasing an exquisite round case in 18-carat white gold, brilliantly sparkling precious stones, delicately shimmering lacquer, illuminating the beauty of onyx and mother-of-pearl. These odes to femininity are a privilege reserved for the most fortunate.
