Diplomatic Career

H.E. Mr. Niankoro Yeah Samake, Ambassador of Mali to India

He is known for bringing around transformative and revolutionary reforms through his vision, leadership and impeccable administrative acumen. He demonstrated these qualities as a Mayor of the city of Ouelessebougou Mr. Niankoro Yeah Samake serves as the second Malian Ambassador to India. He was nominated by the Malian President His Excellency Ibrahim Boubacar Keita in May 2015. On September 2, 2015 Ambassador Samake presented to the President, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, his letters of credence. He is also accredited to Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand. Ambassador Samake has a distinguished career in the private and public sectors. From 2009 until his appointment as Ambassador he served as Mayor of the city of Ouelessebougou, a municipality in Mali, consisting of a population of 55000 people. For the past 10 years, his commitment to improving rural conditions in Mali and development expertise has allowed him to serve in the capacity of Director/ Consultant to the Empower Mali Foundation and other foundations. He has also served as a Special Envoy to two Prime Ministers during which time he shared the political and social perspectives of the Malian Government with multilateral/bilateral partners. He brings to the post his experience in diplomacy, international development and a commitment to strengthen ties between the Republic of Mali and the Governments of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei Darussalam and Thailand. Ambassador Samake holds a Masters Degree in Public Policy from Brigham Young University, Utah, USA and a Bachelors Degree from Ă&#x2030;cole Normale SupĂŠrieure in Bamako, Mali. He and his wife Marissa Countinho have two children.

Dr. Pathakji, we have come to Sulabh to learn and we are going home inspired I salute you. India offers the world great leaders. It is not about the toilets, it is about the people. What is being done here is divine. It is divine. When we walked into this place I felt the spirit of God. Everything is moving by inspiration. You believe in what you are doing. You make the guest feel like God. I would want to come back to Sulabh again and again and again, because Dr. Pathak is truly an angel I would like to give many thanks to young lady Ms. Hawa Deme. I live here in India. I did not know about toilets. It took Hawa who learnt and was inspired by Dr. Pathak, she said he is 73-years-old but he moves like a young man. Hawa is going to take the torch that you lit for us and go to Mali and inspire others and provide freedom, humanity, the law of oneself, self-esteem that has enthused people for having an adequate toilet. Dr. Pathak, its very important, because I will tell you this, I come from poverty. I too was untouchable because poverty makes you excluded, so I know how it feels to be excluded. I know how it feels to be treated like nothing, but there is nothing greater, nothing feels better to be liberated from the beginner to become a whole, a whole human being. You are not building toilets, you are building wholesome humanity. India yet again is offering the whole world, great leader like Mahatma Gandhi, like Modiji. So, Dr. Pathak, I am very pleased to be here. We will take this idea. My support for Hawa was very strong. But now I have become a convinced Sulabh advocate. I am joining the movement. Sulabh is a movement. DIEYA is a movement when I call DIEYA an association Hawa says no, DIEYA is a movement. Let’s move people to cleanliness, let’s move people to sustainability, let’s move people to a wholesome humanity. Dr. Pathak I thank you for having us here. I thank you for inspiring us. As the Founder of the DIEYA Movement, I’m committed to give access to worthy toilets for all in Africa. Let’s share my passion about improving people’s lives. -Hawa Deme Hawa DEME created the Dieya Movement in 2016 in order to lift its fight for access to dignified, ecological and sustainable sanitation for all in Mali and Africa in particular, to promote the education of girls in a safe environment. It is dedicated to construction of toilets and dissemination hygiene programmes in schools. Hawa Deme holds an MBA, a Master’s Degree in International Finance, and a Master’s Degree in Economics. Specializing in Internal Audit, after starting her career as a consultant in strategy and risk management firms, she has been engaged on the voluntary ground since very young age. She is the initiator of Hope Week, coordinator of Umuganda Africa, and was President of the Association of Graduates and Students Malians of France (ADEMFrance). Passionate about Africa, Hawa Deme puts her expertise and leadership on topics related to education, employment, entrepreneurship and training, especially young people and women, on which she has acquired expertise. This is how she is regularly solicited as a resource person to international and governmental organizations and associations, around these key topics.

Good Morning everyone, I am sorry I didn’t prepare any speech, well, I will try to talk with my heart. I am very honoured to be here and see such an amazing welcome, and ya, it’s really very emotional. My name is Hawa Deme, I am 32-years-old, I am married. I have two children, one daughter and one son. My daughter is 7 years-old and my son is two-years-old. I spent much time in my life in activism, in working in association for students, social working and so on. And last year I was thinking about what I can do more for the people of my country. And I don’t know, why I was thinking about toilets. Because when I was a young girl, I remember that it was really hard, when I went somewhere to use toilet there, because most of the time it was too dirty, it was smelly. And at school also it was really difficult. I was in the girls’ school and I know many needy girls didn’t use toilets at school. So I decided to try to do something in order to work on toilets in my country and to help people to have a behaviour change in this area. So, I tried my research about this subject. Naturally I discovered Dr. Bindeshwar Pathak. It was so impressive and I decided to come to visit India, to visit his work and naturally I contacted my ambassador here who was also very helpful and this also helped me. And I had the chance to meet Dr. Pathak in France because actually I live in Paris and two weeks or three weeks later I am here and now I think I did the best choice because when I see this I think Dr. Pathak deserves the Nobel Prize of Peace, this is what I think. Because this is just great. You deserve it, it is amazing. Thank you, thank you very much.
