I lead the coordination and tender delivery of the Facades Package. The technical and comprehensive delivery required constant liaison with specialist consultants, suppliers and client team to produce a safe and detailed envelope. The facade is comprised of a unique perforated metal cladding and also GRC corrugated brick systems. The facade itself celebrated the nature of the sites engineering lineage, whilst commemorating the future of engineering brilliance.

Henley’s plans will see Hobson House be restored and given a new life as a 57-room boutique hotel and tea room, with key features of the historic former police and fire station preserved, restored and opened up to the public. The hotel will fully utilise the existing spaces within Hobson House, taking into the interior the existing external drill hall and extending the rear to incorporate the historic Constables House.

Through a constant refinement within the design process, see previous section, the massing for the new build elements, mainly to the rear at Downing Place, have developed to become an appropriate addition to the heritage asset.

Finally, the majority of the retained windows within the building will require a secondary glazing system to enhance thermal and acoustic properties. The proposal is for this to sit within the existing stone mullions and to have a lightweight dark bronze frame. This proposal will alleviate any intervention to the historic glazing whilst providing a suitable solution.

Secondly, to the North of the Drill Hall are five smaller arches with stone surrounds. As part of the proposal a two storey extension will be constructed behind these, the central floor of which will be visible from the proposed Tea Room. To minimise the impact of this floor it is proposed to set it back and in-fill the void with horizontal glazing which will alleviate its visual impact.

Firstly, among the key features of the proposed building, the large archways within the Drill Hall are proposed to be glazed to accommodate the Tea Room as an internal space and therefore require a sensitive approach to their details to ensure no damage to incurred to the existing fabric.

The extensions on the north and south wings resolve the lack of connectivity between the historic and new build elements, giving level access from the new lifts and assisting with servicing the Boutique Hotel offering.

The historic division of site split the street frontage into three and our proposal continues this allowing the Constable’s House to site centrally. The proposed buildings to either side vary in height from three and a half stories to the south down to two and a half stories to the north, where the streetscape steps down to the neighbouring heritage asset. The composition is capped with a mansard roof that sets back against the historic neighbouring property to the north and reflects its more domestic feel.

From initial sketches into a long stretched planning submission and listed building concent, I lead the project to achieve unanimous planning approval. The grade II listed Hobson House, was a former police station, and now to be converted from council office space into a highend boutique hotel. The contemporary vernacular design celebrates various historic features including the exterior facade, ornate staircase and entrance hall and stain-glass windows. A former drill yard will become a fine dining restaurant.

Pendley Manor was listed in 1986, with Grade II status. As part of the planning application, a listed building consent application was included to allow the proposed works. Following consent, the works carried out to the building would form part of the listing. The Pendley Manor Hotel project entailed a refurbishment of the existing 73 room hotel, adding 13 to make a total of 86 new guest-rooms and a leisure centre comprising of a pool, spa with treatment rooms, dance studio and gym. The project programme was split into 4 phases to maintain hotel operation. The hotel would be split into the old wing of the building, The Manor House, and the newer addition wing, The Harcourt. The site also includes many other facilities including meeting rooms, restaurant and Banquette halls, and also vast expanses of manicured grounds (12.4 acres). As a project Architect, I played a pivotal role in the execution of the construction of the scheme. I developed key relationships was all involved and personally monitored site progress to ensure the design standards and quality were met. The project lead to me receiving a commendation for my RIBA Part III examination.

Sulaiman Quereshi ARCHITECT \ ARB RIBA

Premier In, New Marylebone Yard LONDON, UK.

Located between Waterloo Station and Tate Modern, in the heart of the London Borough of Southwark, this 274-key new build, mid-market hotel, has two separate blocks of accommodation connected via an elegant lightweight glazed bridge link. The 9800 sq ft development includes a ground-floor restaurant, fronting onto an inviting public courtyard and pocket park. My role allowed me to provide documentation and drawings in tender and construction phases, through BIM and on-site review. I was producing schedules, coordinating required services into the design as well as specifying and detailing issues onsite. The unique and complex project provided a great insight into a new build project of this scale.

1A Bath Road SLOUGH, UK.

Neighbouring Heathrow and part of London’s greenbelt, the Bath road scheme was produced by the office to promote generous accommodation, sustainable design concepts that are immersed within nature. The scheme was revitalised to bring in the NPPFs most current policies, as well as a contemporary demand for such a hotel offer. Through my coordination of an esteemed consultation team, the scheme boasted rich ecological respect to the landscape, advanced services technologies and also the design lead sustainable double-skin facades. The scheme received planning consent successfully, for 192 high-end hotel accommodation, with vast conferencing space, and front of house provisions.

STAGES

In review of the previously approved scheme, from alternative archites, numerous issues were raised in relation to layout efficiencies, buildabillity and viability. Furthermore, the consented scheme did not comply with current fire regulations as it lacked a second means of escape, which has now been intricately incorporated through the use of an external stair. The consented scheme also had insufficient service/ plant areas. Through professional consultation with structural and services consultants, the proposed scheme is now more buildable and adequate plant and servicing for the intended hotel offer has been allowed for. The new scheme offers a better quality of hotel, with an increase of hotel key provision, reconfigured FOH area and quality office space. All of which contribute to the successful development of the Camden Lifestyle Hotel.

A high-end residential Ski Chalet set within a challenging environment, provided a unique project experience. The role required me to assist in the coordination and technical delivery of stages 3/4 for the project. The unique environment required constant review of material suitability, as well as the accuracy of the architecture with the terrain. I further assisted through the delivery of BOH, external and interior drawing packages.

Menara Haw Par is located at the heart of Kuala Lumpur, an environment which is constantly ever evolving. Being given the opportunity to influence both the design, tender and construction management stages enhances much of my understanding in the professional context of architecture. PLAN 03 LOCATION The office tower was my work environment, as such I had been constantly evolving along with the project itself. Through development stages such as governmental submissions and construction tender, I was immersed into the scale of the proposal, understanding how each detail need to be nurtured. The delivery of the package entailed two stages, stage one the internal refurbishment of the lobby and rental units, and stage two the landscaping and tower facade. MHP Tower project was completed in 2016. PA 101060

The OUG Mixed-use development is a 22acre space located in Kuala lumpur. The proposal brings forth a mall complex, office towers, residential towers and hotel towers. The development’s location is critical to its surrounding areas as intended to promote the integration of a whole new community to an already thriving suburban community. My intervention to the concept would be through outdoors spaces, social and cultural spacial design, and an Urban rooftop garden hosting urban farming concepts through Aquaponics. By using technologies such as rainwater harvesting and filtration to provide usable water for the development, we intended to become a president in sustainable design in the region. The canopies have been assorted to shelter the urban Aquaponic farm, defining the space and allowing the necessary natural light in to maintain the balanced environment required for such farming. I took initiative to head a Corporate Social Responsibility programme for the provision of a public greenspace through replanting of tree and plant saplings on-site prior demolition. The Saplings would be placed within a communal garden for residents of the mixed-use complex and local community. Through successful pitching of the technical and programmatic documents, the CRS balanced the economic demands of developers and access of local community, whilst fostering a natural environmentally positive solution

Undertaking the RIBA Part 1 course at the CASS School of Architecture provided a personal pivotal milestone into my architectural profession and education pathway. During the first year, this undergraduate course provided students with a platform to expand unfiltered creative designs and spatial ideas, allowing us to explore those ideas using various techniques and expressions. Towards the end of the year and as I approached the second year my tutors began to encourage me to capture my ideas within specific boundaries of conventions in the form of set briefs. Through these limitations, I began to understand that the scope of responsibility that this profession may hold was indeed a learning curve. I successfully completed the course, having driven approaches of architecture, that where holistic, sustainable and within a diverse range of contexts.

My exploration and research within the university led me to STUDO USE. Here i explored the potential of urban artistic intervention to convert dis-used world war two bunkers within Dortmund Germany to house an entire network of production, consumption, and mobility, of a staple smoked meat for Dortmund. This proposal also aimed to integrate the recent flux of migrant communities around the region. The theme of agrarian reform helped me dismantle the way food shapes our cities, and in particular, I focused on the model of Cuba through its revival from the impacts of the embargo, as the country provided for its national demand through localized, community-led food supply.

Throughout the summer in between the years of the MArch degree, I joined the WWOOF initiative, (World Wide Organisation for Organic Farming), which allows organic farmers around the world to invite members to work on their farms in exchange for accommodation and food. One of the farms I worked on was with a family within Aljezure Portugal, A town which would become the focus of my final year design thesis. Using a registered staple cuisine, the Aljezure Sweet Potato, for which the town hosts an annual festival where 25,000 people congregate for the harvest of the vegetable, I proposed an agrarian reform of the region. The master planning provided for a closed loop system across the Aljezure valley, suggesting it could become a precedent for sustainable living within Europe through this. I further explored the architectural material of the region by investigating harvest cycles to ethically produce my proposals onsite. For example, cork is known to be harvested in abundance within the region, however, it is required to be hung to dry out for 6 months, and to promote its ancestral harvest technique, I proposed that the façade of my building would have Cork solar shading which would be changed annually through an integrated cork festival.
