Professional Statement
I have developed an intense passion for architectural design over the years of my studies. My academic world has helped me understand architecture not just as ‘the abstract’ or ‘the actual,’ but paradoxically as both. It is the nature of architecture that connects the abstract with the actual.
I have viewed architecture as an endless thrill of imagination, exploration, creation; as an ability to perceive the imagined, transformed into the definite. Now as I enter the experiential world of architecture, I look forward to take up the creative spirit and challenges in the design environment. The creativity quotient inspires me to grow and expand my imagination, exploration & execution skills.

Design Concept The i ntent was pri m ari l y to m ai ntai n the cul tural es s ence of the nei ghborhood, and i ntroduce a m oder n as pect that s haped D ubai over the years . The uni t cons i s ts of a l i vi ng/ di ni ng area, an open ki tchen, a bedroom (wi th wal k-i n cl os et) and an entertai nm ent area.
Design Idea A s per the res earch, the preferences i ndi cated to a very s i m pl e, m oder n-m i n i m al i s t des i gn approach. D rawi ngs i nfl uences from Tadao A ndo’s and Mi es van der Rohe’s works com bi ned, the i dea was a choi ce of a ‘ fl at s ol i d’ or a ‘ tex tured s ol i d, ’ on the front and rear el evati ons . The upper fl oor i s a canti l ever over the pati o bel ow, al l owi ng for a greater area for the bedroom wi th bal cony and provi di ng overhead s hade for the pati o. The Form The rear end has two frame-less glass panels that bring in a good amount of south daylight, an added benefit of north-south orientation. The facade is finished with clean concrete texture, and the glass marked by b l u e l a y e r e d c o n c r e t e ( a s p e r t h e c e l e b r i t y ’s love for blue) contrasting against the subtle one. The celebrity preferred a very clean geometric form that opened up to Jumeirah road, with stunning views toward the beach.

Prior to working on the form & function integration, I had a few quick looks at certain case-study examples, like the Alexander Dawson School in the US, with similar conceptual ideas of a bold entrance feature to symbolize the idea of ‘welcoming,’ and the idea of s o l i d v s c l e a r.

Design Concept The i dea for s pace pl anni ng and des i gn was to be kept s i m pl e, not com pl i cati ng the young chi l dren’s m i nds when us i ng the faci l i ty. For a s chool to s erve as pl ace of l ear ni ng and nurturi ng, there needs to be a s ens e of wel com i ng s o that s tudents feel i ns pi red at the s tart of the day. The i dea of wel com i ng them i nto a network i s where the concept takes off i nto an archi tectural trans l ati on as “a des i gn that i nvi tes us ers i nto a network of s i m pl e geom etry. ” By geom etry, I refer to the form and s pace that creates everythi ng.

The Form
The Materials
The design incorporates a simple, geometric form to complement its functions. The rigidly defined spaces outline the form with other hierarchal spaces popping in & out as clusters to c r e a t e d e p t h o n t h e b u i l d i n g ’s e l e v a t i o n s .
The design involves a dominant use of smooth finished concrete, in subtle white color to match the hot climatic condition here. The colors blue, red, grey and black seem to add a contrast to white and also represent the theme for this British school.
The compact form allows for a courtyard s p a c e t h a t s u s e d a s i n f a n t ’s p l a y a r e a , and other outdoor play area and sports pitch that seems to slice in the centre from the west side elevation.
The entrances and exit blocks are layered w i t h c o r r u g a t e d s h e e t m e t a l i n b l u e , re d a n d grey colors (at different areas) bringing out contrast and adding variety to the choice of materials.

M a s t e r- p l a n C o n c e p t The Arts, represented through t h e 3 e l e m e n t s o f n a t u r e – A i r, L a n d , Wa t e r. Art is about experiences felt everyday; so are the elements of nature. The 3 elements f o r m a s e n s e o f u n i t y. S i n c e the diverse range of human activities define Art, this can express an aesthetic variety offered to people in a creative lifestyle. When nature is involved in any design concept, it doesn’t mean employing free-flowing, organic elements is a must. Art is abstract – so to complement this, the elements of nature would follow the similar simple idea of abstraction and clear g e o m e t r y. By narrowing down abstract nature to Arts, we kind of move away from the conventional idea of expressing it through opposites (organic vs geometric). The Arts District Components Located wi thi n the D owntown, acros s the Burj Khalifa, the Arts District benefits from stunning vi ews , a boardwal k that runs al ong the edge and the m ai n boul evard s treet. The Central P l aza, encom pas s ed by the 3 bui l di ngs , i s an outdoor area that bri ngs the functi ons out i n connecti on wi th the l ake and i ts s urroundi ngs and s erves as an addi ti onal perform ance area at s peci al events . Exterior Lighting The perforated concrete panels radiate different colored lights from fixtures behind its shell. The adjacent water feature then serves as an active canvas when the building, at night-time, reflects its colorful elevation onto the wavy surface o f t h e w a t e r.

Secondary Hall The Secondary Hall has a seating capacity of about 170 people, to be used as an extended performing space apart from the Main Performance Hall. The walls are finished with laminated wood planks with lighting embedded behind. The front seating and stage area are illuminated with lighting color similar to the one on th exterior elevation - to indicate the inside-out integration.

C u r r e n t l y, t h e r e i s o n l y o n e n o d e - T h e Metro station, that exists on the entire linear site, giving me the opportunity to add other at intermediate points. With the very less active functions, the boardwalk seems dead.

Portal Form Development The design process begins with visualizing the portal as 3-dimensional form with multiple concentric ribs to create a tunnel-like passage. Starting off from an organic form, the process shapes into a more geometric form and cut open to create cross circulation. The roof and floors were supposed to symbolize the enclosure along the two horizontal planes that correspond to the opening vertical planes along the sides. Having the roof extend to form the wall and ribs, we created a unified structure, and to strengthen this, the lounge and seating areas are carved into the p o r t a l ’s r i b s .

The ri bs are vers ati l e and can be rem oved, reduced or rearranged for di fferent functi ons and us ers al l owi ng fl ex i bi l i ty i n other future us es .

Spatial Use The stand provides a lounge, 3 meeting areas, technical & storage space and a reception desk. There is an additional digital interactive function incorporated into the central circulation, located the end of the portal movement, to serve as a focal feature at the end. The structure functions as an entire piece yet parts can be taken out to adapt to different functions, environments & users at different times. This creates a functionally & aesthetically pleasing structure that symbolizes Canada and t h e u n i v e r s i t y.
