College Creek, situated within the Iowa State University campus, extends through commercial blocks and the ISU Arboretum. During the Industrial period, College Creek was concealed beneath the surface, remaining hidden for an extended period until the emergence of the innovative concept of “daylighting creek.” Functioning as a crucial watershed with diverse habitat values, College Creek became the focal point of this project, emphasizing the ecological advantages associated with daylighting the creek. The proposal suggests the use of natural limestone native to Iowa as both a veneer layer and a construction material along the edges, providing a natural resemblance to the landscape of Iowa Falls Swinging Bridge area. Incorporating public interaction programs such as seating areas, fishing spots, water play zones, nature walks, pedestrian bridges, canopy spaces, and accessibility for pedestrians, the project also brings forth ecological benefits, including fish ladders, fish pools, fish nesting areas, and natural habitats for birds and fishes. Beneath a canopy-shaped structure, a water storage cistern collects rainwater, contributing to plant watering during hot summer days. The envisioned design highlights the other segment of the creek that traverses the Arboretum area, contributing to the creation of a serene green nature corridor in the city of Ames, Iowa.

STORM WATER CALCULATION

The location is situated in Boone, Iowa, renowned for its significant railway history. The adjacent land use includes a residential neighborhood to the north and light industrial activities to the south, creating a mix of residential and light industrial zones on the site. Snow from the roads is deposited on the east side, while Story Street, the primary city center activity, is positioned on the west side. Additionally, a trolley track traverses through the site. The entire site is divided into four watersheds, demarcated not by the natural topographic ridge line but by roads labeled as WSZ 1, WSZ 2, WSZ 3, and WSD 4. The lowest point on the site is along 10th street, between WSZ 2 and WSZ 3, causing runoff water from the site to converge diagonally towards 10th street. Notably, the eastern snow dumping area exhibits a significant elevation change on its North and East side, adjacent to the rail track running through the site. WSZ 1 and 2 encompass a light industrial area, while WSZ 3 is comparatively larger, featuring extensive hard pavements and compacted soil. WSZ 4, a small area in the northeast corner, is covered with sparse grass. In the design proposal, there is a storage cistern in WSZ 1, positioned beneath a catch basin adorned with native vegetation. Within the entire community garden, a boardwalk is constructed on a gravel bed, enabling water to flow beneath it towards the underground cistern In case of overflow, excess water is directed to the city water drainage system. The property owner aims to utilize the stored water for watering trees and plants on hot summer days.

ILLUSTRATOR

The Midsommar spring park is located at the very urban core of the city of Des Moines, integrated within the commercial and mixed-use belt of the urban fabric. The rudimentary idea for the beginning of the design was to survive against the extreme heat, heatwave and we can collect water from heavy rainfall which is projected to be 40 years from now. So, in order to fight against that we need to harvest the rainwater and use it for the park water infrastructure and the trees. The main features of the park are the mystery islands, inspired by Henri Matisse park. The islands are inaccessible and one might wonder what’s up in there! And then, there is a beach between the two islands, right against the giant elevated earth blocks, and a fountain that collects the water and drains the water underground for harvesting. The beach zone has a water splash zone, which provides mist on hot summer days. The pedestrian connection was developed on Rhino- Grasshopper-Physarealm where the simulations generate the effective shortest paths for the destinations. The solar radiant analysis shows the extreme heat island on the south side of the site. I planted Evergreens on the North-West corner to cut off the cold air in the winter and big canopy trees like Elm and Catalpa at the centers while transparent trees like Honeylocust, Aspen, and Tulip Poplar at the edges. There are two types of pathways – a dedicated lakeside walk and the shared trail loop around the island. The shared path is kind of like an adventure where one can really experience the mounds, rock climbing activities, the beach, and the fountain at the same time.

PHOTOSHOP The lakeside walk takes one to the silo at the willow gateway, where Silo singing can be experienced in the summer or spring and Silo ice climbing in the winter. The children’s zone has slides and mound tunnels, the parents can watch over them while resting on the mound slopes under a tree canopy. The park was designed with no stairs so that it ensures accessibility to everyone regardless of age, physical issue, or other things. Half of the site has an underground parking space under it which was considered seriously while designing. The shallow waterbody was laid upon the slab and just flat green lawns mostly. The North- East sidewalk was accompanied by giant Weeping Willow trees as a buffer between the road and the park, which provides a canopy and a sense of being in the plaza area, right by the Gigantic Silo over there. The park offers different activities around the year depending on the season and different vibrance of plants as well. The water management system was designed to fight against the heat and drought or watering issues for the big tree canopies. The “Midsommar Spring” certainly provides ample amenities and recreational values to the urban people in this specific urban context.
