NOBODY TALKS ABOUT A BORING PRACTICE The marketing philosopher guru Seth Godin believes that if people aren’t talking about your business, there is a reason. That reason is you are boring, according to the author of such books as The Dip and Purple Cow. Godin believes companies fail to create a buzz when they stick to what they perceive as the safe options. Such companies have ‘safe’ prices and products and even a ‘safe’ location because they think this is what the market wants, according to Godin. Nobody talks about boring people or products, and boring companies are hard to refer. The author and business speaker Scott Ginsberg does not suffer from the problem of being boring. He gets talked about all the time. On first appearances, he looks like any other guy, except perhaps a bit scruffier. Yet people, strangers are always approaching him everywhere he goes. Ginsberg has made a successful business out of doing just one thing – wearing a name tag every day, all day, constantly for about eight years. According to Ginsberg, originally he went to a college social event where everybody was obliged to wear a name tag. Afterwards, he forgot to take it off as he carried on with is affairs. Ginsberg noticed that the simple name tag simultaneously made him stand out, get more attention and become more approachable. This made him decide to keep wearing the name tag and make it the core element of his personal branding. Now a days Ginsberg is an in-demand speaker on approachability. Indeed, he has written eight books on the subject. He is excellent at what he does, and that is why people seek out his services. However, Ginsberg’s real secret weapon is the name tag. People cannot stop talking about his commitment keep wearing it for the rest of his life. Ginsberg has in effect found a way to stand out from the crowd of other professional business speakers and at the same time get himself talked about.
