Grateful for Life-Changing Care Jesse Madison was born with isodicentric chromosome 15 syndrome, also known as idic(15), a

chromosome abnormality that affects different parts of the body and varies in severity and symptoms from person to person. Jesse was diagnosed with nonverbal autism and has uncontrolled epileptic seizures due to idic(15). Because of the complexity of his needs, Jesse has received care in a hospital setting for most of his life.

When Jesse started to age out of receiving pediatric care, his mom, Adelle, was nervous about transitioning his care to a new healthcare system. “Jesse has very complex needs, and I wanted to be sure he would receive compassionate care,” Adelle says. Jesse was referred to the Summa Health Complex Care Clinic by Dr. William D. Smucker. Dr. Smucker went to great lengths to ensure Jesse became an established patient and had a care plan.

neurologist and medical director of the Summa Health Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.

This experience helped Adelle feel a sense of peace regarding the care Jesse would receive at Summa Health. “The transition from pediatric care to adult care was easier because everyone worked together and communicated about Jesse’s needs and medical history – it was truly a multidisciplinary approach that made it seamless.”

At first, Adelle was apprehensive about the surgery. However, after doing her own research, she concluded that Summa Health had the best technology and treatment option for Jesse.

Once a patient at the Complex Care Clinic, Jesse was referred to Dr. Marvin A. Rossi, epilepsy 4

Vitality Magazine I Fall 2023 I Issue 3

When Dr. Rossi learned about Jesse’s uncontrolled epileptic seizures, he recommended that Jesse was a strong candidate for a vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) device implant that sends regular, mild electrical signals through the vagal nerve to help calm irregular electrical brain activity that leads to seizures.

“I felt like I was truly a part of Jesse’s care team,” Adelle says. “Dr. Rossi answered my questions, valued my input and validated my concerns.”

In August 2022, Jesse received an implant of the VNS device. After the successful procedure, Jesse was monitored in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit by Dr. Rossi and technicians to confirm everything went according to plan. Since the surgery, Jesse’s quality of life has significantly improved. While he still experiences some seizures, they are much more manageable. He has more energy, is more focused and can actively participate in life. “I am so grateful to Jesse’s care team at Summa; they are so wonderful and caring,” Adelle says. “Dr. Rossi is an amazing doctor and an even better person. He is so present with Jesse, sees him as a human being who has worth and value, and has changed our lives for the better.”

Marvin A. Rossi, M.D., Ph.D. Epilepsy Neurology

Getting to the Heart of Vascular Care Vascular disease affects the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients throughout your body and remove waste from your tissues. It can range from diseases of your arteries, veins and lymph vessels to blood disorders that affect circulation. Summa Health vascular surgeons are highly trained to treat diseases of the vascular system. We make sure patients know and understand all their options, from medical management to the surgical repair of diseased blood vessels. Most common vascular procedures: • Carotid artery surgery Treats issues with the carotid artery, the main blood supply to your brain. Surgical options range from open to minimally invasive. • Aortic aneurysm repair Repairs an abnormal enlargement of the abdominal aorta, usually due to weakness or degeneration that develops in a portion of the artery wall. • Lower extremity revascularization Restores adequate blood supply to the lower extremities by clearing a blockage or finding a way for blood to go around the blockage. We offer the latest surgical and minimally invasive options to treat this problem. If you have concerns, go to summahealth.org/vascular and take the Summa Health Vascular Disease Risk Assessment. Or call our vascular specialists directly at 877.202.6164 (Akron) or 877.203.7485 (Barberton).

What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm screening?

• An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) screening looks for aneurysms, or bulges in the aorta. • Most common screening is an abdominal ultrasound – an imaging test that uses sound waves to see inside the abdominal area. • Early diagnosis greatly reduces the chance of AAA causing serious problems. • If an AAA ruptures, the bleeding can quickly lead to death. • Recommended for people who: • Have or had a parent or sibling with aortic aneurysm • Smoke or used to smoke • Suffer from hypertension or COPD • Patients with an AAA are followed with testing every 6-12 months.

Importance of

Lung Cancer Screening Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States1. This is why screening is important, as it can decrease lung cancer deaths by 14 to 20 percent among high-risk populations2. Lung cancer screening is performed through a low-dose CT scan that can help detect cancer in earlier stages when it has the best chance of being successfully treated. Are between 50 and 80 years old

You are considered high-risk and eligible to be screened for lung cancer if you fit into all of the following categories:

Currently smoke or have quit in the past 15 years Have at least a 20 pack-year smoking history • For example: • 1 pack per day x 20 years = 20 pack years • 2 packs per day x 10 years = 20 pack years Are asymptomatic

For more information about getting screened, please call the Summa Health Lung Nodule Clinic 877.203.7466 or visit summahealth.org/lungscreening. https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/lung-cancer/about/key-statistics https://www.lung.org/lung-health-diseases/lung-disease-lookup/lung-cancer/resource-library/lung-cancer-fact-sheet

To anyone with shoulder pain, I would say don’t wait two years like I did. –T im Hart, Orthopedic Surgery Patient

Don’t Shoulder the Burden of Pain A highly skilled general contractor, Tim Hart has worked in drywall for 25 years. Over the past few years, however, he noticed a constant strain and pain in his right shoulder. The pain got so intense, he could no longer function in his daily activities.

Tim’s primary care provider referred him to Dr. Ryan Urchek, an orthopedic sports medicine surgeon at Summa Health. After a thorough exam and initial round of physical therapy, Dr. Urchek recommended a surgical procedure called a bicep tenodesis.

Ryan Urchek, M.D. Orthopedic Sports Medicine

“Biceps tenodesis is a common procedure,” explains Dr. Urchek, “which involves removing a damaged part of the biceps tendon, usually torn or inflamed, and reconnecting it to another part of the shoulder.” Tim easily recalls how Dr. Urchek was very informative, listened to him and always paused to answer any questions. “Dr. Urchek was amazing,” says Tim. “Every time I talked to him, I felt like I was heard, like he understood my concerns. And I also felt like he had the competence to do what he felt was best as my surgeon.” 12

Vitality Magazine I Fall 2023 I Issue 3

Ideal candidates for biceps tenodesis have significant biceps tendon symptoms and inflammation in which nonsurgical therapies – such as rest, medications, physical therapy and injections – have not been able to provide relief. The primary advantage of biceps tenodesis versus similar procedures is that it can help avoid a bulging bicep appearance after the biceps tendon is released from its attachment in the shoulder joint. “Ideal patients are younger and active people who want to avoid a cosmetic deformity and are willing to go through the post-op rehabilitation,” says Dr. Urchek. The procedure proved extremely successful for Tim. “Eight weeks post-op I was swimming again, overhand, and I hadn’t been able to do that for six or eight years.” At just 10 weeks, Tim was back to hanging drywall and, in 11 weeks, he felt like he had full strength and range of motion in his shoulder again. “To anyone with shoulder pain, I would say don’t wait two years like I did. Go to Summa Orthopedics and at least get it checked out.”
