01.UPS Hub location: New York, U.S. Group Work/2019 fall/Instructor: Ali Rahim This studio's topic is UPS hub. It will explore design techniques, the history of New York Cities architecture and combine it with an understanding of global capital markets to develop a new Headquarter/ Distribution Center Hub for New York City. The site is on the corner of Washington Street and Houston Street in West SoHo. We are designing a project with three programs, a distribution network that houses trucks, UPS offices and a prototyping space that can turn around working prototypes fast. developing a new hybrid typology for UPS and New York City. The existing UPS hub is uniquely equipped to speculate on the future of the network Hub into a precise and novel architecture and urban proposal that are unprecedented that links local efficiency with global demands. Team roles: research, design, model, create drawings.

Concept The goal is to build an office space that can be used by people as well as machinery and logistics systems. The main concept of this project is the studies of the interlocking space. It not only creates an interlocking space created by the floor plates but also interlocks in multi-directions. While the programs are mainly defined as logistic space and office, this form of space allow each program to have its own autonomous function. Several designed logistic pieces are nesting into the space to create connection in between the space. The faรงade is designed as a double layer glass system which allows different types of glass panel (transparent, translucent, opaque) to be installed. Glass type would be defined by the program type which allow the most efficient lighting and shading. In order to support the faรงade system, inhabitable trusses are installed as the main structure system.

For the site strategy, three similar interlocking chunks are connected by the truss system and the nesting logistic pieces. The human space and non-human space are evaluated equally in this UPS hub. The interaction between human and the logistic system has changed the way we perceive scale. Human interacting with automated system should be redefined in this project.

Office space is nested within the logistics system.A double glazed facade lets in the sun. Sunlight enters the office through the external logistics system which could provide a special lighting effect. Each part has its own independent logistics system and truck unloading point. While each part is relatively independent, it also colludes with each other.

02.Andy Warhol Museum location: Tokyo, Japan Group Work/2020 spring/Instructor: Hina Jamelle The main concept of our project is the development of techniques for the forces of compression, stretch, and tension. We studied how these forces from the geometry of the pop artwork and its relationship to these perceived forces. Within Takashi Murakami’s artwork, we analyzed the character of the lines and color fields. From this, we developed a series of techniques to control curvilinear geometry. Geometric techniques of compression, stretch, and tension were developed into architectural techniques. From the façade to the interior, the strategy varies from 2D, 2.5D to 3D techniques. The tension technique is mainly used as line cutting through the facade and as openings for windows. The concepts of stretch and compression have been used to link the façade to the interior geometry through “suction” techniques. On the interior, surface tension has been used to connect geometry from the façade and roofs to interior spaces. By doing this, we create a novel spatial experience in the pop art museum. Team roles: research, diagram, design, model, create drawings, create renderings.

Design research model
Within Takashi Murakami’s artwork, we analyzed the character of the lines and color fields. We studied how the forces of compression/stretch/tension from the geometry of the pop artwork and its relationship to these perceived forces.
The main concept of our project is compression/stretch/tension. It comes from the study of our selected art works. In the diagram, we studied how these forces forms the geometry of the artwork and the relationship of these forces. Therefore, we keep focusing on these forces and try to create strategies for our building. We apply different ways to deal with compression/stretch/tension. From the façade to the interior, the strategy varies from 2D, 2.5D to 3D techniques. The tension technique is mainly used as line cutting and escalators. The technique for stretch and compression mainly applies on the suction parts where we could see how these forces work with each other and distort surfaces and original geometry. By doing this, we would like to create a special experience in this pop art museum. What’s more, the context is also taken into consideration, we also make the suction parts as windows that could capture views of the Imperial garden.

Section On the interior, surface tension has been used to connect geometry from the faรงade and roofs to interior spaces. There is a roof garden on the top part. People who visit this museum would see the beautiful views of the Imperial garden from the suctions and openings.
After taking the escalater, they would then come to this roof garden. While viewing the secenery of the Imperial garden, people will also experience the fantastic green space on the roof. There are also exhibitions held in the roof garden. By doing this, we create a novel spatial experience in the pop art museum.
Perspective
The site is located at Ginza, Japan, and beside it is the Imperial garden. The suction and openings on the facade allow for different views. 10
The context is of primary importance in the project. The tensioned surfaces connect to the faรงade to frame gallery and public space views of the Imperial gardens, Hibiya park, and the Tokyo skyline beyond. The interconnected public spaces culminate in a rooftop garden that expounds upon the abundant green spaces in the area. 11
Interior
Plans
The plans of this museum are also consistent with our concept. They are majorly composed of general gallery spaces and spaces for services and offices. For the general gallery part, there are sunctions on the floor, working as artiums. There are line drawings on the floor. The tension lines also work as a guidence, illustrating the circulation for people. The sunctions on the facade also interact with interoir spaces.

03.Art-prison location: Favignana, Italy Individual Work/2018 spring In today's world, many historical remains are in a depressing situation. The culture meaning of these old buildings will be ignored if they are always vacant, having no actual connections with this city's contemporary culture. However, this kind of architectures should become a story teller, representing the history of the city. This project is lacated at Favignana. It is a renovation of an abandoned castle. This castle was used as a prision before. It onws many enriched stories. Therefore, this project focuses on how to exposed this castle's old spaces to the citizens and how to make this building become a storyteller to show the cities' history, combining newness and history at the same time.

Original spaces
The castle of Santa Caterina and The castle of San Giacomo are two of the oldest castle here. Both of them were used as prison in the past time.
The castle of Santa Caterina is composed of many small vaulted spaces. Several stairs and a court yard connect them. There are two entrance of this castle. The first entrance is at the first floor. It leads people to the 3 small spaces with low story height. The second one is in the front of the castle, forming the most major trasport space in this caslte with the court yard. All the small rooms are about 2 to 3 meters height.

Cutting History The Castle of Saint Catherine was obtained by enlarging a pre-existing tower. At the end of 1400 the Lord of Favignana Andrea Riccio rebuilt the Castle of Saint Catherine in its current form that we know today. During the revolt of 1860, the Castle of Saint Catherine was looted and devastated and now lives in a complete state of disrepair.During the Second World War it was requisitioned by the Navy.

Trying to discuss the possibilities of future stategy, this project especially focuses on the rising of sea level. Expecting to find a possible design solution for citizens to survive int the severe condition. This project's site is at Dalian, Liaoning. Dalian is in the south of Liaotung peninsula, the second largest peninsula in China. Locating in a vaelly, this city is one of the most dangerous cities facing this threaten. Thus, creating living spaces on water will soon become a need to survive. This projest tries to form a Utopia floating o n t h e wate r. C o n s i d e r i n g t h e l a c k o f transportation, a minimized city is created in this floating building. A possible model of living on water is discussed in this design.

Site This project's site is located in Dalian's Gangwan square. This square is at the sea side, serving as an entrance of the city. When the water level rises, this square is the first place to be overwhelmed. There are multiple kinds of buildings in this area, including historical remains, commercial center and residential buildings. The spaces of cities will continue to change during the process of being submerged.
