01.UPS Hub location: New York, U.S. Group Work/2019 fall/Instructor: Ali Rahim This studio's topic is UPS hub. It will explore design techniques, the history of New York Cities architecture and combine it with an understanding of global capital markets to develop a new Headquarter/ Distribution Center Hub for New York City. The site is on the corner of Washington Street and Houston Street in West SoHo. We are designing a project with three programs, a distribution network that houses trucks, UPS offices and a prototyping space that can turn around working prototypes fast. developing a new hybrid typology for UPS and New York City. The existing UPS hub is uniquely equipped to speculate on the future of the network Hub into a precise and novel architecture and urban proposal that are unprecedented that links local efficiency with global demands.

Concept The goal is to build an office space that can be used by people as well as machinery and logistics systems. The main concept of this project is the studies of the interlocking space. It not only creates an interlocking space created by the floor plates but also interlocks in multi-directions. While the programs are mainly defined as logistic space and office, this form of space allow each program to have its own autonomous function. Several designed logistic pieces are nesting into the space to create connection in between the space. The faรงade is designed as a double layer glass system which allows different types of glass panel (transparent, translucent, opaque) to be installed. Glass type would be defined by the program type which allow the most efficient lighting and shading. In order to support the faรงade system, inhabitable trusses are installed as the main structure system.

For the site strategy, three similar interlocking chunks are connected by the truss system and the nesting logistic pieces. The human space and non-human space are evaluated equally in this UPS hub. The interaction between human and the logistic system has changed the way we perceive scale. Human interacting with automated system should be redefined in this project.
Office space is nested within the logistics system.A double glazed facade lets in the sun. Sunlight enters the office through the external logistics system which could provide a special lighting effect. Each part has its own independent logistics system and truck unloading point. While each part is relatively independent, it also colludes with each other.

02.Teamakers house location: Riga, Latvia Individual Work/2018 fall Ozolini farm is located in latvia. And this farm had been abandoned until 1977, when Brigita started lauku tea here. Lauku tea has been the most famous tea around the Europe since then. They insist of using the traditional way to produce tea. The site is surrounded with forest. The natural environment is also a vital concern. This house is built for teamakers to make tea and receive guests. The spaces and circulation of this house is designed based on a researh of their tea making process. Moreover, the relationship of different people's routes is also important and worth discussing. In this house, there are two routines prepared for teamakers and the tourist visiting here. The relationship between nature, tea peoducing process and the guests is the major focus of this design.

Producing process Ozolini farm
Ozolini farm is located in latvia. In 1977, Brigita discovered the abandoned Ozolini farm and started Lauku Tea. Then Lauku Tea was given European Union Organic certification in 1999, and was chosen to be the tea served to the Queen of England. For a long time, Lauku Tea has been produced in this farm and transport to other countries in the Europe.
Given their traditional way of hand makde tea production, the major processes have six parts. There are two different routines for two types of tea. Withering, frying, rolling, drying, packaging for green tea. Withering, rolling, ferment, drying, packaging for black tea.

Brigita holds dear the traditional methods of making tea while creating new opportunities for Ozolini, like hosting international workshares and self-care retreats for women on the farm. A new house for mutiple use is needed now.
Each single building is divided into 4 parts. The top two floors are prepared for the teamakers to produce tea. Every building is arrenged with certain tea making process. On the top floor, every building is connected by bridges so that tea makers could pass their work to the next step. For the gusets, the underground floor is built for them to buy, drink tea and visit exhibition about tea making. The two kinds of people could meet at the middle floor, dinking tea together.

Trying to discuss the possibilities of future stategy, this project especially focuses on the rising of sea level. Expecting to find a possible design solution for citizens to survive int the severe condition. This project's site is at Dalian, Liaoning. Dalian is in the south of Liaotung peninsula, the second largest peninsula in China. Locating in a vaelly, this city is one of the most dangerous cities facing this threaten. Thus, creating living spaces on water will soon become a need to survive. This projest tries to form a Utopia floating o n t h e wate r. C o n s i d e r i n g t h e l a c k o f transportation, a minimized city is created in this floating building. A possible model of living on water is discussed in this design.

Parasitism Living spaces play an important role in people's life. The arpartment for people will be classified for different needs and formed by the structure. This building remains the path way to the spaces above the water in those old buildings. This will promise commuters with the most convenient way to work.
Due to global warming, one of the most difficult p ro b l e m p e o p l e fa c e today is the rising sea level. Cities will be gradually overwhelmed.

04.Art-prison location: Favignana, Italy Individual Work/2018 spring In today's world, many historical remains are in a depressing situation. The culture meaning of these old buildings will be ignored if they are always vacant, having no actual connections with this city's contemporary culture. However, this kind of architectures should become a story teller, representing the history of the city. This project is lacated at Favignana. It is a renovation of an abandoned castle. This castle was used as a prision before. It onws many enriched stories. Therefore, this project focuses on how to exposed this castle's old spaces to the citizens and how to make this building become a storyteller to show the cities' history, combining newness and history at the same time.

05.Anti-library location: Kabuchiko, Tokyo, Japan Individual Work/2018 summer There is a severe phenomenon that few historical elements could been found in people's daily lives and the precious historical remains are just serving as tourist spots like isolated islands, leaving no actual connections with city’s contemporary culture. A huge gap exists between history, culture and today's cities. This project's site is located at kabuchiko district, the biggest red-light district of Asia. After the world war 2, Japanese government decided to named this district after kabuki, one of the most famous Japaness traditional drama, expecting that it could revive their traditional culture. However, this place damatically developed into a big red-light district. Hence, this project is focused on recalling the tradition back to today's city, trying to transform an old kabuki theater into a new form being fit in the existing context in the kabukicho.

Structure
This library is formed from the extracted elements of traditional kabuki theater. The transformed stage and auditorium are intended to evoke citizen's nostalgia for old memories.
Kabuchiko District
The site is located beside kabuchiko district, the biggest red-light district of Asia. What's more, this district is built to revive Japanese traditional culture by playing kabuki, the most important conventional drama in Japan, in this district. It is so tricky that today there is no kabuki theater in this place and it finally becomes such a place so different from the one the government wanted it to be. 17
Function There are four different spaces in this library. Firstly, it serves as a library. On the lower floors, spaces are more open to public. On the upper floors, spaces gradually become private. Meanwhile, there are two theaters on the first and third floor, serving for the whole block, playing kabuki for the citizens. All these spaces and functions are connected by the stairs and elevators.

Plan
The stairs work as structure and are also used as transportantion. This stair connects several major spaces in this library, representing hanamichi in traditional kabuki theater. Wandering in this stairs could offer people a journey to wander in this building.
The extracted elements could also be read from plan. The grid and inclined stage hanamichi influence the space not only vertically. In lower floors, the spaces are more piblic. On the contrary, higher floors own better privacy.
