1 A rare Georgian carved sandstone panel of Izaac Walton late 18th century standing on the riverbank originally holding a fishing rod and net 170cm high by 98cm wide By repute, this rare carved stone plaque is believed to have been set in the wall of a public house close to the home of Izaac Walton, who was an English writer, best known as the author of The Compleat Angler written in 1653, a pastoral discourse on the joys and stratagems of fishing that has been one of the most frequently reprinted books in English literature. He also wrote a number of short biographies that have been collected under the title of Walton’s Lives. After the restoration of the monarchy in 1660, one of Walton’s Royalist friends, George Morley, was made bishop of Winchester and offered Walton residence in the bishop’s palace, where he stayed for the rest of his life and it is from a public house in the area that this plaque is reputed to have come from. His final personal revision (the fifth edition) of The Compleat Angler appeared in 1676 and included additional material written by his friend Charles Cotton. £4000-6000

2 A granite boulder with runic inscriptions 130cm high by 160cm wide by 110cm deep This substantial granite rock, imported from Norway over 30 years ago, originally formed part of the sea defences at Gorleston in Norfolk. In 2003, local archaeologists formed the opinion that the scratched runic symbols and intertwined serpents and dragon were over 2000 years old and historically very significant and rare. However, after the Great Yarmouth Mercury local newspaper reported the “potentially very important discovery”, jobless construction worker Barry Luxton, 50, saw the report and a photograph of the rock and recognised it as one that he had chiselled during an idle three days on the beach only 8 years earlier. The story was widely reported in the national press at the time. 4 A pair of carved Portland stone reclining lions mid 19th century one with paws resting over a lamb 56cm high by 120cm long ÂŁ2500-4000 Provenance; By repute Woodbastwick Hall, Norfolk. The house dates back to circa 1600. In 1807 the house and estates were acquired for ÂŁ76,000 from the trustees of

Thomas Allday Kerrison by John Barwell Cator (nephew of John Cator), who became High Sheriff of Kent in 1818. It then passed down the Cator family. After a fire in 1819, Cator commissioned architect George Smith to rebuild the hall. After another serious fire in December 1882, the house was substantially rebuilt to a design by Ewan Christian , and then used as a Red Cross auxiliary hospital during World War II and subsequently as an Agricultural Training College until it was demolished in 1971.

5 † An extremely rare Georgian circular lead cistern dated 1774 and initial ID with coat of arms, signs of the Zodiac, armorials and renaissance style romaine heads and with dolphin bronze tap, now with later internal overflow pipe 138cm high by 110cm diameter Circular lead cisterns are extremely rare compared to the more usual rectangular examples, which were made to be located against a wall often in an internal courtyard where they were connected to downpipes collecting water from the house’s roof. They were usually decorated on the front and sides and usually incorporate a bronze tap. Perhaps the most well-known circular example was made for the Earl of Plymouth at St Fagin’s Castle, Cardiff and is dated 1620 which is located on a stepped stone base between the main entrance to the Castle and the drive. This example with an elaborate bronze stylised dolphin tap would have been cast in a flat sand bed. The different elements of decoration would be in the form of carved wooden panels and wooden mouldings which would be pressed into the sand before the lead was poured. In many of the smaller individual panels of this cistern, there is the faint square outline of the edges of the wooden panel where it has been pressed into the sand. The moulded panels containing relief heads are typical of Renaissance and later decoration in panelled rooms. Once the lead had cooled after pouring, it would have been curved into a circle before the base was applied forming a cylinder. The coat of arms centred with the red hand of Ulster is probably that of the Chetwynd family. £5000-8000

19 ‡ Charles Sargeant Jagger (1885-1934): A pair of rare Portland stone groups of a nymph and satyr each in the form of a satyr carved with curly hair and cloven hooves squatting on a tapering square pedestal and leaning over a naked nymph, one with the nymph with flowing hair facing towards him and raising herself on tiptoe to offer a kiss, the other with the nymph leaning backwards the satyr grasping her arms and pulling her up towards his embrace 350cm high Provenance: Melchett Court, Hampshire, 1927; Alfred 1st Lord Melchett Colworth, Bedfordshire 1936; Henry 2nd Lord Melchett, Beale Park, Berkshire, 1948 Charles Sargeant Jagger was born at Kilnhurst, Yorkshire on 17th December 1885, the second child of Mary (née Sargeant) and Enoch Jagger, he had a younger brother David who later became a society portrait painter, and an older sister Edith, who also became a gifted painter. Their father was a colliery manager. In 1907 he was awarded a scholarship by West Riding county council to study at the Royal College of Art. Under Professor Lanteri he achieved considerable success including a major college travel bursary which enabled him to visit Italy and North Africa in 1911. In 1914 he was awarded the Prix de Rome, with a relief entitled Bacchanalian Scene. The romantic classical feeling of his work at this time was not to be repeated until the late 1920’s when the Melchett Court groups were commissioned. Before he could take up his scholarship in Rome war was declared and Jagger made a considerable personal sacrifice by renouncing it and instead enlisting in the Artists Rifles. In 1915 he sailed with the British Expeditionary Force to Gallipoli. In the most appalling conditions, he was eventually shot through the shoulder and shipped out to a hospital in Malta. He was subsequently posted to the Front in France and in April 1918 was badly wounded at the Battle of Neuve Église. In recognition of his valour he was awarded the Military cross. Whilst he was convalescing a friend at the Royal College of Art told him that the British War Memorials Committee

20

were about to employ sculptors. In 1919 Sir George Frampton (who had been on the panel judging the Rome scholarship) recommended him to design a memorial planned for Hoylake and West Kirby, Lancashire. This proved a turning point in his career, and between 1921 and 1923 he completed six war memorials and started on his most well-known work, the Royal Artillery memorial at Hyde Park Corner. All of these are characterized by the same brutal and grim, but also massively strong treatment of the soldiers or ‘Tommies’. His recorded comments on war memorials repeat the basic notion of ‘showing the Tommy as I knew him in the trenches’. There followed a number of other commissions both at home and abroad for the Imperial War Graves Commissions. By the second half of the 1920’s Jagger’s eminence as a sculptor had become established. The Royal Artillery Memorial had a somewhat mixed reception when it was unveiled in 1925, but nevertheless secured Jagger’s name as a public figure. In 1926 he became an associate of the Royal Academy and was awarded a medal by the Royal Society of British Sculptors. At this time Jagger also built up an influential circle of patrons, including Sir Edwin Lutyens, who also became a close friend, and Sir Stephen Courtauld, who commissioned two decorative plaques from him. He was also commissioned to do a statuette of H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. The Prince was known to have admired Jagger’s work and commissioned a cast of one of Jagger’s bronzes. ‘Wipers’ in 1921. This informal portrait of the Prince portrayed holding a tennis racquet was considered one of Jagger’s finest works and helped him avoid being stereotyped as a war memorial sculptor. It was also at this time that Jagger began his association with Sir Alfred Mond, the first Lord Melchett, and his son Henry. Sir Alfred served on the council of the British School at Rome from 1925, but already knew Jagger’s work. It is likely that they got to know each other as a result of the work Jagger did for the British War Memorials commission. Mond was heavily involved in setting up the Imperial War Museum which took over the commissions made by the B.W.M.C. at the end of 1918 and so probably saw Jagger’s work at that time. Certainly, from the early 1920’s the Mond family were active supporters of Jagger’s work and from this For details of our buyers premium which is added onto the hammer price together with any other applicable charges please refer to our guide for prospective buyers

21

association there emerged a close relationship between them. Charles Jagger and Henry Mond, who were almost the same age, were particularly close and the Jaggers often visited the Monds at their Hampshire home. Amongst the many commissions the Mond family gave Jagger, were the sculptures on Imperial Chemical House. This building, a well-known London landmark on the River Thames at Millbank, was designed by Sir Frank Baines to provide the central offices of I.C.I. when it was formed out of a merger between companies belonging to the Mond family and to Sir Harold McGowan in 1926. Jagger produced four massive sculptures typifying great industries of the world, Agriculture, Marine Transport, the Building Industry and Chemistry. At around the same time Jagger was commissioned by Lord Melchett to carve this pair of Portland stone groups of nymphs and satyrs for his home, Melchett Court, Hampshire. These form an important part of a small group of privately commissioned works on literary and classical themes. In a similar vein Jagger produced a relief based on Sheridan’s School for Scandal for Henry and Gwen Mond’s drawing room at Mulberry House, Smith Square, London. This features a man embracing a naked woman. Also, a pair of reliefs for Sir Stephen Courtauld circa 1930 feature a nymph and a satyr mocking an elderly satyr who is offering jewels to the young nymph. The Melchett Court satyrs and nymphs are the only known work by Jagger in which he explores this romantic classical approach with its mildly erotic overtones in a large-scale three-dimensional way. The salacious expression of the squatting and kneeling satyrs contrasts brilliantly with the yearning expressions of the nymphs with their languid nubile bodies. The gentle satire employed in these works is striking because of the contrast it makes with the serious subject matter of much of Jagger’s work. It reinforces the view that he felt no obligation to be predictable concerning the content of his work. The Courtauld reliefs and the Melchett Court nymphs and satyrs also reveal that Jagger’s romantic temperament, which is evident in this works prior to 1914, had not been entirely crushed by his experiences during the War. All the same, these later works are easily distinguishable from the earlier classical reliefs by their boldness and simplicity of form which is distinctly Art Deco. 22

Jagger died in November 1934 at the early age of 48. Between 1918 and 1934 Jagger produced some 45 works, most of which were war memorials or commissions for large buildings. These groups are amongst the most important of the private commissions which he undertook. Following his death these two groups were exhibited in the Charles Sargeant Jagger Memorial Exhibition at the Royal Society of Painters in watercolours in Pall Mall, on 21st May to 20th June 1934. The chairman was Lord Melchett. The exhibition list also includes small bronzes of the nymphs and satyrs priced at 25 guineas each, which presumably were maquettes for the full-size groups. Sadly, no price is given for these, however since they formed an integral part of Melchett Court it is doubtful whether they would have been for sale. A plaster maquette of one the groups was included in a sale Sotheby’s Sussex on 21st April 1998, lot 663. The sculptures were moved to Colworth, Bedfordshire by Henry, 2nd Lord Melchett in 1936. This house was subsequently sold to Unilever as a research centre in 1947 and the following year the statues and other works of art were disposed of in a house sale, and subsequently acquired by Gilbert Beale for Beale Park. Literature: Imperial War Museum, 1985, edited by Ann Compton Studio Magazine, Vol. 63, No.260, 14th November 1914. Charles Sargeant Jagger Memorial Exhibition catalogue, May/June 1935. 20 After Eneri Prosperi: A bronze group of five children each standing on stepping stones three with sculptor’s plaque stamped Bronze Elite by Henri, the other two stamped Leonardo Rossi the tallest 147cm, the smallest 101cm Eneri Prosperi was born in Bagni di Lucca in Tuscany in 1910 and later emigrated to America where he founded the Henri Studio in Chicago. Specialising in both composition stone and bronze they produced a wide range of garden sculpture. He died in 1990. This group made up of five individual bronzes would work very well spaced out in a lake or pond which would have been the sculptors original intention.

24

Although the identity of Leonardo Rossi is unknown, it is believed to be the pseudonym for a foundry copying other studio’s work. These bronzes would appear to have been cast 20-30 years ago and are of a similar quality to another identical group of bronze children by the Eneri Prosperi studio, sold by us, lot 15, 28th March 2017, hammer price £21,000 and a similar group sold by us, lot 25, 12th March 2019, hammer price £8500. £5000-8000

21 Lyudmila Konstantinouvna Strel Chenko: A bronze fountain of two boys circa 1980 with two scantily draped boys both dancing with arms held aloft, the shaped oval base drilled with a fountain jet 224cm high Lyudmila Konstantinouvna Strel ‘Chenko’ was born in 1941 in Bashkiriya (SouthWestern Russia). After entering the Kiev Arts Institute in 1960 her work proved controversial and was deemed non-socialist, however she still won the Institute competition in 1963. She graduated from the institute in 1965 exhibiting Young Man and the Sun at the show of graduation works. Other exhibitions and shows followed including: Exhibition of the works by Young Artists of Ukraine in 1966, The Memory Lenin’s 100th Anniversary Exhibition in 1971, The Portrait of Karpenko-Kary The Republican Exhibition of the works by Young Artists in 1974 - The All-Union Exhibition of small forms in 1978 -The Trio. 23 A huge M14 training rifle American, mid 20th century 44cm high by 220cm wide by 30cm deep Of enormous proportions, these rifles were made as “training guns” for troops. Rather than showing individuals how the rifle worked they were able to demonstrate the mechanism (assembling, disassembling, cleaning, firing, etc) of the rifle to entire halls of troops, hence the cutaway sections which show the recoil system, the bolt and the cartridge chamber.

This particular rifle is a US M14 .30 Calibre Rifle introduced in the 1950’s for the US army. It became the standard-issued rifle for the U.S. military in 1959 replacing the M1 Garand rifle in the U.S. Army by 1961 and the U.S. Marine Corps by 1965 until being replaced by the M16 rifle beginning in 1964. The M14 was used by U.S. Army, Navy, and Marine Corps for basic and advanced individual training (AIT) from the mid-1960’s to the early 1970’s. This demonstrator measures a massive 220cm in width and has been reconditioned and chromed. £6000-8000

Richardson, who had been manager of the Peterborough Canoe Company. Walter eventually became plant manager at RILCO, a position he held until 1967 when that company also closed its doors. As he had done many times before, driven by his passion to build boats, Walter moved on to Peel Marine in Lakefield where he built and repaired canoes until he retired in 1986. Many of the canoes Walker built at Peel Marine are treasured by their owners to this day; they are visible and distinctive at the various annual regattas in and around the Kawartha Lakes and farther afield. One such craft, built in 1977, was commissioned by the Village of Lakefield as a gift to HRH Prince Andrew, at the time a Lakefield College School student and now Patron of the Canadian Canoe Museum. That item is presently part of Royal Canoes exhibit at the Canadian Canoe Museum, on loan from its owner. ÂŁ800-1200

36 An early and rare Old Town wood and canvas canoe circa 1913 with two pairs of paddles and makers plaque Decal and with stamped number 27389 length 550cm; beam 90cm Old Town Canoe Company is a historic maker of canoes in Old Town, Maine. The company had its beginnings in 1898, in buildings constructed in 1890 for a shoe business, and was incorporated in 1901. Old Town entered the canoe market as a builder of canvas-covered wooden canoes. In the latter half of the 20th century, the company adopted more modern materials to maintain competitiveness. The company’s plant was located along the Penobscot River.

The first canoe built by Old Town Canoe was constructed in 1898 behind the Gray hardware store in Old Town, Maine. Unlike the pioneering canoe businesses established by E.H. Garrish, B.N. Morris, and E.M. White, the Grays were not canoe builders themselves, but were entrepreneurs who hired others to design and build their canoes. As it became more well established at the end of the 19th century, Old Town was incorporated in 1901 by brothers George and Samuel Gray, and was run as a family business for decades. Old Town is the largest and best known American canoe manufacturer. It was the leading manufacturer in the world before competitors such as Grumman pressured it by adopting aluminium for manufacture after World War II. It adjusted by moving to using fibreglass and plastic in the 1960’s. This early example bearing the serial number 27389 dates to around 1913. £800-1200

47 A blonde turtle shell (Podocnemis expansa) late 19th century now mounted as a lamp 87cm high overall by 57cm wide by 20cm deep These turtle shells were South American river turtles and would be captured to take on board the merchant ships of the 19th century. The turtles were then boiled (to make turtle soup) and eaten, with one turtle capable of feeding reputedly up to 100 sailors. However, the leftovers were not simply thrown overboard. Often a sailor would take the shell and polish it by hand giving it a glosswhite finish and sell it as an item of curiosity for a few shillings once docked at home which explains why most of them tend to turn up for sale in the northwest of England in the proximity of Liverpool, one of the busiest trading ports of the world at the time. GLOSSARY OF TERMS

In renaissance style

The following are examples of the terminology used in this catalogue. Any statement as to authorship, attribution, origin, date, age provenance and condition is a statement of opinion and is not to be taken as a statement of fact.

In our opinion a work executed in the style of the renaissance but not necessarily of that period.

Please read carefully the terms of the Authenticity Guarantee and the Conditions of Business for Buyers set out in this catalogue. Antonio Canova In our opinion a work by the artist. In the case of 19th century sculpture this indicates that the work was made in our opinion either by the artist or by a foundry or editor who had the rights to reproduce the artist’s original model either during the artist’s lifetime or for a defined posthumous period. (When the artist’s forenames are not known, a series of asterisks, followed by the surname of the artist, whether preceded by an initial or not indicates that in our opinion the work is by the artist named). Attributed to Antonio Canova In our opinion probably a work by the artist but less certainty as to authorship is expressed than in the preceding category. Manner of Antonio Canova In our opinion a work in the style of the artist and of a later date After Antonio Canova In our opinion a copy at a later date of a known work by the artist. In the 19th century this indicates that in our opinion the work was made by a foundry or editor at a later date and apparently without exclusive rights. Italian 18th century In our opinion a work from that region and of that date. Probably Italian 18th century In our opinion a work that is likely to be from that region and/or of that date but less certainty as to the region and/ or date than is expressed in the preceding category.

The term signed and/or dated and/or inscribed means that in our opinion the signature and/or date and/or inscription are original to the model or authorized by the sculptor’s studio or editor but not necessarily from the hand of the artist. The term bearing the signature and/or date and/or inscription means that in our opinion the signature and/ or date and/ or inscription have been added at a later date. Dimensions are given height before width Condition of lots Condition is only noted in the catalogue where an item is severely distressed. Prospective purchasers making commission bids without viewing the sale can be given condition reports on any lot on request. It is essential for buyers to satisfy themselves as to the condition of lots prior to the sale and to arrange their own insurance cover against loss and damage immediately after the sale. Please refer to the Conditions of Business for Buyers.

SUMMERS PLACE AUCTIONS AUTHENTICITY GUARANTEE If Summers Place Auctions Ltd sells an item which subsequently is shown to be a “counterfeit”, subject to the terms below Summers Place Auctions Ltd will set aside the sale and refund to the Buyer the total amount paid by the Buyer to Summers Place Auctions Ltd for the item, in the currency of the original sale. For these purposes, “counterfeit” means a lot that in Summers Place Auctions Ltd reasonable opinion is an imitation created to deceive as to authorship, origin, date, age, period, culture or source, where the correct description of such matters is not reflected by the description in the catalogue (taking into account any Glossary of Terms). No lot shall be considered a counterfeit by reason only of any damage and/ or restoration and/or modification work of any kind (including repainting or over-painting). Please note that this Guarantee does not apply if either:(i) the catalogue description was in accordance with the generally accepted opinion(s) of scholar(s) and expert(s) at the date of the sale, or the catalogue description indicated that there was a conflict of such opinions; or (ii) the only method of establishing at the date of the sale that the item was a counterfeit would have been by means of processes not then generally available or accepted, unreasonably expensive or impractical to use; or likely to have caused damage to the lot or likely (in Summers Place Auctions Ltd reasonable opinion) to have caused loss of value to the lot; or (iii) there has been no material loss in value of the lot from its value had it been in accordance with its description. This Guarantee is provided for a period of five (5) years after the date of the relevant auction, is solely for the benefit of the Buyer and may not be transferred to any third party. To be able to claim under this Guarantee, the Buyer must:(i) notify Summers Place Auctions Ltd in writing within three (3) months of receiving any information that causes the Buyer to question the authenticity or attribution of the item, specifying the lot number, date of the auction at

72

which it was purchased and the reasons why it is thought to be counterfeit; and (ii) return the item to Summers Place Auctions Ltd in the same condition as at the date of sale to the Buyer and be able to transfer good title in the item, free from any third party claims arising after the date of the sale. Summers Place Auctions Ltd has discretion to waive any of the above requirements. Summers Place Auctions Ltd may require the Buyer to obtain at the Buyer’s cost the reports of two independent and recognised experts in the field, mutually acceptable to Summers Place Auctions Ltd and the Buyer. Summers Place Auctions Ltd shall not be bound by any reports produced by the Buyer, and reserves the right to seek additional expert advice at its own expense. In the event Summers Place Auctions Ltd decides to rescind the sale under this Guarantee, it may refund to the Buyer the reasonable costs of up to two mutually approved independent expert reports.

Sealed bid- How it works Our sealed bid auctions close at 4.oopm on the day after the

live auction, but are on view at the same time and are included in the same catalogue with an illustration, description and estimate. Clients wishing to leave bids should do so in writig or by emailing a signed scanned page detailing lot numbers, brief description and the bid(s) which they wish to leave. All clients should also have registered with us beforehand and provided photographic identification. Sealed bids, when placed by telephone, are accepted only at the the caller’s risk and must be confirmed by letter or e-mail to info@summersplaceauctions.com. You can also e-mail the completed sealed bid form to sealedbids@summersplaceauctions.com Next give us your bid(s). This can be done by filling in the bidding slip found in your catalogue. If you are sending your bidding slip to Summers Place Auctions by post, please mark the envelope “Sealed Bid” so that we know it contains a sealed bid and do not open it accidentally. Bids and IDs may also be sent by e-mail. If you choose to send the bid electronically please email sealedbids@summersplaceauctions.com. This is a closed mailbox and will not be opened before the advertised time. However, we strongly recommend that if you have not viewed the sale in person, that you ask for condition reports on any lots you are thinking of leaving bids on. Sealed bid auctions differ from established auctions in that the bid left is the bid that will be exercised in full. Therefore, if you decide to leave a bid of, say, £900 on the lot estimated at £800-1000 and there is no higher bid (where two identical bids are received, the earliest received bid will take precedence), £900 will secure the lot subject to buyer’s premium and VAT on the premium. We will contact you if you have been the successful bidder to inform you of the lot or lots that you have purchased, so that you can make payment and make arrangements for delivery. We have had many years of experience dealing with both UK carriers and international shippers and are happy to obtain quotations and facilitate transport and shipping of single lots and multiple purchases to anywhere in the world. Bids will be opened on Thursday 3rd October; and sales results will appear on the Summers Place Auctions website. Please be mindful that we will have to process a large number of bids, which does take time. However, we will endeavour to get this accomplished as quickly as possible and will expect to have the results of the sale posted by the end of the day. If you have never bid in a sealed bid sale before, here are some things to be aware of as regards leaving bids for this auction: Every lot in the sale has a fixed reserve, (the minimum price for which the lot can be sold) and this is never above the low estimate, it can be slightly below, but in the vast majority of cases it is the low estimate. The highest bid (as long as it is on or above the reserve) will be the winning bid. This is the ‘hammer price’ that the lot will be sold for. You should consider leaving a bid of an odd amount in pounds, for example, rather that bidding £1,000, try say £1,004, as many lots have been bought for the sake of the odd £1! You can tailor your bid in ways that are impossible to do in a live auction. For example, if you really like three lots, but only need one, and the piece you like the most is later in the sale, simply mark your order of preference. As long as your instructions are clear, having looked at any other bids left on the lots, we will do our best to comply with your preferences. In the event of two identically highest bids, the earliest bid received will take precedence. An auction price is made up of different components; the winning bid is called the ‘hammer price’; A commission, which is in addition to the ‘hammer price’ is payable to the auctioneers. This is known as the buyers premium, on which VAT is payable. Lots marked with  are subject to Artist Resale Right (ARR), which is 4% of the “hammer price”. All lots that have additional VAT are clearly marked in the catalogue with a †.

Sealed bid auction Lots 200-503 All sealed bids must be with us, at the latest by 4pm BST on the 2nd October since the bids will be opened on the 3rd October. The winning bid will be the highest left on each lot above the reserve. Bids are non sequential and the highest bid left is the price at which the lot is sold plus buyers premium and any VAT liable. In the event of two identical winning bids being left on the same lot, the earliest received bid shall take precedence. Summers Place Auctions decision on which is the winning bid shall be final. Winning bidders will be invoiced after the bids are opened. For further information on sealed bids and how they work see our conditions of business.

215 A rare ecclesiastical bronze floor grille late 19th century 270cm long by 78cm wide Provenance: Removed from St John the Baptist Church, Norwich, now the Roman Catholic cathedral. The cathedral was constructed between 1882 and 1910 as a parish church dedicated to John the Baptist, on the site of the Norwich City Gaol. The funds for its construction were provided by Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk. He funded it as a generous gift to the Catholics of Norwich as a sign of

thanksgiving for his first marriage to Lady Flora Abney-Hastings. In 1976, it was consecrated as the cathedral church for the newly erected Diocese of East Anglia and the seat of the Bishop of East Anglia. Built in early English gothic style, the architect was George Gilbert Scott Jr, 1839 -1897, known in later life as ‘Middle Scott’. He was the eldest son of Sir George Gilbert Scott, and father of Sir Giles Gilbert Scott and Adrian Gilbert Scott, all also renowned architects. During the 1860s and 1870s he worked for his father in his architectural practice before founding

Watts and Company in 1874 along with two other leading 19th century architects: George Frederick Bodley (the architect of Washington National Cathedral) and Thomas Garner. He was also responsible for buildings in three of the University of Cambridge’s colleges: Christ’s, Pembroke and Peterhouse. He masterminded the main buildings of Dulwich College in South London. Some of his finest works, the churches of All Hallows, Southwark (1877), and St Agnes, Kennington (1880) were destroyed by Second World War bombing.

Often overshadowed by both his father, who had the largest and most prestigious architectural practice in the country, the last years of his life were marred by mental instability and excessive drinking. He died in the Midland Grand Hotel, St Pancras, a building designed by his father, of cirrhosis of the liver. £4000-6000 For more images please see our website

216 An important aluminium frieze designed by J.A. Halliday and sculpted by Philip Bentham, commissioned for the Clydesdale Bank, Lombard street London, circa 1963 comprising seven panels 148cm high by 18.79 metres overall £40,000-60,000 This impressive aluminium frieze is a wonderfully comprehensive pictorial record of Scotland’s rich history incorporating all

86

aspects of Scottish life and identity. Although it was conceived as a running frieze, at first floor level, on the outside of the bank, there is no chronological order and each individual panel is a stand alone sculptural relief. Although all of the symbols are seemingly randomly portrayed, there is a calculated informality in the juxtapositioning of the elements emphasising the incredible diversity of the Scottish nation. Included in the frieze panels are the following pictorial representations;

Natural History; Golden eagle, capercaillie, heron, fish, lobster, seal, angus coe, wheat, barley,

Military, Highland soldier, Scottish broad and basket hilt swords, musket, sash broach

History Heraldry and Religion; Scottish lion and coat of arms, Celtic harp, ceremonial orb, St Andrew, Scottish Thistle, Scottish cross,Viking ship, saint

During the recent demolition of the 1963 Clydesdale bank, these panels were discovered hidden behind later marble cladding. The frieze was originally conceived by John Alexander Halliday who gave the original painted designs to the sculptor Philip Bentham who modelled them in clay and then had them cast in aluminium. Included in the lot is a copy of an article in the 20th April 1964 Financial Times describing the building, including the frieze, together with a copy of the original designs for one of the panels as well as a present day letter from Mr J.A. Halliday, now retired and living in Scotland, confirming his part in

Music and Sport; Bagpipes, golf club, fishing rod and fly, salmon, early bicycle, hunting horn Buildings; Edinburgh Castle, highland croft, lighthouse, textile mills, brewery, power station Farming, Fishing and Industry; fishing nets, fishing boat, shepherd’s crook, crofter spinning wool, distillery, shipyards and cranes, welders plate, blacksmith’s anvil, dray horse collar and wagon wheel, cotton and wool spindles and reels,

the commission as well as his delight that the panels had been rediscovered and survived the demolition. Mr Halliday is planning to publish a book on his work next year, which will include these panels. Scans of these documents as well as pictures of the individual panels may be seen on our website.

Woodford did some decorative work for the liner RMS Queen Mary, carving wooden screens and designing bronze uplighters for the cabin class smoking room. For the coronation ceremony of ueen Elizabeth II in 1953, Woodford made a set of ten plaster sculptures of the Queen’s Beasts, each 6 feet tall to be placed at the entrance of Westminster Abbey. He went on to make a set of Portland stone replicas which an anonymous donor presented to Kew Gardens in 1956. They now stand on the Palm House Terrace. In the 1950s Woodford made a set of reliefs representing the four elements for the Lloyds building in Lime Street in the City of London. In 1951 he made the group of bronze statues of Robin Hood and his Merry Men that stand near the gates of Nottingham Castle. The group is now Grade II listed as part of the historic setting of the castle. In 1962 he modelled a new version of the royal coat of arms for use on major public buildings such as courts and embassies for the Ministry of Public Buildings. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy on 2 March 1937 and a full Academician on 27 April 1945, and appointed OBE in the 1953 Coronation Honours. He died on 8 November 1976.

General Electrical Company were to become the largest electrical manufacturing organisation in the British Empire and lived up to their description of Manufacturers of everything electrical, throughout their 100 year history. During the mass industrialisation of the 1950’s, GEC were often the supplier of choice for lighting the factories, workshops and mills of Britain with their huge range of light fixtures for every application. Rolls Royce built its Nightingale Road site to move production of the Silver Ghost car to Derby from Manchester in 1908. It later became synonymous with the Merlin engine, which powered the Lancaster Bomber, the Spitfire

and the Mustang. These lights would have been in use during that era to illuminate the factory floor for the workforce. £1000-1500 236 A similar G.E.C. Industrial Flame Proof Pendant Flood Light 1940’s £1000-1500

381 Richard Cresswell Torus Stainless steel Signed 230cm high; head 130cm diameter Cresswell has a background in design and engineering, prior to his decision to take a career break and study art at Warwick College of Art and Birmingham City University. His current work has seen a shift of emphasis, with metal being the medium of choice as he is not constrained by the size and shape of timber, and his recently developed metal tile technique allows him to work in beautiful organic three dimensional curves. Alongside his abstract work are a number of fun pieces such as the Butterfly Bench’, ‘Caterpillar Bench’ and the ‘Cocoon’, hence completing the lifecycle. Here, he catered to Dukes and Duchesses, the rich and famous, and sportsmen the world over. He was so successful, and his reputation so great, that following his own death in 1912, the company he founded stayed in business for another 60 years, despite the general decline in interest in taxidermy through the twentieth century. During this period, the firm employed hundreds of workers, and was always renowned for the high quality of the work produced and the top quality standards maintained by its employees.
