New beginnings ... Berkeley High School Head Coach Jeff Cruce has hit the ground running in Moncks Corner.

The 2011 football season can be seen as a season of change around the Lowcountry. New football coaches stepped in at Berkeley and Cane Bay as a graduating class departs and a new group of seniors start the year ready to make their mark. Jeff Cruce made the jump from Cane Bay to Berkeley after three seasons to take over for longtime Stags coach Jerry Brown who retired after 18 seasons along the home sidelines. Cane Bay then pulled defensive coordinator Russell Zehr from its own ranks to succeed Cruce. While 2011 is seen as a season of change, some things never change as the Berkeley County Jamboree at Goose Creek was washed out by rain for the third consecutive year and for the fifth time in the event’s seven-year history.

“I don’t know what it is about this jamboree but we can’t seem to catch a break with the weather,” said Gators head coach and AD Chuck Reedy. “I know the players and coaches around the county all look forward to it each year. It’s a great opportunity for all the teams in the county to get together and play some football.” Approximately four inches of rain fell on the Goose Creek area on Friday, Aug. 12 between noon and 1:30 p.m. Reedy said while the rain had stopped by game time, the field was unplayable. “We had water standing everywhere,” he said. “As much as I’d have liked to play you don’t want to tear up your field and you don’t want to chance someone getting hurt.” Reedy’s Gators, who lost the 2010 Class AAAA Division II state title game to Northwestern and finished with a 13-1 record, look to do much of the same this year. The Gators stand as one of the area’s most domiSee NEW Page 6

from page 5 nant teams if early season scrimmages are any indication. Berkeley will field a very young sophomore heavy team this fall that will take its lumps through October, but the Stags see the forest through the trees here, knowing they field a team of young athletes that will improve as they mature. If the Stags equal 2010’s 10-4 mark Moncks Corner will be a happy place. Timberland once again ranks as one of the top teams in Class AA and will once again contend for a state title. With a new playoff format adopted this year, Class AA will crown two state champions. Stratford finished with a 6-6 mark in 2010 and if that wasn’t bad enough, had to replace 20 seniors lost to graduation. The Knights bring back an experienced quarterback, though, in Jacob Park. Park finished his freshman season with over 1,400 yards passing and 12 touchdowns. Running back Devin Washington will be back too after rushing for over 600 yards and

five touchdowns. Cane Bay begins a new era under Zehr who hope to improve on a 7-5 record in 2010 and the school’s first region championship in football. Hanahan brings back a bevy of skill players from a team that went 8-4, including senior receiver/defensive back Chris Brown. Brown had over 1,000 yards receiving in 2010 and scored 16 touchdowns. He currently holds 16 college offers. Summerville’s John McKissick begins his 60th year on the sidelines and will once again head up a powerful Green Wave squad looking to grab another Region 8-AAAA championship. The Green Wave finished the 2010 season with a 10-3 record, losing 45-14 to Lexington in the second round of the AAAA playoffs.Meanwhile Fort Dorchester has a ton of returning starters and is looking claw its way back to the top of that region. Ahsley Ridge, which just joined the 4-A ranks last season, is looking to make some waves of its own this season and prove it belongs in Class AAAA.

Russell Zehr became Cane Bay High School’s second football coach after Jeff Cruce left to take Jerry Brown’s place at Berkeley.

Junior running back Romelo Doctor returns this season as the Swamp Foxes’ leading rusher.

Swamp Foxes hope to keep moving forward BY ROGER LEE The Journal Scene

Things are steadily improving for the Ashley Ridge football team, which is entering its fourth season. “We are pleased with our numbers this year,” second-year Swamp Fox coach Kenny Walker said. “We still have to play some guys both ways and have some depth issues at certain positions, but for the most part things are better than they have been in the past because we have more players.” Just two springs ago, Ashley Ridge only had 65 players come out for its varsity and JV programs. That increased to 116 this summer. The team has more than 20 seniors this year. “We have a good group of guys who have been here for four years,” Walker said. “We have some good leadership.” Multiple years in the weight room is starting to pay off for the team and since fewer players are going both ways the

coaching staff is able to expand its playbook and expect more from its athletes. “We are going to continue to run a spread offense, but we are working more tight-end packages in this year and using some zone blocking,” Walker said. “Defensively, we are doing some things different up front, adding some movement that I think will help us.” The Swamp Foxes return seven starters on each side of the ball. The offensive line will be anchored by four-year starter Chris Massey. Jack Masur, Chris Harley and Brian Nix also return up front. They will pave the way for a formidable Swamp Fox backfield. The team returns two junior running backs with a lot of experience. Romelo Doctor was the team’s leading rusher as a sophomore. He carried 186 times for 919 yards and 10 touchdowns while also making 32 receptions for 263 yards. Joining him in the backfield again will be Vernon Moree, who car-

ried 34 times last season for nearly 200 yards while making 14 receptions for more than 150 yards. Doctor had no fumbles on the season while Moree only had two. Also back is senior Seamus McKinney, who is one of the top receivers in the Lowcountry. Last season, McKinney made 71 receptions for more than 1,000 yards and nine TDs. The tough task of replacing three-year starter Cameron Cox at the quarterback position falls on former receiver and backup QB Jacob Thompson. Walker says the QB should do a good job as long as he doesn’t try to do everything his predecessor did for the team. “Jacob was there to see Cameron make a lot of plays for us,” Walker said. “When you would think he was sacked he would get free and complete a pass down field. What we don’t want is Jacob to get pressured into extending plays like that. We need to utilize our running backs and senior receivers.

Jacob may not throw the ball as well as Cameron or be as shifty, but he is a faster runner than Cameron.” On the defensive side of the ball, the Swamp Foxes returned all of their linebackers and secondary players. Linebacker Lorenzo Backer, defensive back Frankie Heyward and defensive end Kenyon Morrison return as seniors to anchor the squad. Others returning with considerable experience include linebacker Brandon Hughes and DB Otis Neals. Walker is hoping the Swamp Foxes will continue moving forward and eventually become a force in the area. “We want to be more physical this year and I think we have been so far, but we’ll just have to wait and see,” he said. “We can run with most teams but the test for us is when we face a team that lines up and goes right at you.” Contact Roger Lee @ 873-9424 ext. 213 or rlee@journalscene.com

ily mean we are going to win them all,” LaPrad said. “We are also counting on some first-year starters. We are taking the mentality that it takes all 11 guys so we will need everyone to carry their weight. But we have high expectations because the guys worked hard in the offseason to prepare mentally and physically.” The Patriot offense lost its two top running backs, top receiver and a lineman to graduation last year. But the team returns seven true starters and has good candidates to replace the four players it lost. Senior Rodney Gibbs returns to the team after missing last season. In 2009, he was the Patriots’ leading receiver with 27 catches for 409 yards and four touchdowns. Also bringing experience to the receiving corps are seniors Devron Glenn and Chris Rouse and junior T.J. Smith. Glenn made 40 receptions for 494 yards and four TDs last year while also rushing for 594 yards and seven touchdowns. During his first two seasons with the Patriots, Glenn was primarily a quarterback so he is also a threat to throw the ball up field. Daitwan Commodore, Charles Loftland and Matt Murray are the frontrunners to replace the two running backs who graduated. Commodore and Loftland served as second string running backs for the varsity last season while also contributing at other positions. Former linebacker Odell Funicelli was moved to the tight end position this season to help solidify an offensive line with ample experience. For a second straight year, that line will provide protection for quarterback Ethan

Long, who is coming off a fantastic junior year. Last season the 6-4, 226-pound QB completed 153 passes for nearly 1,800 yards and 15 TDs. He rushed for four TDs. Defensively, the Patriots return six starters. “We have some holes on that side of the ball, but we have our entire secondary back,” LaPrad said. “Some of our linemen and linebackers don’t have much varsity experience, but I like our size and athleticism at those positions. I feel our young guys on defense are the best we’ve ever had, but it will take them time to mature and improve their skills.” Anchoring the Patriot defensive line will be Myles Moultrie and Roderick Davis, who combined for 66 tackles last season. Bryce Tapscott and Rashad Smith will anchor the veteran Patriot secondary. Tapscott had 68 tackles last season while Smith had 29. Combined, they broke up 15 passes and Tapscott had an interception. Seniors Brandon Frasier and Delton Wells return to provide experience to the linebacker position. Joining them will be a promising group of young linebackers. Coaches are expecting big things out players such as David Govan and Kevyn Flores. The Fort has both its place kickers back. Last year Ryan Grainger handled most of the kickoffs and longer field goals while Justin Cooper handle many of the extrapoint attempts. Also returning are the team’s top three kick returners – Bradley Frasier, Chris Walker and TJ Smith.

Every team dreams of a state championship before the sun comes up on a new football season and the Goose Creek Gators are no different. What sets them apart is they actually have a legitimate chance. Many consider the Gators the favorite to win it all in Class AAAA Division II after coming so close the past couple of seasons. “We’re working harder than we’ve ever worked before,” senior outside linebacker Trevon Bennett said. “We want to get up there to Clemson (the site of the championship game). We’ve got a lot of confidence in the defense and the offense is stepping up.” Each of the last two seasons the Gators have been stopped short of the title game, losing in the state semifinal to the eventual champion on both occasions. Goose Creek enters 2011 as the No. 1 team in Class AAAA by the High School Sports Report and is ranked nationally. The Gators return 13 starters from the 2010 squad, which captured the Region 7-AAAA crown and eclipsed the old school record for wins in a season with 13, besting the 2009 squad’s 10 wins. They open up at Irmo on Aug. 26. “A lot of these guys have been part of our program for six years,” Gators coach Chuck Reedy said. “They’ve worked hard. They’ve been successful. They’ve been a big part of getting us where we are. This is the year. This should be their year.” On offense, Goose Creek brings back quarterback Jaquan Marsh for a third season. Senior fullback Virgil Smalls (1,066 yards, 24 TDs) and sophomore tailback Caleb Kinlaw (524 yards, 4 TDs) also come back. Junior receiver Tramel Terry (606 yds, 5 TDs) is back too and the UGA commitment also figures into the mix in the backfield. Other receivers are seniors Zach Lavery and Cody Key. Up front, senior left tackle Seth Craven and senior right guard Matt Steffensen are three-year starters. The other three starters on the interior line are senior center Davon Mitchell, junior left guard Dylan Steele and senior right tackle Bryan Flute. Senior Nick Roach and sophomore Kalan Ritchie are the tight ends. On defense, Bennett, outside linebacker T.J. Burrell and junior defensive end Gerald Turner are the anchors of an athletic and skilled front eight. Bennett had 153 total tackles in 2010, while Burrell, who is committed to Clemson, made 110 total stops. Knights return 11 starters for 2011 season BY ROB GANTT The Gazette

On offense, the Knights bring back quarterback Jacob Park (6-4, 205), only a sophomore, and senior running back D e v i n Washington (510, 188). Park finished his freshman season with over 1,400 yards passing and 12 touchdowns. “Having your quarterback back is good for c o n t i n u i t y, ” Park said. Park gives the Knights more than that. He’s got a strong arm and is more mobile than it

Stratford’s football team was one of the hotter programs over the second half of last season and will be looking to build off that as a new year dawns. “We try not to talk about numbers (of victories),” said Knights coach Ray Stackley, whose team bounced back from a 1-5 start to go 6-6 and finish second in Region 7AAAA in 2010. “We just try to get better week to week and hopefully we’ll be peaking going into the Rob Gantt/Gazette playoffs.” Stratford coach Ray Stackley enters his 27th Aside from the X’s season with the Knights this fall. 9, 180) and Jamar Stevens (5-10, 175) and wide receivers Steven Archie (5-11, 180) and Brandon Gourdine (5-10, 170). Up front, the Knights bring back a pair of senior starters in left tackle Eric Dickerson (6-4, 260) and left guard Braxton Childs (62, 270). Other linemen are senior right guard Phillip Nich (6-1, 284), senior right tackle John Bennett (6-2, 240) and senior centers Nathaniel Park (6-1, 220) and Dylan Morris (6-1, 231). Tight end Kris Hyman (6-2, 252) is a senior. On defense – to use a baseball analogy – the Knights are strong and experienced up the middle. In all, they bring back six starters. Junior noseguard Shawn Peace (6-0, 258) anchors the defensive front and senior inside linebackers Brandon Young (5-9, 222) and Terrell Walton (5-10, 206) are back after

leading the team in tackles in 2010. “ They’re both seasoned vets,” Stackley said. “They both can run pretty well and should provide good leadership.” The starting free safety, senior Justin Mood (5-11, 171), made four interceptions last season and has worked as hard as any player in the program. “He’s made tremendous physical improvements,” Stackley said. “He’s put on 12 to 15 pounds. He’s made the biggest gains of all of our players.” Senior cornerback Nethius Davis (5-8, 153) and sophomore outside linebacker Cecil Smith (6-1, 202) are also returning starters. “We’ve got to find some other starters and develop depth quickly,” Stackley said. Senior kicker Cole Rymer (5-8, 150) will be a third-year starter on special teams.

McKissick seeking new stars BY ROGER LEE

The Journal Scene

Summerville doesn’t have the breakaway speed it had last season, but coach John McKissick plans to do the best with what he’s got. The Green Wave was hit hard by graduation. Among the many players the team lost were its all-time leading rusher and its two fastest and most productive receivers from the 2010 campaign. “We don’t have the speed we had last season so we had better play good defense and take good care of the ball,” McKissick said. “We will need to drive the ball and have some success with play action passes because we probably won’t be able to go deep as often as we did last year. We have bodies to plug into positions that were left vacant, but we need to

build our confidence and cut out mistakes.” The Wave only returns one true starter on the offensive line, center Jarrid Govia. However, McKissick says he is a good one. Plus the team does have some players who have showed potential at the position, including a few upper classmen who have seen some varsity action. The team may not have a running back who can match the 2,300-plus rushing yards DeAngelo Henderson had last season, but it does have a hand full of backs who should be contributors. Leading the group so far this season is senior Nigel Frierson, who carried 71 times last year for more than 400 yards and four touchdowns. He also had 100-plus receiving yards. Senior Michael Thomas and Junior Chris McKinnon have also shown promise early

this year. “Frierson isn’t as fast as DeAngelo, but he runs down hill well,” McKissick said. “Thomas doesn’t have much size, but he has good vision and can be elusive. McKinnon and Frierson both have good hands out of the backfield.” Markese Tucker and Curtis Felder are the only receivers returning with considerable varsity experience. Last season, Tucker made 19 receptions and scored one touchdown. However, Summerville does return Dalton Saunders, a three-year starter at quarterback. In 2010, he completed 141 passes for more than 2,500 yards and 22 TDs. He also rushed for six TDs. Summerville also has some holes to fill on the other side of the ball, but should have a strong defensive backfield.

Anchoring the defense is senior defensive back Matt White, who led the state in interceptions last season with 11. He also broke up six other pass attempts and made 60 tackles. Senior Chris Wilson is back to help White in the secondary and linebackers Ryan Fowler, Matt Halter, Christian Campbell, Adam Blocker and Jared Mathis also return with considerable varsity experience. Fowler, Halter and Campbell each had 35-plus solo tackles last season. Kicker Bryan Jordan was a big part of Summerville’s 10-3 season last year, but the team has to replace him for this year’s campaign. Returning junior Parker Cleveland is the frontrunner to do most of the Wave’s place kicking and punting. However, he is being pushed by senior Justin Moree and junior Andrew Scholz

Berkeley Stags head coach Jeff Cruce knows there will be some growing pains as his young football team matures and learns a new system but he can see the talent through the inexperience. “These guys are ready to knock heads,” he said. “We have athletes on this team,” he said. “We may be very young, but we have size and we have speed. This defense could be dominating.” Cruce feels whatever his team gives him this season is gravy. It’s next year and the year after that where he sees his Stags stepping up to make a run of it. “For the next three to five years we have the opportunity to do some remarkable things with this program,” he said. Seniors Tyler Bartley and Nick Hill dominate a strong Stags secondary, with Hunter Shepherd plugging up the middle at linebacker. Cruce pointed out the play of his defensive line. “These guys are big and running 4.6 forties,” he said. “Steven Sawyer is

the shortest of the guys out there but he weighs 300 pounds and is one of the best nose guards lining up on the ball.” The Stags have a pair of bookends on each side of the line in Cyrus Pickney and Jewuan Jefferson. The Stags’ offensive line is young but big. Sophomores John Bellamy and Ja Juan Williams have stood out in workouts this summer, along with seniors Branden Martin and Haven Sowell, and juniors Dalton Infinger and Kendrick Wilson and TJ Griffin making significant contributions up front. On offense the Stags will roll out their Young Guns in sophomore quarterbacks Matt Harkness, Conner Teague and Devin Kilgor. “I won’t hesitate to throw any one back there in situations,” Cruce said. “We’ll run a fast offense. These guys will be ready to go.” Asanti Dantzler lines up in the backfield and in the slots, Shaquille Thompson, Matthew Bryant and Dylan Baker set up as prime receiving targets for an offense that intends to throw the football. Cobras begin new era Football Preview

BY ROB GANTT The Gazette

Cane Bay has new leadership and a number of holes to fill heading into the 2011 season, especially on defense, but the Cobras have been putting in the time to get ready. “Our football team has worked hard to fill

the vacancies left by our first graduating class,” first-year coach Russell Zehr said. “They made a lot of progress during spring practice on both sides of the ball. We have a lot of young talent coming back to us this year and they don’t mind hard work. I am excited about getting started.” The Cobras begin the Zehr era Aug. 26 at

At wide receiver, seniors Montez Powell and Shaquille Husser combined for 26 catches last season. “There’s not a whole lot that comes their way that doesn’t get caught,” Zehr said. Defensively, the Cobras lost eight of their top 10 tacklers from last season. The marquee players coming back are senior linebacker Randal Drew, who was second in tackles with 111, and senior safety Kennen Reid. Reid was in on over 60 stops. Linebacker Chris David, a senior, also started some games last season along with junior defensive end Tyrell Davis. Other starters up front will be Leon Givens, Henry Pryor and Aaron Perkins. Freshman Matt Rudy joins Drew and David on the second level. In the secondary, junior Jason Sheppard is the other safety. Junior Joey Wade and senior Brian Florence are the cornerbacks. “The difference with (last year’s team) and this group is that those kids had been starters for three years,” Zehr said. “They felt like they deserved to be good. I’m really curious to see how these young ones react. Now it’s their turn. It’s just a matter of how quickly they develop.” Junior George Anderson and senior Devon Hutchinson are the team’s kickers.

rival Ashley Ridge. Zehr takes over for Jeff Cruce, who left for Berkeley after leading Cane Bay for its first three seasons of football. In 2010, Cane Bay went 7-5 and lost in the second round of the playoffs to eventual state champion Myrtle Beach. Of the players returning for the Cobras most are on the offensive side of the ball, led by four-year starter at quarterback Brandon Hall. He’ll once again be asked to manage games in Cane Bay’s power attack. Hall threw for over 1,000 yards and seven touchdowns last season and also ran for two scores. He’s backed up by Shon Swett, a junior. Senior Anthony Enos and junior Davon Higgins will be the most experienced running backs returning. Enos topped 500 yards and scored five touchdowns last fall, while Higgins was over 300 yards and reached the end zone five times as well. The offensive front will be as experienced a group as the Cobras have. Linemen Josh Hale, Blake Paez, A.J. Melendrez and David Bryant are all seniors, while Charles Thompson is a junior. Tight end Jonathan Edwards is also a junior. “We’re big up front, strong and physical,” Zehr said. “We like to get after folks.”

Coach Charlie Patterson’s team, powered by senior receiver Chris Brown, is the prohibitive favorite to win Region 6-AA again. In 2010, the Hawks finished the season 8-4 after starting out 2-3. They went on to average 38.9 points per game. Brown, who has narrowed his list of college choices to Virginia Tech, Cincinnati and South Carolina, hauled in 50 passes for 1,098 yards and 16 touchdowns last season.

Brown, who set a state record in the triple jump this past spring, also has major college offers in track and field. Junior Anthony Smalls got some action last season as a backup quarterback behind Derek Coblentz. He threw 22 passes for 186 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His backup is sophomore Mason Schwerzler. “Anthony got a lot of time during games last year at quarterback and has really come into his own this summer,” Hanahan offensive coordinator Page Wofford said. “He may be the best athlete we've had at quarterback in the last four years. He works hard in the weight room and can run well. I am excited

about our offense with him at the helm. He gives us the ability to do a lot of things. Senior Patrick Alston is another notable target returning after hauling in 26 catches for 393 yards and three touchdowns. Alston also figures to get some carries out of the backfield too. Sammy Richardson and Mario Gates will also be

targets in the passing game. Running back Devontay Grant gives the Hawks some power running between the tackles, an element that’s been missing in recent years. Octavius Hayes is also a running back. Up front, the Hawks return three starters, right tackle Joe Magrane, left guard Jamal Taylor and left tackle Roger Flathmann. Center Aaron Clark and right guard Cameron Blackman are the new starters on the line. Forrest Bowman is

also expected to get some time at right guard. “If we can stay healthy we should be able to score some points this year,” Wofford said. On defense, Steadman Ferrette is the anchor in the middle of the defensive front. Ryan Hunt is a returning starter at one end position. Dane Arroyo is another starter up front along with Cole Flores. Other players in the mix up front are Jacob Garibay, Brandon Williams and

Corbin Heyward. Vontrell Grant, Quan Wade and Lyndon Young are the starters at linebacker. Marquis Mack is another player that will see significant time at linebacker. Brown and Alston are the team’s cornerbacks while the safeties are Marlon Washington and Andrew Conyers. The Hawks opened the regular season Aug. 19 at home against Hartsville and will host Timberland Aug. 26 before traveling to Bishop England Sept. 2

Timberland Head Coach Art Craig has said in the past that his 2011 football team will be good, but he reserves comment as to just how good. “On paper we have the potential to be very good,” Craig said. “Our depth has given us opportunities to explore options on offense and defense we n o r m a l l y wouldn’t be able to do, but you know how it goes. On any given Friday anybody can beat anybody and we have to stay focused on our goals. We can’t afford to get caught up in the hype.” During the preseason Wolves’ defense very quietly went about its business of shutting down opposing offenses. THS spoke quietly and carried a mighty big stick. Craig cited the play of senior defensive back Lee Mayes, a quiet enforcer who has stepped up to assume more of a leadership role with the team. “Lee’s leadership role has been something I’ve been waiting on,” Craig said. “It’s nice to see him step into that role with the defense and the team as a senior.” Craig also noted the maturation process of quarterback Taylor Elizondo.

“With Taylor he has to let the game come to him and not try to force plays we can’t make. He’s doing that now and nobody does a better job of game management than Taylor.” Keying much of t h e Wo l v e s offensive attack is running b a c k Daquan Lucas, who is emerging as the

THS Head Coach Lowcountry’s breakout player this fall. Lucas has generated intense interest from college recruiters from his performance on the field before ever taking a handoff yet. “Daquan got offers from more than one college just by what he did in the spring,” Craig said. Defense is Timberland’s calling card, and while the headline names may be missing for the moment, the talent is not. “We don’t have the big names like Quintin Washington, or Rockarius King, or Aldrick Fordham but across the board we may be a deeper and better all around team,” said Craig. “We have 17 starters returning and our defense is strong with James Middleton on See TIMBERLAND Page 35

The Wolves have not lost a regular season game since a 2007 loss to Berkeley and have not lost a region game in six years, boasting a 37-3 record over the past three seasons to include 30-straight regular-season wins over that same period. Timberland’s three losses have all come at the hands of their arch nemesis the Dillon

Wildcats. “We may have won more football games than anyone in the Lowcountry, but when you look at all that the unfortunate thing is our program is judged every year on whether or not we beat Dillon,” Craig said. With a new split format in the Class AA playoffs this year there will be two title games, with both taking place at Benedict College in Columbia on Friday, Dec. 2. For Craig, the new alignment doesn’t change a thing in regard to his team’s focus during the season. “We’re not going to look past anybody. We know anybody on our schedule is beatable but we also know we can be beat by anybody.” Craig said the playoffs would be more

competitive under the new format as there

Burnette to lead Wolverines BY ROGER LEE

The Journal Scene

Woodland has a new coach and several new starters this season. Mathis Burnette enters his first season as the head coach for the Wolverines, but he is familiar with Woodland football and so are his assistants. Burnette served as the offensive line coach for Woodland two years ago under then head coach Reed Charpia. He has also served as the offensive coordinator for Ridgeland and Lakewood high schools and was a four-year letterman for Newberry College. So far, things have gone well for Burnette during his first season in charge. “I like this team,” he said. “These players haven’t given me any problems and their attitudes are always great. I don’t have a goal this year as far as a record, but my ultimate goal is for us to beat a team we aren’t supposed to. That is something I don’t think we have ever done here. We’ve won a lot of games as the frontrunner going in, but I want to see us come from behind or man up against a team that is favored.”

Woodland only has two starters returning on the offensive side of the ball, but Burnette isn’t discouraged. “We don’t have anyone on the offensive line who has taken a snap in a varsity game,” he said. “But considering that, what they have done has been pretty impressive. We didn’t give up a single sack in our preseason scrimmages. We start a freshman at left tackle, but he has really played well.” This season the daunting task of following Robert Smith, the four-year Wolverine quarterback who set the bar pretty high, falls upon sophomore Patrick Sheppard. He was a varsity letterman last season, but spent most of his time at other positions and as a backup QB. “People are naturally going to want to compare him to Robert and that is not fair to him,” Burnette said. “He is a different QB and we aren’t going to ask him to be Robert. He is one of our key players, but it isn’t going to be a one-man show. Helping him out are guys like our slot receiver Andre Green. He is a returning senior who is fast and a big playmaker. We also have some guys who can run the ball.” This season Burnette doesn’t plan to air it

out as much as the Wolverines have in the past. Instead the rushing game and short passing routes will be the staples for the offense. Woodland returns seven starters on defense. Burnette says on that side of the ball everything starts with Shane Britt, who is drawing interest from colleges. “He is our starting middle linebacker and just a terrific player,” the coach said. “He has a lot of speed and hits everything that moves. He doesn’t say a lot, but when he does tell the other guys something they listen.”

The linebacker corps will likely be where the strength lies for the defense. Joining Britt in the backfield is Rameak Smith, a 6-foot, 3inch transfer from Goose Creek. Michael Wamer returns to float between the strong safety and outside linebacker positions and Brandon Jamison also returns to the defensive backfield. Key players on the defensive line include returners Ryan Rhodus and Dejaun Smith. “I think this team has big-play potential on both sides of the ball,” Burnette said.

While Woodland will still have a passing game, the Wolverines look to keep the ball on the ground more than in the past.

For the Cross Trojans, the key to success is sustenance. Will there be enough gas in the tank by Week 8 to sustain the Trojans through the home stretch of the 2011 season and into the playoffs? “The key is if we’re in shape enough playing both ways for two months where other larger schools get to rest many of their players,” said Trojans head coach Shaun Wright. Cross lost three of its last four games down the stretch last year and bowed out early in the playoffs. Wright expects more from his team this season. Wright said his team has enjoyed some success during their pre-season scrimmages. “We have pretty good speed on defense. On offense we have been good with ball protection so that will always give us a chance.” Wright added that special teams preparation will be critical and his team has worked extra hard to prepare. On offense Jalen Frazier returns under center, one of the most multi-faceted athletes to step onto a football field since Bruce Ellington. “Jalen has been solid in running our offense,” Wright said. “He, along with the offensive line and backs has been fun to watch.”

On defense, linebacker Olin Pinckney has stepped up to lead the charge. “He’s been a pleasant surprise taking a leadership position,” said Wright, who added that while his defense is not yet in midseason form, “we are working hard to get there. Our secondary is back and we hope these guys continue to use good technique and help us back there.” In the trenches Wright is counting on linemen Trey Levine and Malik Gooding to force the game outside and play to the Trojans’ speed in coverage. “Our game is about speed and being in shape,” Wright said. “Finding depth has been hard. We are working these guys hard, because like I tell them they may have no help come fall.” Such is life for a smaller school like Cross where many of his skill position players go both ways on offense and defense. Wright has seen the typical consistency from Frazier under center and expects significant contributions across the board from Treston Haskell, Branford Halls, Malik Gooding, Taurus Nelson, and Greg Jones. “Jalen, Treston Haskell and Bijaan Cole are the main seniors who are leading by example,” Wright said. “We also plan on freeing up Frazier by playing him some at the wide receiver position and have Branford Halls run our offense. Branford

does just as good as Jalen, except without the arm.” While much of the Lowcountry took part in the 41st Annual Sertoma Classic, the Trojans kicked off their regular season a week early. It’s something Cross has come to prefer. “We are excited about getting the season started,” Wright said. “Playing during Week Zero has shifted our focus, we were forced to show up and get prepared a lot sooner than usual.” Cross finished the 2010 season with a 65 record and a third place Region 6-A finish. “Summer weight lifting is where we prepare for the end of the season,” Wright said. “By hitting the weights in June and July we prepare for what may happen come October.” Scrimmage time has been short this month with the heat and rain of late. Wright had been counting on those pair of 15-minute quarters during the Berkeley County Jamboree to help get his team ready, but the third straight rain out washed those plans down the drain. Still, despite the dress rehearsal, Wright feels his team is ready. “Not playing in the jamboree took away from us having another chance to dress rehearse but nevertheless we got into our preparation starting on Sunday afternoon.”

Panthers have high hopes in 2011 BY GAIL OSBORNE For The Journal Scene

First year Panther head coach Jody Kafina is looking for a successful, winning first season. The former Summerville and Fort Dorchester assistant takes the helm this season in his first head coaching position. “I am excited and ready for the upcoming season,” Kafina said. “I am creating a high expectation to win and I am bringing a positive outlook to the program and instilling confidence in these young men.” One of the things Kafina did when he first arrived at Pinewood was to change the look of the locker room, order new helmets and new uniforms. “I want to change the mindset of these players and I believe that even these small changes will give the team an optimistic and encouraging approach,” he said.

“I also want them to know that it is not alright to lose.” The Panthers went 3-8 in 2010 and advanced to the first round of the playoffs, where they subsequently lost. This year, they return 18 players on their 33-man roster and junior quarterback Bobby Casey returns to the offensive helm. “Bobby has an excellent work ethic and outstanding commitment to the team,” Kafina said. “He is a year wiser and stronger and has all the necessary tools to be a good QB. He is a good leader and has a strong arm and we have been working on this offense so that it is molded towards his abilities.” Key players on the offensive line include seniors Justin Mitchell, Trevor Faith and Ben Goodsell. All three bring experience and leadership qualities to the field. Also contributing will be junior Zach Kanlic, who has

expected to lead the team. Junior safety Jarret Londergan and senior cornerback Tyler Malprus are also looking to be major contributors while Andrew Niemeyer and Brian Doucet bring a combination of good size, strength and work ethic to the Panther D. “Jarret is a tough, fast and physical player and Tyler, if he can step up his game this season, could help this team tremendously,” said Kafina. Kicking duties for the Panthers will be shared by senior returner Thomas Ferro and sophomore Kevin Weber. Jack Buddin also returns as the Panther punter. Kafina, his coaching staff and the team are ready for the first game of the season. The Panthers will open the season on Aug. 26 with a game at Gahagan Park. Northwood Academy will again be the Panthers’ first opponent. “As always this will set the tone for the season but when the whistle blows for the first game we will be ready,” Kafina said.

The Panthers have two wide receivers they will be looking to this season. Senior Jerome Deas returns after taking a break from football and was warmly welcomed back to the team. “We are happy to have Jerome playing for us and he is learning to be a physical player and great athlete,” said Kafina. Junior Johnny O’Shaugnessy also brings speed to the Panther receiving corps. The Panther coaching staff also has high expectations for senior Michael Pendley, who will line up at tight end. “Michael has had a good summer and has been working out hard. He has tremendous experience and we are looking for him to really step up this year,” Kafina said. Leading the Panther defense will be senior Austin Morgan, who will play inside linebacker. Northwood Academy Chargers

Chargers needing better line play as season dawns BY ROB GANTT The Gazette

season. But the Chargers have some more work to do in the trenches, v e t e r a n coach Jerry Stoots said. “ W e thought we had the potential to be greatly improved but so far it hasn’t turned out that way. It’s a very inexperienced group up front. We have a new tight end, two new offensive tackles and a new center. We’ve had some trouble coming together.” Stoots said if his team shores up the problems in the trenches, the Chargers can be a tough, competitive football team despite a small roster. He said the inexperience up front slows his team down. “All this zone blocking stuff is a foreign language to them,” Stoots said. “When you’re not sure of what you’re doing your feet don’t move very well.” The Chargers, 5-6 a year ago, begin the regular season Aug. 26 at home against Pinewood Prep with only 24 players. In years past, the fewest number of Charger players was 31. At quarterback, there is a two-man battle for the starting spot between sophomore Camden Amidon and senior Jordan Marsh. A third player, sophomore Isaiah Williams, could also get some snaps out of the wildcat. He normally plays flanker. In the backfield, senior Brendan Gilbert and sophomore Darrett Drayton are experienced runners. Last season, they combined for over 700 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns. Sophomore Chris Williams is another running back for the Chargers. Gilbert also caught 11 passes for 149 yards and three scores in 2010. The leading receiver coming back is senior Tyler Gross. Last fall, he made 28 catches for 495 yards and five touchdowns. “He’s shown some flashes of being pretty good,” Stoots said. Defensively, Gilbert is the leading tackler

returning from his linebacker spot. He made 66 total stops and four sacks a year

ago. Junior linebacker Josh Chamber was third on the team with 45 stops and three sacks. Fellow junior linebacker Ben Watkins, defensive back Drayton, senior outside linebacker Ryan Trout and sophomore linebacker Joseph Cook were also among the top eight tacklers on the team in 2010. Trout made five sacks to lead in that category and Drayton picked off three passes. “If we can come around and improve and get to where we think we can get, I believe we could be competitive and have a decent season,” Stoots said. “The Thomas Sumters and Hilton Head Christians are still probably out of our league but we think we can compete with the rest of them.”

Cathedral Academy Generals

Generals switch to 8-man football BY ROGER LEE

The Journal Scene

This season brings a lot of changes for the Cathedral Academy Generals football team, but many of them are good changes. The school recently added lights to its football field so this year the Generals will be able to actually host their home games. The team is moving out of the SCISA A division it has always participated in and instead playing in the SCISA 8-man Football division. “We are excited about the switch,” Cathedral coach Chris Huge said. “The last few years we’ve played some bigger schools that we really shouldn’t play. Some of the teams we played had 20 seniors and we didn’t even have that many players on our roster. Now that we will play teams more our size I think we will have a chance in every game.” He believes the switch will result in this year’s team being a close-knit group. “With 8-man football you use different schemes and there are other differences so both our coaches and players are entering something for the first time together,” he said. “Even most of our returning players

will be in new positions. We are having to all pull together to make the transition so it creates bonding opportunities and is cool for all of us.” The Generals only have five players returning and three of them are in new positions. Cathedral has 14 players total coming from students in grades 9-12. Dylan Jones was a lineman last season, but has transitioned into a power back for the Generals’ offense this season. Joining him in the backfield will be tailback Troy Gross, who made the all-region team last year as a defensive end. The frontrunner to start at quarterback is freshman Christian Rogers. Huge said the coaches knew he would be an impact player as a linebacker because they saw him play that position in middle school, but his performance on offense has been a pleasant surprise. “He took his first snap this month, but he is doing well,” Huge said. “He made a great read that resulted in a touchdown in one of our scrimmages. Our backfield should be strength. Dylan is just a horse and a hard hitter and Troy really has a talent for hitting the hole.” Flipping the script, the Generals’ line-

backing corps should also be strong. Junior Trace Varella returns to the position and coaches are looking for him to lead not just that group but also the entire defense. “Trace has been with us since middle school and he had a ton of tackles last year,” Huge said. “If everyone plays with his heart, we will be undefeated.” Jones and Rogers are among the promising players who will join Varella in the defensive backfield.

Cavs ‘returning everybody’ in 2011 The Independent

If the 2010 season was one of the most challenging in coach Bill McCall’s tenure at St. John’s Christian Academy then the 2011 campaign could end up being the most gratifying. “We’re returning everybody,” McCall said. “We are going to surprise a lot of peo-

ple this fall.” In 2010, left with a young and experienced team following a senior-laden team in 2009, the Cavaliers struggled finishing just 2-8 on the season. McCall expects much better results this season. “Last year we had to start over from square one and teach a lot of these kids how to play football. They took their lumps

ball.” Parker, who is a SCISA Shrine Bowl candidate said this year’s Cavaliers team will be much improved. “We’re going to shock a lot of people this year,” he said. “A lot of teams we play will remember how we struggled last year.” The receiver corps begins with a fourway competition at tight end between Tyler Dupree, Braxton Grant, Daniel Glover and Mark Bond. “All four have improved from last season,” McCall said and added his wide receivers all have experience and are having a great summer. St. John’s returns all of its wide receivers from last year to include Damien Hurta, Joe Denton, John Fondren, and Wesley Miers. Lining up behind Hammond in the backfield are running backs Houston Cumbee, Daniel Otero, Cody Wright, and C.E. Murray transfer Rashae Bey. “Houston is our returning fullback and we are expecting great things from him,” McCall said. “Daniel Otero is returning from a broken hip last season and is improving more and more every practice. Rashae has demonstrated great speed so far in practice.” The Cavaliers have nowhere to go but up following last year’s disappointing 2-8 record, but such is often the scenario for smaller schools who lose most of their team each spring via graduation. McCall looks to August and October with a strong sense of optimism after what he’s seen out of his team in the summer’s early going. “This group is working hard and should be able to be competitive this coming season.

last year as they learned on the job. This year we have a year of experience under our belts. We’re a year stronger. We’re going to be better than we were last year. We will surprise some people.” When McCall says he’s returning everybody from last year, he’s not kidding. Most all of the Cavaliers’ young and untested offense from a year ago is back a year older, a year stronger and a year more experienced, all of which are good things. “Offensively we are looking to improve on our productivity of being able to move the ball,” McCall said. “Evan Hammond is our returning quarterback. He has improved tremendously on his throwing mechanics and is also very good at moving the football.” Hammond, who begins his second year under center is chomping at the bit to get the season underway. “I am so confident in our guys. There is a sense of anxiousness to get out on the field and show that we are not the same team as last year, an anxiousness to get that bitter taste from last year out of our mouths.” Hammond added that his team made a tremendous amount of progress over the summer. “All of the guys worked hard. I think we will be farther ahead than we have been in the past couple of years.” Lining up in front of Hammond is an intact offensive line in Eric Parker, Brice Roberts, Aaron Parker, Chris Rudd and William Brown. “Offensive tackle Eric Parker who will be starting his fourth season is a possible shrine bowl candidate,” McCall said. “All the linemen have improved and we should be able to rely on them to help us move the
